In response to customer feedback and a strategic focus on events at a more localised level, Blue have taken the decision not to exhibit at this year’s RWM Exhibition in September. 2015 has been Blue Group’s strongest year since its inception in 2004, with growth of over 20% from the previous year. A number of factors have clearly contributed towards this, including an intensive period of product development from our key suppliers and a growing perception that our machinery is the most reliable in the market place. This has been enhanced by the work ethic and dedication of our ever growing Blue Team to support our customers with choosing the right product for their business and supporting with a strong and focused service and spares team. It was also clear that the events that enabled us to better engage with our customers, as well as understand their business challenges and requirements, were the Powerscreen World Dealer Conference back in March and the Doppstadt 50th Anniversary celebrations in June. Blue took more than 250 customers to these events, allowing us to spend quality time developing relationships and introducing new product developments via working demonstrations.

Six of the best for Leith Leiths (Scotland) Ltd, a multi-discipline organisation and one of Scotland’s largest, privately owned quarrying and civil engineering businesses, has taken delivery of a Powerscreen Warrior 2100 and Warrior 1400X Apron Feeder, two cone crushers in the form of a 1000 and 1150 Maxtrak, a Chieftain 2100X triple-deck inline screen as well as a H6203R horizontal screen. Leiths has been a customer of Blue Machinery Scotland for over 16 years and this latest major investment continues the successful partnership that has developed over the years.

The Powerscreen cone crusher and screening ranges have always been market leaders in terms of productivity for us, and it was a relatively easy decision to source our equipment from the Powerscreen distributor Blue Machinery Scotland. We’ve always enjoyed an excellent working relationship with the Blue team and are confident that our new screening and crushing plants will fulfil their various roles efficiently and productively. Kevin Sargant , Director, Leith

Leiths is a long-established family business with its head office in Aberdeen. The company owns and operates twelve hard rock quarries and four sand and gravel operations throughout Scotland, offering a wide range of products to a continually expanding customer base. As well as traditional quarry materials such as sand, gravel, aggregates, concrete and asphalts, Leiths also manufactures more specialised materials such as limestone filler, agricultural lime, road surface dressing and decorative aggregates. The company runs a substantial fleet of plant and vehicles, including tippers, mixers, hook lifts, bulk artics, powder tankers and low-loaders, as well as recycling, materials processing, excavating and materials handling equipment. This latest major investment in the Powerscreen crushing and screening plants continues and confirms the company’s tenet of operating a modern, reliable and productive fleet in all aspects of their diverse business. The 1000 and 1150 Maxtrak crushers feature the well-proven and renowned Automax cone crusher technology at the core. With potential outputs of up to 230 and 300 tonnes per hour respectively, both models maintain excellent and consistent product shape and have a high reduction ratio. Furthermore a hydraulic crusher setting, cone overload protection and metal detection all contribute to the plants’ operating efficiency. Rugged in construction with heavy-duty chassis and track frames the crushers have been designed for ease

of operation and maintenance. Both the 1000 Maxtrak and the 1150 Maxtrak models have been supplied with umbilical remote controls and dust suppression systems, and are equipped with the latest generation and improved fuel-efficient, low emission Scania diesel engines. As you would expect, the engines are fully compliant with EU Stage IIIB and feature Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emission control technology. The Powerscreen Warrior 1400 and 2100X mobile screening plants are both high capacity machines, with output potentials of up to 500 and 700 tonnes per hour respectively which, of course, depends on feed size, mesh size and material type. Agile on site, with heavy-duty crawler tracks and a removable pendant remote control system, both models have quick set-up times, easily accessible engines as well as screen media for maintenance convenience and screen changes. Hydraulically folding conveyors and highperformance hydraulics also offer optimum output. Both models are equally at home screening and stockpiling aggregates, blasted rock, recyclables and mined materials such as processed ores and minerals. They are powered by Stage 3B Caterpillar C4.4 ATAAC 4-cylinder diesel engines which provide power to spare, high efficiency and with reduced emissions. The Chieftain triple deck includes a patented hydraulically folding recirculating conveyor on this 3 deck version. It also incorporates a 2 bearing screen with adjustable screen speed and amplitude with hydraulic screen angle adjustment. Typically the machine can be set up within 30 minutes with hydraulically folding conveyors and track mobility. The Chieftain 2100X offers class leading stockpile discharge heights and a drop down tail conveyor, as well as a hydraulically raising main conveyor to aid screen media changes. Finally the H6203R features the horizontal screen ideal for handling high volumes of sticky materials, which is ideal for the Leith quarries, and for the exact, fine sizing demanded in many construction contracts. The H6203R offers a capacity output of up to 800tph and is powered by a Caterpillar C6.6 151kW Tier 4i engine. The machines adjustable elliptical throw combines linear and circular amplitude, producing an aggressive screening action, meaning it is also ideally suited to the various applications at Leith’s quarries.

Blue Group will incorporate the ZenRobotics Recycler into their recycling facilities designed by BlueMAC, the plant manufacturing division of the company, located in Ireland. Once incorporated into a facility the ZRR is designed to recognise and recover mixed waste, for example metals, wood, stone, cardboard and rigid plastic fractions from solid waste streams. Unlike traditional recycling machinery, that’s based on mechanic and electric components, the ZRR is powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The core of ZRR is the ZenRobotics Brain, which is the unique software that analyzes the data and controls the robots. It’s an essential part of the ZRR waste sorting system. Advanced software-based technologies enable efficient product improvements and upgrades. ZenRobotics Brain allows

unprecedented ability to learn new fractions, enabling operators to quickly react to changes in the waste stream. This kind of flexibility has not been available in waste sorting before.

This technology is the future for waste plants and we are delighted to be working with the world leader. The technology is almost three times quicker than a human, more accurate and can work over multiple shifts, which will ultimately save a company money over the long-term. Blue Group Director, Eugene Donnelly ZenRobotics Ltd. was founded in 2007 and is today a world leader in robotic waste sorting systems. Their competitive advantage comes from tedious scientific research and rock-solid product development. The ZenRobotics Recycler relies on artificial intelligence technology in both identifying the valuable raw materials in the waste, and in controlling the robot’s adaptive picking motions.

New Modular Wash Plant for Breedon Aggregates Breedon Aggregates has installed a Terex® Aggresand 165 Wash Plant at their Capo Quarry, Edzell, by Laurencekirk, Angus. The new wash plant was supplied and installed by authorised distributor Blue Machinery Scotland and is a fully modular system capable of processing in excess of 200 tonnes per hour of quarried sand and gravel feed material. The Aggresand 165 is producing a range of aggregates and concrete sand for Breedon at this multi-disciplined quarry. The Aggresand 165 is of modular design and construction, meaning that installation is simplistic enough to ensure that the plant can be readily set up for material production. An additional benefit is that it can be containerised for ease of transport and comes fully pre-wired and preplumbed, making the installation process as straightforward as possible for operators. The washing process at Breedon’s Capo Quarry sees the quarried aggregates fed into the plant’s 9m³ feed hopper, which features a remote control tipping grid. The material is then fed onto an inclined conveyor which delivers it to the first processing stage of the Terex® Aggresand 165 – a 4.8m x 1.5m triple deck rinsing screen box. Equipped with individually controlled spray bars on each deck, the two-bearing screens are fitted with polyurethane modular screen media on all

wins over Fox’s Pallets A new Doppstadt AK 235 high speed shredder has been recently purchased by Fox’s Pallets of Kettering to shred the low quality and damaged pallets which come in to the business. The business is currently run by cousins Rob and Arthur Fox, whose fathers set up the business over 50 years ago. It offers numerous pallet related services including the supply of all types of pallets for a range of business including the food industry, logistics, electronics and many more. The company also offers a repair service and currently has over 150 regular customers located from London up to Birmingham. The new high speed shredder was brought in initially on demo, however was soon snapped up by Foxs due to the performance of the machine. The machine offers continuous grinding by means of loadsensing material in-feed and the 16 free swinging flails mean the Doppstadt is more resistant to contaminants. Furthermore the tips of the flails are also easily replaceable. Commenting on the purchase, Director, Arthur Fox said, “Blue have always been good to us and are always easy to get hold of, which

makes a big difference to a business like ours. The service guys are also exceptionally knowledgeable, meaning they can often talk me through any small issues so I am able to sort them out myself”. As well as all the features of the machine, one of the key advantages was the compact design of the AK 235 with a working length of just over 12m and width of just 2.1m making it ideal for this particular site. The shredded material, of which the Doppstadt is predicted to produce around 120,000 tonnes on an annual basis, is sometimes sold for animal bedding, although it is now more often sold for biomass.

Premiertrak 400 Jaw Crusher processing granite

Opportunity knocks

for Advanced Material Processing Ltd Brand new venture in Scotland takes off with rip-roaring success Advanced Materials Processing Ltd, (AMP) is a new business launched in January 2016 by Kieran O’Kane, formally of Blue Scotland. The company offers hire and contracting services for material handling equipment including crushers, screeners and shredders, all manufactured by world renowned brands such as Doppstadt and Powerscreen, meaning that Kieran has switched roles and has now become a customer of Blue Scotland.

Having worked with Blue Scotland for so long, it gave me a great understanding of the industry in Scotland and what quarry and site managers need from their machines from a hire and contracting perspective. Kieran O’Kane, AMP Director

In only the first few months since AMP’s inception, the company already has a number of its machines out working in the field. Two Powerscreen PT 400 jaw crushers were the first machines purchased with one being the new pre-screen model. Both machines went straight to work, one on a contract crushing job, with the other busy on hires with demolition contractors. The crushers were very quickly followed by the purchase of a Chieftain 2100X, which is on a long term hire, processing sand and gravel. The focus then shifted to getting the environmental side of the business up and running. A Doppstadt SM 620 trommel was initially purchased to process green waste and biomass, with this machine also going out on a long term hire. In this instance the customer was so happy with the machine, the service he received and level of expertise shown by AMP, that a further contract for two more trommels was awarded.

All the machines have been purchased from Blue Scotland with the plan to purchase further machines, including a slow speed and high speed shredder before the end of Q1. Ultimately the objective is to have a 25 strong fleet of crushers, screeners and trommels to service customers throughout Scotland.

The company was set up due to the clear opportunities within the machine hire sector for high quality, reliable equipment and a level of service that customers can depend on. Whilst there are currently a number of competitors in the market, AMP’s clear strategic advantage is material and product knowledge along with the experience, contacts and strong relationships Kieran has built up over the years working in the industry. Having an engineering background, Kieran has worked all over the world with Powerscreen and is therefore able to offer a very hands on approach for his customers, giving him a clear advantage over his competitors. AMP is quickly developing a strong team at their new facility in Stirling, Scotland, with two fitters/operators employed on a full time basis. There is also a member of staff working in an admin role as well as a Marketing Manager who has already designed and developed the company’s new website: www.ampcontracting.co.uk

Everyone at Blue would like to wish Kieran and his team ongoing success with this new business venture. We are sure AMP will continue to grow and no doubt eventually become the leading hire contracting services provider north of the border.

Six makes sense for Bryn Quarry A six machine Powerscreen train has recently started work in Hengoed, South Wales after the crushers and screens were sold into Bryn Quarry Ltd by Blue Southern’s Sales Manager, Brian McNabb. The machines have been purchased to crush and screen Blue Pennant grit stone 68 PSV (polished stone value) at 14mm, 10mm and 6mm. The quality grit stone is highly skid resistant and is therefore used on most motorways and dual carriageways. The 14mm and 10mm are used within the main stretches of the roads, while the finer 6mm is the surface often coloured red on the approach to roundabouts and tight corners on higher speed roads.

The main challenge was getting the product ‘in spec’, in terms of shape and size of aggregate. For surface dressing of roads, particularly the thin wearing courses, the correct spec is critical. Having experience of many machines over the years. I knew that Powerscreen would be the best option to achieve the right size of material on a consistent basis. Jon Lewis, Bryn Quarry Limited

The Process Initially Blue Pennant is taken from the quarry face and loaded into a Premiertrak 400 Pre Screen. This pre-crushes the material down to around -125mm. From there the material is fed into a 1150 Maxtrak cone which reduces the material further to around -40mm, before it is fed into the first of three Chieftain 2100X screens. This first double deck separates the +/- 40mm with the +40mm being fed back into the 1150 Maxtrak until it is reduced to the required size. Dust is removed from the process via this Chieftain and indeed the following two in the train. The -40mm moves forward to the second Chieftain 2100X, which separates out the +/-18mm aggregates and again removes any dust. The +18mm is fed into a 1000 Maxtrak cone for further crushing, moving round this loop until it reduces in size to -18mm. This -18mm then moves on to the final Chieftain 2100X triple deck, which separates the material into the three fractions, 14mm, 10mm and 6mm.

Another key benefit of the Powerscreen machines is how quickly the decks on the machines can be changed, meaning the configuration of the train can be adapted and be back up and running within a couple of hours.

Warrior becomes

J & D Dale’s first screen A new entry level Powerscreen Warrior 600 Screen has been purchased by J & D Dale to help develop their growing business. The company began back in 1991 when father James set up Dale’s Diggers with just a tractor and a JCB. Over the years the company has expanded modestly with son David and David’s wife Anita joining the business and completing the team. The business now offers a range of services including groundwork and house extension footings, but it was related to the supply of aggregates and top soil, a new venture for the business, why they ultimately purchased the Warrior. The excavation work from the core part of the business was creating a substantial amount of soil and mixed aggregates. Realising the potential value of this material, James and David initially purchased a screening bucket to separate the varying qualities of soil and sized aggregates. The equipment however was only allowing the company to process low quantities per hour when James and David’s time was limited. Blue Central therefore introduced the guys to the new Powerscreen Warrior 600 Screen which offers a three way split with its double deck, and can process 100 tonnes per hour on even sticky soil. This is compared to the bucket which was screening less tonnage and was considerably more labour intensive. In the main, James and David process soil extracted from the projects in which they

14

We thought a screening machine would be out of our budget, particularly one of this pedigree, but it wasn’t. With the increased tonnage we are able to process, the machine will pay for itself in no time and it’s helped take our business to the next level. David Dale, J&D Dale Partnership our site from Blue were always great to deal with. We thought a screening machine would be out of our budget, particularly one of this pedigree, but it wasn’t. are involved. Material is loaded into the variable speed hopper which feeds the initial 40mm square mesh deck. 12-40mm is then separated via the second screen deck with -12mm being separated out for a high quality top soil, which is sold locally. Son David in the Partnership stated, “As this was our first machine Blue had to spend a lot of time with us to illustrate it was the right investment for us. Our salesman Rory was never pushy and the mechanics that visited

Call 0345 217 8755 Email sales@blue-group.com

The versatility of the Warrior is also a key advantage in this situation. Due to the size of the business it needs to work across a number of applications. While it is predominantly separating different qualities of soil, it has also been working on sorting aggregates for hard core. With this machine, meshes can be changed quickly and easily depending on the requirements of the business.

Fuchs equipment Ideal for Waste Recycling Applications

Make your waste facility more efficient with a Terex Fuchs Material Handler Over the last few years there has been an upward trend for the use of material handlers within the waste management sector. Whilst in the past site owners have chosen either an excavator or loading shovel to move waste around the site and load the trailers, many are now realising the many benefits of using a more purpose built machine.

Save Time Probably the most obvious advantage is the time, and therefore money saved with a material handler when transferring waste from one location on the site to another. With a loading shovel the operator must drive into the stockpiled waste, reverse out and move over to the unload point, be it a transport trailer, hopper or shredder. They must then tip the shovel and return to the original stockpile. In contrast a material hander with sufficient reach just grabs the waste from the stockpile, rotates and deposits the waste in the desired location with incredible efficiency.

Maximise trailer tonnage A further benefit of using a Terex Fuchs over other types of equipment within this particular application is that the operative can clearly see inside the back of a trailer if the waste is being loaded for transportation. This is thanks to the hydraulically raised cab which can reach heights ranging from 5.2m to 6.4m depending on model, offering panoramic views and a clear line of sight. The result is that the material handler can more evenly spread the material in the back of the trailer ensuring all available space is utilised. Furthermore the arm of the material handler can be used to compact the material, which, with more even spreading of material can increase the trailer capacity by up to 20%. This ultimately means every 6th trailer is free, potentially saving the business thousands of pounds every year.

Minimise spillage, damage and ensure the validity of your insurance The poor visibility experienced when driving excavators or loading shovels compared to the cabs on the Terex Fuchs machines is always going to impact on an operator’s driving, loading and unloading skills. When lifting a shovel high above the machine to drop waste into a trailer it’s often difficult to judge the actual distance of the trailer from the front of the shovel. At best there is going to be a high percentage of spillage, and at worst damage to both pieces of equipment. A material handler considerably reduces this risk. The machine moves into position, plants its legs making it safe and stable, grabs the material and rotates, minimising movement and the danger

of a potential collision, all from a far superior viewing position. This particular benefit of a material handler has also been taken on-board by insurance companies with some insisting on this type of equipment to maintain the validity of the plant’s insurance.

Health and Safety Of course, not only is it machinery that is at increased risk with less suitable equipment moving the material around the site, it is also the company’s employees and visitors. While there is always a risk, meaning vigilance must always be maintained, less movement and better visibility can only reduce the risk of anyone becoming injured on site.

A better working environment The general working environment for the operative is far superior to that of any other alternative machine which can be used to move material in a waste environment. The air conditioned and optional pressurised cabin ensures the immediate working environment is perfectly clean. The dual circuit hydraulic system not only offers more power but also improves precision and allows for simultaneous working movements regardless of load. Furthermore the air adjustable, comfortable seat, colour control display and sound proofing all have a positive impact on productivity.

Maximise the life of your equipment Generally the operation of these machines takes place in relatively dirty environments, no matter how well the site is maintained. With its reversible fan, designed to clear out the radiator it ensures the hydraulics do not overheat and generally maintains the life of the equipment. Alternative machines often get clogged up, resulting in them being removed from the working environment for a period of cleaner running or taken out of service altogether. And as the reversible fans are programmable, the operative doesn’t even have to remember to activate this technology. Finally all Fuchs machines have automatic monitoring and saving for deviating operating functions. This means the operative is notified if the hydraulic oil filters, oil temperature, coolant temperature or even the load on the Diesel Particulate Filter move outside the recommended levels so that any necessary maintenance can be carried out before any lasting damage is caused to the machine.

The 1400X screen includes a heavy duty, incline belt feeder with rigid one piece hopper, making it ideal for the aggregates environment

Blue London Chalk up another Powerscreen Deal Pinden Limited are one of the largest waste management, recycling and asbestos disposal specialists in the Kent area. The business also provides large quantities on graded chalk and recycled aggregate material to various industries. The need to process more chalk is ever increasing as well, as the demand for recycled aggregates. Pinden have recently made significant investment in plant and machinery to maximise the efficiency of this part of the operation It is due to this focus on purchasing reliable equipment which lead the company to Blue London and the eventual purchase of two Powerscreen machines. A Warrior 2100 was acquired to work in the quarry grading chalk, whilst a Warrior 1400X is busy working within the business’s Aggregates Centre.

The 2100’s ability to process damp chalk really impressed us, as did the overall quality of the machine and the deal that Blue London offered. Mike Bishop, Director at Pinden’s

The Warrior 2100 is engineered to include the proven Triple Shaft technology, unique to Powerscreen heavy duty mobile screens. The triple shaft design ensures that the 16’ x 5’ screen box is highly efficient while maintaining exceptional throughput productivity. The extreme screening acceleration offers the Warrior 2100 improved capabilities over its class rivals, especially in sticky scalping applications such as that at Pinden’s chalk quarry. The 1400X screen incorporates an adjustable angle, grease lubricated 2 bearing, 2 deck screen box. It also includes a heavy duty, incline belt feeder with rigid one piece hopper, making it ideal for the environment in which it is working.

Lower energy consumption means lower costs - E-Crane® is the industry’s ‘Green Alternative’

E-Crane - Now available via Blue Fuchs ®

The range of cranes from Belgium manufacturer E-Crane® are now available via our Group Company Blue Fuchs, who specialize in this type of material handling equipment. E-Crane® are a manufacturer of cranes for the bulk handling and scrap sectors. Starting with the 700 Series, which has a reach of over 24m, the range increases in size up to the 3000 Series which has a reach capable of spanning over 48m. The cranes can also grab from 5.5mton up to 35mton. E-Crane® have been doing things quite differently for the last 25 years. Utilising the principle of equilibrium, where the stick is connected to the rotating counterweight by means of a connecting rod. This means the load can be moved from point A to B at a fraction of the energy usually required, thus making E-Crane® the ‘green alternative’ within the marketplace.

Applications Bulk Handling

Scrap Handling

Designed specifically for barge and ship unloading, E-Crane is a proven and trusted solution in many bulk material handling industries. Most dedicated systems for offloading coal, limestone and other bulk materials are costly, inflexible and require an expensive, hard to maintain infrastructure. The versatile, flexible E-Crane® is just the opposite. E-Crane’s modular design and custom solutions make it the ideal equipment for any bulk handling application. E-Crane® is purpose built for dedicated tasks including:

The versatile E-Crane® tackles any scrap handling job you put under its boom: From ships and barges to trains and trucks, all are unloaded with ease. The E-Crane® shines on dedicated tasks including:

Offloading Panamax/Handymax sized Vessels Barge Loading/Unloading Ship Loading/Unloading Feeding Hoppers Stockpiling

The E-Crane philosophy is simple; it’s better to start with an energy efficient design rather than adapting to a fundamentally inefficient one - Keeping your energy costs low, whilst moving more material faster than conventional cranes.

Feeding shredders Filling shears Loading charge baskets Load or unload ocean going vessels with higher throughput than any other type of crane, bar none. Move scrap at the lowest cost per ton handled in the industry and let E-Crane® take your scrap yard to new heights.

Key benefits Operator friendly with easy controls and an ergonomic cab 100% spare parts availability and lower maintenance costs with minimal downtime The counter weight of the E-Crane® means there is no tipping point on the machine All machines can be rated as a crane or as a material handler, offering higher lifting capacity

The quest for Zero to Landfill Blackpole Recycling, based in Worcester, have recently purchased a Fuchs MHL 250 and a Doppstadt 2060K slow speed shredder in their aim to achieve ‘Zero to Landfill’. The company was set up in September 2000 by Jonathon Dew and his father David. Today it remains a family business with many family members active within the company on a daily basis. Over the years the business has grown considerably, and now has 40 employees including drivers as well as office and yard staff. While originally focusing on haulage, Blackpole now predominantly concentrates on recycling, supplying skips of all sizes, wheelie bins and recycled aggregates. At present, only 3% of the waste the company takes into the plant on a yearly basis goes to landfill.

The Doppstadt DW 2060K was brought in to pre-shred the material, making it much easier to process, which will ultimately increase the percentage of recycled materials. The machine is ideally suited for this particular application due to its build quality in the tough waste environment. This single shaft shredder also has numerous beneficial features including optimal tooth arrangement on the 2m wide roller which rotates at 32rpm. Furthermore the machine has 14 roller teeth and 15 comb teeth ensuring comprehensive shredding of the waste material. It has a reversible fan wheel, generous hopper shape and size for easy loading, electrically controlled reversing roller and a large return conveyor. The shredder is also equipped with a hydraulically foldable rear conveyor which contributes to a fast set-up time once on site.

We realised very quickly that both the Doppstadt and the Fuchs were the best in their class. Jonathon Dew, Managing Director, Blackpole

The Fuchs 250 is also perfect for this particular application. The height adjustable cab means there is clear visibility for loading the material into the Doppstadt, and as the cab is pressurised, the working environment for the operative is also much improved when compared with a loading shovel or excavator. In addition to this, there is the safety aspect. The Fuchs is planted with its legs down before grabbing the material and rotating, as opposed to other types of equipment which would be constantly moving around what is a very busy site at Blackpole. Commenting on the purchase, Jonathon Dew Managing Director at Blackpol, “We initially had the machines on demo to compare them with competitor shredders and material handlers. We realised very quickly that both the Doppstadt and the Fuchs were the best in their class. We also found it easy to work with the team at Blue, particularly Brian McNabb and Stuart Witt with whom we have developed a strong relationship”.
