Gallagher is a privately owned company situated in Maidstone. The company was initially set up over 40 years ago by Pat Gallagher, starting out as a civil engineering and ground-works contracting company. Over the years the business has expanded significantly, building a reputation for getting the job done well and on-time. Today the business offers services within the Civil Engineering, Building and Property sectors as well as Aggregates. Pat’s relationship with Blue London Director Eugene Donnelly and new Managing Director Iain Herity goes back to the early 90’s with many crushers and screeners being supplied to the Gallagher Group over subsequent years.

Gallagher operates two quarries in Kent, Hermitage and Blaise Farm. Both quarries supply customers throughout the South East with Kentish ragstone products (a hard limestone). Hermitage Quarry supplies over 70 different products including primary aggregates, recycled aggregates, ready mix concrete, soils and Kentish ragstone block stone for new build and heritage projects. In addition, Hermitage Quarry operates an inert landfill site. Blaise Farm Quarry produces a suite of fills and roadstones for various sectors. Two years ago Gallagher’s were granted approval for a substantial expansion to the quarry which will add another 30 years to production at current rates.
The monster sized 155 tonne MDS M820 trommel is capable of an astonishing throughput of 750 tonnes per hour
The ultra-heavy duty MDS trommels have been brought in to work at the Hermitage site, separating difficult and very sticky material, with the sale being well supported by Liam Murray and Stuart Hamilton of MDS who made a number of visits to the quarry to ensure the machines were working efficiently while on demo.

Riders navigated under the boom of the Fuchs MHL350E through the highly challenging track piled high with railway carriages, shipping containers and scrapped cars

Scrap yard motocross champion Blue Fuchs gets to grips at the latest Red Bull Breakers event Blue Fuchs recently teamed up with CF Booth Scrap Recycling to get a little unusual publicity at the Red Bull Breakers Motocross event, which took place at CF Booth’s facility in Rotherham. The event was the brainchild of two-time British Motocross champion Elliott BanksBrowne, and brought 16 of the UK’s best motocross riders together in the gritty, tough surroundings to battle head-to-head for Motocross Supremacy. Red Bull and Elliott Banks-Browne approached CF Booth several months ago with their idea of holding an event in a scrap yard and to discuss potential obstacles that could be used. It was at this point that the team at CF Booth proposed using one of their many TEREX Fuchs Scrap Handlers, bought from Blue Fuchs over the course of the last few years. They finally opted for an MHL350E model with drivers having to navigate under the boom of the machine. The course also required drivers to navigate railway carriages, shipping containers and piles of scrapped cars which were all used to create a highly challenging track. In the end it was a tightly fought event with Elliott Banks-Browne himself making it to the final against Jamie Law. Elliott took the ultimate prize after finishing ahead by just two bike lengths.

Scaling it up
at the London Lord Mayor’s maritime themed Show The Blue Group team and a sea monster Fuchs MHL250 material handler, alongside a special bike that Blue Group donated to the charity Blood Bikes, took part in the parade.
A rainy November 14th 2015 saw the 800th London Lord Mayor’s Show, with the event incredibly dating back to 1215.
When it all began... London, even back then, was already the largest city north of the Alps, a bustling, rich location of 15,000 residents who were well connected but often hard to govern. During the Shows inaugural year, King John was in trouble. He was retreating into France, running out of money and losing control of his Barons. Discontent was turning into open revolt and the King was very short of allies. To help keep order in the capital The King was persuaded to issue a Royal Charter that allowed the City to elect its own Mayor. It is presumed that he gave his blessing to the commune in order to keep the City on his side, but there was one important condition. Every year the newly elected Mayor must leave the safety of the City, travel upriver to the small town of Westminster and swear loyalty to the Crown. The Lord Mayor has now made that journey for 800 years, despite plagues and fires and countless wars, and pledged his (and her) loyalty to 34 kings and queens of England. The Mayor was a power equal to any of King John’s unruly Barons, and only two months later, the first elected Mayor would put his signature to the Magna Carta. For the next few hundred years, the Lord Mayor of London was by far the grandest position to which a commoner could aspire, and
8

the Mayor’s journey was the celebrity spectacle of its day. Over the centuries it grew so splendid and so popular that by the 16th century it was known everywhere as the Lord Mayor’s Show. It features in the plays of Shakespeare, the diaries of Pepys and the adventures of James Bond and of course in the pantomime story of Dick Whittington, who really was the Mayor of London three times. In the 20th century the Lord Mayor’s Show was the first outside event ever to be broadcast live.
Back to 2015... These days the parade is more of a celebration than a show of loyalty with more than 7,000 people, 200 horses and 155 floats taking part in this year’s event. One of those floats was a Blue Fuchs MHL250 material handler, converted into a sea monster, due to the ‘Maritime Theme’ of this year’s show. To achieve the look, the Fuchs machine underwent a scaly Vinyl wrap makeover and had its grab converted into a set of jaws. The work was completed by Dave Thresher and the rest of the team at Fuchs who did an amazing job which ultimately ended up wowing the crowds that lined the streets during the parade. Pat James, Key Account Manager at Blue Fuchs, had the job of driving the monster through the streets and did very well to keep the beast under control along the exceptionally busy route. Driving alongside the Fuchs machine was a ‘Blood Bike’ which had been kindly donated by Terex Fuchs. Blood Bikes is a charitable
The donated bike was driven by Blue Group Director, Eugene Donnelly, who, along with fellow director Brian Maxwell are volunteer riders for the charity, Blood Bikes.
organisation established by local volunteers to deliver essential blood and urgent medical supplies, out of hours, between hospitals, healthcare sites and laboratories across the UK. So the purchase of the £5,000 bike by Ron de Vries and the team at Fuchs will no doubt help to save lives. The bike was driven along the route by Blue Group Director, Eugene Donnelly, who, along with fellow director Brian Maxwell are also volunteer riders for the charity. Brian and Eugene’s families are close personal friends of the outgoing Lord Mayor, Alan Yarrow and his wife Gilly with their boys Max and Guy, so it meant a lot to The Directors to raise money for Blood Bikes as well as the Lord Mayor’s Charity, Mencap, which is supported by the whole event. The team at Blue London were out in earnest, supported not only by staff from across The Group but also their loyal customers. Gary Short and his daughter Jordon from the Shorts Group in Ascot, as well as Cecil Wiggins from the Wiggins Group, based in Slough took time out of their busy schedules to walk with us, even in the pouring rain, which was much appreciated and clearly demonstrates their relationship with Eugene and the guys at London. Gary has been a Blue customer for over 20 years and Cecil bought the first ever machine from Powerscreen Equipment, later branded Blue London, in 1993. Despite the weather, the crowds turned out in their droves to cheer on all the participants. Blue was even mentioned on the BBC with the sea monster making her debut on the small screen to millions of viewers.

Biggest Ever Plant for BlueMAC Designed and built for Irish Waste in Carryduff, Belfast BlueMAC’s largest plant to date, designed and built for Irish Waste, has recently started to process waste. Established in 1969 by Gerry McPolin Irish Waste initially focused on waste management in the form of skips as well as offering liquid waste services to its customers. The company however soon evolved, working closely with local councils to deal with sewage, ultimately resulting in the business taking on the contract to transfer sewage onto ships for discharge out to sea. Once the government introduced legislation in 1996 to cease sewage disposal via this method, the company began to offer alternative, more environmentally responsible solutions, including centrifuging, producing solid cakes and land spreading. From there the specialisms offered by Irish Waste have increased, with the business now offering diverse services from hazardous
12
liquid waste removal and treatment through to solving the smallest of problems for example with a clients blocked sink in the company’s drainage division. All of this has been significantly supported by the ongoing financial investment strategy that the company has undertaken to ensure that it remains at the forefront of the industry by providing the most cost effective solutions for its customers. Furthermore the services expand not only across Northern and Southern Ireland but also across the water in Scotland and Northern England.

A key objective of current Managing Director, Jason McPolin - son of Gerry - is to offer a comprehensive range of services to their customers, ensuring the business can supply the complete package, whatever their waste requirements. In order to achieve this, there was a noticeable requirement to build a MRF plant in order to reduce landfill volumes generated via the skip waste element of the business. BlueMAC were up against three competitors to gain the contract but eventually came out on top.
BlueMAC have achieved the following accreditations for quality, health and safety and environmental management.
Clearly we made the right decision. The after-sales care from Blue really has been outstanding. Sean McBride, Blue’s salesman is always at the other end of the phone to answer any questions. I would find it very difficult to now go anywhere else other than Blue for any plant equipment and machinery. Jason McPolin, Managing Director, Irish Waste
The Process Albeit only relatively small tonnage, the company takes in C&I waste from business across Northern Ireland. The waste is initially shredded using a Doppstadt DW 3060k slow speed shredder before being loaded into the plant hopper via a Fuchs material handler, both of which have been recently purchased via Blue Ireland. The material primarily enters a BlueMAC Trommel which splits the material into +40mm and -40mm fractions. The 40mm fines flow under an overband magnet which removes any metal contamination before being fed into a flip flow screen which separates the -12mm and -15mm. The remaining material goes into a GK density separator, splitting out the lights and heavies. The light fraction which is contained within a cage is used to power cement kilns, with the heavies further processed at the company’s other processing plant in Duncrue Street in Belfast.
The -12mm and -15mm fractions are further processed in order to comply with the acceptance criteria for landfill although the long term plan is to further process this waste to extract even more recyclable material. The +40mm goes onto a picking line, designed for up to 12 operatives due to the sheer variety of material in the C&I stream. Following on from that, the waste moves under an overband magnet to remove any ferrous contaminants, before entering another GK density separator to segment the heavies while the lights are transferred to a static BlueMAC All Metal Separator. This unit removes any remaining ferrous via a rotating magnetic drum and the non-ferrous utilising an Eddy Current. This leaves a high quality RDF material that’s second to none.

Getting the right crusher for the job When there’s a challenge, ask Blue to demo your solution Back in 2007 when the Skene Group purchased two Powerscreen screeners from Blue Scotland, the team at Blue naturally hoped it would result in subsequent purchases. Since then however, despite the development of a strong relationship between the two businesses due to the servicing and wear parts supplied by Blue Scotland, it has proved fruitless in terms of machine sales. The issue being the screeners, a Chieftain 2100 and Warrior 1400, have performed so well and so reliably that the management team at Skene, including joint Managing Director, Darren Forrester didn’t see the requirement in replacing them. In fact Darren describes the machines as ‘Bomb Proof’. So it was only when the Skene Group faced a challenging problem, did there become an opportunity for Blue to make a follow up sale…just the eight years later. As with all quarries it is important to keep them ‘balanced’ ensuring demand for all material fractions are relatively even. In the case of Skene however, they needed another channel for the -40mm, and although they had a potential solution they could not crush this material down to the specific size required by the customer.
The guys at Blue put everything into addressing the challenge we had, and we hugely appreciate the time and resource they put into this sale. No other company said they would sort our issue apart from Blue, and they did exactly what they promised. Darren Forrester , joint Managing Director, Skene Group
Enter the Blue Team. Alistair Rees, Blue Scotland’s MD Austin Carey, along with Tony Weir, Group Technical Director and Powerscreen’s Chief Cone Designer, Tim Cummins, all visited the site to understand the issues Skene faced and the objectives they wanted to achieve. They then not only made an informed recommendation in the form of a Powerscreen 1150 Maxtrak Cone Crusher, but also supplied the machine for demo. The crusher achieved exactly what was required, resulting in the purchase of the
machine. With its renowned Automax technology, the 1150 Maxtrak is designed for direct feed and creates an excellent product shape, so was perfect in this particular instance. As you would expect from Powerscreen, it incorporates a heavy duty chassis on its tracked frame and can comfortably achieve output volumes of 300tph. The machine is currently working at both Skene quarries, at Soutra Mains in the Borders and Lomond, near Fife. As it’s working equally as well on the contrasting types of stone, an unexpected bonus for the Skene Group, it looks like Blue could be waiting another few years for their next sale.

Introducing the new Doppstadt SM 620 SA - available from January 2016 Testing of the new SM 620 SA prototype has now been completed meaning that Doppstadt are ready to roll out the machine into full production from January next year. The machine passed the acid test during the last couple of weeks. Some of the key features of this machine include the 7m続 capacity feeding hopper, which offers 40% more usable volume compared to SM 620 Plus. Furthermore an optional hopper extension would increase the volume up to 9m続 capacity. The state of the art Deutz diesel engine TDC 3.6 L4 with 90 kW offers some extra power over the SM 620 Plus, while fuel consumption remains low due to reduced RPM.
Automatic switch off on unauthorised opening of one of the maintenance doors
Safety first The health and safety concept of the machine is adapted from SM 518 Plus. For example the contact-free door switches increase the operators卒 safety. In addition, the machine would switch off automatically in the event of an unauthorised opening of one of the maintenance doors. Although the machine offers an enlarged feeding hopper as well as a 5.5m (18 ft) long output conveyor, it is still a mobile and compact unit, easy to handle and transport. Due to the permissible maximum weight of 24 tons with a trailer to truck coupling load of 8 tonnes, it is also possible to haul the machine, including all available optional hopper attachments (e.g. tip-ping grid), without disassembling them for road transportation.

First class contract win L&W Contractors call on Blue Fuchs to help them get a new Network Rail contract
Network Rail, who run, maintain and develop Britain’s rail tracks, signalling, bridges, tunnels, level crossings and many key stations, recently approached long term suppliers, L&W Contractors, asking them to tender for the supply of five material handling machines to unload and load a variety of materials from their rail carriages and move scrap metal within their sites. Although L&W had been supplying Network Rail with machinery for over 25 years, their expertise lay in plant equipment and not the type of machinery required for this particular project. This required the company to branch out, utilising their many contacts to gain advice on the most appropriate type of equipment for this particular job. Despite being up against some of the world’s leading manufacturers of material handling equipment, it became clear that Network Rail valued the relationship they had built with L&W, meaning they were in with a shout of the contract, if they could source the right type of kit. Being heavily involved in side-car racing, Managing Director of L&W Contractors, David Walton is a good friend of Roger Body, owner of the RKB-F1 team who compete in the British Side-car Championships. Having spoken to Roger about the potential contract, he suggested L&W contacted Eugene Donnelly at Blue London, who actually sponsor the RKB-F1 team to see if they could assist. This ultimately led L&W to propose the Fuchs MHL 350 as a solution for Network Rail.
Once I had contacted Blue Fuchs everything came together perfectly. Clearly our working relationship with the customer placed us in a strong position. Added to that was the clear quality of the Fuchs machines and the fact that Network Rail already had experience of the Fuchs equipment and were thoroughly impressed. David Walton, Managing Director, L&W Contractors
With an operating weight of up to 37.8 tonnes, a reach of 16 metres and an undercarriage width of 3 metres, the MHL 350 is a particularly stable machine and perfect for this particular project. The machine also boasts a high-output 160-kW turbo diesel engine and powerful hydraulics which operate in a notably efficient dual-circuit system ensuring that even heavier loads are handled with precision and speed. Furthermore the multi-functional display instantly provides an overview of all important operating data and the steering components are ergonomically and clearly arranged. All this plus the comfortable seat, height-adjustable cab and large panoramic windows ensures that complete surveillance is guaranteed even on workintensive days and means that it was the only choice for the decision makers at Network Rail. The Fuchs machines were delivered in November and are already hard at work.

which belie its size. O’Donovan’s new shredder is hard at work at the company’s Tottenham MRF, pre-shredding material prior to trommel screening and speeding up the process by shredding waste to a manageable size. An additional benefit is the significant volume reduction of the processed waste on site, which contributes to space-saving storage at this compact location. Marathon’s Model 250 Galaxy2R twinram baling press is equipped with a highly efficient power unit and features a robust, full-penetration compaction ram to produce high density bales to the requisite transport dimensions. A state-of-the-art programmable PLC controller provides automatic and manual control, diagnostics and bale set-up functions, which enables operators to swiftly and easily switch to match differing recyclables. A multi-purpose door serves as a bale separator, bale release or bale clamp and also allows for variable bale widths. We certainly did our due diligence on the equipment available in the marketplace but it was the build quality and efficiency that helped us to make the obvious choice. We also have a long standing and strong relationship with the team at Blue London and their sales director Barry O’Regan. I therefore know that any issues with any of the equipment will be dealt with immediately to minimise downtime and keep our business running Jacqueline O’Donovan, Managing Director, O’Donovan Waste Desposal

The Doppstradt DW2060 is always ready to go Basingstoke Skip Hire, a major supplier of waste management solutions throughout the South, have recently taken delivery of a Doppstadt DW2060 K BioPower from Blue Machinery Southern. The company, which offers a range of services including skip hire and trade waste collection services across the South, have purchased the shredder to assist with a number of processes within the Wade Road site. Firstly the machine is pre-shredding the C&D waste coming into the plant, before it moves to the manual picking line. This takes the material size down to a more manageable size for ease of picking and has also helped to ensure against belt damage on the picking line itself. Basingstoke Skips also take low grade wood, which is Pre-shredded by the new machine before being fed into a Doppstadt AK 435, also supplied by Blue Southern a few years back. This helps to create a perfectly sized product, sold locally for biomass. The DW 2060 works on the single-shaft principle with hydraulically controlled shredding comb, making it an ideal solution for these applications. The 2m (6’ 7”) roller rotates at 32 rpm, with the 28 wear-resistant steel roller teeth and 15 comb teeth shredding the materials. The comb also opens automatically if necessary, illuminating potential damage to the machine by large unshreddable contaminants. The highly efficient Mercedes-Benz engine and working parts of all DW shredders are easily accessible from both sides of the machine for ease of
service and the replacement of wear parts. The noise level is also very low, thanks to the large low-speed fan. Furthermore, with its hydraulically controlled rear conveyor, the DW 2060 is ready to go in no time at all. Magnets for iron separation were incorporated into the machine for Basingstoke Skips and the multifunctional display shows all machine data allowing for simple operation. We had a look at a few machines, but the size of the product coming out of the Doppstadt was perfect. It makes the waste a lot easier to pick and speeds up our entire process. The tracked machine also allows us to use the machine across different locations throughout the site and on various applications. Laurie Hughes , Director, Basingstoke Skip Hire Laurie also highlighted the great service offered by Blue, saying “With Blue you get exactly what it says on the label. Brian McNabb our Area Manager is always at the end of the phone and the service package is exceptional” The machine is currently processing over 100 tonnes of material per day on both the waste and wood applications, which are making the business more efficient and therefore cutting running costs.

Clearway go from strength to strength in Ireland’s scrap metal recycling sector The Clearway Group is a family owned business, established by John Murphy in the 1960’s. Having started in the waste management sector, the organisation soon evolved into scrap metal recycling, which remains at the core of the business today. In 1999 Clearway acquired Hammond Lane, a location synonymous with the metal recycling industry for over 100 years, and continues to trade under that name within the Clearway Group of companies. This acquisition helped establish Clearway within the scrap metal recycling sector, providing an exceptional platform for the business to develop into the largest recycler, processer and exporter of scrap metal in Ireland. Today the organisation has eight state of the art facilities which are located throughout Ireland in Portadown, Belfast, L’Derry, Sligo, Dublin (Port), Dublin (Clondalkin), Athlone and Cork . Each ultra-modern facility has been built to the highest legislative standards incorporating the latest technological innovations, many of which are unique to the Clearway Group of companies. This allows for the efficient acceptance, processing and exporting of all its recycled metal. The Group currently employs 160 personnel, and continually invests in the most advanced and efficient processing and handling equipment. This enables the company to achieve a high quality product, which is precise to customer specification while complying with ever increasing legislation within its industry. It was Clearway’s focus on investing in the very best machinery, maximising the efficiency and effectiveness of their sites, which brought the Fuchs range of material handlers to their attention.
Their first purchase was shortly after the company purchased Hammond Lane and has grown considerably over the eight sites since. On the machines, Tracey Murphy, Clearway Director commented “Fuchs are clearly a leader within the market and have a proven history of reliability”
Fuchs offered the Clearway Group a very competitive and comprehensive package. Blue are here in Ireland and have good knowledge of our Company’s high standards and the demands on our equipment. Based around this, they have worked closely with us to provide us with a package to suit. Blue have an excellent backup team from Sales, Service and Parts who have extensive knowledge of the machines and a wide range of parts available for immediate delivery. Tracey Murphy, Director, Clearway Group
When the company started to look for four new Material Handlers back in July, their association with Fuchs naturally meant they were a machine in contention. However, the company wanted to analyse the market and other potential brands before making their final decision. After seeing several machines on demonstration, it was clear that the Fuchs equipment still had the edge, particularly with the competitive package Ronan and Liam Brophy, from Blue Ireland were able to offer. The specification selection was dictated by each depot’s product throughput to enable efficient handling and processing of the products, with two MHL350 and two MHL360 handlers being the machines of choice.
