Shorts Recycling Recycling and material handling supplier, The Blue Group, has recently supplied one of their longest standing customers, Shorts Recycling, with a total recycling package in Aldershot, Hampshire. Shorts Recycling is part of the Shorts Group, a long-established, independent family owned business offering a range of services including plant hire, agricultural contracting, skip hire, waste management, demolition and more. Headquartered in Ascot, Shorts provide services throughout Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey and the surrounding counties and are also delivering their products and services throughout the UK and Europe. A large amount of the waste Shorts collect, including wood, concrete and brick is turned into products such as soil and compost, mulch, wood chippings, crushed concrete, brick and hardcore. Shorts are rightly proud to claim that 100% of materials entering their transfer stations are recycled with nothing going to landfill. The new facility in Aldershot will not only take waste from Shorts own construction and demolition based activities but from a variety of outside sources. To complement their existing waste transfer and recycling stations, Shorts have recently put into operation a
02
complete Kiverco 615 waste recycling system featuring a fully lit and heated twin bay operator cabin. Material enters the recycling chain through another new purchase from the Blue Group, a Terex Fuchs MHL320D wheeled material handler. Seen as an ideal entry level waste handling machine the 19 tonne MHL320D is powered by a fuel efficient, 4-cylinder turbo charged Deutz diesel engine developing 85KW/114HP currently meeting Tier 3 emissions regulations. Supplied to Shorts with a hydraulically elevating operators cabin offering the operator an eyelevel working height of up to 5.2m, the MHL320D is ideally suited to loading the hopper of the Kiverco 615 Trommel system with incoming waste products and when required, loading finished products for dispatch. The MHL320D has been specified with 5.2m boom and a 3.7m multi purpose stick giving the handler a pin height of 10m and a reach, at ground level, of almost 11m. Shorts have opted for an Ardennes selector grab to load the various waste products into the Kiverco’s hopper. The 4.9m long undercarriage has been fitted with the optional four-point stabilisers which give the MHL320D a very stable 3.9m wide platform.
The MHL320D is equipped with hydrostatic all wheel drive as standard with power delivered through an infinitely variable axial piston motor giving the machine a maximum speed of 20km/h (12.4 mph). Braking to all four wheel sets is via a hydraulic single circuit braking system. The turning radius for the Terex Fuchs machine is a compact 7.0m. Operator comfort is of paramount importance to Shorts and the Terex Fuchs does not disappoint. With deep profiled, heat insulated glazing offering superb all round vision, height and tiltadjustable steering column and coming with air conditioning as a standard it will give the operator a pleasant working environment. Group Managing Director Gary Short commented on his companies latest acquisition “We are very excited about both of our new purchases and especially in the fact we now have a single point of contact for all of our recycling needs. The Blue Group have supplied us with a first class package to meet our requirements and the MHL320D is exceeding our initial expectations.”
Service is the key With the market now requiring a first class after sales service more so than ever before, Blue London have recently taken on new premise in Guildford to enhance this aspect of their service offering. The new strategically located facility has been specifically designed to enable refurbishments and maintenance work to be carried out in an undercover environment, with additional space racked out for key parts storage. Going forward, Blue can now offer a more comprehensive range of technical backup, from supply & fit and emergency breakdown assistance to bespoke service contracts.
Operations Director Paul Donnelly commented, “It has been our long term growth strategy to invest in the after sales side of our business as we firmly believe that the initial sale of the machine is only the beginning of our relationship with our customers. Our new premises and stronger team enable us to take on work which we previously have not been geared up to handle. We hope our customers will see the benefits of this investment going forward.” Please contact Larry O’Rourke (Service Manager) or Darren Gathercole (Service Coordinator) on 0870 898 8920 to discuss your requirements.
Last ever Powertrak! Specialist waste recycling and waste management company, MDJ Light Brothers, have recently purchased the very last Powerscreen Powertrak from Blue London. Originally Incorporated in 1971, MDJ Light Brothers have a long standing reputation for providing a first class service to the waste recycling industry throughout the UK and Europe. With a wealth of knowledge and experience in the recycling industry, the company continue to invest heavily in training and state of
the art equipment and their facilities in Sussex, Kent and in the Midlands, in order to continue to provide the highest levels of service. Looking back at the early days of the Blue Group, when the regional companies were individual Powerscreen dealers, it was machines such as the Powertrak which were instrumental in their future success. Early Powerscreen models such as the Powertrak opened many new markets due to the versatility and small footprint of this compact machine.
Light Brothers are using their recent addition in various applications including scrap, fines and site clearances. Owner Jonathan Light commented “The Powerscreen Powertrak is one of the most useful little machines we have ever bought and I wish I had bought one a long time ago.”

Tandem Balers Push Production Eurokey Recycling Limited, of Hinckley in Leicestershire, has installed two Marathon Nexgen 2R450 Twin-Ram Balers, sourced from UK distributor Blue Group. Working in tandem, the two new baling presses have already proved to be a wise investment, with Eurokey reporting a 60% increase in throughput and a 20% improvement in bale density. Eurokey Recycling is a well-established and growing company, providing a varied recycling and waste management expertise to industry, commerce, distribution and logistics companies, recyclers and the retail sector. Eurokey is a consolidator and trader of secondary commodities, with a national capability as well as interests overseas. 04
and commercial enterprises dealing with smaller volumes of waste materials - especially packaging. Eurokey has an inside stock-holding facility extending to around 53,000 square feet and a 130,000 tonnes per annum throughput capability, with processed waste materials being comprised largely of plastics (80%), ferrous and non-ferrous metals (15%), with the remaining 5% cardboard.
The Nexgen 2R450 Twin-Ram Baler is the largest in the extensive Marathon range, featuring cutting-edge electronics technology, advanced structural engineering and the highest quality build materials to create one of the most powerful, reliable and efficient machines of its type.
A compression force of 210 tonnes and the full penetration compaction ram ensures maximum bale density and cycle times are up to 24 seconds, depending on the material being baled. Bale weights vary from around 540kgs for lightweight material such as UBC, up to 1350kgs for steel cans. The Nexdoor® multi-purpose door can be used either as a bale separator, bale release or bale clamp and also allows for variable bale widths if required. A programmable controller provides a quick and easy switch-over to accommodate different recycleable materials for baling and the userfriendly Maestro® Colour Touch-Screen
features automatic and manual controls, diagnostics and bale set-up functions. Commenting on his company’s new Marathon Galaxy balers, Joe Bisland, Eurokey’s Commercial Director said “Buying a baler is a huge decision that you don’t have to make often, so it’s imperative that you get it right. The Marathon balers are excellent” he continues “because they can process a wide range of materials, from steel cans and cardboard to films and rigid plastics”.

Kiverco Screens Scrap Aylesford Metal Company, also known as AMC, were established in 1984 and have grown to become Kents leading metal recyclers. The company are renowned throughout the South East for delivering environmentally responsible and innovative waste solutions for all ferrous and non ferrous materials. Blue are delighted to welcome AMC on board as a new customer after they recently purchased a Kiverco plant for the cleanup of their small fraction scrap material. The plant consists of belt feeder and a KL 825 static trommel screening fines @30mm. A series of conveyors and magnets as well as a 3 bay picking line enables safe ferrous removal and product cleanups to be carried out.
Christian Elliot, MD of AMC and a leading figure in the scrap industry in the South of England, commented “As predominantly scrap metal recyclers, we are always looking at innovative technologies for improving our efficiency and exploring new markets. The new system from Kiverco has proved to be an enormous success as we are now managing to cleanup a material which has historically been awkward for us due to the small fraction size. Additionally its versatility has enabled us to utilise the system to clean up other products in a safe and user friendly environment.” Christian also added “I’m delighted Blue have acquired the Terex Fuchs dealership, as this product is a perfect fit for everything that blue stand for.”

Powerscreen Dealer Conference in South Africa Powerscreen, one of the world’s leading providers of mobile crushing, screening and washing equipment, recently hosted a World Dealer Conference in Cape Town, South Africa. More than 300 dealers and customers travelled from across the world to attend the conference. Damian Power, Global Product Line Director, said, “Cape Town is one of the most exciting venues in the world and was an easy choice as our host city. South Africa is a growing market and as the country’s construction and roadbuilding segments continue to grow in conjunction with a thriving mining industry, it is a key strategic market for the complete Powerscreen® product range. We have a long history in South Africa with ELB Equipment Ltd, who have consistently delivered an excellent record of customer service.” A remarkable demonstration was held at Portland Quarry, where 10 machines in total were operational. The first plant featured the large processing capacities of the XA750S jaw crusher with the Warrior 2400 screen.
10
The second plant consisted of an XA400S jaw crusher, 1300 Maxtrak cone crusher, H6203 screen, 1000SR recirculating cone crusher and a Chieftain 2100X 3 Deck screen. Then working alone was the XH320SR impact crusher. Austin Carey, Dealer Principal for Blue Machinery Scotland, said “Powerscreen delivered a fantastic and very informative World Dealer Conference in Cape Town. The venues, entertainment and working site were superb. The Blue Group really enjoyed catching up with likeminded dealers facing the same challenges. We look forward to now visiting a number of these dealers worldwide to discuss in more detail best practice and learn from one another.”
