Port of Workington takes Specialist Fuchs Materials Handler One of the UK’s fastest growing ports, the Port of Workington in West Cumbria, has further boosted its £5.7m improvement programme with the purchase of a large, fully mobile, high-capacity, longreach wheeled Fuchs MHL 385. This versatile specialist machine was purchased from distributor Blue Fuchs, a member of the Blue Group of companies. The crane has been purchased by Cumbria County Council, the port’s owner, and is the latest stage in a major expansion into container handling and developing the port into a key player in European multi-modal logistics with modern, multi-modal terminal transferring cargo between sea and road or rail.
“ The Fuchs ticked all the boxes in terms of specification, price, performance and after-sales product support” Liam McAleavey Port of Workington Operations and Safety Manager
The investment programme is being driven via a £5.7 million Britain’s Energy Coast initiative. The port handles around 300,000 tonnes of imported cargo every year, with over 250 cargo vessel movements. Materials include

both dry and liquid bulks, timber and agricultural products and recyclables. The port’s main cargo handling facilities are on the Prince of Wales Dock which has a 773m quay frontage with seven berths as well as a Ro-Ro facility. All berths are rail connected and the Port Authority also operates its own locomotive on the port’s own extensive rail system. Port of Workington’s Operations and Safety manager Liam McAleavey reports that they are delighted with their new Fuchs acquisition, particularly focussing on the excellent performance and the impressive elevating and forward-reaching cab which provides the operator with a raised line of sight, so important for the safe and efficient extraction of cargoes from vessels’ holds by giving a clear view right into the depths of the hold itself. The new machine was delivered with its own 4m³ clamshell bucket, which is augmented by Port of Workington’s own specialist attachments which include hook, bale clamp and pulp spreader beam. Vessels of between 2000 and 8000 tonnes are being unloaded by the Fuchs, with annual volumes of 20,000 tonnes of gypsum, 50,000 tonnes of wood pulp, 24,000 tonnes of SRF and seasonally variable loads of fertiliser and animal feed being the main cargoes.
chassis with four hydraulic outriggers for added stability on static duties, the MHL 385 is agile around the site with a 9.9m turning radius. Weighing in at around 75 tonnes the machine is powered by a low emissions, fuelmiserly V6 Deutz diesel engine which develops 273kW at 1800RPM. Travel drive is hydrostatic with infinitely variable speeds of up to 8kmh. Lift capacities are 29 tonnes maximum to 6.5 tonnes at 22m working radius. The cab boom provides a raised line of sight up to 8.5m for the operator, together with a 4.5m reach over the vessel being unloaded for optimum hold and hatch visibility; cab entry and exit for the operator is at ground level. The cab itself is state-of-the-art, featuring automatic machine monitoring and is an air-conditioned and extremely comfortable yet functional work station to ensure maximum operator comfort and efficiency. The logistical problems associated with transporting such a large machine to site were ably handled by Blue Fuchs’ specialist transport provider, TDR, which delivered the machine straight to the dockside ready for operator familiarisation and instruction.
The Fuchs MHL 385 was selected after an extensive and stringent tendering process, following strict protocols. Liam McAleavey commented that “the Fuchs ticked all the boxes in terms of specification, price, performance and after-sales product support. Our operators are very happy with it, especially with the extended boom for the cab giving them excellent visibility into the hold and a full view of the hatch.” The Fuchs MHL 385 is specifically designed and built for port and scraphandling duties. Robust in construction, mounted on a heavy-duty 8-wheeled

Taylor made for the Granite City Aberdeen based waste specialists Taylor Industrial Services have recently installed a state of the art dual line waste recycling system from Blue Scotland. Set up back in 1962, Taylors pride themselves on being a hands on family run business. With over 50 years experience in the waste management field, the family is now driven by Kevin Taylor who is 3rd generation. In the beginning, Taylors Industrial Services began servicing the granite trade and paper mills, but soon evolved with the changing nature of the North East of Scotland. Spotting a niche in the market due to new environmental legislation, Taylors then developed their services for the oil and gas industry with great success. This entrepreneurial vision for fresh opportunities has seen Taylor Industrial develop into one of the UK’s largest Waste Management independents.
06
Initially the plant will cater for the North Sea’s oil & gas industries as well as Aberdeen’s trade waste, however the plant will also allow Taylor’s to target mainstream C&D and skip waste. The new bespoke system consists of two independent lines, one being fed by a Doppstadt DW 3060 tracked slow speed shredder for volume reduction. The second line will recycle skip and C&D waste. The plant includes two large Kiverco trommels for fines removal, an air separation system complete with a compactor for lights removal and a single cabin 17 bay twin belt picking station for the safe recovery of recyclables Commenting on the decision to install a new system, MD Kevin Taylor said “As part of our growth strategy, we are looking to expand into new markets, so the new system had to be designed with this in mind. Primarily our objective was to improve our recovery rate with our existing waste streams but we felt there was a huge opportunity within
North East Scotland to target new business in other waste sectors.” On the £3million investment, Kevin Taylor added, “When making a purchase of this magnitude it was only right for us to have extensively researched the marketplace. In doing so we quickly realised that Blue Machinery (Scotland) represented the best value for money. Their experience in existing plants with other major Scottish waste management businesses instilled us with great confidence from the offset. Now that the plant is operational we are very happy with the equipment and the impact it has had on our recycling figures.” www.taylorsindustrial.co.uk

Neals continue to go Blue Long standing Blue Southern customer Neal Soils have recently taken delivery of five new machines to enhance their mobile fleet of crushers and screens. As an integral part of Dauson Environmental Holdings Ltd, the company works in unison with its sister companies Neals Aggregates, Atlantic Recycling, Cardiff Demolition and Bluefield. These complimentary businesses share resources to ensure cost effective soil & aggregate supplies and provide internal services for waste transfer and processing. Neal Soils recycle an extremely high percentage of the material collected and is involved with many forms of recycling and landscape projects. Originally setting out as a soil producer and inert tipping facility, Liam and David Neal have grown the family run business to now include activities such as waste management, RDF export, recycled washed aggregates and sands, compost and hazardous soil treatment and recovery. This diversification and attention to detail has stood Neal Soils in good stead and has played a pivotal role in being awarded some large scale projects for 2014. These projects have been instrumental in Blue Southern’s recent business from Neals which has seen the soil specialists purchase a Powerscreen XH 250 Impact Crusher, Premiertrak 400R jaw crusher, two Powerscreen Warrior 1800 mobile screens and a Kiverco MDS Mobile Drum Separator to enhance
08
their processing potential. The purchased equipment offers maximum flexibility to Neals across a range of contracts which will inevitably require a wide range of materials to be processed. The XH 250 is a small footprint impact crusher which is ideal for contractors, easily transported but capable of good tonnages on a range of materials. Similarly the Premiertrak 400 is at home across a number of applications, offering exceptional tonnages in its class with excellent reliability. The Warrior 1800’s speak for themselves, renowned world wide as the leading mobile screener, the 1800 version is capable of exceptional throughput and its robust design ensures versatility. The Kiverco KDS 1500 is a fantastic new density separator which is perfectly suited to skip waste fines clean up, where heavies and lights are split based on density and air, giving exact specifications. Blue Southern would like to thank Neals for their continued business and wish the family all the very best with their new contracts in 2014. www.neal-soils.co.uk
New plant just ‘fine’ for M&M Established in the 1970’s in Witney, Oxfordshire M&M have since been operating in Cassington for over 10 years and are renowned as a professional local skip company with an excellent reputation for quality, service and a genuine commitment to recycling. Located just off the A40 some 2 miles from Oxford City Centre, M&M’s Waste Transfer Station is in a prime position to facilitate the major road networks. As a long standing Blue customer who started out with a Powerscreen Trommel system 15 years ago, Blue Southern are delighted to have played a pivotal role in seeing M&M evolve as one of the premier waste management companies in Oxfordshire. The initial system was replaced around 9 years ago when M&M invested in a bespoke Kiverco static system which was designed predominantly for heavy material. As the company developed due to the improved recycling efficiencies and cost savings as a result of the recycling plant, their volumes have grown. The GK screen was then installed 3 years ago to manage the increased volume of lighter material.
With the recent government legislation changes surrounding skip waste fines, M&M have once again invested to enhance their service and improve operational and recycling efficiencies by installing a fines clean-up system which includes a Flip Flow Screen and Kiverco KDS 1500 density separator The fines are being taken out at -8mm using a flip flow screen, giving a fantastic product. The 8-50mm then continues through the Kiverco KDS 1500 density separator to split the heavies and light fraction. The heavies then go through a final quality check in a one man picking bay and are then passed under an over band magnet for ferrous removal Paul Lock, General Manager commented “Efficiency is greatly improved as a result of the fines system installation as we now have a one pass operation that is diverting about 30 percent by weight of aggregate from our landfill fines and giving us the cleanest landfill fines that we have ever had which now pass the loss of ignition test from the flip flow screen stockpile.” He added “As an added bonus we are now picking a nice amount of non-ferrous from the one man picking station and we have also been surprised by the amount of domestic/ portable appliance batteries that have been removed on the one man picking station which can only be a good thing for the environment.” www.mmskiphire.com

MA Crushing make their ‘mark’ at Scout Moor Renowned for being one of the toughest quarries in the UK, Scout Moor near Ramsbottom is not a challenge for the lighthearted. Owned by the Marshall Group, the quarry principally is worked for the Yorkstone, which is extracted and taken to their Halifax processing facility to make various different blocks for paving and roads. In order to get to the saw block, the remaining material has to be crushed and screened, with over 500,000tpa being produced. This was the challenge given to local entrepreneur Mark Aspin around 12 months ago, when the excavation expert diversified into contract crushing and screening to take on the contract to do all the material processing for Marshalls. With minimal experience in the field, Mr Aspin leaned heavily on Blue and in particular Pat McGeary for expertise and a guide as to what was the best way to tackle this historically difficult hard wearing stone.
Commenting on the initial advice from Blue Group, Mark said “Pat McGeary has been a huge help to me from the outset here at Scout Moor. His knowledge of the Crushing and Screening game, coupled by his understanding of the operation here at Scout Moor, was invaluable to me at the offset.” In the past twelve months, MA Crushing & Screening have grown exponentially and have taken delivery of a range of Powerscreen crushing and screening equipment from Blue Central including two XA 400 Jaw crushers, one 1000 Maxtrak cone crusher, two Warrior 1800 scalping screens and a Chieftain 1700 incline screen. This combination of equipment gives maximum versatility to MA Crushing, enabling different setups to be configured throughout the quarry depending on the material and required product specifications. All material produced at Scout Moor is used on local contracts in and around Lancashire and the Greater Manchester area. Mark Aspin added “I have to give great credit to the service department at Blue Central as they provide a first class same day service. Downtime is costly for Marshalls and ourselves so the after sales support is hugely important to us.”
On the relationship between Marshalls and MA, quarry manager Phillip Mallinson-Powell commented, “MA Crushing & Screening have made a huge impact here at Scout Moor. Their fleet of new Powerscreen equipment has improved the productivity dramatically, with increased throughput and greater reliability, meaning our operation as a whole has become much more efficient.” He added “The improved efficiency has made the general working environment better and safer for hauliers, staff and contractors alike.” On the opportunity from Marshalls, Mark was keen to show his gratitude “I was over the moon to be given the challenge here at Scout Moor and would like to personally thank Phillip, Ian, Dave and Paul, and I’m delighted that their gamble has paid of and has becoming a successful relationship for both parties.” Furthermore, Mark and Phillip would like to thank Blue Grain Security for their 24/7 surveillance of the site which greatly assists health & safety as well as theft prevention. www.maexcavationsandskiphire.co.uk
