When Blue and Powerscreen Go Under the Microscope, We Come Out on Top!

Towards the end of 2014 Blue Southern, along with various other competitors, were asked to tender for the supply of two new machines to JPE Earth and Aggregate Solutions located in Brownhills, Staffordshire. JPE has steadily grown its business over the last 25 years and has recently been involved in many of the leading projects in the Midlands area, including the M6 Toll Road development. Previously the company was pre-screening materials that were coming in for landfill, and carefully selecting the 6F5 and Type 1. In order to meet increased demand however for these products, the company were firstly looking for a machine that would be more efficient and offer increased output. The second application for which a machine was required was the crushing of washed cobblestone for aggregates of -22mm. The company currently had a Powerscreen Maxtrak 1000 feeding a 3 deck, 4 way split screener producing a -6mm, 6mm – 14mm 14mm – 22mm and oversized +22mm, generating a total throughput 70 MTPH. Even though the current Powerscreen crusher was doing a good job they now needed a more efficient machine offering increased capacity, again to meet increasing customer demand for the finished material. As always the objective of Blue was to show their commitment to supplying the right machine and dedication to supporting the customer through the buying process and beyond. To help achieve that, Blue Southern contacted Powerscreen, enlisting their assistance and in doing so creating a formidable team. With regard to the screener, Blue and Powerscreen took the time to really understand the needs and objectives of JPE as well as the concerns that Steve Birch had about Powerscreen, which was price. We also knew however that

02

Steve was a businessman, meaning his main focus would be on cost per tonne. Blue therefore recommended the Warrior 2100 and while this was up to 25% more expensive than some of the competitor machines, it was also 50% more efficient even on difficult materials during the trials. The fact that this would equate to considerable cost per tonne savings over a 5 year period meant that it was the machine that would deliver the highest return on investment. Steve Birch commented, “A lot of the machines from various suppliers were brought in and thoroughly tested to give everyone an opportunity to impress. The Warrior 2100 however outperformed them all by some distance. Not only does the machine offer exceptional output, but we also found it does more applications on the site, including the screening of rock sand which would usually have required the hiring or purchase of another machine. The fact that the machine is getting ahead of itself in its traditional role by producing 360 tonne per hour means it can be freed up to carry out other tasks within the quarry.”

A lot of the machines from various suppliers were brought in and thoroughly tested to give everyone an opportunity to impress. The Warrior 2100 however outperformed them all by some distance. - Steve Birch To demonstrate Powerscreen’s and Blues capabilities for the crushing application Mark McMullan from Blue Southern, along with Tony Weir from Powerscreen created an indepth presentation and organised a demonstration of the new Maxtrak 1150, identifying the benefits over the current machine at the site, the expected output and the quality of the finished product.

Mark commented “We knew it had to be impressive due to the fact that we were up against numerous other competitor machines. The trials demonstrated some significant cost per tonne savings for JPE with the output on approximately 18mm materials reaching 170 TPH, more than double what they were achieving previously.” “Another key feature of the 1150 Maxtrak is its versatility. The standard medium course liners can be easily swopped out with fine liners thanks to the common upper frame design. This allows JPE to re-feed their +22mm product into the fine bowl and generate the smaller sized aggregates that are in demand.” In the end, all the hard work put in by those involved in the tender paid off as both the Warrior 2100 and the Maxtrak 1150 were chosen by JPE. To achieve both pieces of business after such an in-depth examination and testing process is huge testament to the quality of Powerscreen products, as well as the knowledge and commitment of Mark McMullan and the team at Blue Southern.

New Offices Raise the Bar at Blue Fuchs and Blue Southern An £800,000 refurbishment of both the Blue Fuchs and Blue Southern offices in Portishead has created a state of the art facility and impressive working environment for all the staff at the site. With work starting at the end of 2014 and continuing for 3 months, the offices, workshop and welfare facilities for the engineers were officially opened on February 2nd 2015. The site also contains a sizeable demonstration area for the machinery, as well as a refurbishment bay where equipment can be repaired and restored. Terry Hughes, MD at Blue Fuchs commented, “Everyone at Fuchs and Southern, along with the owners of the group are delighted with the result. Not only is the whole facility extremely impressive for customers when they visit but it has been designed in a way to better suit their requirements. Whether they are looking for a demonstration or a refurb to an existing machine, we can do it all at this one location.” Like the Blue Southern division of the business, Blue Fuchs are expanding rapidly year on year. The new site puts the companies in an ideal position to take advantage of market growth within the various sectors in which they trade.

Blue Arrive in Ireland Due to the strengthening markets in Ireland, Blue are proud to announce the launch of their latest group company, Blue Ireland. Headed by Liam and Ronan Brophy, both of whom have a wealth of experience in both domestic and global markets, the company is looking to tap in to an improving market in Ireland and continue the success of the Blue companies across the UK. Based in Portlaoise, to provide excellent access to all areas of the country, Blue Ireland boasts a new state of the art facility, perfectly positioning the business for future growth. With access to the world’s leading machinery, including Doppstadt, Terex Fuchs, Blue Mac and Hartl as well as an extensive range of spares, the company will look to continue the ethos of Blue Group by offering the best equipment backed with outstanding service and support. Commenting on the expansion into Ireland Liam Brophy stated, “The time was right for the expansion with the noticeable improvements in the Irish market, and this growth will no doubt create opportunities for the business. The Group has developed and invested heavily in its aftersales product support capabilities in the UK with an impressive off-theshelf stock-holding for spare parts and a team of fully trained

technical service engineers giving country-wide coverage. We are focused on ensuring that this philosophy is carried over to Blue Ireland, building on Blue’s excellent reputation in the UK.” Although only launched in February this year, the business has already sold a number of machines and a BlueMAC plant. A Doppstadt DW 3060K Bio Power and a SM 720 trommel has been purchased by Greenacre Composting Enterprises Ltd, a longstanding Doppstadt customer in the country. Two new Terex Fuchs Material Handlers have been delivered. The first a MHL 250E to Waste Recovery Services Ltd for the handling of farm plastics and the second, a MHL 360E to the One51 Group to handle scrap. Furthermore, Walsh Waste in Galway have ordered a BlueMAC plant incorporating feeder, trommel, picking station and blower, which is to be delivered and installed in May this year to process skip waste at an estimated 20tph.

DW2060K Bio Power for Chambers Waste Management PLC For the past four decades, Chambers Waste Management PLC has built a strong reputation for delivering high quality valuefor-money services in the locality. Based in Guildford, Surrey, Chambers was established in 1969 by Peter Chambers, the current Chairman and Managing Director. In the intervening years Chambers Group has evolved into an integrated recycling, waste management and aggregates business, servicing a wide range of commercial and domestic customers. “We’ve invested heavily in equipment at our bases in Slyfield and Runfold (Surrey) to improve the range and quality of services that we’re able to offer” says Peter Chambers. As part of this investment, Chambers recently purchased a Doppstadt DW2060K Bio Power slow speed shredder. Based on past experience they chose Blue Machinery (London) Ltd to provide this equipment. In Peter’s words: “We purchased this shredder to provide our company with a flexible solution to shred a variety of products including, residual plastic, card, paper etc. that goes for fuel; wood, hard plastic before baling and green wastes, amongst others.” The DW2060K Bio Power shredder, with hydraulically controlled shredding comb, has been designed to adjust to different shredding tasks. The comb elements are secured by wedges, easily accessible from outside so allowing speedy replacement. Chambers like the flexibility of their shredder, which is used “to handle a lot of different products and the tracked chassis, to move easily around the yard.” This shredder is highly mobile, even in difficult terrain, thanks to the tracklaying chassis with two speeds, and using the optional feature which allows operation by remote control. Their past experience with Doppstadt machines, include having run an SM620K Trommel for some years, meant that Chambers know they are efficient, reliable and a worthwhile investment for their future investment plans. 07

Blue Grab Gold at the Powerscreen World Dealer Conference Fort Lauderdale was the stunning location for this year’s Powerscreen World Dealer Conference, meaning the Blue Team escaped temperatures around freezing point in the UK for much sunnier climes to attend the event in Florida… it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it.

08

56 delegates from Blue made the trip, including both staff and customers as did many of Powerscreen’s 120 strong worldwide dealership network. The first evening was all about meeting up and re-equating with old friends with many of the Powerscreen dealers having been associated with the brand for many years, including Blue. On day two the customers were whisked off for a day to remember in the Everglades while the dealers got down to more serious matters in the conference room. The focus was very much on the future and how Powerscreen had listened to their dealers over recent years. New Product Development was therefore an integral part of the day as the Powerscreen Team highlighted both key improvements to the existing range and some exciting new machines to be launched in 2015 and indeed the coming few years. The day also included a case study featuring Blue and their customer JPE located in Brownhills, Staffordshire.

Austin Carey, Blue Scotland accepts the award from Joe Cassidy, Regional Sales Manager at Powerscreen.

JPE went through an extensive comparison and testing process at the end of last year when they were looking to purchase both a crusher and a screener, before finally deciding on a Maxtrak 1150 and Warrior 2100 in preference to numerous other competitor machines that had been put to the test (read the full story on page 2). The evening consisted of an incredible boat trip for all attendees to the event with plenty of ‘Networking’ taking place due to it also being St Patrick’s Day. While not quite bright eyed and bushy tailed everyone was up early the following morning however for the trip to see the entire range of Powerscreen crushing and screening machines including live demonstrations on the new Premiertrak 600 Jaw Crusher, Maxtrak 1150 Cone Crusher and Warrior 600 Screener. The displays were incredibly impressive, and clearly had an impact on the Blue customers who attended, with over £1million worth of Powerscreen equipment being sold on the day by the various group companies. And then came the icing on the cake. At the evening's Dealer Awards Ceremony, Blue Central and Blue Southern both won ‘Highly Commended’ Awards with Blue Scotland taking the highest accolade, World Dealer of the Year for 2014. Considering the competition of 120 dealers across the globe and the size of Scotland in comparison to the areas other dealers trade within, it was an outstanding achievement for Austin Carey and his team.

BlueMAC MRF Installed for Murray Browns Murray Browns is an independent, family-owned company headquartered in Flixton, near Scarborough, owned and managed by Melvyn and James Brown. Serving the North Yorkshire region, the company has been established for over 41 years, providing a range of services, in addition to recycling and waste management, including skip hire, quarried and recycled aggregates, agricultural lime and the supply and spreading of fertiliser. A long-standing Blue Machinery Central customer who continues to be impressed by what Blue and its sister companies have to offer, Melvyn and James asked the engineers at BlueMAC to come up with a solution to their need for a future-proof MRF system. The ever increasing volumes of commercial and C&D waste materials that are being recycled by Murray Browns at their Flixton waste treatment centre necessitated the design, manufacture and installation of a bespoke materials recycling facility (MRF) to replace their old small recycling plant which, although giving sterling service for many years, was now in need of replacement. Blue Machinery Central teamed up with sister company BlueMAC to provide the answer. Melvyn and James report that the plant is performing very well indeed and James Brown commented “We’d been to see some of the first BlueMAC MRFs operating in London and were extremely impressed by the design, build quality and performance.”

10

We’d been to see some of the first BlueMAC MRFs operating in London and were extremely impressed by the design, build quality and performance. - James Brown He continued “What we saw and heard from the owners of the plants convinced us that a BlueMAC system was the best option and, of course, our long relationship with Blue Machinery Central made the choice that much easier. We are also aware of Blue’s industry leading after-sales service and spares back-up and this too was another positive influence on our decision making process.” The BlueMAC MRF at the Murray Browns premises has been designed and tailor-made not only to produce the required specific clean saleable recyclables but also to fit neatly in the 7 acre site and allow materials handling to be carried out safely and efficiently around the new plant. Material flow is continuous throughout the working day, with the incoming C&D and commercial waste being conveyed and processed through a series of compatible, linked machines, including two bespoke picking stations and a fines clean-up line. A generously sized feed hopper receives the incoming waste with an incline conveyor feeding the prime screening

trommel, which separates to 50mm. The resulting fines are collected beneath the trommel drum and then conveyed to an IFE Flip Flow screener, which is preceded by an overband magnet to extract ferrous metals. The Flip Flow screener produces smaller fines to 10mm with any oversize material passing on to a General Kinematics de-stoner which separates the heavies from the lights, the latter being blown by an air knife and collected in a lights cage. The residual heavy material is collected from this process and conveyed to a single bay picking station for manual separation and selection, which removes required materials via a chute to a concrete storage bay below. Oversize material from the trommel (>50mm) is conveyed to second picking station, this time featuring six bays, where recyclable materials such as wood, plastics, cardboard, paper etc. are sorted, manually removed and dropped by chute to storage bays beneath the station. The picked material is then conveyed via an overband magnet for ferrous removal to a blower which separates the lights from the heavies with the residual material being stockpiled in a bay at the end of the plant. Murray Browns is processing in the region of 18 tonnes an hour of C&D waste through their new BlueMAC MRF and the plant has been designed with capacity to spare as the volumes are destined to increase in the coming years. Murray Browns estimates that in excess of 90% is being recycled and aims to improve even further on this already impressive figure.

BlueMAC Reports Growth and Plans for Future Investment

It is just over two years since BlueMAC Manufacturing burst on to the market, bringing a refreshing approach to the design and manufacture of bespoke recycling plants. BlueMAC combines the extensive market knowledge and enviable reputation of the Blue Group, with the technological expertise of DMAC Engineering, the well-established and respected manufacturer based in Coalisland, Co. Tyrone. The resulting joint venture has swiftly become a key player in the production of tailor-made recycling plants and associated equipment under the BlueMAC brand. The company reports a gratifying growth since inception, with 32 complete recycling plants already installed and many more in the pipeline. Customer satisfaction has been unanimous and the client list is comprised of both independent recyclers and large national groups. 2015 sales are certain to exceed the first two years figures by a long way and, in addition, BlueMAC has also recently developed and launched their Mobile Eddy Current AMS (All Metal Separator). This robust and efficient crawler-mounted machine is already a stock item at Blue Group’s various locations, with two models out on extensive field trials with customers.

We were always confident that we had found a good formula for success and are delighted that the first 24 months or so have more than justified that confidence. - Pat McGeary

BlueMAC offers the recycling industry innovative modular products that are robustly manufactured at a cost effective price. BlueMAC’s turnkey in-house manufacturing process ensures total control of cost, design, components, engineering, quality and after-sales product support, overseeing each project from initial enquiry to installation and commissioning. Now, with the order books bulging and more innovative recycling machines already in development, BlueMAC announces that, during 2015, the company will continue to develop the new offices at their extensive 7,300m² manufacturing facility. Alongside this will be a recruitment campaign to ensure that the optimum in quality engineering and support personnel can be maintained as the planned and rational growth programme develops over the coming months. Pat McGeary from Blue Group and Oliver McShane of BlueMAC are extremely enthusiastic about their plans for BlueMAC. “We were always confident that we had found a good formula for success and are delighted that the first 24 months or so have more than justified that confidence” says Pat McGeary. “Our plans for the factory allow us to maintain our growth and develop new plants and equipment for our range,” adds Oliver McShane “whilst ensuring that we can build on the engineering quality that has been such a vital factor in our success since we launched in 2013.” With expansion like this under way after a mere 24 months, it is clear that the future is very bright for the team at BlueMAC.

1000th Machine from Blue Machinery Scotland Blue Machinery Scotland proudly reports that the 1000th piece of equipment sold by the company has gone to their long-standing customer, Central Demolition of Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire. In what can only be described as a delightful coincidence, Central Demolition was the very first customer for Blue Machinery Scotland when it was incorporated, purchasing a Powerscreen Powergrid 17 years ago! The latest addition to Central’s large, modern fleet of demolition, recycling and materials handling equipment follows in the footsteps of the original 1998 purchase, being another Powerscreen machine, this time a Premiertrak 400 mobile jaw crusher. Central Demolition is a multidisciplined organisation specialising in demolition and dismantling, licensed asbestos removal, earthmoving, site clearance, plant and tipper hire and recycling. Formed in 1993, Central Demolition has evolved to become a leading national organisation in its specialist fields, with broad expertise in all its activities. The company reckons that it is reclaiming at least 90%95% from the thousands of tonnes of crushed demolition waste, inert materials, soils and skip waste fines at its Bonnybridge recycling station. Incoming raw waste materials for recycling and washing are brought in

from Central’s own demolition and site clearance contracts as well as other sources throughout Scotland and North East England. Central Demolition has always placed great emphasis on investing in the best possible plant and equipment for its various operations and has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Blue Machinery Scotland and sister company Blue Fuchs when it comes to sourcing recycling plants and materials handling equipment. The latest investment, the Premiertrak 400 pre-screen jaw crusher, is a compact yet powerful and productive machine incorporating a fully independent high amplitude, hydraulically driven prescreen with increased drop angle on the bottom deck to facilitate maximum throughput and capacity. Improved pre-screened material flow is achieved by an enlarged discharge opening from the under chute which allows faster movement of pre-screened material to bypass the crushing chamber. On delivery of this 1000th machine, Blue Machinery invited Central Demolition’s Managing Director,

Ross Craig to join them to celebrate this milestone. Mr Craig said “Both businesses have developed and grown over the years and we have built up an excellent working relationship with Blue Machinery Scotland during this time which has benefited both parties.” He continues “Blue’s range of top class distributorships, combined with after sales product support which we find to be second-to-none, means it is easy for us to source capital equipment from them in the knowledge that we’ll get value-for-money quality products with superb back-up…and it doesn’t get much better than that!” Blue Machinery Scotland’s Managing Director Austin Carey responded by saying “We have always realised that a key to the success of our business is a good relationship with customers. I would like to emphasise how much we value the loyalty shown to us by organisations such as Central Demolition and our many other clients throughout Scotland and the NorthEast of England, which has helped us to achieve this 1000th machine milestone.”

Day Aggregates take New Fuchs RHL350E The first of two Fuchs RHL350E material handlers was recently delivered into Day Aggregates Battersea Depot, right in the centre of London, for the purpose of unloading rail wagons containing various sizes of aggregate supplied by the company to the construction industry across the UK. This long-standing business dates back to the Second World War when John Day delivered coal to London’s power stations. Today the company is still owned and run by the Day family with 3 generations currently actively involved in the business. Now with 19 sites located across Southern England, the business continues to provide a personal touch to its customers, even though it currently supplies some 4 million tonnes of material to the construction industry annually. Stuart Holmes, Plant Manager for Day Group Ltd said, “Previously we have been using a converted excavator to unload the wagons coming in via the railhead. We took the decision however to purchase a re-handling machine that was more fit for purpose. While the excavator did the job in essence, the type of hydraulics system contained within the machine was designed to dig rather than re-handle material.” Stuart

continued, “Whilst the excavator may have a quicker hydraulic operation the Fuchs operation is much more relaxed, which reduces operator fatigue as well as machine wear and tear. Additionally, the extra machine stability allows the Fuchs to use a larger grab than the previous excavator (2.5m³ instead of 2m³) and coupled with the improved fuel consumption makes the Fuchs a good choice for the operation at this location.” The RHL350E offers an operating weight of up to 37.5 tonnes with Day Aggregates opting for the 2.5 cubic metre clam shell bucket for increased lift capacity. The machines have been specifically designed within the Special Application Centre at Terex Fuchs, Germany with a 10m boom, reduced from the standard 16m, due to the close proximity of the wagons they will be unloading. Being the tracked version it ensures mobility

on the challenging terrain next to the rail tracks. Furthermore the extrawide track gauge guarantees stability even when the heavy loads taken from the trains are moved in swift manoeuvres. A high-output 160-kW turbo diesel engine and powerful hydraulics operating in a notably efficient dual-circuit system mean that even these heavier loads are handled with precision and speed. The 3 metre undercarriage also offers outstanding stability in even the toughest conditions. Day Aggregates considered a number of material handling solutions with other companies, but elected to use Blue Machinery for both their proven after-sales support in terms of parts availability and service and their experience in providing bespoke, specialist handling equipment.

Lowmac Recycling takes UK’s First Terex-Fuchs MHL250E Long-Reach Materials Handler Following the introduction of the new compact, long-reach Terex-Fuchs MHL250E material handler at last September’s RWM Show, Blue Fuchs, reports that Lowmac Recycling of Ayrshire has taken delivery of the first of this model to be sold in the country. This versatile wheeled machine is now working at Lowmac’s Ayr facility, sorting material and loading trucks. The company has another larger Terex-Fuchs material handler – an MHL320 – which is based at their Irvine headquarters where it is loading a Doppstadt DW 3060 Bio shredder. All these machines were sourced from Blue Group member companies Blue Fuchs and Blue Machinery Scotland. Lowmac Recycling was founded in 1973, starting life trading in secondary metals. In 1981, the company moved into waste management with the introduction of skip and roll-on-off hire for household, commercial and industrial waste collection. In 1994, Lowmac opened a new purpose-built waste treatment site in Irvine from where the company now provides a large range of environmental and recycling services. These include ferrous and non-ferrous metals recycling, ELV, WEEE collection and processing, green waste processing, wood and general waste recycling, reclamation of recycled aggregates and soils and the production of

biofuel. Lowmac also produces and supplies a wide range of building, civil engineering and landscaping recycled products, from haul-road materials to landfill cover, screened soils and sand, composting and soil improvement material. Other services provided include crane, excavator and loading shovel hire, demolition, haulage and environmental consultancy. Lowmac Recycling has been a Blue Group customer for over seventeen years and, with this latest addition to their modern recycling plant holding, continues this long-standing allegiance. The new MHL250E is a wheeled, long-reach, hydraulic materials handler in the 15 tonnes class with compact dimensions that is designed and built specifically for the recycling market. The four point hydraulic outriggers version chosen by Lowmac offers complete stability with a 2.10 tonnes load at the 9m maximum reach. A fuel-miserly, low emissions engine generates 85kW, giving the MHL250E power to spare for most recycling and reclamation applications. Additionally, the comfortable, fully instrumented,

sound-insulated cab (ROPS certified) features hydraulic elevation, providing the operator with a 5.2m raised line of sight for optimum load and site visibility during the working cycles. Commenting on his company’s new plant acquisition, Managing Director Kenny Smith said “This is proving to be a versatile machine for us and is performing very well on its sorting and loading tasks. It is nimble, quick and precise, and the elevating cab is an excellent feature for safe operation, especially when loading high-sided trucks. As always, we have been extremely well served by both Blue Fuchs and Blue Machinery Scotland and once again, our long association and past experience with the excellent Terex-Fuchs brand made the purchasing decision all the easier!”
