LILIES CAN KILL CATS – LEADING CAT CHARITY ISSUES WARNING TO CAT OWNERS Cats can be killed by lilies found in shop-bought bouquets, Cats Protection’s Belfast Adoption Centre has warned. With Mother’s Day and Easter both falling this month, the cat charity has urged owners to be aware of the risks from the popular plants, which are extremely toxic to cats. All parts of the plant are potentially poisonous – the leaves, pollen and flower. The charity has warned that cats can be affected after eating parts of the plant or simply by brushing past the flower and then grooming the pollen from their fur. “We can’t emphasise enough just how dangerous lilies can be to cats and we urge owners to be aware of these risks,” said Belfast Adoption Centre Deputy Manager Andrew Doherty. “Lily poisoning is one of the most common forms of poisoning in cats.” “Signs of poisoning include continued vomiting, blindness, paralysis, renal failure and coma so if a cat exhibits any of these symptoms it is vital to get it to a vet as soon as possible as it will need urgent treatment.” Cats Protection has contacted leading supermarkets and florists to ask them to improve the wording on bouquets containing lilies. While lilies pose the biggest risk to cats, there are a number of other plants which may affect cats. For a full list of potentially dangerous plants, visit the International Cat Care website at www.icatcare.org For more information about cat care or to offer a cat a home, please contact the Belfast Adoption Centre on 028 9048 0202 or belfast@cats.org.uk

DCCB 10TH ANNIVERSARY The Dundonald Community Concert Band are celebrating their 10th Anniversary this month. As part of the celebrations more than 60 members and friends met at The Secret Garden for a dinner on Saturday evening and enjoyed a great night's fun and entertainment. Also, to mark their 10th anniversary the Band had their own March commissioned from the composer, Pete Brydon of Symphonic Secrets. Pete flew over to conduct the first performance on Saturday afternoon. The piece is known as The Moat March and has been enthusiastically adopted by all the band members. At the dinner each band member was presented with a personalised copy of their part. The Band meets every Tuesday evening at the Moat Pavilion in Dundonald from 7-9pm for practice. The membership is drawn from experienced and inexperienced musicians of all ages and abilities. It is the perfect environment for young people to develop their musical abilities and for those who have been away from music for some time to get back into it. The more experienced act as mentors to those less experienced and as a result the band goes from strength to strength. Regular concerts are performed every year using a wide repertoire ranging from the classics right up to the present day. If you have your own instrument and would like to get back into music why not contact us and come along and see what it's like.
EAST BELFAST WOMAN PICKS UP OBE East Belfast woman, Jennifer Hawthorne, was in Buckingham Palace this month picking up an OBE. Jennifer is the Housing Executive’s Head of Communities, and it was her work inassisting in the transformation of communities post conflict across Northern Ireland that was marked by the Queen. Jennifer travelled to London with her mum Greta Wilson, husband Roy and daughter Charlotte for the Investiture ceremony. She said: “It was a huge honour to receive the award and it’s reflective of the great work the Housing Executive has done in our communities to help embed the peace in Northern Ireland. “It was the most wonderful day, made even more special by the fact I was able to celebrate it with my mum, for whom it meant so much, my husband and daughter. “I met wonderful people and the event was every bit as special as I was told it would be. We celebrated afterwards at The Ivy in London.” Jennifer’s outfit for the day was created by Belfast designer Una Rodden. Her hat, and her daughter’s hat, came from Top Hats in Bangor. Jennifer was born, raised and still lives in East Belfast. She is a former pupil of Bloomfield Collegiate, as is her daughter Charlotte. She added: “I am very proud to call myself an East Belfast girl and my only regret is that my hero Van Morrison received his Knighthood the week before and I didn’t get to meet him in person!”

‘WEAR IT BLUE’ FOR AUTISM THIS APRIL Join the rest of the world and turn blue this April by wearing something blue for Autism Awareness Month. Every year during Autism Awareness Month, Autism NI celebrates it’s ‘Wear It Blue’ campaign to encourage everyone to don their blue gear for the day and donate. Could your family, school, company or business hold a ‘Wear It Blue’ day and raise awareness about Autism in Northern Ireland? April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day, a UN designated day where Autism organisations around the world celebrate with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events. In Northern Ireland Autism NI encourages you to embrace the colour ‘blue’ and stand-up for Autism. Autism NI Corporate Fundraising Manager Sarah-Jayne Cassells said: “We are asking local Northern Ireland businesses to show their support this April and join the ‘Wear It Blue’ campaign. It is very simple, choose a day within the month of April and ask all staff to wear something blue. This can be socks, a tie, scarf, shirt or go all out and dress head-to-toe in blue and then donate to Autism NI’s vital services. “This is a fun and very simple way to get involved and raise awareness of this hidden disability. All money that is raised will go towards Autism NI’s Family Support Service that supports over 4000 families each year in Northern Ireland.” With over 30,000 people in Northern Ireland affected by Autism and every year over 1000 children being diagnosed, Autism has become the fastest growing disability in Europe. Therefore Autism NI needs your support so that it can continue to provide vital services to those families and individuals living with Autism. For further information or to request a ‘Wear It Blue’ fundraising pack contact Sarah-Jayne on 028 9040 1729 (option 3), email Sarah-Jayne@autismni.org or visit www.autismni.org.

Having improved their reading skills during a week-long sponsored 'ReadOn', Year 8-10 pupils were moved to learn how their efforts and fundraising will support both children undergoing treatment for cancer, as well as their families. The girls felt proud to be able to support such a worthy cause.

EAST BELFAST CADETS MARK 75 YEARS OF FLYING HIGH The Air Cadet Organisation is celebrating its 75th anniversary and, in Northern Ireland, the festivities started with a Service of Thanksgiving at St Anne’s Cathedral attended by Cadets and Adult Instructors from East Belfast. Back in 1938 Air Commodore Sir John Chamier, known affectionately as ‘the Father of the Air Training Corps,’ set up the original Air Defence Cadet Corps to train young men in various aviation-related skills. Thousands flocked to join and the ADCC proved so popular that, in 1941, in order to provide the means of giving part-time air training to teenagers and young men who might later join the Royal Air Force, the ADCC was formally re-established as the Air Training Corps by Royal Warrant. Much has changed within the organisation which today has more than 42,000 male and female members across the UK, but the passion for Aviation, Adventure and Action remains. Today’s teenage Cadets – and their adult leaders – can expect to benefit from challenging opportunities in leadership, citizenship and adventure training and will work towards nationally recognised academic and vocational qualifications and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. In London the 75th Anniversary Year was launched by The Duchess of Cambridge, taking on the role of Honorary Air Commandant of the Air Cadets, who says her two and a half year-old son, Prince George, is already "obsessed" with the Air Cadets! In Northern Ireland the St Anne’s Service marked a formal start to a year which will be filled with anniversary celebrations of all kinds.
EDEN SETS HER SIGHT ON WORLD TITLE Eden McAllister from East Belfast isn’t a stranger to competition. Throughout Eden’s young life she has entered, taken part in and won competitions in Beauty, modelling, fitness, dance and Rhythmic Gymnastics. Now at the age of 16 and heading towards her seventeenth birthday Eden is an entree for the Ultimate Beauty of the World International Beauty Pageant. The Ultimate Beauty of the World competition defines the true meaning of “Beauty with a purpose” as it supports and has generously raised thousands of pounds for the ‘Make a Wish Foundation’. This is one of the main attractions to Eden for this competition, as she has already over the past few years worked and organised several Charity events of her own, including a Belfast Fashion show extravaganza, helping various charities including Marie Curie, War on Want and Cancer Focus. If successful in the World International Beauty Pageant Eden will then be able to use her title to benefit the Make a Wish Foundation and continue in her enjoyment of charity work, helping others and promoting the charity. This years final will be held at the Culloden Hotel in Co. Down on the 27th March and Eden hopes to see you there not only to enjoy the evening but also to support a great pageant with a worthwhile cause.. WELLNESS FESTIVAL AT MAITRI STUDIO Enjoy a day of taster classes in yoga, pilates, t’ai chi and plenty more at Maitri Studio in East Belfast on 12/13 March! East Belfast’s wellbeing centre at Maitri Studio is celebrating the success of this local business, having grown quickly in the two years since it opened. Claire Ferry established the centre in March 2014 as a calm space for people to enjoy yoga, Pilates, meditation and other classes. "We're really happy to be part of the regeneration that’s happening in East Belfast, with small businesses starting up, celebration of arts and culture, and health activities.” “We wanted to celebrate by involving all the people who have already supported us, as well as inviting new people to try out what we have to offer” she explains. “For the price of one yoga class (£10), you can attend our wellbeing festival on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th March with a whole range of taster classes, talks, stalls and treatments.” There are limited tickets at £15 which includes a 30 minute treatment with a choice of massage, reflexology and other therapies provided at the studio. You can see the full timetable and book online at maitristudio.net. Due to lack of space, there are no children's events this time. Children may attend for free if accompanied by a paying adult, and those age 12 or over may take part in taster classes if accompanied by that adult. Maitri Studio is also working with Tonic Wellness, run by Tessa Greer who provides sound baths at the event. For more information, visit us at: www.maitristudio.net. ERIC MERCER OPTICIANS
CHILDHOOD MYOPIA ON THE INCREASE Short-sightedness (or myopia) in children has more than doubled over the last 50 years. This is one of the key findings of a new study, conducted by researchers at Ulster University. Heredity According to this latest research, nearly one in five teenagers in the UK is now short-sighted. And children with one parent who has myopia are at least three times more likely to be short-sighted than those without a myopic parent. This increases to over seven times more likely when both parents are myopic. The study has also shown that myopia is most likely to occur between the ages of six and 13 years. Other causes While clearly genetics are very important in the development of myopia, other influences are less clear. Although it has long been suspected that more time spent on computers and other near tasks can cause myopia, current evidence suggests such a link is not strong. Other studies have shown that increased time spent outdoors is helpful in preventing or slowing down the progression of myopia. The reasons for this are not entirely clear, but it is thought to relate to the effects of vitamin D production on the growth of young eyes. Advice Commenting on this latest research, the College of Optometrists has strongly recommended that parents take their children for regular sight tests. This is particularly important if one or both parents are themselves short-sighted. And remember, children’s eye tests are free under the National Health Service. It’s never too early to have your children’s eyes tested, as optometrists have special techniques available for testing children who can’t yet read.

March is turning out to be a busy month, with Mother's Day at the start and Easter at the end. It's also a month that gives you hope of spring with lighter evenings and garden bulbs starting to Bloom.
How to turn a tub into a bag:
In January I shared a crochet pattern for a storage tub with you. It was made in a lovely chunky cotton (if you missed it, please feel free to come in to the shop and ask for a copy of the pattern). This month we will build on it, add a lining and handles and turn the same pattern into a fabulous spring bag. If you are a quick sew-er you may even be able to have it ready for Mother's Day!
Measure the inside diameter of your tub. This will depend a bit on your tension as you crochet; mine turned out at 27cm. Then measure the full depth of the side (ie. unfold the tub sides if you folded them down, and then measure). Mine measures 25 cm.You can calculate the circumference form the diameter if you want, but I just measured mine and it came out at 77cm. To calculate how much fabric you need, add a 1.5cm seam allowance to both sides of the measurements for the sides. Mine will be 1.5 +77 + 1.5 = 80cm for the length and 1.5 + 25 + 1.5 = 28 cm for the height. The bottom of the bag needs a piece of fabric with a diameter of 30cm. If the fabric you want is 114cm or more in width you only need 30cm of it. You also need about 2 meters of medium heavy woven cotton ribbon or trimming for handles.
a zig zag seam around the Run two pieces of fabric, to stop fraying. the two short sides of the rectangle Sew together with fronts facing in, making a tube. sure you keep to your 1.5cm seam Making allowance, pin carefully and sew the sides to the round piece of fabric, again with fronts facing. the handles on by hand on the outside Iofsewed the crochet bag, but if you have a sturdy sewing machine you can do this on the machine of you want. fit the fabric lining into the bag, fold in the Now, seam allowance and hand stitch all the way around the rim of the bag. Enjoy using your very own tub handbag!!

Like a lot of women, I like nice things. Coats, bags, scarves, jewellery, shoes. The list goes on, you name it, I like it! I also love to hear those 3 magic words, the words whispered in a late night phone call, the words uttered in a beautiful location with a stunning view, the words that can send my pulse racing. The words? Not 'I Love You' but 'Sale Now On'! I have to admit that '50% off' and 'sale rail' also render me a bit giddy and 'final clearance' makes me down right dizzy! I have made such a success of sale shopping that I rarely like to pay full price and to be honest I now rarely need to! Would you believe me if I told you that in the last month I have bought a dress, an infinity scarf, a piece of costume jewellery and a pair of jeans for ÂŁ19.98 when the total full price should have been ÂŁ156.44? Would you believe me if I told you that they were all bought in higher end high street stores? All true! There are bargains there to be had on a regular basis not just at traditional sale times, you just have to be prepared to look and be prepared to have a good old rummage! So, just to prove it, in this new page, I'll be setting a budget of ÂŁ20 per month and in each edition I will be showing you what I have managed to pick up and hopefully I'll be able to show you that you can get plenty for 20!

Now that Spring has sprung, many of us are looking at our homes anew with a view to refreshing them, so I think it’s time to get inspired and take a little peek at what’s currently trending in the world of interior decor.
Home Trends to Look Out For If you love a bit of Nordic cool, it seems the Scandinavian look is going nowhere this year, with white furniture accents, exposed shelving and a palette of subtle neutral tones being the order of the day. Keep the look beautiful, yet functional, with white painted floorboards, potted greenery and perhaps a striking monochrome rug to add depth. You can pick up inexpensive Scandi design pieces from Ikea in the form of ceramics and textiles to complement your scheme or add a pop of colour. Geometric floor tiles are set to continue their surge in popularity this year. Make a statement of your bathroom or hallway with an interesting pattern in tones of ink blue and smokey grey or charcoal and white. Try Fired Earth for some stunning designs. Artisan goods picked up at local markets or on holiday are very on-trend right now as they tap into the new rustic, industrial look, so keep an eye out for pretty handmade ceramics, woven wall hangings and objects made from reclaimed wood to display in the home. As well as introducing a
rich textural mélange, hand crafted pieces add personality and charm to any home. Pop down to St George’s Market on a Sunday afternoon where you will find a wide variety of local artisans’ handmade wares or browse online at Etsy for handcrafted home accessories with an individual, arty vibe. Gold metallics are everywhere at the moment, with homewares such as wallpaper, cushions and table lamps showcasing the trend. The trick is to sprinkle gold accessories around your home, such as a wall of delicately gilded wallpaper or a gold vase set on a white mantel. Team with greys and teals to bring warmth or with pastels for a more modern feel this Spring. Finally, swap out your beloved slogan cushions for ones with punchy graphics instead. The bolder the graphic, the better, however just keep the rest of your decor simple. Habitat at Homebase has some quirky designs guaranteed to cheer up any sofa. That’s it for this month! Don’t forget to pop over to the blog for more Spring decor inspiration.

A Belfast Mum Well, regardless of what the weather is doing, the calendar tells me spring is approaching, and that means it's time for a good old spring clean. In our case, two recent moves have forced us to dump or gumtree most of our unnecessary junk, and we now only hold on to a loft and a garage full of 'stuff'. We are bursting at the seams, and no matter how many visits to Ikea we make, and how many '40 ways to organise your life' articles we pin on Pinterest, our house remains a bit of a mess. Now, I largely blame the children, because toys and small bits of clothing seem to be the thing that I pick up most when I'm tidying, (apart from breakfast and snack detritus, largely composed of Cheerios). We're lucky that they're still a bit too young for Lego, but between the two of them, there's a lot of plastic tat. I tried to involve the older one in some clearing out, but the binbag for the charity shop remained empty as she declared her undying love for every dogeared soft toy and broken princess wand I removed from the bottom of her toy boxes. So now, I am clearing by stealth. The first rule is that any plastic item from a fast food outlet or a party bag gets thrown out as soon as their attention is diverted to something else. So far, neither child has asked me the whereabouts of any of these toys. Second rule is that anything no longer age appropriate is sent to someone who can use it or the charity shop - most of the baby toys are now in a bag destined for a friend's newborn. Thirdly, if they haven't played with it in living memory, out it goes: bye bye to the princess boardgame, some worthy educational toys and half the soft toy collection. The toy storage is still overflowing, but we are finally making some headway. Now all I have to do is sort out myself and the husband. He is spending a lot of time in the loft, sorting through old paperwork and suitcases full of clothes, while I sit downstairs reading Marie Kondo's 'The Lifechanging Magic of Tidying'. I'm hopeful it will help me let go of some of my things, but until her 'Kondo method' clicks with me, and I only keep items that 'spark joy' or have a current use, it's just another book to add to my collection, and another dust-catcher on the shelf I'm supposed to be clearing out! Wish me luck...

This time lucky? I am a pretty big Leonardo Di Caprio fan and have enjoyed watching him in a variety of roles. When I see him on the bill, I am encouraged to go and see the film as he has rarely starred in anything bad in my opinion. With this in mind, it is strange to me that he has yet to win an Oscar in his 20+ year career as I personally think quite a few of his roles have been Oscar worthy. His career has gone from strength to strength and I often think are less a reflection of the performance and more about the competition at the time. He is hotly tipped to win his first Oscar for 'The Revenant' if the
Golden Globe and Bafta wins are any indication which they are widely reported to be! I have read great reviews of the film but it is a film I have yet to see. Incidentally it is a film that doesn't really appeal to me which is strange because Leonardo Di Caprio stars alongside Tom Hardy in it, and we all know what I think of him! So if any of you have seen 'The Revenant' and haven't seen very much of Leonardo Di Caprio before, the 3 films I recommend you see are 'The Great Gatsby', 'Catch Me If You Can' and 'The Departed' but not necessarily in that order! If you see only one,
make it 'The Departed', he is great in this film and it is one of the best casts ever in my opinion as he stars alongside Matt Damon, Ray Winstone, Martin Sheen, Vera Farmiga and the man most people liken him to, Jack Nicholson!

Stop Smoking with Dundela Pharamcy
9th March is National No Smoking day. This is a good opportunity to try stopping for a day or to start thinking about quitting altogether!
One in every two smokers will die from a smoking related disease. The health benefits from quitting are noticeable immediately. Within 20 minutes your blood pressure and heart rate will reduce, after 48 hours your sense of smell and taste will improve, and after 72 hours your energy levels will be increased. Five years after stopping your risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker and the longer you have stopped the more you reduce your risk of lung cancer. As well as the many health benefits the financial rewards can be a great incentive. On average smoking 20 cigarettes a day costs around £9.60. This is around £67 a week or £270 a month! It’s important that you’re prepared for quitting to be hard work. There is lots of help available for those who feel they may need it. Community Pharmacies are the largest Smoking Cessation provider in Northern Ireland have the highest quit rate in the United Kingdom. The pharmacist will discuss your smoking habits with you and give you lots of practical and motivational advice. We can also recommend a suitable nicotine replac ement product. This is a 12 week programme and is available free of charge. No one can tell you to quit, it has to be your decision! However, if you are ready to stop call into Dundela Pharmacy and ask about our Smoking Cessation service.

THE PROPERTY BLOOM FETHERSTON CLEMENTS Estate Agents
FETHERSTON CLEMENTS APPOINTED TO SELL EXCLUSIVE OBEL APARTMENTS Units set to come to market as significant refurbishment gathers pace Fetherston Clements has been appointed as the selling agent for a number of high-end apartments in The Obel property complex by commercial property agent and asset manager, Lisney. Significant enhancement works are being carried out to the internal finishes of the Belfast city centre apartments, which are expected to go on sale shortly, as well as to the lifts, lobbies and reception areas. Fetherston Clements, which has offices in east Belfast, south Belfast and Bangor, is now accepting expressions of interest for units within Ireland’s tower, which is set to become the pinnacle of luxury city centre living. Will Miscampbell, Partner, Fetherston Clements Estate Agents, said: “The Obel is a truly iconic building which is now set to reach its full potential with the major refurbishment works fully gathering pace. “The pending release of a limited number of high-end apartments on to the market will be one of the most exciting developments in the Belfast property market for some time and we are anticipating huge demand, particularly from young professionals. “Leading local interior designers and landscape architects have been consulted on the internal configuration, finishes and external landscaping to ensure the units meet the high specifications, equalling that of any luxury apartment development across Europe. “To be appointed as the selling agent for The Obel complex is a major endorsement of the work being carried out by Fetherston Clements throughout Greater Belfast and we are hugely excited to be involved with such a landmark project.” Located on Donegall Quay, The Obel is a 27-storey complex comprising of over 200 one, two and threebedroom luxury apartments and duplex and penthouse suites. EXPERT Women’s Well-being This month because of Mother’s day I will talk about women and hormones. A woman’s body is a very complex, finely tuned machine. The regulation of hormones, Menopause, Reproductive health, Urinary tract health and maintenance of bone density are just a few areas that us Ladies need to face throughout or lives.
Jacqui Maxwell Natures Way
I find a number of women are trying to take steps to ward off the symptoms related to all of the above, and we each need different nutrients and supplements to deal with the various stages. The menstrual cycle is were some of trouble of imbalance begins with symptoms from cramps to headaches and mood swings, I usually recommend the herb Agnus Castus which is most useful to help bring the hormones back into rhythm. Magnesium is good for cramps and tension and I always advice Rhodiola for the moods!!! In some cases a huge loss of vital nutrients can occur which will always need replenished with nutrients such as iron and b12. Menopause is a wide area to cover and symptoms really to vary for person to person. I usually advice to deal with individual issue as they creep up!! But the one thing that really bothers us is the Hot flushes/Night sweats. The herb most used is Sage which helps to rebalance the sweat regulating mechanism in the brain, Also cutting down on caffeine intake as this retains heat in the body. Again I would suggest Rhodiola for the moods and irritability through this time off life. Some women find the condition of hair skin and nails is a concern during the menopause due to the deficiencies of minerals, by including a full spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement daily you could help to solve some of this. Finally respect that woman in your life and treat her well. After all, she has a lot to deal with…

‘I don’t know what I did; it just went!’ We often don’t credit our spine with much consideration until there is a problem. The statement above has been uttered by many patients over the years. There can be many different causes but in essence it often boils down to one thing - STRESS!
Chemical stress
Physical stress
Mental Stress
Anything we put into our bodies- the old adage – ‘you are what you eat’ can be so true even with your spinal health. The joints, muscles etc need good input to function well.
repetitive strain, sitting for long period, bad posture, accidents, injuries etc.
work, children, relationships – the list of sources is endless but many of us know when we get overwhelmed our physical health suffers. This can even affect your spine.
‘Prevention is better than cure’. Many of us are now becoming more health conscious and we now see patients of all ages coming in before their back ‘goes’ as they want to prevent problems.
Dr Paul Pringle is delighted to welcome Dr Rachel Howe to Pringle Chiropractic, Holywood Road, Belfast and would like to celebrate for the month of March, any new patients will receive their Initial Consultation for £25 (usual price £55). Dr Howe has a keen interest in anti-natal care, pregnancy and children, some of her youngest patients have been just a few days old!
