~ Compassionate care found in pilot hospital inspections The Care Quality Commission has published findings from its 18 pilot hospital inspections completed last year. The chief inspector of hospitals led teams of specialist inspectors and patient representives to complete this work between July and December. The report concludes that compassionate care is alive and well in the NHS. Inspectors found care and compassion among frontline staff in every hospital visited, as well as a strong commitment to the NHS. http://www.cqc.org.uk/media/emerging-findingsradical-new-approach-hospital-inspection-%E2%80%93-compassionate-care-alive-and-well
~ Campaigning against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM): Joint Statement and Report Tackling FGM in the UK - Intercollegiate recommendations for identifying, recording and reporting RCM and Intercollegiate Group launches ground-breaking recommendations for tackling Female Genital Mutilation. There is also a need for wider awareness of FGM as a crime among health professionals and identification of what is required by the police and prosecutors from health professionals to enable effective reporting of FGM crime. RCM - FGM Report
~ Spread of multi drug resistant TB limited to high-risk groups in the UK MDR-TB most commonly spreads between people born in the UK who have a history of drug use, or within specific ethnic communities, according to a new study from Public Health England (PHE) published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases today on 4 March 2014. PHE highlights the importance of genetic strain typing of multi drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) to increase case identification.https://www.gov.uk/government/news/spread-of-multi-drug-resistant-tb-limited-to-high-riskgroups-in-the-uk
~ NHS to tackle long waits for dementia assessments NHS England will invest ÂŁ90 million in diagnosing two thirds of people with dementia by March 2015. As part of this, NHS England will work with local areas where we know that in some it takes up to 25 weeks to carry out diagnostic assessments whereas in others the wait is as little as six weeks on average. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/nhs-to-tackle-long-waits-for-dementia-assessments
~ New autism standards push for more consistent care across England NICE has published a new Quality Standard on autism. The evidence-based guidance is designed to standardise and improve the care and management of autism across the health and social care sector for children and adults. Eight measures benchmark quality care for people with autism including diagnostic assessment within three months of referral. http://www.cot.co.uk/news/new-autism-standards-push-more-consistent-care-across-england
~ Making our health and care system fit for an ageing population The King's Fund has published Making our health and care systems fit for an ageing population. This report sets out a framework and tools to help local service leaders improve care across nine key components. Within each component of care, the report sets out the goal the system should aim for, presents key evidence about works, gives examples of local innovations, and some pointers to major reviews and relevant guidance. It argues that if the health and care systems can get services right for our older population, they should be easier to get it right for other service users. The final section of the report discusses how to make integrated care happen. http://www.kingsfund.org.uk/publications/makingour-health-and-care-systems-fit-ageing-population
~ Relationship between multi-morbidity and utilisation of health and social care The University of York Centre for Health Economics has published research paper 96 The importance of multimorbidity in explaining utilisation and costs across health and social care settings: evidence from South Somerset’s symphony project. The paper examines patterns of health and social care utilisation and costs for the local population to identify which groups of people would most benefit from better integrated care. South Somerset’s Symphony project is designed to establish greater collaboration between primary, community, acute and social care, particularly for people with complex conditions. http://www.york.ac.uk/che/news/research-paper-96/
~ Pre-nursing experience pilots The Francis report recommended that student nurses should spend time working directly with patients before their degree course to increase the focus in nurse training and education on the practical requirements of delivering compassionate care and evidence of appropriate values, attitudes and behaviours. HEE recruited 165 potential nurses to the pilots last year and their life-changing experiences have been recorded in this booklet. Pre-Nursing Experience Pilot: the journey so far.
~ Nursing apprenticeships The Department of Health has announced that, for the first time, apprentices will be able to train directly towards becoming a nurse. A degree level nursing apprenticeship is being developed which will widen access to nursing. It will be targeted at the brightest and best healthcare assistants who have proven they can give high quality care to patients, but do not have the academic qualifications necessary to get on to a nursing degree. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-nursing-apprenticeships-forthose-who-have-proven-they-can-care
