The Board of Park Commissioners holds regular meetings the fourth Tuesday of every month, which are open to the public. Meetings begin at 4 p.m. in City Hall, located at 401 N. Morton St. Citizens of Bloomington are invited to visit the Board of Park Commissioners meetings with questions or concerns regarding city parks and recreation programs, events, and facilities.

Photo policy

Parks and Recreation staff may videotape or take photos of participants in programs and at special events or of people in parks or on park properties. These photos may be used in future program guides, brochures, fliers or other materials used to promote Parks and Recreation.

This guide is printed with soy-based ink on 30 percent post-consumer recycled paper.

No refunds are provided after the first day of a program. All refunds are subject to a $2 administrative fee. If the $2 charge does not cover costs incurred by the Department, the refund may be pro-rated in addition to the $2 charge. There are no refunds on season passes or punch passes. Full refunds are given for all classes cancelled by Parks and Recreation. Allow four weeks for refund requests to be processed.

Scholarships

Because some residents are unable to participate in our programs due to economic hardship, the Bloomington Parks Foundation provides youth scholarships to offset certain fees and charges. Scholarship applications can be obtained at the Parks and Recreation office, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., at any Department facility, or online at bloomington.in.gov/parks. Scholarship applications must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the start of the program for which applying. Proof of income and Monroe County residency is required. Space is Limited—Register Early!

Most programs have limited space available as well as registration deadlines. After the registration deadline please call for space availability. Register online at bloomington.in.gov/parks, or by sending in the enrollment form in this guide, or in person from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation office, 401 N. Morton St., Ste. 250.

Substitution Policy

Parks and Recreation reserves the right to use substitute instructors and alternate facilities when necessary.

How to request reasonable accommodation:

1. When you register, mark “yes” in the inclusive service request section. At least two weeks notification prior to the registration deadline for each program is required. In some cases reasonable accommodation may take longer.

2. Request and complete an inclusion questionnaire.

3. Inclusive Recreation Coordinator will contact participant to establish an individualized inclusion plan.

Parks and Recreation volunteers provide valuable services to the community by assisting with events and programs in a variety of ways. There are many opportunities for individuals and groups to choose from.

A Special Event Permit is required to hold a large-scale event in Bloomington’s beautiful city parks. A Special Event Permit is also required to hold a race, walk, run, or other event on the B-Line Trail, Clear Creek Trail, Jackson Creek Trail, or any other trail owned and managed by the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department.

Mobile Stage Rental: Groups may apply to rent Bloomington Parks and Recreation’s mobile stage for big performances within the City of Bloomington city limits. A refundable deposit is required. For more information, call Crystal Ritter, Community Events Coordinator, at 349-3962.

Fitness Permits: Instructors of fitness classes or personal trainers who charge clients a fee for their activities must obtain a permit to hold fitness classes in city parks. For more information, contact Health and Wellness Coordinator Jess Klein at 349-3771.

Approval for Alcohol Sales: Groups may request to serve beer and/or wine at an event, once the group has successfully applied for a Special Event Permit. Beer and/or wine ONLY may be served in city-owned parks, trails, and facilities, and ONLY with approval.

Noise Permits: Depending on the nature of the special event, a Noise Permit from the City of Bloomington Public Works Department may also be required. For more information about Noise Permits, contact the Department of Public Works at 349-3410.

The Banneker Community Center is proud to host the Evans-Porter Memorial Library. The library offers fiction and nonfiction books for adults, teens, and children.

Recent encyclopedias and other reference materials are available to help with homework. A focus on AfricanAmerican history and culture reflects the library’s location in a historically significant building and neighborhood.

Family Resource Center

Located on the third floor, this is a place where families can gather information, network with others, build a support system, and enjoy their children in a fun, safe space.

Reserve Space at Banneker for Family Fun

Room reservations (Family Resource Center, NEW! library, gym, and kitchen) may be made for individuals, families, and groups for up to two hours per day between 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

• Reservations are available for one month at a time.

• Each room has a maximum capacity.

• Preschool Story Time is offered virtually on Banneker’s Facebook page at City of Bloomington, IN - Banneker Community Center.

• Upon arrival, those with reservations will enter the gym area and are greeted at the mobile check-in desk. Safety protocols are in place, and staff will sanitize rooms and equipment between users.

The Buskirk-Chumley Theater is a 600-seat, historic theater in downtown Bloomington. Beautifully restored by the Bloomington Area Arts Council, the theater is currently managed by a private non-profit organization, BCT Management, Inc. The theater is a valued community resource, available for public or private events.

Cascades Special $30 18 holes and cart

Cascades Golf Course consists of three nine-hole courses, which can be combined to create three separate 18-hole configurations. The Quarry Course is the oldest of the three courses, dating back to 1928. The Quarry Course is a par-35, playing a maximum of 2,995 yards. The Pine Course was constructed in 1931 and is a par-36, playing a maximum of 3,135 yards. The Ridge Course is the newest course, opened in 2000.

The Ridge Course is a par-36 which plays a maximum of 3,086 yards.

Individual or group golf lessons may be scheduled with our on-site golf pro by calling 349-3764. Leagues are offered for all ages. Beer and soft drinks are available for purchase from concessions. Indiana Alcohol & Tobacco Commission regulations prohibit individuals from bringing their own alcoholic beverages onto the golf course.

Opened in 2019, the Clubhouse at Cascades Golf Course boasts a towering ceiling and a room surrounding by floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the driving range, putting green, and rolling hills of Cascades! Overhead doors can be opened onto the attached patio (47' × 19') in nice weather, expanding the available space for your next gathering. A warming kitchen and restroom are both located inside the clubhouse.

Switchyard Park

OPEN 5 a.m.–11 p.m. daily Spray Pad at Community Foundation Switchyard Plaza open 10 a.m.–8 p.m. daily (weather permitting) with free admission.

The 57.2-acre Switchyard Park, formerly known as the McDoel Switchyard, served as a hub for railroad operations for a series of companies including the New Albany and Salem Railroad, the Monon Railroad, and eventually CSX Railroad. CSX Railroad made the decision to phase out its services in 2000, and the last train left McDoel Switchyard in 2004.

Construction of the new Switchyard Park began in 2017, with a year-long project to install critical infrastructure: a 40" sanitary sewer line. Weddle Brothers Building Group LLC was awarded a construction contract for Switchyard Park in April 2018, for a total cost of $25,857,200.

Members of the public gathered with elected officials on May 11, 2018 for a ceremonial groundbreaking at Switchyard Park, near Grimes Lane. The Switchyard was officially revealed to the public in November 2019.

Lunar Skating

Skate in a specially lit, lunar-like arena while listening to the best hits of the ’80s, ’90s and today courtesy of the Arena’s super-watt sound system. Groups of all sizes and skaters of all ability levels are welcome! Lunar skating involves the use of strobe and other special-effect lighting.

Lunar Skating does not take place 12/19, 12/26, or 1/2.

Bloomington Blades Travel Hockey

Bloomington Blades Travel Hockey is designed for the more serious hockey player between the ages of 7–12 yrs. (before June 30). Teams play a schedule consisting of 25 home and away games.

The program is open to all Blades and House Hockey players. For more information, visit the youth hockey website at bloomingtonblades.org.

Non-checking and fun, this is an open league for players of all skill levels who are at least 18 years old.

Full equipment is required for competition. Games take place Oct. 11–Feb 28. This program accepts the first eight properly registered teams. Head coaches play for free; limit one head coach per team. Coaches are responsible for forming teams. The arena will facilitate a player pickup list and goalie pickup list for those teams that need extra players. Minimum 15 players per team.

Team registration and final roster pick up takes place Sept. 23 from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. at the Frank Southern Ice Arena. The first eight teams to turn in final rosters with player fees are guaranteed a spot in the league.

Ice skating lessons may be modified or cancelled based on local health department guidelines.

Session I

The Skating School curriculum is a combination of the best attributes of the Ice Skating Institute’s Learn-to-Skate Program and the U.S. Figure Skating’s Basic Skills Program. The program helps skaters progress from level to level at a steady pace. Skaters will feel a sense of accomplishment as they master the skills necessary to become confident skaters in any ice sport.

All classes are 30 minutes in length and each session is eight weeks. In addition to class time, each skater is allotted 30 minutes of ice time for independent practice. Details on practice time will be given during the first week of lessons. Registration fee includes skate rental. Classes begin promptly at the listed times. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to put skates on. Non-registered individuals are not permitted on the ice at any time. It is highly recommended all Tot and beginning skaters wear a safety (bike or skating) helmet.

Griffy Lake Nature Preserve

Boathouse, 3595 N. Headley Rd. Scenic woodlands teeming with wild flora and fauna surround the 109-acre Griffy Lake at this 1,220-acre nature preserve.

Swimming is prohibited. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has stocked the lake with bluegill, redear sunfish, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and crappie. Kayak, canoe, and stand up paddleboard rentals are available seasonally at Griffy Lake boathouse.

To protect wildlife and visitors, all dogs must remain leashed while in the preserve. Nearby Ferguson Dog Park and the Switchyard Park dog park accommodate dogs off-leash.

The surface of the lake often freezes in winter with varying ice conditions that can be hazardous. The City of Bloomington assumes no responsibility for accidents resulting from individuals venturing onto the ice.

Nestled in picturesque downtown charm, the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market has stepped up to the challenges of the current health crisis and developed an online store along with serving customers on-site.

Market-goers can expect to find a wide assortment of goods from the farm and field, including, but not limited to, fruits and vegetables, eggs, meats and cheeses, honey, seasonal flowers, as well as annual and perennial plants. Fall has arrived and pumpkins are flying through the skies over the Monroe County Fairgrounds! Launcher teams send pumpkins soaring through the air in competitions for accuracy and distance. Get a team together to build and enter a pumpkin launching device!

Not a builder? Not to worry! Watch pumpkins fly through the air during the competitions, and see them splatter to the ground when we drop them from a bucket truck. There is plenty more to do and see at the Pumpkin Launch including live music by Will Holler.

Mandatory Coaches Meeting and Coach Draft at the Twin Lakes Recreation Center on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Coaches are strongly encouraged to attend evaluations in preparation for the draft!

All selected coaches must complete an online coaching certification course from the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA). The certification fee for each coach is $20. The online training is available at nays.org.

The Bloomington Youth Basketball league focuses on basketball fundamentals and the application of learned skills. Leagues are coed through grade 3; girls play in a girls-only league beginning in grade 4. Season includes weekly practices and games one night a week. Teams practice two nights a week for the first two weeks of the season, then one night a week for the remainder of the season. There will be a total of seven games, with no postseason tournament. Practice times and days are determined by the volunteer coach. Times can vary between 5:30–9:30 p.m. based on the coach’s schedule.

A Hike Through Time

We will travel off the public trails and into the bush to discover what was lost when the dam at Leonard Springs was first built.

Come in costume for an unguided stand-up paddleboard (SUP) excursion around Griffy Lake. Participants will receive paddle boarding instructions on land prior to launch. A 30-minute wellness consultation is included as a part of each personal training package. If you are a non-member who is interested in a personal training package, you may purchase a 30-minute wellness consultation for $20. If you decide to purchase personal training sessions, the $20 fee may be applied to cost of the personal training package.

All personal training sessions must be used within six months of purchase. All training sessions are nontransferable and nonrefundable.

Meet Trainer Katie Clementi I have been working as a personal trainer for the past three years. I am a Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Nutrition Specialist through International Sports Science Association (ISSA). I have personal background in bodybuilding and athletic training (basketball, track, volleyball, soccer). Each match is 6 vs. 6 and consists of three games. Matches are self-officiated. Each team must have at least two women on the court during play. Rosters may include an unlimited number of players, but all names must be submitted prior to the start of the league. Team fees and tentative rosters are due prior to the registration deadline. Include the team captain’s name and contact information upon registration. Specific game times are announced after registration. Each team is guaranteed a minimum of eight matches, which may include a voluntary post-season tournament. Environmental Stewardship Opportunities First Saturday Weed Wrangles September 5, October 3, November 7

Learn about invasive plant species affecting our local ecosystem, how to properly remove and dispose of them, and put that knowledge into action.

Duties: Help control invasive plant species in our natural areas during this monthly work day. Work with experts in the field to create a healthier native plant habitat.

Volunteer shift(s): 1–4 p.m.

Age of volunteers: 12 yrs. and up (Volunteers under 14 yrs. must be accompanied by an adult.)

Number of volunteers: Varies, based on location.

Other: Wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle. Gloves and tools will be provided.

Putting the Gardens to Bed

Saturday, October 30 | Butler Park Community Gardens Sunday, October 31 and November 7 | Willie Streeter Community Gardens

Gardeners and others who enjoy being outdoors are invited to clear the plots and put the gardens to bed for the winter months.

Duties: Help clear plant material and hardware items (including tomato cages and stakes) from the gardens and organize them for winter storage. Plots are covered for the colder months.

Volunteer shift(s): 1–4 p.m., all days Age of volunteers: 12 yrs. and up.

Number of volunteers: 15 per day

Program Volunteer Opportunities Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Friday, October 9 | Banneker Community Center

Dress in costume, hear Halloween stories, make creepy crafts, play ghoulish games, jam to monster music, and get a Halloween treat!

Duties: Assist with event setup, teardown, and activities.

Volunteer shift(s): 5–8 p.m.

Age of volunteers: 16 yrs. and up.

Number of volunteers: 8 Other: Volunteers are welcome to dress in costume for the event.

Dearly Departed Cemetery Tours

Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17 Rose Hill Cemetery

Explore the stories that have outlived the deceased at one of Bloomington’s most historic cemeteries.

Duties: Assist with setup and teardown, guiding parking, and greeting tour participants. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to go on a tour during their shift.

Volunteer shift(s): 6–10 p.m.

Age of volunteers: 16 yrs. and up.

Number of volunteers: 3 per day

Bloomington Pumpkin Launch

Saturday, October 24 Monroe County Fairgrounds, 5700 W. Airport Rd.

Launcher teams send pumpkins soaring through the air in competitions for both accuracy and distance. There are also food vendors, live music, and the festive feel of fall!

Duties: Assist with setup, activities, field crew, and teardown.

Volunteer shift(s): Shift #1, 9 a.m.–12:15 p.m./ Shift #2, noon–3 p.m.

Age of volunteers: 16 yrs. and up.

Number of volunteers: 3 per shift

Festival of Ghost Stories

Friday, October 30 | Bryan Park

Curl up with a cup of cider and enjoy the crisp fall air while skilled storytellers tell haunting tales of ghosts and horror that will tingle the spine.

Duties: Assist with decorating for event, setting up concessions, passing out cider during show, keeping candles lit.

Volunteer shift(s): 6:30–9:30 p.m.

The program participant and/or his/her parent or legal guardian shall be responsible for the cost of such treatment. It is understood that the release applies to any present or future injuries and that it binds the undersigned, undersigned’s spouse, heirs, executors and administrators. The Program Participant may be photographed and videotaped while participating in Parks and Recreation activities and while attending Parks and Recreation events, and consent is given for the reproduction of such photos or videos for advertising and publicity.

Assumption of the Risk and Waiver of Liability Relating to Coronavirus/COVID-19 The novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has been declared a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization. COVID-19 is highly contagious and is believed to spread mainly from person-to-person contact. Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department has put in place preventative measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19; however, the Department cannot guarantee that the program participant, or the program participant’s household members will not become infected with COVID-19. Further, attending the program could increase the risk of the program participant, or the program participant’s household members of contracting COVID-19.

By signing this agreement, the undersigned acknowledges the contagious nature of COVID-19 and voluntarily assumes the risk that the program participant, or other members of the program participant’s household may be exposed to or infected by COVID-19 as a result of attending the program and that such exposure or infection may result in personal injury, illness, permanent disability, and death. The undersigned also acknowledges and understands that all of the risks of COVID-19 are not known and that the risk of becoming exposed to or infected by COVID-19 at the program may result from the actions, omissions, or negligence of the program participant and others, including, but not limited to, Bloomington Parks and Recreation employees, volunteers, and other program participants and their families. The undersigned voluntarily agrees to assume all of the foregoing risks, known and unknown, and accept sole responsibility for any injury or loss to the program participant, and other members of the program participant’s household.

The undersigned hereby waives, releases, discharges, and agrees to hold harmless, indemnify, and not sue Bloomington Parks and Recreations Department, its employees, agents, officers, directors, affiliates, members, volunteers, and representatives (collectively, “Releasees”), of and from any and all claims, liabilities, actions, damages, costs or expenses of any kind arising out of or relating thereto. The undersigned further agrees that this release includes any Claims based on the actions, omissions, or negligence of the Releasees, whether such claim arises before, during, or after participation in any Parks and Recreation program.
