~ Proposals for urgent and emergency care The national medical director of NHS England has published 'Transforming urgent and emergency care services in England Urgent and Emergency Care Review End of Phase 1 Report: High quality care for all, now and for future generations' The report has proposed a fundamental shift in provision of urgent care, with more extensive services outside hospital and patients with more serious or life threatening conditions receiving treatment in centres with the best clinical teams, expertise and equipment. Primary Care Commissioning: http://www.pcc-cic.org.uk/article/sir-bruce-keogh-proposes-new-blueprint-urgent-and-emergency-care-acrossengland
~ Review by Monitor of the provision of walk-in centre services in England Almost one in four NHS walk-in centres have closed in recent years, despite being popular with patients. Research from the health sector regulator Monitor suggests that patients may not be able to access the care they need, in particular where there are problems with access to local GP services. This review examined the possible impact of closures of walk-in centres on patients, whether commissioning arrangements for walk-in centres are working well for patients, and whether payment mechanisms related to walk-in centres and GP services are generating benefits for patients. http://www.monitor.gov.uk/sites/default/files/publications/Walk%20in%20centres%20report%2011%2011%2013_0.pdf
~ Calling for action against Female Genital Mutilation A unique coalition of royal colleges and trade unions including the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has launched a ground-breaking report containing nine recommendations for tackling Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the UK. Despite being banned in the UK since 1985, it is estimated that 66,000 women and girls have undergone FGM, with 24,000 girls at risk. The report aims to help health and social care workers identify at risk girls and treat them as potential victims of crime, working with the police. It also calls for better data collection and reporting of FGM to improve awareness and understanding of the abusive practice. http://www.rcn.org.uk/newsevents/news/article/uk/calling_for_action_against_female_genital_mutilation
~ Antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections The advisory committee on antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections has published it's 4th annual report which covers the period February 2012 to March 2013.The committee has provided independent, evidence-based advice and recommendations to the Department of Health England (DH) across the entirety of its remit of healthcare-associated infection, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial prescribing (AMP). This year areas focused on by the subgroups have been organism [Escherichia coli, methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA)], practice (HCAI surveillance review, quality improvement, diagnosis and reporting) and speciality (surgical site infection) specific The report also includes ARHAI's work plan for 2013 to 2014. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/advisory-committee-on-antimicrobial-resistance-and-healthcareassociated-infections-annual-reports
~ New website comparing adult social care services launched Adult Social Care Outcomes Framework (ASCOF) data is being presented in a website that allows people to find out more about care services. On the website you can select your local authority from the map or drop-down menu, or type in your postcode to find out how carers and people receiving local authority funded care and support in your area rate factors such as: quality of their life; satisfaction with care services; and feeling safe https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-website-comparing-adult-social-care-services-launched
~ Social media and the NHS Three guidance documents aimed at helping the NHS realise the benefits of social media and implement a more permissive approach to its use has been published by NHS Employers: HR and social media in the NHS - provides examples to help human resources managers, leaders and communications staff use social media more effectively. It says it is becoming central to the on-going effectiveness of the NHS. It argues that there is a need for a more open approach alongside greater clarity on professional behaviour and the importance of confidentiality. http://www.nhsemployers.org/Aboutus/Publications/Pages/HR-social-media-NHS.aspx
Increasing staff engagement with social media - looks at how social media can improve staff engagement. It is aimed at the HR community but will also be of interest to communications teams and line managers. http://www.nhsemployers.org/Aboutus/Publications/Pages/staff-engagement-social-media.aspx
Social media for chief executives: the essential guide - explores how social media can help NHS chief executives develop a collaborative leadership style for use in the complex system of health and social care. http://www.nhsemployers.org/Aboutus/Publications/Pages/Social-media-for-chief-executives-the-essentialguide.aspx
~ Smart Guides to Engagement NHS Networks have added two further guides to their 'Smart Guides to Engagement series'. Staff engagement: good for everyone' - aims to help clinical commissioning groups to develop and sustain engagement with their staff and points to sources of help to achieve this. Much of the advice is also applicable to service provider organisations which the CCG commissions. Developing pathways: using patient carer experiences - provides help to CCGs adopt an approach to developing pathways reflecting what matters to patients, carers and family members. It offers examples and points to sources of help to achieve success. http://www.networks.nhs.uk/nhsnetworks/smart-guides/
~ Information service for parents The Department of Health has published 'Service evaluation report: information service for parents (ISP)'. The report evaluates the effectiveness of the Information service for parents (ISP), which provides information to new and expectant parents. The NHS ISP was launched in May 2012 to provide trusted, high-quality information to new and expectant parents. The report evaluated the effectiveness of the service in its first 10 months and identifies areas of achievement as well as areas for the service to develop in future. The report also looks at the reach of the service and what could be done to increase sign-ups and raise awareness, particularly among hard to reach groups. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/information-service-for-parents-evaluation-report
