LOCAL BUSINESS TAKING OVER THE LOCAL AMERICAN SPORTS SCENE A Co. Down based online business is expecting a busy period following a surge in the popularity of American sports in Northern Ireland. UK American Sports Store (www.ukamericansportsstore.co.uk), a leading supplier of official American sports apparel for NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL teams, is the brain-child of local entrepreneur Cameron McKay and has experienced significant sales growth this year. Speaking about recent business development, Cameron said: "American sports have never been more popular in Northern Ireland with top fixtures becoming more accessible to watch on TV or actually attend in person. From ice hockey to basketball, baseball to American Football, it’s a really exciting and unique sports scene so it’s no wonder why more local people want to own the sports apparel of their favourite teams. "In particular, the continued success of the Belfast Giants and their recent acquisition of Nathan Robinson has made ice hockey an extremely popular sport in Northern Ireland. The arrival of NFL games held at Wembley Stadium and NBA games at the O2 arena has also had a positive impact on the influence of the American sports scene back home. “With another three NFL games due to take place in the UK this year, we are expecting continued local demand and I am confident that people wearing US sports apparel will soon be a familiar fixture on the streets of villages, towns and cities right across Northern Ireland." "Our customers are not only from the UK and Ireland. We also get orders from right across Europe so we understand the need to provide a fast and reliable service especially during the busy festive period,” said Cameron. For further information, visit www.ukamericansportsstore.co.uk.

MOUNT STEWART CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF £8M PROJECT TO RESTORE FAMOUS HOUSE Mount Stewart, on the shores of Strangford Lough, today celebrated the completion of a three year, £8million restoration project to bring the famous house back to its former glory. Visitors to the National Trust landmark will be able to enjoy the reinvigorated house from 20 April with previously unopened rooms and hundreds of new items on display. Commenting on the project, Jon Kerr, manager at Mount Stewart said: “This ambitious project to fully restore Mount Stewart is the National Trust’s most significant investment in Northern Ireland in quite some time. It has been a hugely exciting project that brings this family home back to its former glory and truly showcases the history of this special place. “We are also pleased to announce that a large collection of internationally significant items can now be viewed here, on loan from the Estate of the Marquess of Londonderry. Combined with one of the top gardens in the world, we have a destination which offers a fascinating insight in to the stories of the Stewart family. “I’d like to thank everyone who played a part in completing this project. From joinery apprentices and builders to expert conservators and curators, this project has been a huge team effort that has really captured the imagination of our supporters and visitors.” “I’d also like to recognise the generosity of the Marquess of Londonderry who made it possible for so many amazing items to return to Mount Stewart.” Lady Rose Lauritzen’s family has lived at Mount Stewart since the 18th century. Speaking about the restoration she said: “It is an enormous pleasure to see this family home restored and reinvigorated. As well as the fabulous restoration, we will also see a huge number of items come to Mount Stewart from places that were connected to my family history. “I believe it is the single most important contribution to improve the presentation of this house since my grandmother, Edith, Lady Londonderry, made it her principle residence in the 1920s. “I am truly excited to share the house with our visitors and look forward to seeing the hallways and rooms filled with people once again.” Heather Thompson, Director for the National Trust in Northern Ireland said: “As a conservation charity we passionately believe in protecting our unique heritage while providing even more access to our visitors and supporters. This project has also been a valuable opportunity to support the Northern Ireland economy through a range of contractors and businesses while also keeping vital conservation skills alive. “Mount Stewart is already a key player in the tourism industry on the island of Ireland, welcoming more than

160,000 visitors last year. With this fabulous restoration we expect to welcome even more visitors to this very special place over the coming years.” As well as the many historical items and beautiful represented rooms, the project has ensured that the structure of the building is now sound. Important upgrades have resulted in more efficient heating that meets strict conservation standards. Nearly every room in the house has also been redecorated following extensive repairs to plasterwork.

Highlights for visitors to Mount Stewart after 20 April will include: - A selection of rooms open to view for the first time, including the butler’s silver store, family and guest bedrooms, and the billiards room where visitors can find out more about key members of the family, in particular Charles and Edith Londonderry and their daughter Mairi. -

A world class collection of family portraits by Sir Thomas Lawrence, recognised by many as the greatest British portrait painter of the early 19th century.

-

One of Northern Ireland’s most famous paintings, Stubb’s ‘Hambletonian, Rubbing Down’ has been given a brand new frame. Hambletonian was one of the best thoroughbred racehorses of the late 18th century, having won all of his races, except one.

-

A collection of beautiful table silver including ambassadorial silver used by Charles Stewart while British Ambassador in Vienna 1814-22; a set of early 19th century racing cups including three Doncaster Cups, one of which was won by the great racehorse Hambletonian.

Mount Stewart is set to feature in a six week documentary on UTV this summer. The documentary has been following the progress of the project for three years and will offer a fascinating insight to this huge project. HAY FEVER RELIEF THE NATURAL WAY

Summer is almost here and now is the time to think about taking preventative action against hay fever if you happen to be one of the many unfortunate people who are affected by pollen. Pollen is the name given to the fine powder that is produced by plants, trees or flowers to fertilise other plants, trees or flowers of the same species. Strictly speaking, hay fever is caused by an allergy to grass or hay pollens. Grass pollen is the most common cause and tends to affect people every year from about May to July. Symptoms are due to your immune system reacting to the pollen. Cells on the lining of the nose and eyes release histamine and other chemicals when they come in contact with pollen. This causes inflammation in the nose (rhinitis) and eyes (conjunctivitis). Sometimes the sinuses and throat can also be affected. Luffa is a useful herb to take if symptoms affect the eyes and nose. It acts quickly and seems to help both a blocked nose and a runny nose, as well as watery and itchy eyes and a tickly throat. Nettles are effective at reducing histamine type reactions, drink the tea or take the tincture. Pollinosan hay fever tablets relieve symptoms of Hay fever in the homoeopathic tradition. .Pcynogenol capsules are also proving to be an effective treatment for hay fever and allergic rhinitis. These capsules have a powerful antioxidant activity which is 50 times more potent than vitamin C. The antioxidant effect helps halt the rush of histamine and prevents symptoms developing. Sufferers have noticed benefits within a week. A dosage of 50-150mgs per day is recommended.

ROAMER

SKINCARE AWARE At Roamer Holistic Health & Beauty we’re all about skin health. The first step to achieving a glowing complexion is a good skincare routine and it’s never too early (or too late!) to start. A good skin care regimen is as important as brushing your teeth and maintaining a healthy diet! The first step in formulating your individual skin care routine is to identify what kind of skin you have. Is it dry or oily, light or dark, wrinkled or smooth, or somewhere in between? Ingredients in each skin care product should be tailored to meet the needs of your particular skin type. There are various skin types including Dry, Oily, Combination/Normal and no matter what type you have, the basic steps are the same: cleanse, moisturise, repair and prevent.

Cleanse

No matter what your skin type it is ideal to wash your face every morning and evening. Soap and facial wipes can be harsh and drying to the skin so use a cleanser specifically formulated for the face. Look for products that are designed for your skin type and then experiment to find the one that works best for you. If you have dry skin a cream based cleanser is more suited for gentle cleansing. If you have oily skin a clay based cleanser will help with excess oil absorption. Don’t give in to the temptation to wash your face every time it feels greasy. By doing so, you’ll kick the sebaceous gland’s production of oil into overdrive as the skin tries to replace the lubrication it loses when it is washed. For combination/normal skin experiment to find the right cleanser; one that doesn’t overdry the skin but does a great job cleaning off dirt and oil is what you’re after.

Moisturise

Moisturiser is a must for all skin types but it is about using the correct one for your skin. Oily skin generally doesn’t need extra moisture but there are moisturisers out there for those with oily skin that won’t clog pores. Dermalogica’s Oil Control Lotion or Oil Free Matte SPF 30 are ideal products for helping to keep any shine at bay. For drier skin a moisturiser with active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid is great while a lighter product is great for combination skin. Tips: • Use moisturiser when the skin is still damp. This helps the skin lock in extra moisture. • Only use as much moisturiser as you need. Over-moisturising can cause clogged pores, leading to breakouts and is a waste of your product

Repair

After cleansing and moisturising, your skin care routine should tailor to the specific conditions that affect your skin. For wrinkles and sagging, look for products that contain antioxidants and are packed with vitamins A & E. Antioxidants repair cells and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, while vitamin A helps fade brown spots and smooth roughness making skin firmer and tighter. For red or irritated skin, use a product that contains vitamin C. To reduce the appearance of pores, look for products that both reduce the amount of bacteria on the face and fill in excess space left by enlarged pores. If you have acne, there are plenty of products to choose from, although cleansers containing acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid would work best. The ideal acne treatment both reduces breakouts while not overdrying the skin. Finding a product that is tailored to your skin care concerns can greatly improve the appearance of your skin and improve skin conditions.

THE GOOD LIFE FIRST OF A FOUR PART SERIES ON HOME PRODUCE BROUGHT TO YOU BY LOCAL BOY STEPHEN MOORE

PART 1:

HOMEBREW When most people hear the term homebrew it conjures up images of Jesse Duke from the Dukes of Hazzard, lots of pipes and bubbling liquids hidden from Boss Hogg, and moonshine that will put hairs on your chest. Well despite the wish to partake in some bonnet slidiong and meeting the glamourous Daisy Duke, it isnt like that at all. My wife may wish that I would hide my fermentation vessels somewhere other than in our wardrobe, but thats about as controversial as it gets. I first started brewing my own wine as an experiment to see if i could produce something vaguely drinkable in these times of austerity, but what i didint count on was the ease with which it took to make a tasty beverage that even friends and relatives enjoy. We here in East Belfast are lucky to have Irelands premier homebrew stockist right on our doorstep, Natures Way in Ballyhackamore has all the kit and ingredients you will need. This year I made a ‘harvest’wine with plums and raspberries from my garden and blackberries from the Comber Greenway but like most I started out , and continue to make batches, with various kits available. This is the easiest method for a beginner whether it is wine, beer or ciders that you are interested in, the possibilities are endless. All the instructions and essential sundries come with these kits, the homebrewer just needs to have food grade vessels to ferment in plus a few small items and they are good to go. Batches of wine can be made in anything from seven days to several months depending on your methods, and controlling your ingredients list is a huge benefit to homebrew as many people are wary of flagrant use of a broad spectrum of chemicals that are in use in food production. There is lots of help to anyone starting out via internet forums, suppliers, and even the Belfast Winemakers Circle ( which meets in Belmont Tower ). Saving money first pushed me to try homebrew, and it may be the same for you, but it soon becomes and interesting pastime of experimenting with different recipes and methods, why not give it a go?

Help Save Our Courthouse! Ards and North Down Solicitors’ Association wants everyone in the local community to take an active part in securing the future of Newtownards Courthouse which has been threatened with closure by the Department of Justice. Newtownards is one of eight courthouses earmarked to shut, with a proposal to transfer all its business to the Belfast Courts. Simon Chambers of Russell & Co Solicitors explains: “We need local justice for local people, and Ards Courthouse provides just that. If it closes, the most vulnerable in our society will be disadvantaged. Intimidated witnesses, children, the elderly and those with a disability – all are better served by a justice system delivered in a location that is easily accessible and familiar to them. “Ards Courthouse is one of the busiest in the country, with a high volume of civil and criminal matters, family and youth court sittings being managed in a way that serves the local population well,” he continues. “Moving all this to Belfast will have a hugely detrimental effect on the most vulnerable in our society who deserve local access to local justice. There will be serious inconvenience caused by the length of travel, higher parking costs and an unfamiliar and intimidating environment to court users.” Backing for the campaign has been gathering momentum, with local MPs Jim Shannon and Lady Sylvia Hermon voicing their wholehearted support.

Access to justice will be limited for many of the most vulnerable in society Newtownards Courthouse is one of the busiest courthouses in Northern Ireland with the highest volume of business outside Belfast and is the sole remaining Courthouse in the new super council area It currently deals with all civil, criminal and family matters in the Borough Council area The Family Proceedings Court routinely deals with the largest number of family and children’s law applications of any court outside Belfast Cases need to be heard somewhere – Belfast will become overloaded and there will be inevitable delays in court business as a result It will cause real inconvenience and additional cost for victims, witnesses, plaintiffs and defendants who will have to travel further Bangor lost its Court in 2013 and now the Department for Justice are proposing the closure of Newtownards Court, 6 miles away. Local members of the public and businesses will now have to travel to the already overcrowded Belfast Courts in order to make use of the Court services.
