CAFÉ OTO

OF THE BEST MUSIC VENUES IN LONDON With such a wide and varied selection of live music venues across the city of London, it’s sometimes good to get a recommendation. Fletchers’ considers ten of the best.

Café OTO opened in April 2008 with the aim of providing a home for creative new music that exists outside of the mainstream. Café OTO is made up of one large café/ performance space, which is open during the day as a café whilst hosting an evening programme of adventurous live music almost seven nights a week. 18 - 22 Ashwin Street, Dalston, London E8 3DL www.cafeoto.co.uk

BARBICAN This is a top venue for world music heavyweights – the Barbican’s stately main concert hall is the place to catch big band set-ups, which included the Syd Barret Tribute Show in 2007. It has showcased Sufi music and a mashup of Afrobeat legends with South American electronicists. The Barbican is also home to the London Symphony Orchestra. Barbican Centre, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS www.barbican.org.uk

THE VORTEX If Jazz is your thing then The Vortex comes highly recommended. It is consistently selected as one of the top 150 jazz clubs in the world by Downbeat magazine. The club has developed a strong profile on London's improv jazz scene and is now well known for its innovative programming. The Vortex provides a platform for both emerging and established talent in the jazz, experimental and contemporary music scene. 11 Gillett Square, London N16 8AZ www.vortexjazz.co.uk

ROYAL ALBERT HALL The Royal Albert Hall was built in 1871 to fulfil the vision of Prince Albert (Queen Victoria's consort) for a ‘Central Hall’ that could be used to promote the arts and sciences. A Grade I listed building the venue is today synonymous with the last night of the Proms. As well as

outstanding acoustics the hall has an amazing atmosphere and an effortless elegance, making it a hugely popular music venue with the British public. Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AP www.royalalberthall.com

BUSH HALL Originally built in 1904 and used as a dance hall through the roaring twenties, the venue has gone from being a soup kitchen in WWII to a bingo hall and rehearsal space for the likes of The Who, Adam Faith and Cliff Richard in the late 50's early 60’s. Today, Bush Hall’s unique character and incredible acoustics makes it the perfect venue for everything from live music gigs to cabaret shows. 310 Uxbridge Road, London W12 7LJ www.bushhallmusic.co.uk

MADAME JOJO’S With a pedigree dating back to the 1940s Madame JoJo’s is home to many world-famous club nights, such as Electrogogo, Deep Funk, Groove Sanctuary and White Heat. New visitors invariably fall in love with its unique atmosphere, finding it the perfect place to enjoy an eclectic range of musical genres and live bands. The plush decadence, saucy 50’s glamour and vintage art deco styling creates a warm and intimate atmosphere. 8-10 Brewer St, Soho, London, W1F OSE www.madamejojos.com

THE LEXINGTON The Lexington brings together a mix of riotous rock 'n' roll upstairs and a ground floor lounge that will entice and seduce you with a slow burning glow of downbeat decadence and bluesy class. It’s the heart of Saturday night as well as an intimate place to grab a bite to eat where you can kick back to a hand-picked soundtrack of rock 'n' roll, southern-fried soul and speakeasy Americana.

KOKO KOKO began life as the Camden Theatre in 1900 and over the years played host to Charlie Chaplin, The Rolling Stones, The Clash and Madonna. Despite a major refit and name change from Camden Palace to KOKO in 2004, it retains its Indie/alternative pop/rock remit, whilst also embracing everything from hip hop to trance. Over the last decade some true musical legends have graced KOKO's stage including Coldplay, Madonna and Elton John. 1a Camden High St, London NW1 7JE www.koko.uk.com

UNION CHAPEL This Grade I listed church in Islington (built in 1877) has this year been voted Time Out live venue of the year and has become a popular venue for intimate concerts. Remarkably it is still a working church and help centre for London’s homeless. With a breathtaking gothic interior, octagonalshaped chapel, exposed stone walls and wraparound balconies, it is recognised for its quality of sound and pin-drop acoustics. Compton Terrace, N1 2UN www.unionchapel.org.uk

THE TABERNACLE Situated in a leafy Notting Hill street, The Tabernacle is one of London’s most beautiful and intimate spaces for viewing live music. It is a hugely versatile venue that in the 60’s and 70’s hosted Pink Floyd and The Clash; recent performers have included Lily Allen and Adele. The theatre is open daily and includes a dance studio, art gallery, meeting rooms and a conservatory with garden. 35 Powis Square, London W11 2AY www.tabernaclew11.com

BATTERSEA POWER STATION

With the restoration of this famous Grade II* listed building starting in October 2013 we explore the power stations history and the ambitious development plans for the future.

£8 BILLION INVESTMENT VALUE HISTORY Battersea Power Station is one of the largest brick buildings in Europe with a footprint of just over 6 acres. Construction of the steel frame commenced in 1929 with Battersea A completed in 1935 and Battersea B, despite the war, coming into service in 1944 with the fourth chimney completed in 1955. In 1940 RAF pilots used the plumes of white vapour from the chimneys to guide them home in the mist. The Luftwaffe also used the plumes for navigation, which explains why the Power Station avoided extensive bombing. At its height the total generating capacity was 509MW with Battersea producing 20% of London’s power (equivalent to half the output of a modern nuclear power plant) belching out 500 tonnes of Co2 per hour. A fire at the power station on April 20, 1964 caused power failures throughout London and as a result delayed the launch of BBC2 until the following day. Battersea A ceased generation after 42 years production in 1975 with Battersea B ceasing operation in 1983.

14 FL E TC HERS Autumn/ W i nte r 20 1 3

THE POWER STATION HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS A LONDON LANDMARK TO RIVAL ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL.

FACTS & FIGURES

THE VISION This vast former industrial site will be transformed into a community of 3,500 homes, generate 15,000 new jobs, 50,342 Sq m of retail space, cultural facilities, conference spaces, offices, a new 6 acre riverside park, library, medical centre, childcare facilities and 400m of new riverside walkway. Over the next few years it is set to become one of the largest redevelopment projects in London and certainly unique with its prominent waterside location. The first phase of construction works has already been awarded and follows a sales launch at which 75% of properties sold in the first week. As well as being home to the new US Embassy, Battersea Power Station will have its own underground station, served by an extension to the existing Northern Line.

OTHER PHASES There are seven phases in total and Phase Two, which includes the restoration of the Grade II* listed Power Station begins in October 2013 In the words of Prime Minister David Cameron, Battersea Power Station is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Nine Elms regeneration zone. This is certainly an ambitious and exciting project for central London and we will watch with great anticipation and interest as the development takes shape over the coming months and years.
