Merry Christmas from everyone at Blue Group

Port of Workington takes Specialist Fuchs Materials Handler One of the UK’s fastest growing ports, the Port of Workington in West Cumbria, has further boosted its £5.7m improvement programme with the purchase of a large, fully mobile, high-capacity, longreach wheeled Fuchs MHL 385. This versatile specialist machine was purchased from distributor Blue Fuchs, a member of the Blue Group of companies. The crane has been purchased by Cumbria County Council, the port’s owner, and is the latest stage in a major expansion into container handling and developing the port into a key player in European multi-modal logistics with modern, multi-modal terminal transferring cargo between sea and road or rail.

“ The Fuchs ticked all the boxes in terms of specification, price, performance and after-sales product support” Liam McAleavey Port of Workington Operations and Safety Manager

The investment programme is being driven via a £5.7 million Britain’s Energy Coast initiative. The port handles around 300,000 tonnes of imported cargo every year, with over 250 cargo vessel movements. Materials include

both dry and liquid bulks, timber and agricultural products and recyclables. The port’s main cargo handling facilities are on the Prince of Wales Dock which has a 773m quay frontage with seven berths as well as a Ro-Ro facility. All berths are rail connected and the Port Authority also operates its own locomotive on the port’s own extensive rail system. Port of Workington’s Operations and Safety manager Liam McAleavey reports that they are delighted with their new Fuchs acquisition, particularly focussing on the excellent performance and the impressive elevating and forward-reaching cab which provides the operator with a raised line of sight, so important for the safe and efficient extraction of cargoes from vessels’ holds by giving a clear view right into the depths of the hold itself. The new machine was delivered with its own 4m³ clamshell bucket, which is augmented by Port of Workington’s own specialist attachments which include hook, bale clamp and pulp spreader beam. Vessels of between 2000 and 8000 tonnes are being unloaded by the Fuchs, with annual volumes of 20,000 tonnes of gypsum, 50,000 tonnes of wood pulp, 24,000 tonnes of SRF and seasonally variable loads of fertiliser and animal feed being the main cargoes.

chassis with four hydraulic outriggers for added stability on static duties, the MHL 385 is agile around the site with a 9.9m turning radius. Weighing in at around 75 tonnes the machine is powered by a low emissions, fuelmiserly V6 Deutz diesel engine which develops 273kW at 1800RPM. Travel drive is hydrostatic with infinitely variable speeds of up to 8kmh. Lift capacities are 29 tonnes maximum to 6.5 tonnes at 22m working radius. The cab boom provides a raised line of sight up to 8.5m for the operator, together with a 4.5m reach over the vessel being unloaded for optimum hold and hatch visibility; cab entry and exit for the operator is at ground level. The cab itself is state-of-the-art, featuring automatic machine monitoring and is an air-conditioned and extremely comfortable yet functional work station to ensure maximum operator comfort and efficiency. The logistical problems associated with transporting such a large machine to site were ably handled by Blue Fuchs’ specialist transport provider, TDR, which delivered the machine straight to the dockside ready for operator familiarisation and instruction.

The Fuchs MHL 385 was selected after an extensive and stringent tendering process, following strict protocols. Liam McAleavey commented that “the Fuchs ticked all the boxes in terms of specification, price, performance and after-sales product support. Our operators are very happy with it, especially with the extended boom for the cab giving them excellent visibility into the hold and a full view of the hatch.” The Fuchs MHL 385 is specifically designed and built for port and scraphandling duties. Robust in construction, mounted on a heavy-duty 8-wheeled

Service key for Blue The service departments are an integral part of the Blue Group. Not just a sales house, the Blue Group pride themselves on their aftersales and service support. The London office, in particular, has worked hard to develop strong relationships with its ‘service’ customers. The team consist of Darren Gathercole, Service Manager, Claire Guilfoyle, Warranty and Service Assistant and the Service Engineers, Al Cooper and Stephen James. Darren took on the role of Service Manager in April 2012 and has since re-invented the team to make it more efficient and streamlined, utilising new IT systems to allow them to keep track of each companies service schedule. “We have bought in new IT software which allows us to be much more organised with service plans. Being organised means we can have more time with the customer and less room for misunderstanding.” The team all do their part in serving their customers. “If a customer has a technical query and the engineers are all out on site visits, I will often contact the manufacturers support teams direct to save time”, says Claire. “Our manufacturing partners have excellent support on hand in terms of personnel and web based information which I refer to daily.”

04

Each engineer is given regular OEM factory training to keep up to speed with new products and developments. Steve Pidgeon, Workshop Manager at P B Donoghue (Haulage & Plant Hire) Ltd, has nothing but praise for the service team; “I have been working with Darren and the service team at Blue London for 7 years and have always found them to be extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Darren can often diagnose a problem over the phone, helping to save costs of an engineer visit. The engineers themselves are friendly and efficient. We are a large company and can’t afford to have down time and we rely on Blue to be available whenever we need them. I am happy to say that their team offer excellent technical and service support for our company.”

Clare and Darren of Blue London

MA Crushing make their ‘mark’ at Scout Moor Renowned for being one of the toughest quarries in the UK, Scout Moor near Ramsbottom is not a challenge for the lighthearted. Owned by the Marshall Group, the quarry principally is worked for the Yorkstone, which is extracted and taken to their Halifax processing facility to make various different blocks for paving and roads. In order to get to the saw block, the remaining material has to be crushed and screened, with over 500,000tpa being produced. This was the challenge given to local entrepreneur Mark Aspin around 12 months ago, when the excavation expert diversified into contract crushing and screening to take on the contract to do all the material processing for Marshalls. With minimal experience in the field, Mr Aspin leaned heavily on Blue and in particular Pat McGeary for expertise and a guide as to what was the best way to tackle this historically difficult hard wearing stone.

Commenting on the initial advice from Blue Group, Mark said “Pat McGeary has been a huge help to me from the outset here at Scout Moor. His knowledge of the Crushing and Screening game, coupled by his understanding of the operation here at Scout Moor, was invaluable to me at the offset.” In the past twelve months, MA Crushing & Screening have grown exponentially and have taken delivery of a range of Powerscreen crushing and screening equipment from Blue Central including two XA 400 Jaw crushers, one 1000 Maxtrak cone crusher, two Warrior 1800 scalping screens and a Chieftain 1700 incline screen. This combination of equipment gives maximum versatility to MA Crushing, enabling different setups to be configured throughout the quarry depending on the material and required product specifications. All material produced at Scout Moor is used on local contracts in and around Lancashire and the Greater Manchester area. Mark Aspin added “I have to give great credit to the service department at Blue Central as they provide a first class same day service. Downtime is costly for Marshalls and ourselves so the after sales support is hugely important to us.”

On the relationship between Marshalls and MA, quarry manager Phillip Mallinson-Powell commented, “MA Crushing & Screening have made a huge impact here at Scout Moor. Their fleet of new Powerscreen equipment has improved the productivity dramatically, with increased throughput and greater reliability, meaning our operation as a whole has become much more efficient.” He added “The improved efficiency has made the general working environment better and safer for hauliers, staff and contractors alike.” On the opportunity from Marshalls, Mark was keen to show his gratitude “I was over the moon to be given the challenge here at Scout Moor and would like to personally thank Phillip, Ian, Dave and Paul, and I’m delighted that their gamble has paid of and has becoming a successful relationship for both parties.” Furthermore, Mark and Phillip would like to thank Blue Grain Security for their 24/7 surveillance of the site which greatly assists health & safety as well as theft prevention. www.maexcavationsandskiphire.co.uk

Liam meets his heroes Blue Southern and Crush Ltd took it upon themselves to set up what turned out to be a huge adventure for Liam Gibbons, a terminally ill child from South Wales. Liam is associated with a great Charity called Dreams and Wishes, which was set up to give children and families a last chance to get a lifetime memory. Initially it was to be a Premier League game at Old Trafford for Liam and 3 members of his family with an overnight stay. Thanks to our good friend Dave Parker, he had more in store, Dave somehow managed to get Liam and his family to the Carrington Training ground on the Monday to meet the players including his favourite Wayne Rooney. All the very best wishes to Liam from all at Blue and Crush.
