STAFF LIBRARY: TRANSFORMING EDUCATION

STAFF LIBRARY: SPECIAL NEEDS NEW FOR 2021

Transforming Education Miranda Jefferson and Michael Anderson

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in Schools

A reimagining of how our schools can be sustainably transformed to be places of support, challenge and joy in learning, meeting emergent needs in our workplaces and wider society.

Janice Wearmouth

This book takes a future-oriented approach to re-imagining schools with a focus on four innate human capacities: collaboration, critical reflection, communication and creativity.

An essential and thoroughly updated resource to enable teachers at all levels and others interested in education to understand more about the nature of special educational needs and disability (SEND), and ways to assess and address difficulties in classrooms and elsewhere.

Working away from trends in government policy, Miranda Jefferson and Michael Anderson draw together a diverse range of case studies from around the world, including Australia, Canada, England, Hong Kong, Singapore and the USA, to provide a reimagining of education, showing how our schools can be sustainably transformed to be places of support, challenge and joy in learning, meeting emergent needs in our workplaces and wider society. Readers are guided to see themselves as agents of transformation, empowered to use knowledge and experience to build the reality they would like to see in their school, responding to their questions of diversity, inclusion, and community.

Drawing on her wealth of experience and research, Janice Wearmouth explores a wide range of informal and standardised approaches to assess and address the most common forms of SEND: literacy and numeracy difficulties and behavioural concerns related to social, emotional and mental health. Publishes 16th December 2021 PB • 246 x 199mm • 400pp • 9781350173026 • AU$49.99 NZ$55.00

The Art Teacher's Guide to Exploring Art and Design in the Community

Drawing on an abundance of examples from around the world, including the NYC 2nd Ave Subway, the Detroit’s Heidelberg Project, the Favel Painting Foundation and bicycle rack sculpture, Szekely inspires readers to look beyond the classroom walls to develop meaningful art experiences for students. She shows the myriad art forms, media expressions, and design professions that have the influence and potential to shape the local environment, reaching far beyond the traditional museum and gallery venue.

ISLAND HOPPING What’s the game? In this game, imaginary dangers and physical activity add excitement and help learning. Your child blends spoken sounds into words, and splits spoken words into sounds, preparing them for blending sounds into words for reading and splitting words into sounds for spelling.

How to play

Start at the paper island furthest from the ‘mainland’. Explain to your child that they are stranded and must hop from island to island to reach the safety of the mainland.

2

Tell your child that they must leave a gift at each island before moving on. Say that you have the gifts hidden and they can have them if they guess the names from your sound clues.

3

At the first island, sound out the name of one of the objects in your box, phoneme by phoneme (e.g. ‘p – a – n’). If your child can name the object correctly, give them the object to leave on the ‘island’ and tell them to hop to the next island.

You will need

➡ A few objects with names that are short, simple words (for a list of common short, simple words, see the Word List on page 89).

She also shows that innovative and exciting art lessons don’t need large amounts of funding, transportation or even a museum within the local community. Each chapter includes photographs, talking points and key lesson ideas along with links to further resources.
