Brand identity creates a talking point WHEN WILLIAM TRACEY RECENTLY DEVELOPED A NEW BRAND IDENTITY IT BECAME SOMETHING OF A STANDING JOKE THAT THE EPM PARTNER WALL WAS STILL DISPLAYING THE OLD LOGO – NOT ANYMORE! [PARTNERS]

A

t the EPM office we are delighted to feature all of our important partners including customers, suppliers, associates and stakeholders on the partner wall. The wall is made up of A3 boards each displaying the relevant partner logo serving to reinforce our important business relationships. Of course nothing stands still for long which means more often than not brand identities and logos are updated. So, following a recent review of the William

Tracey brand it become something of a talking point prior to EPM site meetings that the logo was in fact the old one. So, during a recent visit to the William Tracey plant in Paisley Gary Kerr, Managing Director of EPM was presented with the correct logo. Graeme McDonald, Managing Director of the William Tracey Industrial & Utilities Division were delighted to present the logo ready for display on the EPM wall

for partner logos. Commenting on the story Gary said, “it’s been a bit of a talking point lately that we had the old logo on the wall and we are pleased that this has now been rectified. William Tracey are an important partner to us in a number ways. We help them with engineering support across their Industrial and Utilities Division, whilst they support our environmental policy in that they handle all of our recycled office waste.”

A new International Standard for Asset Management ISO 55000 (THE NEW INTERNATIONAL STANDARD FOR ASSET MANAGEMENT) EMERGING FROM PAS 55 SUCCESSES [INSTITUTE OF ASSET MANAGEMENT]

P

AS 55 (the British Standard’s requirements specification for the optimal management of physical assets) is being used as the basis by the International Standards Organization (ISO), for the first ever International Standard for Asset Management. This will be published in 3 parts: • ISO 55000 will provide the overview, concepts and terminology in Asset Management • ISO 55001 will specify the requirements for good Asset Management practices - the ‘Asset Management System’ (NB this is not a specification for an asset information management system, such

as an EAM or CMMS software tool) • ISO 55002 provides interpretation and implementation guidance for such an Asset Management System. The ISO 5500x family of standards will also align and integrate with other major management systems specifications, so that an integrated approach can be established for good practices on all key aspects of professional operations. These include ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environmental management, OHSAS 18000 for occupational health and safety, and ISO 31000 for risk management.

COMMON SENSE, COMMON SAFETY THE UK GOVERNMENT’S RECENT REPORT INTO HEALTH AND SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE HAS BEEN CRITICISED FOR ITS UNFOCUSED APPROACH TO EMPLOYEES. [HEALTH & SAFETY]

O

n 15th October 2011 Lord Young of Graffham published the ‘Common Sense, Common Safety’ report. Argument stirred regarding its relevancy to plant engineers. While it recommends the set-up of a register of professionally qualified occupational safety consultants and suggests simplifying the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), the list of recommendations has been criticised for concerning itself too broadly with the compensation culture grown from poorly established legislature as opposed to dealing with the day-to-day operations of employees. Arguably the remit for the report was addressed, as it was asked to outline guideline policies for improving the perception of health and safety, ensuring it’s taken seriously and minimising the compliance burden on small companies with low-risk workplaces. Yet criticism has been found when comparing these new policies to the statistics released by HSE, which have presented a greater need for health and safety around

maintenance operations. Findings show that 158 employees per 100,000 suffer a major injury or are killed as a result of manufacturing, which is 50% more than the all-industry average. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) launched its Europe-wide safe maintenance campaign earlier this year showing that 20% of workplace accidents are connected to maintenance operations. Across Europe it states that around 10-15% of all fatal accidents at work are related to maintenance whilst the number is close to 30% in the British manufacturing industry. Companies are being urged to continue to protect their employees through safe practice in the workplace. Part of this is about raising awareness of risks and potential problems and enforcing rules around this. HSE has put together a safe maintenance health-check questionnaire, available on their website, which challenges employees and site managers to act on any oversights.

HSE Health Check Challenge • Do your staff always isolate machines before undergoing maintenance? • Have all your maintenance staff got their own isolation padlocks and warning boards? • Do you know if you have got asbestos in the building and if so, where it is? • Do you use this asbestos information when planning building maintenance jobs? • Do you think in advance about what access equipment is right for the job? • Do your staff talk through proper lifting procedures prior to lifting heavy loads? • Are any of the staff competent enough to take charge of nonstandard lifting jobs? • Do you use permits to work properly when needed? • Do you have any confined spaces?
