Southwark Metals grab two Fuchs Handlers One of London’s premier scrap metal recyclers have recently taken delivery of two new Terex Fuchs material handlers from distributors Blue Fuchs. Since inception in 1980, family run Southwark Metals have always been based in the London Borough of Southwark. Building on strong family values, Southwark pride themselves on providing a first class personal service to London and the surrounding areas. Southwark specialise in all areas of metal recycling and offer both a collection and drop off facility depending on the customers’ requirements. In order to improve onsite processing efficiencies, Southwark Metals recently invested in two new handlers, a Fuchs MHL 331 and a Fuchs MHL 320 for their South London operation. The MHL 331 operates in the reception area of the yard and is utilised for all loading, sorting of delivered material and stockpiling, whilst the smaller MHL 320 is situated inside the warehouse and is primarily used for sorting and stockpiling processed materials Renowned worldwide for their excellence in scrap handling, Terex Fuchs machines are designed specifically for the rugged, heavy duty scrap and metal recycling environment. Scrap handling requires a robust handler which guarantees manoeuvrability where heavy loads can be handled with ease. The robust design of the Terex Fuchs material handlers, with their solid undercarriage and strong steel

RWM a great success for Blue Group Since Blue Group PLC was formed eleven years ago, the company has always been a major exhibitor at the RWM show, taking this valuable annual opportunity to showcase new product launches to the UK market and to network with new and existing clients. This year was no exception and, following a bold decision to break from their usual outside display by taking one of the biggest stands inside the hall, Blue Group reaped the rewards with sales worth over £2m confirmed over the three-day show. The Blue Group team took orders on the stand for products right across their distributorships’ spectrum, including two Doppstadt shredders, a Powerscreen mobile screening plant and, through Group company Blue Fuchs, two MHL 320’s and one MHL 331 long-reach wheeled materials handlers. Group company BlueMAC, designers and manufacturers of tailor-made MRF systems and equipment, made a scintillating UK show debut at this year’s RWM in the wake of remarkable success since its launch late last year. Most of the two-storey stand itself was constructed from BlueMAC MRF elements and not only were two BlueMAC bespoke MRF plants sold at the show but also the new BlueMAC Mobile Eddy Current metals separator caused quite a stir! Numerous demonstrations of this latest development from BlueMAC were requested with several sales expected pending successful trials. Other new products and distribution partnerships also featured on the Blue Group stand at RWM. One Seven recycling plant fire suppression systems from Germany, being seen for the first time in the UK, created considerable

interest and two installations were sold at the show. Blue’s newest distributorship for Hartl screening and crushing buckets saw the launch of the new HBC 950 jaw crusher bucket on the stand, again to much acclaim and interest from visitors from both the demolition and recycling industries.
Commenting on the event, Blue Group’s chairman Pat McGeary said: “Without doubt this has been our most successful RWM exhibition and the most productive trade show in our history. The new products and distributorships we launched at RWM, together with our established ranges displayed so effectively on our excellent two-storey indoor stand, gave our team the best possible platform to take advantage of this annual industry showcase. The gratifying resurgence in the industry means that everyone is busy and time is of the essence so, on behalf of the whole team at Blue Group, I would say a huge thanks to all those who took the time to visit our stand throughout the event and we look forward to welcoming you all again at next year’s show.”

Blue Machinery take part in historic London street party
On Saturday, 8 November, The Lord Mayor’s Show was held in the City of London. One of the UK’s oldest street parties, the show has floated, trotted, marched and fought its way through 799 years of London history. Blue Machinery (London) Ltd was invited to participate as one of 153 entries, by Alderman Alan Yarrow, the newlyelected Lord Mayor of the City of London, whom Eugene Donnelly first met on holiday in Africa many years ago. One of the largest floats in the procession, Blue London showed off sister company Blue MAC Manufacturing Ltd’s ‘Mobile Eddy Current Separator’ (ECS), a self-propelled machine designed to separate non-ferrous metals from feed material. This was supported by Eugene’s family and Blue staff walking along side. “We are delighted to have been involved in such a prestigious and historic event” says Eugene Donnelly. “It was a great opportunity for us to support Alan in his effort to promote UK trade and industry. Northbank Demolition Cadishead based demolition specialists Northbank Demolition have recently purchased their third Powerscreen crusher, the company’s first Premiertrak 300 mobile jaw crusher from UK dealer Blue Machinery. Operating nationwide, National Federation of Demolition Contractors members Northbank will use the Premiertrak to undertake the processing of demolition arisings to provide a usable commodity either for the further development of projects or for sale to other users. Powered by a low emission, low consumption Tier4i Scania diesel engine delivering 275hp, the 32.5 tonne machine combines the output of some larger machines in the compact dimensions required by Northbank to access some of their tighter, more congested city centre sites. The low speed engine combined with low engine noise means the crusher can be used in city centre locations with little noise impact on the surrounding area.“The Premiertrak 300 is an ideal tool for our operation as its size and productivity of up to 280tph provides us with the ideal combination of both productivity and size” explains Paul Richards, Northbank Demolition
Managing Director. The Premiertrak 300 benefits from hydraulic crusher setting adjustment for complete and speedy control of product size and overload protection to prevent damage by foreign objects in the crushing chamber. This feature is particularly useful for the demolition company as steel rebar can sometimes be present when processing concrete. The addition of a hydraulically lowering conveyor for excellent access to minimise downtime in the case of a blockage along with large clearances in the bypass chute to enhance material flow and reduce the chance of blockages when processing sticky or difficult materials. A further maintenance feature is the large under crusher clearance and full tunnelling to reduce the chance of blockage due to re-bar build up. Should any re-bar get through the 1m x 0.6m jaw crusher, the unit is fitted with a powerful overband magnet to enable the steel to be extracted and leave the final product as clean as possible.
“The build quality is second to none as far as we are concerned and it is perfectly set up for the demolition industry.” Commented Mr Richards. With a 5m3 capacity hopper the 300 is ideally suited to being loaded by one of Northbank’s 25 tonne Doosan excavators and when coupled with a 20m tracked conveyor, offers the company a very productive processing team. Ease of setting up is another area that the machine benefits from with jaw speed adjustable to suit various applications via a single button and all conveyors folding hydraulically resulting in rapid set up speed. “We didn’t look at any other manufacturer as the 300 fits our needs precisely. It’s well built, reliable, we get good service and back up from Blue. It is also easy to move and very economical to run. We simply couldn’t ask for a better crusher for our operation.”

LKM take another Fuchs One of the UK’s leading materials recycling companies, LKM have recently taken delivery of another new Terex Fuchs MHL 350E material handler. Established some 35 years ago by owner Gary Eastwood, LKM has retained its ‘family business’ working ethos, despite becoming one of the largest material recycling processors in the UK. Head-quartered in Sittingbourne, Kent, LKM have built their success on a philosophy which combines a dedication to providing outstanding service with a determination to remain forthright and upfront with their clients. The company have evolved to become an all-encompassing waste management specialist, handling all material types including metals and wood, to cardboard and WEEE. As a long standing Terex Fuchs operator, LKM Recycling once again chose a Terex Fuchs handler when the requirement arose. The MHL 350E was the model of choice for the large volume handling of scrap metals. Given the throughput of material in the Sittingbourne yard, it was pivotal that the new handler was an all-rounder, excelling in all daily tasks such as loading, unloading, stockpiling and sorting. The Terex Fuchs MHL 350E really is the stand out material handler for the scrap industry due to its: operating weight of up to 37.5 tonnes, reach of 16 meters and solid undercarriage which is 3 meters wide giving unparalleled performance. The newly released Fuchs 350 E series has many upgrades to further improve the performance of the hugely successful D version. Not only does the engine fully conform to the Tier 4 (i) legislations without impacting performance, but the E series is now significantly more fuel efficient. Further improvements include the new multifunctional full colour display panel on the MHL 350E instantly provides the operator with an overview of all important data
12
and the controls are ergonomically and clearly arranged. The height-adjustable cab, comfortable seat and large panoramic windows guarantees complete surveillance for the operator. On the performance of the new E model, Mr Eastwood added “Not only has the operators working environment within the cabin improved significantly, but the fuel savings of the new model are proving to be substantial which is a real added bonus for us.”
Commenting on the latest addition, Commercial Manager Ryan Eastwood said: “In a fast moving, large volume operation like ours here at LKM, its vital to have the right equipment in order to achieve optimal performance. In the Fuchs material handlers, we truly believe we have the best available to us on the market. They really are designed for this heavy duty environment and importantly our operators like the way they handle.”

Six Powerscreen crushing and screening plants work in tandem at limestone quarry
Willowtree Site Services, established in 2001 and based in the north-east of England, is a contract crushing and screening specialist which is in partnership at Coxhoe Quarry in County Durham with owners and operators Hope Construction Materials, Britain’s leading independent producer of cement, concrete and aggregates. Willowtree has been a Blue Machinery Scotland customer since the company bought its first Powerscreen rinser a couple of years ago and, during the past few months, Willowtree has made a major investment with Blue purchasing six Powerscreen crushing and screening plants. These productive, crawler-mounted, mobile machines are now working the top bench at Hope’s Coxhoe Quarry, crushing, screening and stockpiling around 350,000 tonnes a year of size-specified limestone aggregates and agricultural lime. The Powerscreen set-up at Coxhoe is comprised of a Premiertrak 400 jaw and 1000 Maxtrak cone crusher, three Chieftain 2100X and one Warrior 1800 screening plants. Working largely in tandem, the Powerscreen array is producing 10mm, 14mm and 20mm aggregates and 20mm+ oversize from the quarried stone for the civil engineering and construction markets, plus 4mm lime for soil enhancement
14
for agriculture. The initial contract for Willowtree Site Services is for two years with potential for extending this further. The high capacity Powerscreen Chieftain 2100X and Warrior 1800 screening plants are well-established and site proven machines with output potentials up to 600 and 400 tonnes per hour respectively which, of course, depends on feed size, mesh size and material type. Agile and mobile on site, with heavy-duty crawler tracks and a removable pendant remote control system, both models have quick set-up times, easily accessible engines and screen media for maintenance convenience and screen changes, hydraulically folding conveyors and high-performance hydraulics for optimum output. Both Warrior and Chieftain models are equally at home screening and stockpiling aggregates, blasted rock, recyclables and mined materials such as processed ores and minerals.
Both Warrior and Chieftain models are equally at home screening and stockpiling aggregates, blasted rock, recyclables and mined materials such as processed ores and minerals.
The 1000 Maxtrak cone crusher can accept an 'all in' feed, thereby eliminating the need for pre-screening which would reduce the cubicity of the finished product. The feed hopper is equipped with a level probe which maintains choke feeding of the cone crusher, improving cubical shape and increasing fines production for ‘road-base’ applications.
The taper roller bearing design, with hydraulic setting, tramp release and unblocking system, ensures excellent productivity and ease of operation. Dust suppression sprays are included as standard to reduce environmental emissions. Adjustment can be made ‘on the run’ using touch button controls with direct read-out of closed side setting. The Premiertrak 400 pre-screen jaw crusher incorporates a fully independent high amplitude, hydraulically driven pre-screen with increased drop angle on the bottom deck to facilitate maximum throughput and capacity. Improved prescreened material flow is achieved by an enlarged discharge opening from the under chute which allows faster movement of pre-screened material to bypass the crushing chamber. Commenting on the Powerscreen machines, Willowtree’s founder and owner James McLeod said “We looked at the available equipment on the market and closely consulted our customer’s highly experienced quarry manager at Coxhoe and we both came to the conclusion that the Powerscreen products would be best for the job in hand. Also, we at Willowtree have enjoyed an excellent relationship with Blue Machinery Scotland and this, combined with the reputation, build quality and productivity of the Powerscreen machines, made our choice easy.” 15
Earthworm PLC purchase Doppstadt AK435 Earthworm PLC are an organics recycling specialist based in Daventry, Northamptonshire where they recycle food, garden and wood waste into industry approved quality compost. This compost is then sold to garden centres, amenity suppliers and the farming community.
Working with local authorities, waste carriers, supermarkets and other food producers, Earthworm offer a sustainable method of organic waste disposal as an alternative to landfill. They are chosen and trusted by their clients because their system is costefficient and environmentally sound. In the UK we throw away 15 million tonnes of food in the UK every year. Almost 50% of this comes from our homes, and more than half of it is food that could have been eaten. The Waste & Resources Action Programme (Wrap) says that as consumers we are in effect dumping one in three bags of shopping straight in the bin. Meaning each household throws away a costly £250 to £400 worth of food a year. At the Earthworm site in Daventry they use the “VCU In vessel composting technology” to break down the organic waste on their site. The VCU system operates on a ‘plug flow’ principle allowing for a feed of mixed food and green waste into the top of the vessel, with compost harvested from the bottom. Processing times within the vessel vary but are typically between four and seven days. Heat is generated naturally within the vessel as a result of the metabolic activity of the microbes that break down the waste at the lower levels of the chamber.
16
To help process the green and food waste arising to the site Earthworm purchased an AK435 from Blue Machinery (Central) which was bought to replace an existing shredder for their site. Earthworm were seeking increased reliability and reduced downtime from their material processing machines so the Doppstadt shredder was an ideal choice for the job. The AK435 is used in conjunction with an existing Doppstadt SM518 trommel screen on site and is proving to be a winning combination for Earthworm. Ben Prior from Earthworm commented “The team at Blue has been integral to the smooth running of our facility at Daventry from day one. The service that they provide goes well beyond the point of sale and we are pleased to have a trusted supplier to turn to for our plant and machinery needs.”

Northern Star turns Blue Highlands based Pat Munro Ltd have recently installed a recycling system from equipment manufacturers BlueMAC to revolutionise the waste side of their business. Established in 1945 with a predominantly quarrying background, the company have evolved over the years to become a multi-disciplined organisation which specialises in quarrying, civils, construction, haulage and waste. Over the years, Pat Munro has naturally progressed into other markets which have synergy with their primary aggregate business. In the late 1990’s, the company started off in the waste sector and have developed this arm of the business to its current levels, processing over 60,000tpa. Around this time, the landfill opportunities in the Highlands were no longer available, meaning increased recycling onsite and a long haul of landfill materials down to the central belt. With increasing environmental legislations within Scotland on carbon footprint and zero waste, Pat Munro Ltd decided to radically change their approach to their waste business. As a result, the new state of the art MRF facility from BlueMAC has been installed to enable the company to dramatically improve their recovery rates whilst greatly reducing the detrimental haulage
018 18
factor. Commenting on the strategy of the new MRF, PM Waste Manager, Veronica Symonds, added “In our new MRF facility, we feel that we are able to revolutionise the waste sector in the Highlands. The plant has a future proofed design, enabling us to process greatly increased volumes going forward. Whilst this new facility will give us a real commercial advantage in the local market, we intend to engage with the other waste services providers, in the area, with a view to working together to provide the best, and most cost-effective, waste solutions for the Highland area.” The new plant consists of a 6m feeder with incline belt taking the material to a BlueMAC 25-70 trommel. The robust trommel with maintenance friendly design is 7m long with a 2.5m drum. From the trommel, 40mm minus fine material is removed to reduce the volume of the waste stream and make for easier sorting. The oversize material then travels from the trommel to a 90 degree change of direction at which point the material passes an air separator which removes the light fractions. The remaining oversize
material then enters the sorting cabin with its 5 double sided bays for the safe removal of recyclables. For operatives safety, the cabin is fitted with industrial standard fittings such as lighting, heaters, windows and emergency stop cords. Once all recyclables have been removed the remaining waste passes a magnet for the safe removal of ferrous metals prior to the left over hard core to be stockpiled in the end bay. Further commenting on the new installation Veronica Symonds said “We are delighted with the installation of our new plant, the BlueMAC team have been first class from concept through to turning the system on. The initial performance has been excellent and we look forward to developing our business on the back of this new facility.”
