FIGHTING FIT With the dark nights and cold weather of Winter it is tempting to spend your evenings in front of the TV. Instead kick-off those slippers and follow Chard’s guide to staying fit with these top five exercises for the home.

1. STEP-UP For a cardio workout try your own version of step aerobics using a staircase. Set a timer for 15 minutes then step up and down using one foot at a time to form a beat. Once comfortable with this you can create a pattern using more steps and setting your movements to your favourite song. This is a great exercise for toning thighs and strengthening legs.

2. LIFT-IT Working out with weights is a great way to stay in shape. You can tone your back and biceps by using a small set of dumbbells. Clear a space for your outstretched arms to lift and hold in a variety of positions. Rep in short sequences so that your palm meets your shoulder and continue this movement until your arms get tired. One of the best things about weight lifting at home is that you can do this whilst watching the TV.

3.

HAVE A BALL

5.

Abdominal muscles can be toned and worked in a fun way with an exercise ball. There is no real focused routine but by sitting on the ball and bouncing lightly for 20 to 30 minutes your core muscles are being moved, challenged and stretched. Once you are confident using this piece of equipment introduce a series of leg lifts for a more thorough workout.

TIDY UP A proven method for sweating off that excess weight is housework. It is said that an hour and a half of cleaning can burn the same amount of calories as you would from an intense 30 minute session on the treadmill. So cancel that gym membership and instead grab a mop and get busy.

4. PLAY-TIME The weather no longer dictates what kind of exercise you can do indoors. Without having to head outside, many consoles now offer fitness programmes including skiing, boxing and dancing. Not only can they assess your weight, but some of these games can actually recommend a fitness schedule. Involve a group of friends to make this an enjoyable way of staying fit.

he cosmopolitan district of Notting Hill in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is famous for many things notably the annual carnival and the film of the same name starring Julia Roberts. It has in recent years grown to be a fashionable area for young people and has a vibrant nightlife with some of the best music bars in London. It quite uniquely possesses a bohemian spirit within a formal and affluent setting. Its close location to the famous Portobello Road Market makes it a highly desirable place to visit for shopping as small shops and stalls selling jewellery, antiques, clothing, art and souvenirs of London line the area.

THE L&C COMPANY Originally working within the property sales market, best friends Lucy and Claire set up The L&C Company in 2005. With no previous experience, they won a commission to design the interior of a stately home and have been combining their marketing experience with natural design talent and pedantic organisational skills ever since. The L&C Company has now grown into a team of expert designers and professional project managers. They share some of their top interior design tips with Chard.

“IT IS OUR PLEASURE TO PROVIDE BEAUTIFUL HOMES FOR PEOPLE TO VIEW AND LIVE IN.”

PLANNING AHEAD Think about the overall vision for the house before you start. Look at magazines and consider what you like and don’t like and why. This is always worth doing even for one room. Plot the furniture layout for the rooms so you know where existing items are likely to

12 CHARD Autumn 201 1

be placed, this gives a good indication of how much space can be allocated for your new look. We encourage our clients to write down words that describe the desired look and feel. Is it elegant, comfortable, or modern? Do you like sophisticated, angular, smart,

or funky accessories? This produces a written vision for the house and is a road map when choosing or deliberating over individual items or fabrics. This can be particularly useful in settling mismatches of opinion.

PERSONAL TOUCH Our company now has an equal mix of property developers, investors and private clients. To provide a show house that helps to sell houses is really down to understanding the target market. We understand this better than most designers because of our property sales experience and will add to the developers brief by

researching the market and locale before starting out on the design. When working with private clients, our role is to interpret the client’s vision for the house and how they want to live. This is a skill in itself and an important part of ensuring that everyone is delighted with the finished look. Private clients are not always sure exactly what they

want or they find it difficult to explain, and more often than not there is more than one person involved and they don’t completely agree on everything. A home should be a reflection of all its residents and this is where a clear vision at the outset is so important.

BUY LOTS OF WARM THROWS – FOLD THEM NICELY OR HANG THEM OVER A CHAIR TO PROVIDE THE PERFECT COMFORTER WHEN READING A GOOD BOOK OR WATCHING TV.

Harcourt Mirror £169 www.okadirect.com

BUY CANDLES WITH WINTERY SCENTS, OR EVEN CHOOSE A SEASONAL PLUG-IN WHICH CAN BE REALLY EFFECTIVE IF YOU FIND THE RIGHT FRAGRANCE.

SETTING THE MOOD LIGHTING IS INTEGRAL TO CREATING WARMTH AND AMBIENCE If you have ceiling lights put them on a dimmer so you can control the lighting. When you are creating a furniture layout consider where table lamps or floor lamps will go. Where space allows, bedrooms should have two bedside tables and lamps on each, if no wall lights. Kitchens are often overlooked as a place to create good lighting. Seating in a kitchen, like an armchair or sofa is a real pleasure and a lamp or two on the kitchen work surface can easily turn a working kitchen into a beautiful dining room, reading area or a place to sit comfortably in the evening. COLOUR PALETTE When creating design schemes we start with a ‘header’; this is the item that everything else hangs from and is built around. From here it is possible to choose the correct colour scheme for the room by matching it against this focal point. Whilst it’s important to consider how much natural light a room has it doesn’t always follow to put light colours into dark rooms. Sometimes it is better to work with nature, so in a room with little natural light choose darker paint and wallpapers to create a really mellow, moody look. In small rooms in particular the use of mirrors can add depth and reflect the light to create the illusion of space. But, whatever your colour passion L&C can seamlessly perfect your look of choice. A carefully selected range of books await discovery at this charming bookshop. Slightly Foxed is a second hand store and a welcoming place to while away a couple of hours reading passages, running your fingers across the shelves and getting lost within pages. The staff are a particular asset and can look up rare editions and help to find a book to suit all tastes.

Girl Meets Dress is a fashion concept brought about by the conundrum many women face on the run up to a special event: what should I wear? Instead of purchasing a rather grand item that will live its remaining days in the back of the wardrobe, try this lovely store, which hires out big name eveningwear. Appointments must be booked in advance.

Designer Selina Blow works in association with Lulu Guinness to bring to South Kensington this varied collection of high fashion including both women and men’s wear. Having held exhibitions at the V&A and The Met in New York, Blow’s fashion is considered as much a work of art as it is clothing.

TAILORED TRENDS Over the next few months fashion is dominated by the elegance of the forties. The fashion of the forties is an exuberant mix of glamour, luxury and grace. The trend possesses an enduring appeal that with a careful selection of clothing can boast a timeless quality. Investing in a tailored ensemble is a good starting off point; from here the look can be dressed up with a delicate blouse for an evening on the town and more informal with some flat shoes for those casual brunches. A pencil skirt can radically transform your outfit from respectable office attire to cocktail hour by introducing a pair of heels and a long overcoat offers a dramatic addition to any wardrobe. Pair accessories including thin leather bow belts and driving gloves for a delicate touch of femininity.
