APPLE PAY ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW Launched in July of this year Apple Pay is now accepted at more than 250,000 shops including the London Underground. We explain how it works and what you need to do to get started.

CONTACTLESS PAYMENT

HOW SECURE IS IT?

Shoppers are already used to making contactless payments with their debit cards. With Apple Pay you can take this to a new level by leaving your cards at home and making one-touch payments from your phone. Using the near-field communication chip embedded in the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch, compatible card readers will take payment directly from your device. Apple Pay can also be used within apps to make quick and convenient online purchases.

Unlike when you hand your credit or debit card to a cashier or use contactless debit card payments your card number is never visible with Apple Pay. This makes it safer and instead of using your actual card number in a transaction, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the secure element. This means your credit and debit card numbers are never transmitted with payment or shared by Apple with retailers.

If your iPhone is lost or stolen you can suspend Apple Pay or completely wipe the device clean using Find My iPhone.

HOW IT WORKS

Rather than entering a four-digit PIN the Touch ID built into the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus identifies you as the cardholder. There is no need to open an app as the card reader will activate Apple Pay when it is in close proximity. You simply place the phone near the reader and press a finger on the Touch ID to verify the payment. Once payment has been successfully taken the phone will beep and vibrate so you don’t even need to look at the screen to confirm payment. The Apple Watch works in the same way except you need to double click the side button in order to activate the stored cards.

GETTING STARTED

Using the Passbook app in the iPhone, where boarding cards and tickets are normally stored, you can now add credit and debit cards. By following the on-screen prompts within Passbook, cards can be scanned so that numbers are automatically entered. Passbook will change its name to Wallet in the Autumn of 2015 as part of the iOS 9 upgrade.

PAYMENT LIMITS

For the majority of purchases the limit for payments is £30 having risen from £20 on 1st Sept. For retailers who upgrade the software on their POS terminals there will be no limit to the value of a purchase. For example, Pret a Manger has no spending cap in its stores.

PARTICIPATING BANKS AND CARDS

HSBC, American Express, Ulster Bank, Nationwide, NatWest, Santander, MBNA and RBS all support Apple Pay. Meanwhile Bank of Scotland, TSB, Halifax, Lloyds Bank and M&S Bank are all expected to come online later in the year. Barclays, who initially had no plans to sign up, have confirmed the service will be available to their customers at some point in the future.

WHERE IS APPLE PAY ACCEPTED?

All shops that currently support contactless debit card payments will be able to accept Apple Pay. Currently, there are over 250,000 participating retail outlets including many household names.

LONDON UNDERGROUND

Apple Pay can now be used on the London Underground as a contactless form of payment similar to an Oyster card. However, it is important that the phones battery is fully charged before starting the journey to avoid maximum fare penalties. Also, there is the risk of being charged twice if you use two different cards on the same journey. A traveller with an iPhone and Apple Watch could be at risk of being double charged. Early adopters have reported slow verification times using the Touch ID, so whilst Apple Pay provides a payment alternative it may be better to stick with your trusted Oyster card for the time being.

WHAT IF YOU DON’T HAVE AN IPHONE?

If you don’t have an iPhone then don’t despair. Google Wallet has actually been around for sometime in the US but never really took off. It is set for a makeover later this year and will be called Android Pay. In addition, Samsung Pay will make its debut soon and is expected to be a significant challenge to the Apple version.

"NOTTING HILL HAS THE PERFECT BALANCE. YOU HAVE A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBOURHOOD FEEL BUT IT’S ALSO SO CLOSE TO CENTRAL LONDON, WITH STUNNING PARKS, GREAT TRANSPORT AND FASHIONABLE SHOPS."

he cosmopolitan district of Notting Hill in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is famous for many things notably the annual carnival and the film of the same name starring Julia Roberts. It has in recent years grown to be a fashionable area for young people and has a vibrant nightlife with some of the best music bars in London. It quite uniquely possesses a bohemian spirit within a formal and affluent setting. Its close location to the famous Portobello Road Market makes it a highly desirable place to visit for shopping as small shops and stalls selling jewellery, antiques, clothing, art and souvenirs of London line the area.

You can walk to Soho in 20 minutes plus with its own tube station on the Victoria line and an abundance of buses it is very well connected. The area is separated from Belgravia to the north by Victoria Railway Station, and bounded by the River Thames to the south, Vauxhall Bridge Road to the east and the former Grosvenor Canal to the west. THE NIGHT TUBE Launching in September 2015 The Night Tube will support London’s 24-hour lifestyle during Friday and Saturday evenings. London is increasingly a 24-hour city, so Transport For London has invested heavily in the underground network and rolling out a 24-hour service to match. Since 2000, passenger numbers on the Tube have risen by 70% on Friday and Saturday nights. It is expected that the new service will cut night-time journeys by an average of 20 minutes, with some cut by more than one hour. The Night Tube will also secure 2,000 permanent jobs and boost the economy by £360 million. Complementing the existing night bus services, the extended underground times will facilitate travel between Central London and the outskirts of the city.

SERVICE DETAILS The new round-the-clock service will operate on five lines: the Jubilee, Victoria, and most of the Central, Northern and Piccadilly lines. Jubilee and Victoria Lines - trains running on average every 10 minutes across the entire lines Central Line - trains running approximately every 10 minutes between White City and Leytonstone and approximately every 20 minutes between Ealing Broadway to White City and Leytonstone to Loughton/ Hainault Northern Line - trains running on average every 8 minutes between Morden and Camden Town and

approximatively every 15 minutes from Camden Town to High Barnet / Edgware Jubilee and Victoria Lines - trains running on average every 10 minutes across the entire lines Piccadilly Line - trains running on average every 10 minutes between Cockfosters and Heathrow Terminal 5. There are plans to expand the night time service to parts of the Metropolitan, Circle, District, and Hammersmith & City lines once the modernisation programmes are complete.

SAFETY FIRST Transport for London is working to ensure the Tube network remains a safe, low crime environment. There will be an enhanced policing presence during the overnight services. The British Transport Police (BTP) will provide more than 100 officers to patrol the 144 stations that will be open throughout the night each weekend when the Night Tube services begin. More BTP Community Support Officers will also be out on the network to assist passengers, and support police officers, as required. All stations will continue to be staffed by London Underground employees while train services are running, just as they are during the day. Staff will be visible and available to help travellers with any queries.

CASA MALEVO

COCOMAYA

OLD MARY’S

In the heart of Connaught Village, right next to iconic Hyde Park, Casa Malevo is a celebration of Argentine cuisine. The entire wine list is from Argentina, with the majority available by 375ml carafe, allowing guests to sample different wines throughout their meal. They also cater for private dining.

Based in 12 Connaught Street, Cocomaya is the ultimate in cake indulgence. Described as a boutique bakery and chocolate shop, the choice is overwhelming, but please try the cronuts which come in a variety of flavours and are the best outside of New York. Don't forget the chocs to take home.

Hidden beneath the Mitre, Old Mary’s is named after a tragic love story and home to our very own secret speakeasy serving up classic cocktails, craft beers and hot dogs. With live Jazz bands every Thursday night, it’s the perfect place to unwind after work or just chill out with friends.
