Renewable Energy Powers latest BlueMAC MRF installation Woodford Recycling Services Ltd, based in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire has recently installed the latest MRF to be designed and built by BlueMAC, supplied by Blue Machinery Central. What makes this new and extremely efficient materials recycling facility so unusual is that it is believed to be the very first installation of its kind to be powered by on site generated renewable energy, producing what is effectively a complete recycling loop. Through its subsidiary Woodford Waste Management Services Ltd and Arevon Energy (who operate the biogas operation on site) the total source of power is provided for the entire plant, with 1 Megawatt also exported to the National Grid providing enough electricity to supply 1500 homes. Mark Farren owns Woodford Recycling Services Ltd, starting the business in 2010. Rational yet spectacular growth has seen Mr Farren’s operations encompass a national waste brokerage service, skip hire, wood processing, crushing, screening and waste processing with the latter achieving an 85% recyclables recovery rate from incoming waste streams. Employing 20 personnel and covering Cambridgeshire and the surrounding areas, Woodford Recycling Services decided to source a new MRF from BlueMAC as part of a £2M investment to increase its efficiency and capability in recycling and

02

reclamation whilst further improving vital and environmentally desirable tip-tolandfill reductions. “We looked at other potential suppliers as well as BlueMAC” said Mark Farren “but we were highly impressed with the design and robust build quality of the BlueMAC offering, as well as Blue Machinery’s in-depth knowledge and experience in designing and installing waste recycling plant, with over 140 already at work throughout the UK. We visited the BlueMAC factory to discuss our requirements and the design and engineering capabilities we saw there gave us total confidence in making our investment with the company.” The MRF was designed to be installed in Woodford’s brand new under cover premises in Huntingdon, providing a compact yet efficient materials flow from incoming waste stream to final separated and clean recyclable products. A belt feeder conveys the material to an 8.5m long x 2.5m diameter trommel screen, which features a split drum of 20mm mesh at the front for extracting -20mm fines and a 40mm screen mesh for the 20mm-40mm hardcore. A right-angle turn takes the material on to a blower for “lights” removal and then on to the

bespoke picking station, which is to commercial standard with plugs, lighting and heating all standard with BlueMAC, providing a safe, comfortable and productive working environment for the picking teams. The picking station is a 5-bay, double sided configuration with five drop chutes for “valuables” such as non-ferrous metals. The conveyor then takes the remaining hardcore under an overband magnet for ferrous metals removal, before a secondary final blower gives the material a last clean-up. Woodford Recycling’s BlueMAC MRF is designed to achieve a throughput of 20 tonnes per hour which provides an additional and future-proof capacity for Woodford Recycling as their anticipated growth continues and they strive for an eventual 100% diversion from landfill. MSK add AK435K to their complete Waste Management Service Part of the MSK Group, the multi services element, MSK (Multi Services Kent Ltd), has been building a reputation within the construction sector since 1996. Other services have been added over the years namely Waste Management in 2007, Security in 2008, Rail in 2010 and today the company is recognised as one of the leading providers of site support and rail infrastructure services across the country. As part of their waste recycling operation, MSK found a need to purchase a new Doppstadt AK435K high speed shredder. The AK435K is a powerful grinder with a high throughput rate and patented load sensing material feeder. Mark Levett, Operations Manager for the Waste Management and Recycling team has been very impressed with their new purchase; “I think it looks and sounds great and is more than capable of handling whatever the DW3060K slow speed shredder throws into it. I also like the size, once folded up it takes up hardly any room.” They purposely chose Doppstadt having known of its reputation as well as having purchased a DW3060K a couple of years ago; “I wanted a reliable machine that’s tried and tested.” says Mark.

applications, including biomass from green waste, C&I, domestic waste, RDF and more. Mark mentions they purposefully chose a tracked version; “The machine needs to be moved to different areas of the site throughout the day so being able to this by remote control is much more practical than moving with a machine or unit.” Overall Mark has been very impressed with Blue and its services, having purchased several machines over the years, such as a picking station, trommel and a Fuchs material handler. Mark adds, “When the part you need is in the UK, Blue will deliver fast and effectively.” MSK has certainly committed to a programme of investment in their waste management and recycling division, which has transformed this area of their business into one of the most environmentally effective and comprehensive operations in the sector.

They are currently shredding wood, between 400 and 800 tonnes a week, but the AK435K works on a number of

C.Putnam & Sons purchase Warrior 1400X C.Putnam & Sons Ltd have been providing Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire with reliable groundworks services for over 45 years. They pride themselves on providing the broad facilities required by building contractors and the public specialising in all aspects of groundworks up to DPC, drainage, sewer connections and utility trenches along with site clearance, top-soiling and paving. They also offer an operated machinery hire service for all types of excavation work with excavators up to 15 tonne. Earlier this year C. Putnam & Sons Ltd purchased from Blue Machinery (London) Ltd a new Powerscreen Warrior 1400X. The Warrior 1400X is a flexible screening machine, for operators who require a high performing, heavy duty, versatile machine that is easy to transport. It offers improved performance, lower operating costs, and easier serviceability while building on the reliable foundation of the class-leading ‘Warrior 1400’. Stuart Putnam, joint Managing Director of C. Putnam & Sons Ltd has been very happy with their purchase. “We had previously purchased a trommel from Blue and then decided it was time to upgrade as recycling is becoming a dominant requirement where possible in our trade.” “We get in a lot of soil from our customers so we needed a machine that could easily remove oversize so that we could be left with a clean screened soil to use for re-selling. We also re-use the materials that are removed from the soil, in particular, concrete pieces, which we are also able to recycle then sell.”

04

“Screening like this is a cost effective way of keeping up with the demands being put to our trade so we can re-use materials and cut down on landfill.” Peter McGuinness, Area Sales Manager for Blue Machinery (London) Ltd has been working with Stuart. “The Warrior 1400X separates his material giving him a top quality soil while cleaning up his hardcore. This is then put through a jaw crusher to produce a type 1 material, turning a waste product into a profitable product.” The Warrior 1400X has a number of features such as an output potential of up to 500 tph, a heavy duty, adjustable angle, grease lubricated two bearing, two deck screen box plus hydraulic folding conveyors with excellent stockpiling capacity and more. The Warrior 1400X screen has also been designed with economy in mind with reduced engine running speed and enhanced hydraulics, resulting in a reduction in fuel consumption compared to the previous model. This can translate into a substantial financial saving for customers over the lifetime of the machine. Stuart adds, “We have enjoyed doing business with Peter from Blue London, he’s very straight forward and I hope to work with him again soon. I was also impressed with the two lads who came to set up the machine so have been very pleased with the whole process.”

When 2 Tribes go to Blue Blue Group Salesman Mike Symons from Blue Central recently sold a Doppstadt AK435K on tracks to East Anglian Resources based in Peterborough Cambridgeshire. East Anglian Resources Ltd receive waste wood from various waste streams throughout their area and process and recycle into biomass, animal bedding or panelboard. Having made initial contact with East Anglian Resources Mike entered into detailed discussions with brothers James and Ashley Tribe, who own the business about their shredding requirements and proposed a Doppstadt AK435K as a suitable solution for their company. The AK435K has proved to be a successful tool for East Anglian Resources, providing the throughput, flexibility and reliability required to meet the ever increasing demands faced by wood recyclers in the UK. Having studied the market place and tried various alternative machines available in the UK, EAR felt that the low ‘cost-pertonne’ production along with the aftersales back-up and parts

08

availability from Blue Group made it the right choice for them to grow their business and best serve their customers now and in the coming years. EAR have invested in a new business partner that they can trust. Blue are the best placed supplier to bring new innovative products to help give the edge over the rest of the market place.

Thompsons Plant Hire continues allegiance to Doppstadt and Blue Machinery Thompsons Plant Hire, of Maryport, Cumbria, has purchased another Doppstadt machine from Blue Machinery Scotland, having already taken delivery of three Doppstadts in the last twelve months – two mobile shredders from the AK range and one SM620 trommel. The new addition is a DH810 precision chipper, which augments Thompsons’ existing fleet capabilities and, because of its compact dimensions and swift set-up time (typically two minutes), is ideal for taking into forests on the company’s specialist rig for chipping timber directly into trailers. Thompsons Plant Hire is a family owned business with Kevin Thompson running the day-to-day operations company. Established in 1994, mainly in haulage and traditional plant hire, Thompsons built up a national reputation for providing a quality contracting service which could turnkey a job with a range of excavation, processing, materials handling and transportation plant and equipment. Thompsons has diversified in recent years into shredding and chipping and is now considered one of the leading specialists in this field, with numerous nationwide contracts for the chipping of biofuel for prestige clients such as UPM Tillhill and Iggesund. The decision to add a further Doppstadt machine to the fleet is indicative of the excellent partnership that has developed between Thompsons, Doppstadt and their distributor Blue Machinery Scotland. Kevin and Victor Thompson both visited the Doppstadt factory in Germany during the negotiation process and came away impressed with what they saw.

“We found they have an excellent understanding and knowledge of our applications and we are delighted with the build quality, performance and exceptional throughput of the machines. We would also like to pay a compliment to Blue which provides an excellent after-sales product support service which we think is unparalleled in the industry.” Doppstadt sent one of their engineers over to site for a two-day training programme to instruct Thompsons’ operators how to maximise the new chipper’s full potential and to ensure a full understanding of all aspects of maintenance. The Doppstadt DH 810 precision chipper is designed to produce biomass to specification from virgin timber, has an hourly output of up to 120 cubic metres, is robust, reliable and features cutting-edge technology. The machine is powered by a Mercedes Benz diesel engine which develops 360kW and complies with Euromot IIIB emission standards. The rotor, axle, pulley and impeller have a combined weight of 2,700kg for heavy-duty log chipping (up to 810mm diameter) and the closed rotor is equipped with four knives to produce regular and consistent chip sizings with minimal fines. The entire chipper can rotate on its chassis by 270°; the discharge spout is hydraulically foldable and the turntable ensures maximum space utilisation when feeding into a trailer or static bin.

Wood Yew Waste purchase Doppstadts from Blue Machinery From their inception in 1999, family run wood reprocessing specialists Wood Yew Waste have developed into one of the UK’s finest recycling businesses. Based near Exeter, with further facilities in Plymouth and St Austell, Wood Yew Waste pride themselves on offering a complete wood recycling solution to the South West region. Initially setup by Clem Spencer when he became concerned at the amount of wood going to landfill, the business has grown steadily from the early days of processing under 50 tonnes of wood per week, to the current volumes well in excess of 1000 tpw. Mr Spencer’s entrepreneurial foresight has contributed greatly to the current Wood Recycling industry here in the UK of which he was recently the Chairman of their association, the WRA (Wood Recyclers Association). Wood Yew Waste pride themselves on providing a 100% recycling rate, with all wood handled by the company from throughout Devon and Cornwall

10

being processed and re-used in various forms from wood chip for panel boards, high quality animal bedding, as absorbent bio-compound and high specification biomass fuel which is exported throughout Europe. In order to further improve the specification of their end products and to meet with growing demand, Wood Yew Waste have recently invested in some new equipment with long standing suppliers Blue Machinery (Southern) Ltd. As loyal Doppstadt users for over a decade, Wood Yew Waste took delivery of a Doppstadt DW 3060 Bio Power slow speed shredder and two Doppstadt SM 620 Trommel Screens fitted with starscreen hopper inlays. The star screen inlay is designed to sit in the hopper of our SM trommels to enable a three way split and effectively remove the oversize material to be reprocessed which in this case is >150mm.

Commenting on his new setup, Clem Spencer said “Our new Doppstadt setup enables us to process large volumes whilst reaping the benefits of lower wear costs of running a slow speed. The Bio Power’s new teeth configuration enables finer shredding of the material and the new star screen gives us a 3 way split, ensuring exacting specifications of our end products.” Clem added “Additionally, on our new trommel we have invested in magnetic head drums on both product conveyors to allow us to remove any final ferrous material, ensuring a cleaner end product for our customers.”

NE Contractors fly the Powerscreen Banner North East based contract crushing and screening specialists Banner Contracts have recently taken delivery of a Powerscreen 1000 Maxtrak cone crusher and six Powerscreen Chieftain 2100 mobile screens to add to their extensive fleet. North East based contract crushing and screening specialists Banner Contracts have recently taken delivery of a Powerscreen 1000 Maxtrak cone crusher and six Powerscreen Chieftain 2100 mobile screens to add to their extensive fleet. Covering the North of England, borders and the Midlands areas for all contract crushing and screening applications, the family run business now have over 65 employees and a portfolio of over 110 machines which consists of crushers, screeners, dump trucks, excavators and loading shovels. As a long standing Blue Scotland customer who has operated numerous Powerscreen and Pegson machines over the years, Banners once again chose the ever reliable Powerscreen 1000 Maxtrak cone crusher when the requirement arose for a further cone in their fleet. Commenting on the purchase of the 1000 Maxtrak, Director Jo Banner said “We feel the 1000 Maxtrak is an excellent choice for an all round cone crusher. They have always worked well on our hard stone applications, giving us the required high specification product needed in terms of both cubicity and shape.” Jo added “The new Scania engine model of the Maxtrak not only meets our exacting production requirements but is also proving to be extremely fuel efficient, greatly reducing our running costs.” In addition, Banners have also taken delivery of 6 Powerscreen Chieftain 2100X screeners, 2 two deck and 4 three deck, to

replace 6 competitor machines. The Chieftain 2100X is a large volume mobile screen capable of upto 600tph which enables fine product separation across a wide range of materials. Unique features of the Chieftain 2100X include the high capacity hopper, belt feeder and radio controlled tipping grid. Jo Banner commented “The three key features of the Chieftain 2100X are the reliability, durability and production – which in our business are crucial to our success.” A further element which came into the reckoning during the buying process was the strong residual value of the Powerscreen brand on a Global basis, making the 2nd hand market much wider as a result. On this, Jo enthused “Our experience has shown that Powerscreen equipment has a much higher residual value than the majority of competitor equipment. This is obviously a huge consideration as when it comes to refreshing our equipment, it is important that we get the right money back, therefore making the overall cost of ownership more favourable.” Another important factor in Banner’s decision was the technical service backup for Blue. Jo commented “We enjoy dealing with Blue because they understand the needs of our business. The backup and service provided by Blue is invaluable to us in the contracting business and gives us the security required that any problems will be resolved ASAP.”

Neath Port Talbot Recycling install new pre-shredder Large scale SRF producers Neath Port Talbot Recycling Ltd have recently installed a new pre-shredder in the form of a Doppstadt 306 Ceron from Blue Southern. Neath Port Talbot Recycling (NPT) process black bag waste from Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend local authorities, recovering all metals from the waste stream, with the residual waste made into SR Fuel which is then used as a fuel for the cement industry as well as energy plants. The facility is the first of its kind in the UK to sign a fuel supply contract with the cement industry and thus presents a new development for local authority’s waste management strategies. The plant has planning approval for 260,000tpa with phase 1 currently constructed and running at a capacity of 166,000 tonnes per annum. Phase 2 which is yet to be completed will bring an additional capacity of 94,000 tpa. Over the years, NPT have invested in various shredders to enable this process to reach its full potential and when the requirement for a new pre-shredder arose, NPT carried out an extensive research project looking at various manufacturers and ultimately opted for the Doppstadt DW306 Ceron. NPT had been using a mobile slow speed shredder in the form of a Doppstadt DW3060 Bio Power for a year, so were familiar with the productivity, robustness

14

and ease of use synonymous with Doppstadt equipment. The Doppstadt DW 306 Ceron singleshaft static slow speed shredder is capable of high throughput and is ideally suited to most waste shredding applications. From pre-shredding MSW waste and C&I material, to shredding waste wood and mixed construction waste, the Doppstadt DW 306 Ceron static shredder is capable of excellent volume reduction. The extremely robust steel construction with fixing points for the drive unit, the quickly replaceable shredding tools and other easy to access components guarantee maximum performance and a long service life. All wear parts are easily accessible for maintenance and are made of wear resistant steel for long wear life. At NPT the new Ceron is used to shred all of the black bag waste before entering the processing plant, with the pre-shred proving to be a far better option than using a bag splitter with the amount of tonnage currently being handled. The Ceron is configured with a standard basket, along with a 65mm additional basket, which gives the option of running direct to the tunnels if their SRF shredders failed. The Ceron is also

fitted with an overband magnet on the discharge conveyor, allowing metals to be retrieved at the front end of the system. Commenting on the new Doppstadt static shredder, Head of Operations said, “Currently we process between 250-300 tons per day and the new Doppstadt Ceron is more than capable of handling this comfortably with extra capacity for when phase 2 is completed. One of the key features of the Doppstadt that swayed our decision was the maintenance friendly design. Not only is the shredder capable of excellent productivity, but the simple design enables simple maintenance to be done ensuring minimum downtime to our process. The hopper opens to reveal the rotor, which makes changing teeth easy."

ABP Teignmouth add to their Fuchs Fleet Blue Fuchs have once again supplied a Fuchs material handler to the UK's leading ports group, Associated British Ports (ABP) who own and operate 21 ports in England, Scotland, and Wales, and handle approximately a quarter of the country's seaborne trade.

Blue Fuchs have once again supplied a Fuchs material handler to the UK's leading ports group, Associated British Ports (ABP) which owns and operates 21 ports in England, Scotland, and Wales, and handles approximately a quarter of the country's seaborne trade. The new Fuchs MHL 360E is for the Port of Teignmouth, which is situated on the South West Coast, and is well placed to serve SW England. The latest addition to the fleet adds to the three Fuchs MHL 380 already onsite and will be utilised for the various dry bulk handling operations at Teignmouth. Ball clay is the port's principal traffic, handling some 200,000 tonnes each year, with the remaining 200,000 tonnes being made up of a wide variety of other dry bulks including agribulks, stone chippings, salt, and sand, as well as heavy lifts and abnormal loads. The new Fuchs MHL 360E offers unrivalled performance with more power coupled with lower fuel consumption. The new MHL360 E series raises the bar in the field of cutting-edge port handling technology with an even more sophisticated hydraulic and energy recovery system than previous models and a yet further improved highly

comfortable cockpit. With its combination of power and reduced emissions, as well as a hydraulic system that is both powerful and sensitive at the same time, the machine makes it possible to complete even the most challenging material handling tasks smoothly and efficiently. Commenting on their latest addition, Teignmouth and Plymouth Port Manager Dave Atkin said “We like the Fuchs machines because they have a proven track record in port handling applications. Their robust design, excellent reach and lifting capabilities coupled with the mobility of the wheeled chassis, makes the Fuchs an all-round perfect choice for us here at Teignmouth.” Mr Atkin added “Teignmouth is an extremely busy port, handling around 400,000 tpa, so the addition of the new Fuchs to our fleet will further enhance our operational capabilities. In addition, the MHL 360E’s size means we can easily transport the handler between Teignmouth and Plymouth if the demand changes between ports, giving added flexibility.”
