Gretel Well I do, imagine if someone ate our house? Hansel I don’t think I would mind, hopefully they would eat our stepmother too. Gretel That’s not very nice. Hansel Well neither is she. Now, I quite like the look of those candy windows. (He goes off to eat the windows, leaving Gretel looking worried.) Background and characters Based on the traditional German fairy tale Hansel and Gretel, this scene explores what happens when the two children are lost in the woods and are trying to find their way out. While Gretel is trying to find the way, Hansel is not being very helpful and is not only worrying about his hunger but gets distracted by other things. He sees a little bird who is flying around him and he has the urge to follow the bird. Gretel is unsure but gives in, as she sees no other option. The bird leads them further into the woods where it becomes increasingly dense and creepy. When they finally see the cottage made of candy, they are relieved to have finally found food and begin to nibble away at the walls and windows.
