Africa Fashion Show Geneva 2014 CRUCIBLE EVENTS AND PLANNERS PRESENTS: AFRICA FASHION SHOW GENEVA | 2ND EDITION

Introduction

AFRICA FASHION SHOW GENEVA The Africa Fashion Show Geneva (AFSG) is the annual flagship event organized by Crucible Events & Planners, a Geneva-based event planning group specializing in public relations and tailored events. AFSG is an independent venture that aims to tell a different story about Africa to the global community. Africa is a beautiful, vibrant and dynamic continent with brilliant and creative minds and goes beyond the usual stereotypes of conflict, diseases, hunger and poverty often recorded in the media. The mission of the African Fashion Show Geneva is not only to promote cultural exchange and encourage a positive narrative about Africa. We also want to take advantage of the power of innovative, creative solutions – including fashion, music and dance – to boost economic development. The show reflects the vitality of the creative human spirit and showcases the diverse talents of African fashion designers and models from all corners of the continent. AFSG is a unique opportunity to connect with the richness of African textiles, ethos and origins.

“Joining forces with civil society and private sector, including non-traditional players, like the fashion industry, has become indispensable. Sustainable development is my top priority” - Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General The Africa Fashion Show Geneva (AFSG) 2014 presented its second colourful array of African fashion and talent at the Château de Penthes on 30 May 2014. Subsequent to a resounding success of our debut event in 2012; again, we successfully showcased Africa’s artistic diversity, audaciousness and creativity with styles and colours reflecting traditions from the North to the South of the continent. A cultural métissage of fashions by Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian designers were also featured. The spectators appreciated the novelty of the fashion show, and luxurious gala dinner held at the Madarin Hotel on the Quai de Seujet on 31 May 2014. In particular, their exposure to an exquisite array of African culinary delights and a pleasant taste of African fine arts, and luxury fashion shown by elegant volunteers, some of whom are aspiring model trainees from the modelling institute Annie-Michel in Geneva. These fashion debutantes and their youthful enthusiasm reflect the very values that AFSG seek to articulate about Africa. The accent was placed on Africa as a nascent cultural and economic hub. The audience also had the opportunity to circulate among la bonne société Africaine à Genève against the posh settings of the Château

de Penthes. Marked by its “African village” character, during the intermission, numerous artisans and creators displayed an array of African-made fashion, jewellery, cosmetics and toiletry products to the immense pleasure of the invitees. The pleasure continued with performances by Cameroonian and Nigerian artists who also delighted the audience with music and fables. A small troop of young dancers from Geneva provided the audience with yet a further demonstration of African diversity and its anchor within diaspora African communities in Europe. The three dancers, all representing African assimilation abroad confirmed the communities’ engagement to keep African culture alive and thriving through education and artistic expression. Together, let us tell positive stories about Africa!

MANYEYO “Manyeyo” represents an unconquerable spirit in my native Ada tongue. The brand sparks a quiet revolution amongst women folk who are imbued with a spirit of great pride. Today’s pieces are a creative blend of African Batik and polished cotton; the end result, an array of luxury designs which are more formal and timeless.

“Mayeyo” représente un esprit indomptable dans sa langue natale “Ada”. La marque suscite une révolution tranquille parmi les femmes imprégnées d’un esprit de grande fierté. Les pièces d’aujourd’hui sont un mélange créatif de Batik africain et de coton ciré; le résultat final, une gamme de modèles de luxe qui sont plus moderne et intemporel.

A LA POINTE DU CAFTAN Each caftan of this collection bears the name of a flower. We want the woman who will wear one of our creations to feel special, beautiful and dainty. Our mothers, sisters and aunts in their sumptuous draped caftans looked like flowers and that had marked us. This collection pays tribute to those wonderful women who have been more than an inspiration.
