Live-Marking
Over the years, I’ve used live–marking – marking in lesson time with the student by my side – to embed formative assessment in my classroom and reduce the workload burden.
Corrections
Creating a dialogue
Zonal feedback is a targeted approach to live–marking that ensures teachers and students focus on a specific area of the work. ❶ Choose just one area to mark. ❷ Draw a box around it.
@TEACHERTOOLKIT
MARK. PLAN. TEACH.
Build in regular opportunities for students to recap on work as part of your curriculum plan.
❶
How often should I mark students’ work?
Idea 4
Ensure your students understand the key assessment points, then develop a simple marking code that works for both you and your students (and is in line with your school policy).
[It is important] for the teacher to communicate the intentions of the lesson and the notions of what success means for these intentions.
Professor John Hattie
Rank

Spoof
Give students different pieces of work, asking them to rank them and identify why one is better than the other.
Get students to grade each other’s work and identify the reasons why marks are secured or not.
Give students a ‘spoof’ or ‘mock’ assessment and ask them to assess their own performance against the success criteria.
Question
❹ Offer precise feedback (written or verbal).
Developing a marking code
❷
Give students enough time to act on the feedback and check they’ve done it properly.

A marking code will help feedback make sense and have demonstrable outcomes for you and your students. www.TeacherToolkit.co.uk
A good starting point for reducing workload is to keep marking codes as simple as possible.

CLASSROOM RESOURCES: OUTDOOR LEARNING Teaching outside the classroom improves pupils' engagement with learning as well as their health and wellbeing, but how can primary teachers link curriculum objectives effectively with enjoyable and motivational outdoor learning? The National Curriculum Outdoors series shows how you can enrich pupils’ learning with the benefits of the natural environment. The books are packed full of photocopiable lesson plans that cover each curriculum subject for every year group. Outdoor learning experts Deborah Lambert, Michelle Roberts and Sue Waite inspire primary teachers to use outdoor contexts as part of their everyday teaching and showcase how to embed curriculum teaching outside.

LESSON OBJECTIVES
MAIN ACTIVITIES
Ensure that there is a safe outdoor area with a selection of leaves and other natural objects available for the children to collect. Ensure that there are enough dry sticks to make a fire.
We are learning to explore the outside area and create our own poems about fire.
Exploring the sense of smell
Resources • Cups and coloured water • ‘Magic dust’ – you could use sand, glitter, etc. • Sticks and fire-making kit, and water to extinguish fires • Marshmallows if appropriate • A poem describing fire
Previous learning Recap the previous session and the vocabulary used by the children.
Challenge 1 (individual)
Challenge 2 (whole class)
Magic potion
Making a fire Build a fire as a class. Collect sticks that are dry and sort into different-sized piles. Talk through with the children the step-by-step principles to making a fire:
• Participate in discussion about what is being read to them, taking turns and listening to what others say.
Children are each given a plastic/paper cup and are asked to go off and explore the area to collect items which have a smell. Talk to the children about what is acceptable to collect and what could be harmful, and ensure that you have sealed or marked off any areas that they cannot explore. They will be making a potion with the items they collect.
Early Learning Goals
• Can they identify any of the trees or plants?
• Uses their phonic knowledge to write words in ways that match their spoken sounds.
• Can they find any woodland flowers that smell?
National Curriculum Content • Listen to and discuss a range of poems and stories. • Be encouraged to link what they read or hear read to their own experiences. • Discuss word meanings, linking new meanings to those already known.
• Uses vocabulary and forms of speech that are increasingly influenced by their experiences of books. • Uses language to imagine and recreate roles and experiences in play situations.
They should not pick items unless they have fallen already or are plentiful, in which case they should only take one for their woodland potion. They fill their cup up and then add coloured water and some ‘magic dust’. They must not drink their potion but are asked to think of a name for it and describe its magical powers. Keep them in a safe place.
Assess and evaluate hazards and risks in your setting. See the health and safety chapter.
• Build a pyramid (using sticks). • Add the fuel (tinder, dry leaves, cotton wool and petroleum jelly). • Strike, light and feed (use a fire striker). Ensure that you have water to put the fire out prior to lighting – see fire-lighting safety principles in the health and safety chapter. Once the fire has been built and lit, talk to the children about: • Can they describe the fire?
• Support making the woodland potions safely.
Health & Safety
• Make a base (using dry sticks).
• What do they see?
ADULT ROLES
CONSIDER
• Clear a space (checking for any stones in the area).
• What does the fire sound like?
• Support in fire-making and create a safe zone around the fire.
• How would they describe the sounds?
• Enable experimentation with safety.
• What does it smell like? Can they describe the smell?
• Ask and repeat the questions in the activities to develop children’s vocabulary.
• Can they write some describing words about fire and its smell onto leaves?
WARM UP IDEAS Children discuss the woodland area and observe any changes that have happened since the previous progression. Ask the children what happens in autumn. What have they seen in the outdoor area? What have they found? Discuss the previous progressions and talk to them about the senses and the activities they have completed. What other senses do we use?
Read the children a poem about fire. Ask the children to think about the words used in the poem.
Introductory activity
• Can they think about some words they could use to create a fire poem?
The children sit in a circle and play the game ‘leaf scramble’ (previously played in Progression 1) to recap which trees live in the outdoor area.
• Can they find some coloured leaves to make the shape of a fire and write on some words to describe the smell and sight of fire?
Introduce a new game: ‘drop the pine cone’. The children sit in a circle and close their eyes. The adult taps one child on the shoulder, who then has to silently move and drop a pine cone behind another child. The child who has had the pine cone dropped behind them must chase the other child round the circle before they get back to their original place.

EVALUATION/FOLLOW ON
PLENARY
Talk to the children about the sense of smell. Today they are going to need to use their sense of smell to explore the outdoor area in this session. What do the children know about noses?
• Can they write an acrostic poem using the word ‘fire’, using some of their describing words written on their fire leaves? • Can they create firework shapes with their leaves?
• What went well and why? • What didn’t go as well as expected? • What could be changed? • Who stood out and why? • What has inspired the children today? • How could this be used back in class to encourage some creative writing? • Can they write a story about a woodland potion? • Can they further develop their poems about fire? • How can we add to our senses adjectives tree?

It's easy to think that children are naturally just fussy eaters. Yet, without realising it, we are actually creating many of the problems ourselves with the things we do and say to our children around food. This little book tells you how to start again. It will give you easy-to-follow, easy-toremember rules to help re-programme your child into a happy, healthy, adventurous eater.
Tried and tested on real children, these ideas encourage a sense of exploration, accomplishment, challenge, creativity, boldness and outside-the-box thinking. They'll cost you nothing – or next-to-nothing. All you need is a playful attitude, a sense of adventure and perhaps just a tiny hint of mischief here and there!
Let's face it, life with kids can be exhausting and exasperating. This book has everything you need to know to make your day-to-day life as a parent easier. Based on in-depth interviews with child psychologists, it gives you techniques, tactics, tips and tricks that research shows actually work. PB • 9781472946744 • 210 x 148mm • 64pp • £5.99

It's 1940 and war is under way. In Sheffield, a brother and sister set out to solve a mystery. In Dachau, two boys come up with a plan to help a Polish prisoner escape. But when the bombs start falling on Sheffield, and the German boys' plan hurls them unwittingly into the midst of the action, the children's adventures become a terrifying fight to survive.
It's 1381 and the king, Richard II, has imposed a new poll tax. Tilda and her ploughman father were already struggling to make ends meet – as serfs they have no right to earn wages for their work. Tilda is desperate for a better life, so when the villagers begin to rebel she is swept up in the excitement. But the peaceful rebellion they hoped for soon ignites into violence, mayhem and treachery. Tilda's fight for a better life is only just beginning.

But a Greek king named Antiochus was hungry for more power.
And then he turned his attention to Judea and Samaria. ‘I will not allow you to be Jews any longer!’ he told the people there. ‘Instead, you will worship Zeus and the other Greek gods, as I do.’
First he attacked Egypt. Then he sent a fleet of ships to capture the island of Cyprus.

Molly Potter, illustrated by Sarah Jennings
Molly Potter, illustrated by Sarah Jennings
Molly Potter, illustrated by Sarah Jennings
Young children can find it really frustrating when they can’t express their emotions or articulate what they’re feeling. Cue: It's OK to Cry! Written with boys in mind, because they are often encouraged to suppress their feelings, Molly Potter covers a range of emotions, from uncomfortable feelings to happy ones. Perfect for starting conversations, this book includes colourful illustrations, child-friendly strategies and helpful notes for parents.
This beautiful picture book helps young children celebrate uniqueness, difference and diversity and at the same time realise the similarities we all share.
