Happy 50th Anniversary to the John Wade Group Longstanding Blue Scotland customer, John Wade Group recently celebrated their 50th anniversary at a lavish event held at John’s home near Sedgefield. Blue Director Austin Carey and Sales Manager Barry McCarron attended along with 200 other guests made up of friends, family and close business colleagues. Back in 1958 when John Wade left school at 15 years old, even he probably didn't anticipate going on to start and develop a business that would become one of the most successful aggregates and waste management companies in the UK, and own a number of highly successful race horses to boot.

constantly analysed the market, which resulted in the business expanding into waste management in recent times. Today the company incorporates 3 key sites at Aycliffe and Darlington totalling an impressive 80 Hectres along with 200 Hectres of farm land and employs 160 people in the local area.

His early career involved repairing and operating plant equipment before starting the business which incorporated plant hire and small contract work, involving demolition, earth moving and re-seeding. The selling of quarry products then followed as he collected stone from the Old Town Quarry at Middridge near Shildon and distributed it to local businesses.

Over the last 15 years John and Blue have developed an extremely strong bond, as both businesses have evolved and become ever more successful. The John Wade Group has purchased over 10 machines from Blue over that time, across both the Doppstadt and Powerscreen ranges.

In 1972 John acquired his first quarry, Stonegrave Aggregates, situated near Aycliffe Village. The quarry soon started to supply the region with dolomite magnesium limestone, on which many of the houses in the Darlington area are built on. Like all successful entrepreneurs John

“It’s been a real privilege to work with John over the years, and to be invited to celebrate his 50th year in business with him and his team”, commented Austin. “From myself and everyone at Blue Scotland we’d like to wish them ongoing success in the future.”

Eugene Donnelly and Brian Maxwell ride again for Blood Bikes Blue’s Charity for 2015 is Blood Bikes. Blood Bikes is the informal name for a type of voluntary emergency medical service in the United Kingdom and Ireland, providing motorcycle courier services to hospitals and other healthcare providers and helping with the transport of urgent blood, tissue and organs. The Charity relies entirely on fundraising and volunteers and has now extended its service transporting mothers to Neonatal Intensive Care Units to enable them to spend as much time as possible with their babies whilst in care. Eugene and Brian, both Group Directors at Blue, once again this year rode part of the route, from London to Bristol, as part of this fundraising cycle ride. This latest challenge is to get the bespoke Harvey Nichols baton from one store to the next, with the aim of raising enough to fund another purpose built BMW vehicle and Blue sponsored BMW motorcycle. This will help expand this life changing service into another city in the UK. Blue will support Blood Bikes by promoting the charity at this year’s Lord Mayors Show on Saturday November 14th. Bikes used by this service, funded by Blue’s charitable activities, will be parading the streets of London in the company of some of the major UK charities and our own fire-breathing Blue Fuchs dragon.

Case study: Eastern Waste Disposal Located in Brightlingsea, near Colchester, Eastern Waste Disposal - (EWD) - is a family run business with three generations currently undertaking an active role in the day to day running of the business. Established in 1997 by Directors Danny and Simon Carter, EWD started life as a small skip hire company, growing substantially over the subsequent years and is now able to offer a wide variety of waste and recycling services to its customers. These include skip, roll on/off and tipper hire, tyre recycling, recycling of road sweepings, manufacture of biomass from waste wood streams and a wide variety of other associated services. In an effort to divert maximum volumes of waste from landfill, EWD approached Blue to provide them with a suitable commercial shredder, to assist in the manufacture of Refuse Derived Fuel used in the production of heat and power. The shredder would be used in the shredding of commercial and industrial waste, which could then be added to the residual light plastic waste being extracted from the construction and demolition skips coming in to the site. The resulting shredded material would then be baled and wrapped before being exported for energy production.

EWD had developed a relationship with Blue London over recent years, having purchased a high speed Doppstadt AK230 in September 2014, which is shredding both wood for biomass and organic material for restoration purposes. It wasn’t a case of just signing the deal for a new Doppstadt with Blue London however, as the Company also wanted to look at our competitors, to ensure that whichever machine they ultimately chose would deliver the greatest return on investment. It is when Blue and the equipment they supply are placed under the microscope, that the qualities and benefits become clear. Ryan Copperthwaite, the Blue Sales Manager spent time understanding the objectives of EWD and exactly what they wanted the machine to achieve. Based on this information Ryan proposed the Doppstadt DW2060k Bio, which offers wear resistant steel teeth, an automatically opening comb for protection against contaminants, large access doors for ease of maintenance and the most

Our engineer at Blue, knows the machines so well that he can often provide advice over the phone virtually eliminating downtime for the machine and with spare parts. advanced, yet user-friendly, control system on the market. Furthermore Ryan presented clear figures to illustrate the commercial viability of the machine, demonstrating that the cost per tonne of waste produced, taking in to account capital outlay, the running costs and depreciation, was considerably lower on the Doppstadt than any of its competitors. With these unequivocal figures, the relationship with Blue London and the proven quality of Doppstadt machinery within the site, the decision swiftly became an easy one for the management team at EWD. Site Manager Dave Jackson commented, “Previously, the notoriously hard to handle commercial and industrial waste left after recycling, was going to landfill. Now, with the help of the Doppstadt, over 95% is being converted in to a material that can be baled and sent out to the continent for the creation of energy. Not only does that therefore save us costs and deliver an additional revenue stream, it is also better for the environment, which is something that is very important to this business.” As always with Blue, it is not just about the initial sale. Simon Carter, Managing Director, also stated, “Our engineer at Blue, knows the machines so well that he can often provide advice over the phone virtually eliminating downtime for the machine and with spare parts, 99% of those ordered are delivered the next day. The service backup has been very good indeed.”

Erith Haulage seek additional revenue stream with the help of their new Powerscreen Chieftain 2100X The Erith Group is a private family owned business, founded in 1967. The company’s ethos then, as today, is one of quality of service and client satisfaction. They have grown to form a group of businesses whose primary business is to service the construction and related industries through its enabling services comprising of demolition, asbestos removal, remediation, earthworks, concrete works, waste recycling and haulage. Part of their business plan is to seek better value from its products and additional revenue streams from its crushed product. Shaun Bean, Plant Manager, recently purchased a Powerscreen Chieftain 2100X specifically to achieve these aims. Pictured is their machine hard at work creating the single sized aggregates for their new sales markets. Sean said that ‘Historically Erith has been a customer of Blue’s because of the quality of their machines and the support provided by both the service team and Matt Scott, Area Manager’. When this requirement arose he turned to Blue to fulfil his needs. The machine has been in operation now for a couple of months and Erith are very pleased with the results from their investment.

We've seen the future, and it is orange 50 years ago the Doppstadt Family attended a local exhibition with a machine built by Werner Doppstadt, which had been designed and built to effectively cultivate the fields and forests around the family farm. The objective at the local event was to generate an additional revenue stream by leasing out the machine to local farmers.

Over the following two days it was all about machines themselves with factory tours commencing every 20 minutes in a variety of languages to illustrate the technology and investment that has been made to ensure the precision manufacture of Doppstadt equipment. This includes a recent 5million Euro outlay on four milling machines, including the largest CTX Delta 4000TC model costing €2 million alone.

What they didn’t expect was several offers to purchase the machine, with one farmer returning with a briefcase full of Deutsche Mark to help secure the machines immediate purchase. Clearly the engineering capabilities of the Doppstadt family were evident even on that first machine. Today the company exports to over 40 different countries across the world and its main site, located in Calbe, Germany is over 220,000m2 in size. It is here that the recent Doppstadt Expo took place to celebrate the companies 50th Anniversary. Starting on June 24th with a press day, attracting journalists from all over Germany and across Europe, this was followed by a launch event in the evening where the Doppstadt dealers and many of their customers came together for a celebration of the company’s growth and success, as well as a presentation from Ferdinand Doppstadt on future strategy.

Doppstadt’s new Dopp Lock system which allows for four different tooth sizes from “S” to “XL” to be used in one machine.

Of course there were also the tours of the 100 machines on display, of which an incredible 40 were performing live demonstrations. What is clear to see is that Doppstadt’s future plans include the development of strategic alliances with other leading environmental technology businesses. Two such examples being Gunther GmbH and Westeria. Gunther’s splitter technology has been incorporated into a number of Doppstadt machines including the H2 and larger F3. The patented screen system on these machines can separate notoriously difficult screen materials, including industrial and organic waste in to three fractions.

Blue will be looking to demonstrate this technology at RWM in September, so make sure you come and see what it’s all about. You can also see a short video of the technology in action by scanning the QR code. Westeria’s Windsifter technology, which will be incorporated within the new Doppstadt WS200 K-AT, separates the materials in to three fractions depending on their density. Again Blue plan to have an example of this technology at RWM 2015 so come and see us at stand V160 in hall 5. It wasn’t just the new technology which Doppstadt has incorporated in to their machines, there had also been plenty of product development across their existing range. Again the objective was clear, which is not only to improve performance but also keep the mechanics simple. Simple to operate and to maintain. A good example of this is Doppstadt’s new Dopp Lock system which allows for four different tooth sizes from “S” to “XL” to be used in one machine. The tooth row change is possible without specialist tools thus reducing the maintenance and wear costs. Furthermore the new resistant re-shredding system ‘Limiter’ incorporated within the DW series prevents oversize particles in the output material. Across all the offices, 154 members of staff and customers attended the event from Blue, all of whom were incredibly impressed with what they saw. Doppstadt’s new philosophy is ‘Fit for Future’ and when looking, not only the developments at the Expo, but the complete focus on continued innovation, you can’t help but feel that the claim has merit. A new Windsifter and Warrior 1400x for Peak Recycling Run and owned by three brothers, Richard, Ken and John Martin, Peak Waste Recycling Skip Hire, situated in Ashbourne and the surrounding areas, are Derbyshire's largest privately owned waste management company. The core business is the hiring of bins and skips to collect general waste, which is then processed on site, baled and sent to waste to energy plants. While the plant currently operates at an impressive 95% to 98% recycle rate, the company’s ambitious objective of zero to landfill and the introduction of the new landfill tax on trommel fines, meant these fines had to be cleaned up to make the lower tax and meet the aims of the business. Due to a working relationship going back over 20 years between the two organisations, Peak Waste contacted Blue Machinery Central to see what recommendations they could make to help solve this notoriously tricky problem. Due to its highly aggressive screen box, Conor McVeigh Sales Manager at Blue suggested the Warrior 1400X screener, feeding in to a Westeria Air Basic Windsifter. The equipment works on the principle of screening to specific sizes, then using air density to separate the heavy inert stone material from the light RDF material. Firstly it is important to screen the material to a size that will eliminate

08

the majority of non-inert material so that the fines will pass a Loss on Ignition (LOI) test, and qualify for the lower rate of landfill tax. The material is then presented to the windsifter in an effective manner so that efficient separation can take place. The oversize material is split into heavy and light so the heavy fraction can be recycled as an aggregate and the lights into the existing WTE fuel stream. Thus transforming an otherwise waste material into three products. The results were outstanding with the Westeria producing 20 tonnes per day of clean stone from the general waste trommel fines. Beforehand this would have been adding weight and baled with the RDF material, however the recycled aggregate is now sold, so adding an additional revenue stream to the business as well as improving the quality of the waste to energy product. Commenting on the machines, Peak Waste co-owner Richard Martin stated, “With the management having a hands on feel for the business we have worked with all types of machinery

over the years. We could tell by looking over the Powerscreen 1400 and Westeria Air Basic how well made the machines were and that they would be easy to maintain. With us not having much room on site the compactness of the setup suited us very well. When we did run material through them we were astounded at how good the end product was compared to others we had tried. We have now found a simple, effective solution to solve our major problem and most importantly save our business a lot of money.” Sales Manager at Blue Central, Conor McVeigh, added, “Due to ever changing European legislation, as well as continuous new EA and government rulings, waste management businesses are forced to constantly evolve in order to solve the numerous challenges that arise as a result. Due to the fact that we work with so many companies across the UK and Ireland, we’ve built up extensive knowledge of what works in a variety of situations and across differing applications. Which means we are in the perfect position to help our customers solve any problems that arise from these legislative changes.”

A Doppstadt first for Doppstadt’s biggest! In terms of the machines most recently added to the CRJ fleet, the Doppstadt SM 518 can screen off even the most difficult materials without any problems due to its 5m long and 1.8m diameter drum. This offers a screening surface of 22.5m2 with drums being easily interchangeable to separate product of between 8mm and 100mm depending on mesh size. The load-sensing material feed optimises the efficiency of the machine and allows for the large screening service and impressive throughput. Add this to everything you’d expect for a Doppstadt machine, including ease of maintenance, product longevity and high resale value and you have a very impressive piece of equipment.

CRJ Services Ltd continue to increase their Doppstadt Fleet with the purchase of two new Doppstadt SM518 plus machines. The first in the UK. They have also taken a new AK510 BioPower high speed shredder with the landmark serial number of 1001, meaning Doppstadt cross the threshold of over 1000 machines sold in the mid-size AK Series. CRJ started back in 1999 when Rob Symons, Lee Carter and Kevin Jones saw an opportunity to diversify from their farming operations to organics recycling for the local authorities in Cheshire. With a successful track record of supplying local farms with soil improver generated from the recycled compost product, CRJ were ideally placed to secure the green waste contracts for the councils. The business still processes waste today, working in close partnership with other local waste transfer stations and processors, however the business has also diversified into the machine rental market. Initially using the recycling equipment utilised by the business, this arm of the company soon expanded in to other sectors. Today CRJ’s fleet of over 70 screens,

shredders, windshifters, picking stations and magnets, many of which being purchased from Blue Central, can facilitate all types of waste management businesses right across the UK and has helped develop a strong working relationship between Blue and CRJ. CRJ Director, Kevin Jones highlighted this enduring affiliation between the companies when he commented, “Blue represent the market leading manufacturers and they have an after sales infrastructure which is better than everyone else in the market. Parts availability and stock holding is excellent and always increasing. We know the equipment well and our own team of engineers and operators achieve quick turnaround times to reduce customer downtime.”

The AK510 isn’t picky, it will devour whatever comes between its teeth taking it down to between 30mm and 400mm depending on the basket fitted. The free swinging flail holders with separately replaceable wearing tools, as well as the quickly replaceable grinding system, which can be changed in less than 15 minutes are some of the features that set this machine apart. Rob Symonds, company Director at CRJ commented on the machines, “The Doppstadt SM Series are the best trommel screens on the market and have been consistently for many years. They are of a high build quality that gives us comfort in resale values and have the versatility to work well in a variety of places and applications. The AK Series is again the most versatile machine on the market that can do almost any wood waste or green waste application to a high standard. They are easy to operate and maintain as well as transport and set-up.”

Day Aggregates take new Fuchs RHL350E In the early 1990’s there wasn’t a ship to be seen in Rye Wharf East Sussex as the once bustling dock lay dormant and dilapidated. Fast forward, or should I say full steam ahead, to 2015 and it is a very different story with all kinds of shenanigans going on. The ships are back, arriving at the wharf on a daily basis carrying goods such as talc, wheat and stone from countries as far afield as China. You may also be able to do some star spotting with a number of Hollywood Blockbusters being filmed on the site over the last couple of years, including Monuments Men, directed by no other than George Clooney. On more run of the mill days Rye Wharf also offers vehicle storage facilities, warehousing and office space within this busy enterprise area, which covers an impressive quarter of a million square feet. The transformation of the area all started back in September 1996, when two entrepreneurial and George Clooney used Rye Wharf determined businessmen, Rod Chapman and Dick as a filming location for his movie Benge created Rastrum Ltd, which has been a major 'The Monuments Men' catalyst in the redevelopment of the Wharf. Initially the focus of the business was on the letting of the various commercial properties contained within the Wharf as well as the delivery and distribution of aggregates which were sold across the South East of England. It was to support this element of the business and specifically for the unloading of aggregates from the ships arriving at the quay that Rastrum purchased their first Terex Fuchs Material Handler, back in 2012 from Blue Group. And based on its outstanding performance, along with the support offered by Blue Fuchs throughout that initial purchase process and the ever strengthening relationship that has develop between the businesses, when an additional material hander was required, Rastrum didn’t even contemplate another machine or supplier other than Fuchs and Blue. Their latest addition is a MHL360, which, with an operating weight of between 43.5 and 48.8 tonnes and a reach of up to 18m is a veritable material handling powerhouse, and ideal for unloading ships like those coming in to Rye Wharf. A new hydraulic system design allows for outstanding handling capacity, yet the machine remains highly efficient. As with the entire Fuchs range the MHL 360 offers excellent stability thanks to its wide undercarriage base and reinforced steel structure, plus the BlueEVOLUTION® technology incorporated throughout the range means the MHL360 is ready for today’s strict emission controls. Commenting on the purchase, site manager Andrew Chapman commented, “The Terex Fuchs machines don’t just offer outstanding performance, they also give a lot of consideration to the driver. From the soundproof cab to the comfortable seat and full colour display, they make life easy, which no doubt has a positive influence on productivity.” Blue Fuchs Sales Manager Pat James also stated, “This mighty machine is perfect for this type of application, making light work of extracting the aggregates from the ships. We’ve been working with the team at Rastrum for some time now and it’s great to see that our machines are helping drive the business forward and restore commercial activity to this historic location.”

Getting muddy for a good cause Group Director, Eugene Donnelly and his two daughters Sarah and Mary Clair recently completed the gruelling Tough Mudder challenge at Henley on Thames to help raise money for the Nepal Earthquake Fund. The 12 mile course through extremely tough terrain and incorporating a number of challenging obstacles including ice pools, mud baths, vertical walls and even tear gas and electrical shocks is certainly not for the faint hearted. Not only did Eugene, Sarah and Mary Clair complete the course in an outstanding 3 hours, but they also raised over £1,000 for the very worthy cause. Eugene commented: “After seeing the devastation caused by the earthquake in Nepal, we felt, as a family that we wanted to raise some money to help those effected, plus we really like a challenge. It was tough going but worth it in the end with all the money we raised. I’d like to thank everyone who sponsored us and helped us achieve this total.”

Powerscreen 1000 Maxtrak for Aberdeen Crushing and Screening Blue Machinery Scotland has delivered a Powerscreen 1000 Maxtrak mobile cone crusher to long-standing customer Aberdeen Crushing and Screening. This new high-capacity processor joins a modern fleet of mobile machines which forms the backbone of the contract business Aberdeen Crushing and Screening has developed over the years. Aberdeen Crushing and Screening is part of the multi-discipline organization, Aberdeen Trailers Limited, based in Fyrie, Turriff, in Aberdeenshire. This independent, family owned company was formed in 1982 by owner Bill Miazek and currently offers a broad range of products and services throughout the region. Initially, the business was focused on commercial and domestic trailer manufacture, hire and repairs. Recognising clear openings in the market, Mr Miazek expanded and diversified his company over the years to include muckshifting, construction plant and equipment hire, quarried and recycled aggregates for civil engineering projects, a fleet of tippers and, through Aberdeen Crushing and Screening, a wellestablished contract service for this particular sector. The latest addition to the Aberdeen Crushing and Screening fleet continues the company’s principle of ensuring that plant and equipment in the fleet is modern, highly productive and very reliable, key attributes Bill Miazek is keen to emphasis. “Being in the market

014 14

for a cone crusher, we looked long and hard at what was available and came to the conclusion that you can’t touch the Powerscreen 1000 Maxtrak for both reliability and productivity.” He continues “The fuel efficiency provided by the machine’s direct drive was also a great benefit and we were also impressed with Blue Machinery’s knowledge and experience and the fact that they have an excellent reputation for after sales product support, with first class spares availability and a very mobile team of highly qualified field service engineers.” The Powerscreen 1000 Maxtrak features the well-proven and renowned 1000 Automax cone crusher technology at the core. With potential outputs of up to 230 tonnes per hour, depending on the material being processed, the crusher maintains excellent and consistent product shape with a high reduction ratio and has been specifically developed for the larger end user. Economical to operate, with a highly fuel efficient direct drive system, power is provided by the Tier 4i/Stage 3B and Tier 4F/Stage 4 Scania

DC9 83A diesel engine which develops 257kW. The 1000 Maxtrak cone crusher can accept an 'all in' feed, thereby eliminating the need for pre-screening which would reduce the cubicity of the finished product. The feed hopper is equipped with a level probe which maintains choke feeding of the cone crusher, thereby improving cubical shape and increasing fines production for ‘road-base’ applications. The taper roller bearing design, with hydraulic setting, tramp release and unblocking system, ensures excellent productivity and ease of operation and the metal detection system with integral contaminated material removal reduces the chance of tramp metal from entering the crushing chamber, which is particularly useful in recycling applications. Adjustment can be made ‘on the run’ using touch button controls with direct read-out of closed side setting. Dust suppression sprays to reduce environmental emissions are included as standard.

Westminster Waste take delivery of their first Doppstadt

As a Family run company and only set up in the spring of 2011, Westminster Waste has made great strides in the short time they have been in operation. Their aim is to build the finest Construction/Demolition waste recycling company in London with an ambitious zero landfill target. The next logical step for their business development as it continues to expand with increasing throughput of waste wood was to create a new wood shredding operation. For this they chose carefully from a wide range of options what they consider to be the most suitable wood shredder available, the Doppstadt AK510 tracked high speed shredder. “Its solid reputation for reliability, processing capacity, and ease of maintenance was what impressed me. said Dominic Moule, Managing Director. They now have capacity to grade and process their waste wood to recycle better and allowing for more efficiency and better achievement of their landfill aim. The combination of the best shredder, and the knowledge and support they require from Blue, and Matt Scott his local Area Manager, helped make this decision. Dave Tucker, Director, is pictured here with Matt and the new shredder just before his staff put the machine into operation.

EIS Waste Services take delivery of a Doppstadt DW 3060 EIS Waste Services, which is owned and operated by the Sharp family have recently taken delivery of a Doppstadt DW 3060 slow speed shredder from Blue Scotland. The Sharp family’s involvement in landfill operations and waste services stretches back to 1974. Following the sale of the original business, repeated enquires from historic customers who’d experienced exceptional service from the Sharp’s company led to the formation of EIS Waste Services in 1989 by second generation Neil Sharp Jnr. Today the business employs 92 staff and boasts a £1 million, 14 acre state of the art facility at Gallowhill, Checkbar, Nigg, incorporating a sizable waste transfer and recycling centre, modern office block and ample parking for its 27 strong HGV fleet. In terms of services offered, the company has a diverse daily remit from delivering single skips to private dwellings to multiple collections of bulk waste or recycling. The Doppstadt machine was purchased to pre-shred municipal waste, which is to be baled and sent to create energy, helping to divert 95% of all the waste that arrives at the plant away from landfill. This sterling work

and other initiatives at the plant has meant that EIS is the only company in the area to be accredited to Zero Waste Scotland’s Resource Sector Commitment. Commenting on the purchase of the Doppstadt machine, EIS Managing Director Neil Sharp stated, “We tested several machines to see which offered the greatest throughput and highest quality final material within this particular application. Not only did the Doppstadt shredder come out on top, but when you consider the re-sale value for this brand of machine and the

support you consistently receive from the team at Blue Scotland, it was the deal that made the most commercial sense.” One of the main benefits of the Doppstadt DW shredders is that they can be used across multiple applications from C&I, MSI and general waste to pallets and rigid plastics as well as the shredding of green waste. The machines steel shredder works on the single-shaft principle and has a hydraulically controlled shredding comb which protects the machine against contaminants, meaning it is ideally suited to the most difficult shredding tasks. The roller of the DW 3060 is 3m (9' 10") in length rotating at 31 rpm. This particular model has 21 roller teeth and 22 comb teeth which shred the materials. The machine is incredibly efficient due to its direct drive technology and is maintenance friendly with easily changeable teeth and large doors for ease of access to vital areas of the machine.

New Doppstadt shredder improves the process for Neath Port Talbot Recycling Ltd. Blue Machinery Southern has recently sold a Doppstadt DW306 Ceron Shredder with removable extra fine comb basket to Neath Port Talbot Recycling Ltd who are based at Port Talbot, Wales. The original plant has been operating since 2001 and currently processes 100,000 tonnes/annum of waste from Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend Borough Councils, converting approximately 42,000 tonnes of fuel into SRF which goes to the cement industry. Curbside recycling represents 25,000 tonnes per year, with the company acting as a handling agent for the council, distributing the sorted material out into the markets. The recycling operation deals with plastic, glass and cans, paper, cardboard, food and also green waste which is turned into compost.

Chris Roberts – General Manager, commented, “We had a lot of problems getting the waste material from A to B. Bringing the new Doppstadt shredder into the operation has improved the plant considerably, as we now process waste much faster than we ever did. This means that the waste is on-site for less time, and we don’t suffer the odour problems that we previously had.”

Chris continued, “We looked at three or four machines but the Doppstadt seemed the best in terms of durability in our hostile atmosphere. Back-up service was local, but it wasn’t a decision made on price; we didn’t go for the cheapest, we made our final decision based on the quality of the machine.”

Before the Doppstadt arrived an aged German shredder struggled with the work load, however since January 2014 things have changed significantly for the better.

Back-up service was local, but it wasn’t a decision made on price; we didn’t go for the cheapest, we made our final decision based on the quality of the machine. The process

“We had dealt with Blue machinery before as we rented a machine from them for a year, so we have worked together for the last three years. They have also helped us out with temporary hire equipment when we have needed it. We had problems with our old Trommel last October and again Blue stepped in to help and installed a by-pass conveyor for us. We are now purchasing a new Kiverco Trommel from them (as they are the UK distributors) which is being installed in May.” “We can now process 50 tons per hour with the new Doppstadt machine but obviously we have to taper that tonnage down to what an ageing plant can cope with. We have also fitted a different screen, so if we have a problem with our other shredders we can change the screen and although we would get a slower throughput we can take it down to 65mm to the end of the process, which isn’t ideal, but would work on a temporary basis and keep the process moving.”

The incoming waste feed is delivered to the reception and is shredded down to 250/300mm with any dirty metal removed and placed in a skip. When the waste is shredded down to 300mm it is then fed via a plate feeder onto conveyors and fed into a trommel which removes all the very fine material out (this is the only material the company landfill). The material then passes under magnets, an eddy current separator and two secondary shredders and is delivered over a wall into one of nine fuel prep tunnels which have a capacity of 220 tonnes each. The material then goes through a drying process which removes all the moisture out of the waste (on average about 32%). Then after an eleven day drying process it comes out of the tunnel and is then shredded down to 30mm. Final distribution is to the cement industry, or alternatively it is baled and shipped overseas to Portugal and Denmark.
