~ Top nurses launch a new drive for compassion and courage Called Compassion in Practice, it has been drawn up by Jane Cummings, the chief nursing officer for England (CNO), NHS Commissioning Board, and Viv Bennett, director of nursing at the Department of Health. They are publishing a new three-year vision and strategy for nursing, midwifery and care staff that aims to build a culture of compassionate care in all areas of practice. They say that to achieve this, the enduring values of nursing and care must underpin our work. Our draft vision was underpinned by six fundamental values: care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment - with six areas of action to support professionals and care staff to deliver this excellent care. http://www.commissioningboard.nhs.uk/files/2012/12/compassion-in-practice.pdf

~ National survey of NHS accident and emergency (A&E) departments A major national survey shows people having to wait longer to speak to a doctor or nurse and their stay in A&E departments in England is getting longer. However most people surveyed said that they still had confidence and trust in the health professionals who treated them. Perceptions of the cleanliness of A&E units have also substantially improved from previous surveys. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) published results from the fourth national accident and emergency (A&E) survey, carried out by 147 acute and specialist NHS trusts with major accident and emergency departments in England. Almost 46,000 people who attended A&E departments during January, February or March 2012 completed the survey. http://www.cqc.org.uk/media/major-national-survey-shows-people-having-wait-longer-speak-doctor-ornurse-and-their-stay-ae-

~ Malnutrition toolkit for commissioners and providers This toolkit contains guidance for commissioners and providers on defining the relevant, measurable outcomes related to nutritional care within services in order to gain value for money, a summary of national nutritional care standards, recommendations and tools for assessment, development, education and training. http://www.bapen.org.uk/pdfs/bapen_pubs/bapen-toolkit-for-commissioners-and-providers.pdf

~ Health visiting case studies highlighting innovations The Department of Health has published 20 case studies highlighting innovations developed as part of the Health visiting programme. These case studies have been developed by organisations delivering services for children and families. The focus is on improvements in service quality and innovation. They are intended as a resource for sharing and learning amongst NHS public health professionals and early years staff. http://www.dh.gov.uk/health/2012/12/health-visitor-case-studies/

~ Dr Foster publishes 2012 hospital guide The 2012 Dr Foster Hospital Guide containing performance data on every hospital trust in England is now available. As well as mortality indicators, this year’s Hospital Guide highlights information on the vital link between quality and efficiency. Methodology documents for all indicators are available on the Dr Foster website, together with a 'My Hospital Guide' which enables healthcare professionals and consumers to interrogate the data and share their views. Findings show that many acute hospitals are often working at between 95 and 100% capacity, leaving patients at risk; infections becoming more difficult to control; orderly management of admission and discharge becoming strained; and the likelihood of mistakes occuring increasing. The guide suggests that many of the people currently in hospital beds could be treated in a more appropriate setting. It particularly highlights the number of frail elderly people finding themselves admitted to hospital because of lack of access to more relevant treatment. ~ Ambulance handover delays – zero tolerance The NHS Confederation has published 'Zero tolerance: making ambulance handover delays a thing of the past'. Handing over a patient from an ambulance to an ED is expected to take no more than 15 minutes. But as the National Audit Office highlighted in its review of ambulance services in June 2011, only around 80 per cent of handovers meet this expectation. This report is intended to support healthcare leaders in their efforts to make handover delays a never event in their local health economies. It includes 10 key recommendations. http://www.nhsconfed.org/Publications/Documents/Zero_tolerance061212.pdf

~ Improving General practice in London The King's Fund has published 'General practice in London: supporting improvements in quality'. This is an independent report giving fresh analysis of the challenges faced by general practice in London, and the improvements that will be needed to address them. The report is aimed at those who have a role in leading quality improvement in primary care, namely GPs working in London and leaders of primary care providers, clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), and the London region of the NHS Commissioning Board. http://www.kingsfund.org.uk/publications/articles/general-practice-london-supporting-improvements-quality

~ Occupational exposures to bloodborne viruses The HPA has published 'Eye of the Needle: UK surveillance of significant occupational exposures to bloodborne viruses in healthcare workers: Dec 2012'. It provides insight into the current burden of occupational exposures to bloodborne viruses and the challenges still to be met in managing them. It includes all significant occupational exposures to BBVs in healthcare workers (HCWs) that occurred between 1st January 1997 and 31st December 2011, and were reported to the HPA’s enhanced surveillance system by 17th October 2012. http://www.hpa.org.uk/Publications/InfectiousDiseases/BloodBorneInfections/EyeOfTheNeedle/1212Eyeofth eNeedle2012Report/

~ First international physiotherapy clinical guidance document. Physiotherapists from the UK have led the development of the first international physiotherapy clinical guidance document. The framework addresses the correct use of evidence-based interventions, such as manipulation or exercise prescription, that have previously been associated with stroke and other pathologies. In particular, it focuses on screening for the risks associated with cervical arterial dysfunction. http://www.csp.org.uk/news/2012/11/23/uk-leads-way-international-physiotherapy-guidance

~ The Liverpool Care Pathway Review - Behind the Headlines from NHS Choices An independent review of the controversial palliative care practice known as the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) has been announced. The Liverpool Care Pathway Review aims to improve care of the dying. The LCP is intended to allow people with a terminal illness to die with dignity. But there have been a number of high-profile allegations that people have been placed on the LCP without consent or their friend’s or family’s knowledge http://www.nhs.uk/news/2012/11November/Pages/What-is-the-Liverpool-Care-Pathway.aspx
