City of Bloomington, IN - Parks and Recreation
In honor and memory of Joan Olcott February 28, 1929–March 27, 2020
The Bloomington community, including the Bloomington Parks Foundation and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, lost a community treasure, Joan Olcott, on March 27, 2020. Joan, and her late husband Lloyd, were instrumental in the development and support of numerous parks and recreation initiatives over their lifetimes. Both Joan and Lloyd served on the Parks Foundation Board at different times in their lives. The epitome of their generosity and public mindedness was evidenced by their 50th wedding anniversary gift of funding a playground at their namesake, Olcott Park, in 2001. Joan was particularly interested in assuring that children of limited means had access to parks and recreation services. She made a substantial gift to the Parks Foundation, after her husband’s passing in 2001, to ensure that there would be adequate funds to accommodate scholarships to parks services for children in need. My personal favorite memory of Joan was how she always greeted me when we saw each other. With a sweet smile, and kisses to my cheeks, she would always ask me, “How’s my favorite parks and recreation director?” I will forever miss her and Lloyd and will always smile when I think of that greeting and their tremendous positive impact on our community. —Mick Renneisen, Deputy Mayor Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department Administrator, 1996–2015 I had the distinct pleasure of working with Joan on many community boards and projects. She was the quintessential colleague with her measured, thoughtful advice and counsel as well as being one of the most gracious people I have ever known. She cared so deeply for children and their well-being, always ready to support any efforts to provide the services they need. Her commitment to the annual Don Brineman Golf Scramble has left a lasting legacy for 28 years, raising tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships for local children to join in Parks Department programs. Joan is dearly missed. —Debbie Lemon, Bloomington Parks Foundation

Facilities—Switchyard Park 6
OPEN 5 a.m.–11 p.m. daily Spray Pad at Community Foundation Switchyard Plaza Open Memorial Day through mid-September. Switchyard Park is a 65-acre park located on the city’s south side. The park is a culmination of decades of planning, as both city leaders and residents saw the potential of an abandoned railroad switchyard to become a destination park for people of all ages and abilities. Completed in November 2019, Switchyard Park at the onset required substantial remediation of coal ash and cinders, the result of the property’s historic use as a railroad switchyard. Bloomington citizens had unprecedented input into the creation of the park, and into the selection of park amenities. The park straddles the city’s B-Line Trail, a 3.1-mile former railroad corridor that provides an avenue for transportation to and from the park and surrounding neighborhoods, and for economic development in the form of restaurants, housing, art galleries, and other businesses.

Session II
The Skating School curriculum is a combination of the best attributes of the Ice Skating Institute’s Learn-to-Skate Program and the U.S. Figure Skating’s Basic Skills Program. The program helps skaters progress from level to level at a steady pace. Skaters will feel a sense of accomplishment as they master the skills necessary to become confident skaters in any ice sport. All classes are 30 minutes in length and each session is eight weeks. In addition to class time, each skater is allotted 30 minutes of ice time for independent practice. Details on practice time will be given during the first week of lessons. Registration fee includes skate rental. Classes begin promptly at the listed times. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to put on skates. Non-registered individuals are not permitted on the ice at any time. All Tot skaters should have a safety (bicycle or skating) helmet. Youth scholarships available from the Bloomington Parks Foundation! Families are invited to apply for need-based scholarships for any Parks and Recreation program. Take part in Kid City Break Days, play an exciting season of Bloomington Youth Basketball, learn to ice skate at The Skating School, and more! For more information about how to apply for a scholarship, contact Bloomington Parks and Recreation at 349-3700 or visit bloomington.in.gov/node/3874. Scholarship applications must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the program registration deadline.

Youth—Kid City Summer Camps
Is my child ready for camp? In order to support the success and safety of all individuals registered and participating in Kid City summer camps, it is important that participants are indeed “camp ready.” To assist in determining if your child is “camp ready,” the following criteria have been developed: • Participant is able to participate in the camp program independently or with reasonable accommodations. • Participant is age appropriate (ages 5–12 yrs.) Participants may be aged up or down one grade level with director approval. • Participant is able to use the restroom independently or with minimal verbal prompting. • Participant is comfortable with, and able to interact in, a group environment. • Participant interacts and participates in camp in a manner that is physically and emotionally safe for themselves and others. Our camps are inclusive, serving children with and without disabilities. Inclusion services are available for accommodation needs and support options for your child. Reasonable accommodation requests and registration must be made at least two weeks prior to the registration deadline.
For more information, contact the Inclusive Recreation Coordinator, Amy Shake, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, at 349-3747.
Parents are responsible for transporting their child/ren to and from camp each day. Please bring: a sack lunch, water bottle, and medications. We recommend providing your camper with a durable backpack to carry items. Do not bring money, toys, or cell phones.
All Kid City programs are proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association. This nationally recognized accreditation focuses on program quality, health and safety issues, and requires us to review every facet of our operation. Kid City has voluntarily submitted to this independent appraisal done by camp experts and has earned this mark of distinction.
