AN INTRODUCTION TO CARE 1. INDUCTION COURSE FOR NEW CARE STAFF This course prepares new members of staff for employment in any area of the care sector. It can be delivered in a number of flexible formats: block or day release. The materials and certificates provided underpin the knowledge and evidence which can be used when the carer commences their SVQ.

MOVING & ASSISTING OF PEOPLE After this one day course staff will: • Understand relevant Health and Safety Legislation in relation to individuals, their employment, their employer and colleagues • Practice care of the back and spine and have awareness of how to protect themselves and people using the service from unsafe manoeuvres
3. COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS After this one day course staff will: • Understand the basic human need for communication • Develop insight into the many forms of verbal and non-verbal communication • Investigate what motivates, promotes and prohibits communication • Recognise the importance of cleaning and maintaining sensory aids
• Understand why we implement principles of efficient and effective movement • Understanding risk assessments and why they are required in a care setting • Demonstrate and practice safe moving and assisting of people, including the use of different equipment
5. PERSONAL CARE, PROMOTION OF CONTINENCE & HEALTHY SKIN After this one day course staff will: • Know how to support the individual with personal care:
• Be informed of how to develop active listening skills
• Understand the importance of clear, concise written information

ADULT SUPPORT AND PROTECTION After this one day course staff will: • Have an understanding of the purpose of the Adults With Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 and the benefits to individuals. • Identify the signs and symptoms which may indicate that an adult is being harmed or at risk of harm • Know the actions to take if harm is suspected • Know what is meant by ‘Power of Attorney’ and ‘Guardianship’
9. PROMOTING POSITIVE BEHAVIOURS After this one day course staff will: • Understand the purpose of different behaviours • Know how to promote positive interaction with individuals prior to and during crisis • Be aware of different de-escalation techniques prior to and during crisis • Have considered reflective practice and selfawareness of the staff role in crisis

DE-ESCALATION, BREAKAWAY AND SAFER RESTRAINT FOR CARE WORKERS Following the successful completion of this one day course, participants will be able to: • Recognise and deal with conflict safely and effectively • Refer to current legislation in relation to the terms ‘absolutely necessary’ and ‘reasonable force’ • Identify common principles for safer restraint • Understand what can go wrong when employing restraint techniques • Appreciate the importance of sufficient and appropriate Risk Assessment • Safely employ the principles of de-escalation

3. END OF LIFE CARE This one day course is based on Quality Standards for End of Life Care (NICE 2013). After this one day course staff will: • Be aware of the importance of working with families, carers and individuals during times of crisis • Know how to support individuals who are distressed • Have increased knowledge of the importance of the need to support and manage pain and discomfort • Be aware of the need for effective communication and clear assessment of the individual • Understand the need for a ‘person centred approach’ in order to meet individuals needs in a culturally sensitive and dignified manner • Be aware of the physical, psychological, spiritual and social support required at this time

EPILEPSY AND RESCUE MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION AWARENESS Epilepsy Awareness, after this 1/2 day course staff will: • Have awareness of epilepsy: its causes, diagnosis and treatment • Understand the management and recording of seizures • Describe when a situation becomes an emergency and how to deal with it Rescue Medication Awareness, after this 1/2 day course staff will: • Know the principles of administration of emergency medications • Consider the legal and ethical issues surrounding emergency medications • Practice administration of emergency medications

Following this 1/2 day course, which is based on NHS Scotland Mandatory Induction Standards, participant’s will:
This two day course will give staff insight into:
• Understand the importance of ensuring their fitness for work, and how the risk of cross-infection is reduced by applying high standards of personal hygiene and appropriate dress • Understand and define what is meant by ‘the chain of infection’ • Identify the risks of spillages of blood and other body fluids and understand the procedures for ensuring safe cleaning, disinfecting and removal of spillages from work areas • Understand the importance of correct disposal of (healthcare) waste, including sharps, minimising the risk of acquiring and / or spreading infection • Understand and describe when hand hygiene is required
• Attitudes to mental health issues • The impact of alcohol and drugs on mental health • Suicide prevention and the importance of good listening skills • Understanding depression and how to offer mental health first aid to someone experiencing depression • Understanding anxiety and how to offer first aid to someone experiencing anxiety • Understanding psychosis and how to offer first aid to someone experiencing a psychotic episode The course does not train people to be mental health workers. It offers basic general information about mental health problems. The knowledge and understanding presented in the course helps to remove stigma, fear and encourages confidence in staff when approaching a person in distress.

DEMENTIA AWARENESS After this one day course staff will: • Understand the types and prevalence of Dementia in Scotland • Recognise the common signs and symptoms of dementia and be aware of the stigma surrounding this condition • Recognise the impact on the individual and be able to respond appropriately
7. STRESS MANAGEMENT After this half day course staff will:
• Understand ‘Person Centred Support’ in relation to people with dementia • Understand ‘Risk Enablement’
• Be aware of the causes of stress and the effects on individuals and their families
9. INTENSIVE INTERACTION
• Understand healthy and unhealthy coping strategies that may be used by people dealing with stress
After this course staff will have knowledge of how to successfully spend time and interact with individuals who may be; difficult to reach, with limited communication, who may display stereotypical or self-stimulatory behaviours that excludes the participation of others.
• Have begun to develop reflective practice and identify empowering options available for understanding stress and maintaining control
Staff will understand: • How communication typically develops • What promotes or prohibits communication • The theory that underpins Intensive Interaction • The purpose of self-stimulatory behaviours • How to be proactive in the application of the above

PERCUTANEOUS ENDOSCOPIC GASTROSTOMY (PEG) After this half day course staff will : • Have a knowledge of the function of PEG tubes and why they may be required • Know the anatomy and physiology relevant in this procedure • Understand the benefits, cautions and contraindications of PEG Tubes • Know how to routinely care for the PEG site and equipment • Be aware of the common complications that may occur and how to troubleshoot these • Know how to support the needs of an individual with a PEG tube • Have considered the ethical issues that underpin the use of PEG tubes 14

ORO-PHARYNGEAL SUCTIONING After this half day course staff will: • Have a knowledge of the indications for oro-pharyngeal suctioning • Be familiar with the action and care of a suction machine and catheters • Understand the theory of oro-pharyngeal suctioning • Have demonstrated the use of the equipment during a time of simulated practice
5. ANAPHYLAXIS AND FLU VACCINATION

• Know the anatomy and physiology relevant in venepuncture
• Have revised the immune response of the body
• Be aware of the criteria for choosing the site and device to be used
• Know how to appropriately and safety store the flu vaccines
• Understand potential problems which may be encountered and the necessary intervention
• Review the procedure of flu vaccination • Be equipped to deal with any adverse effects of the flu vaccination inclusive of Basic Life Support
• Know basic universal precautions and the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) that should be adhered to
• Be skilled in the management of a person with an anaphylactic reaction
• Be aware of post venepuncture care and support required
• Through discussion, relate practice to NMC’s professional advice

• Understand the need and importance of accurate records and robust reporting systems • Be aware off bacteria and their characteristics • Know how food poisoning occurs and take preventative measures • Understand the importance of personal hygiene and working habits of the food handler • Know of the impact of design and function of working environments on food safety • Understand the importance of regulated cleaning practices • Be aware of common food pests and their control

3. REHIS INTERMEDIATE FOOD HYGIENE COURSE (20 HOURS) WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? It provides in-depth food hygiene information for food handlers and is particularly relevant for those in a supervisory position. This includes managers, supervisors and team leaders across industries such as manufacturing, catering, care services and retail. The syllabus is set by REHIS (The Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland) and the course ends with a 2 hour written examination which is marked by REHIS. • This course is ideal if you work with food and are responsible for the work of others
• There are no pre-requisites for the intermediate food hygiene qualification. However it is beneficial for you to already have the Elementary food hygiene certificate WHAT WILL I GET OUT OF IT? The aim of the 3.5 day Intermediate Food Safety training course is to make you aware of a supervisor’s responsibilities with regard to food safety. It ensures you are fully up to date with food hygiene legislation, shows you how to compile and implement Food Safety Management Systems, and how to best communicate the required hygiene standards to your team. Successful completion of the course provides you with a nationally recognised Intermediate Food Hygiene qualification.
• It is hugely useful if you’re implementing a safe system for food hygiene in your place of work • Owners and managers in small to medium sized organisations, depending on the type of food business, may find that the Intermediate course provides them with sufficient knowledge to carry out all their responsibilities effectively
