Getting dressed up for the occasion
In the heart of historic Oxford, where beautiful buildings house great seats of learning, young people celebrated with a May Ball
Annual May Balls in Oxford may be something of a tradition but at Somerville College, where great names such as Margaret Thatcher, Indira Ghandi and Iris Murdoch studied, this year’s event had a distinctly contemporary touch. The event took place on Saturday, May 4, and was based around a theme of “The Last Night on Earth.” Attended by students, alumni and their guests, it was held in the grounds of the Oxford college, with activities taking place in the quad and the main buildings. The end of a great night
Victorian Boat Swings
Apocalyptic fireworks, actors in masks, a maze of nightmares, a light show, and a fire and ice decorative theme all created an ambience of destruction. Yet decadence and glamour were also in abundance with catering by a gourmet hog roast company and Raymond Blanc; guests also enjoyed champagne and cocktail bars, as well as a shisha tent. The music provided the highlight for most people, with DJ sets from big names like High Contrast, and live sets from bands, including Cancun Kid. Above all, the guests seemed to enjoy the quirky touches – the Victorian boat swings, the colourful ball pool, or the room full of hundreds of white balloons, suspended from the ceiling by threads.
