Welcome to Chard’s first property and lifestyle magazine of 2013. Three years into our magazine’s life we Spring / Summer 2013
have had great feedback from local residents and we believe that this edition will continue to please. As we come into spring, and what we hope will be a brighter summer than last, we focus on London’s natural beauty and its parks. Where else can you enjoy a picnic and relax whilst being surrounded by some of the world’s most renowned architecture? Other sections of the magazine focus on British traditions and we take a look at the best local places for a coffee or a cocktail. There is something in here for everyone; we hope you enjoy the read. TIPS FOR CYCLING SAFELY IN LONDON
1. Keep an eye out for traffic. Cars
BARCLAYS CYCLE SUPERHIGHWAYS
LONDON CYCLE HIRE SCHEME
CYCLE TOURS OF LONDON
You may have noticed the blue cycle lanes that have recently appeared on the cities roads marked CS2, CS3, CS7 and CS8. This is the beginning of a new cycle superhighway network running from outer London into the city centre. The network provides a safer, faster and more direct route into the city and could be your best and quickest way to get to work. Four have launched, with a further eight to be introduced by 2015. www.tfl.gov.uk
If you are new to cycling you could dip your toe in the water with the London Cycle Hire Scheme. The scheme provides specially designed bikes, which can be hired from docking stations throughout the city. With hundreds of docking stations available you can take a bike, ride it where you like, then drop off at the nearest station. The scheme is well suited for shorter commuting, sightseeing and getting around town. www.tfl.gov.uk
If a guided bike ride appeals to you then Cycle Tours of London have two tours available - Sights of London and The East End Tour. Taking in key London sights the tours avoid all busy, polluted roads and make the most of the guides' knowledge of river paths, cycle lanes, alleys and park routes. Tours last either 3.25 or 3.5 hours and take place every day at 10.30am and 2.30pm all year round. www.biketoursoflondon.com
don’t always signal so never assume their intention at junctions. Lorries and buses struggle to see bikes, so be extra wary and don’t undertake. Motorcycles can appear from the smallest gaps so be cautious when crossing a gap.
2. Get into the habit of using your arms for signalling. Cars are fearful of bikes particularly when their intentions are not clear.
3. Obey all traffic signs and signals. There are many myths about what cyclists can get away with. The fact is that you need to follow all traffic instructions without exception. For example you can only ride in a bus lane if the road signs say so.
4. Don’t take your bike on the tube except for surface and subsurface trains outside of peak hours. Although folding bikes are allowed on all parts of the tube at all times.
5. Invest in a lock and use it when parked – also register your bike with the police at www.bikeregister.com

SOPHIE DAVIES LOCAL RESIDENT he cosmopolitan district of Notting Hill in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is famous for many things notably the annual carnival and the film of the same name starring Julia Roberts. It has in recent years grown to be a fashionable area for young people and has a vibrant nightlife with some of the best music bars in London. It quite uniquely possesses a bohemian spirit within a formal and affluent setting. Its close location to the famous Portobello Road Market makes it a highly desirable place to visit for shopping as small shops and stalls selling jewellery, antiques, clothing, art and souvenirs of London line the area.

A GREAT BRITISH TRADITION
Afternoon Tea is a quintessentially English tradition that we have enjoyed for more than 150 years. We look at its origins, how it has developed over time and some of London’s most sought after venues for this much loved culinary event.
HISTORY Afternoon tea also known as low tea is a small snack usually eaten mid-late afternoon. The custom dates back to the 1840s when it was adopted by the wealthy classes in England. Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Bedford is thought to have started the tradition when she visited Belvoir Castle. With dinner not being served until 7pm she felt the mid-afternoon snack provided the perfect balance. She turned this into a social occasion by inviting friends for tea, sandwiches and cakes and the word soon spread from there.
TRADITIONAL MENU The Afternoon Tea menu has developed over the years to include a selection of sandwiches and a variety of sweet items. A typical menu might read: • A selection of freshly prepared finger sandwiches • Warm scones with clotted cream and preserves • A variety of home made cakes and pastries • Your choice from a range of teas What types of sandwiches are served with Afternoon Tea? The classic selection of sandwiches served with Afternoon Tea includes: • cucumber; • egg mayonnaise with cress; • smoked salmon with cream cheese; • coronation chicken; • ham and mustard. 12 CHARD Spr ing/Summe r 2 0 1 3

ayswater borders the north of Hyde Park over Kensington Gardens and is therefore a picturesque district and a popular spot for those touring the city. Bayswater Tube Station is the gateway for many visitors to this borough. From here a multitude of cafés, bars and restaurants can be found. This is also the most densely populated area for hotels with many of the striking stucco terraces providing tourist accommodation. A diverse community gives the place a cosmopolitan edge whilst its proximity to the Marble Arch and St Sophia’s Cathedral provides a hint of its historic past.
