RACCONTI IDM ALUMNI NETWORK
6
Stay connected! The IDM alumni network was conceived as a platform for participants of past RACCONTI programs to exchange experiences, present new projects, share news and stay connected - not only amongst themselves but also to IDM. Through regularly scheduled networking meetings, the writers also have the opportunity to meet other RACCONTI alumni and the program’s partners in person. The RACCONTI alumni may thus continue growing and learning in a steady manner, through high quality, exclusive training opportunities offered on an annual basis. Past alumni events were held in Rome and during the Munich film festival, with masterclasses on a wide range of topics and by highly qualified speakers such as Emma Frost. They also offered the possibility to meet and connect with a diverse selection of producers from both the Italian and German speaking markets.

ABOUT RACCONTI
8
Refine your skills, find your peers, build your network, write your story. RACCONTI. RACCONTI is a script development program, aimed specifically at screenwriters working in the Italian and German-speaking markets and run by IDM Südtirol – Alto Adige, the regional film fund of South Tyrol. Its flagship is the RACCONTI | IDM Script Lab where professional screenwriters develop projects and refine their skills with the help of international experts and in creative collaboration with colleagues from other countries. This cross-cultural aspect is as essential to the program as the challenge we set ourselves: to improve storytelling by continuously exploring new frontiers. Over the course of the six years since its inception RACCONTI has adapted to commercial trends and shifted from the development of feature and TV films to TV series. Whether in individual mentoring sessions or in writers’ rooms, our authors collaborate with production companies from Italy and Germany and under the guidance of consultants from all over the world. Each program consists of two week-long workshops, held in South Tyrol, and a phase of individual work, accompanied by Skype consultations. During the workshops, the focus is on the practical development of a concept. However, masterclasses with prominent screenwriters, showrunners, commissioning editors and producers provide valuable insights into the craft of writing and the tricks of the trade. Within the time span of six months a project usually develops from a core idea into a marketable treatment or concept and the writers present their results to the industry at exclusive events in Italy and Germany. We aim to train and bring together talents who want to create stories beyond the confines of their national markets, while also keeping our roots in mind. Therefore two new branches of the program have been set up, aimed especially at local writers: the RACCONTI Local Talent | IDM Mentoring Program and the RACCONTI Local Plus | IDM Short Film Program share the same mission as the flagship program but with the specific goal of helping talented local writers to break into the industry.

The current edition of the IDM Script Lab is all about “TV of Tomorrow”: This time, writers have the opportunity to apply for two different sections of the program, which both have the same goal: to create an outstanding TV series concept with a courageous, new approach and the help of international experts. The Writers’ Room, in cooperation with the production company FFP New Media, takes the tested method to the next level. For the first time five writers, guided by headwriter Christian Jeltsch, will develop a TV series with an additional cross-platform narrative. British transmedia expert David Varela (Sherlock) will consult the team. In the Mentoring-section writers submit their proposals for a TV series to be considered by a high profile jury of European experts. There are no restrictions in terms of genre, format or location, but there is one challenge: We are looking specifically for ideas that are “high concepts” and can brought to life as a “low budget” production. The selected writers will be guided through the development process by British story consultant John Yorke (The Missing). In addition, two producers will mentor the projects from a strategic point of view: Israeli producer Maria Feldman (False Flag) and French producer Harold Valentin (Dix Pour Cent). Highlight of this edition: The jury will reconvene at the end of the program and choose which project to award with the “Panalight Südtirol Development Award”.

RACCONTI LOCAL TALENT #2
32
The first edition of RACCONTI Local Talent was the first initiative to explicitly seek out writing talent from South Tyrol, asking local writers to submit a concept for a feature film. RACCONTI Local Talent #2 continues this path by offering two local writers the possibility to team up with an experienced screenwriter for a personal mentoring. During a custom-tailored mentorship experience, two authors developed their original concepts with the help of international experts. Under this professional guidance their film concepts will be able to blossom into convincing treatments which will then be presented to potential producers. While the program is targeted exclusively for local screenwriters, the projects don’t need to have any relation to South Tyrol.

The film funding department of IDM has served as a financial backer and service partner for film productions since 2010. The stated goal is to raise South Tyrol’s profile as a film location and to support funding for film projects that are realized wholly or partly in South Tyrol. The focus of the film funding is mainly economic. The instrument of film funding is designed to encourage investments in the province that contribute to the development and strengthening of the film infrastructure. Due to the geographical location of the province and the attendant bilingualism, IDM looks beyond borders as a matter of course and seeks to create an interface between the three film markets of Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. IDM thus places special focus on promoting co-productions between these countries. In addition, IDM tries to encourage and strengthen professional exchange and mutual understanding of prevailing production and financing conditions.
