Blue Spares go Green with new shredder As part of our commitment to recycling, Blue Spares have recently invested in a Packer cardboard shredder to reprocess all excess packaging which is received into our warehouses.

With one of our core markets being the waste sector you could argue that Blue Spares, more than most, should have an environmentally focused ethos.

02

Not only has this fantastic new piece of equipment considerably improved our onsite recycling efficiency, it has also greatly reduced costs by eliminating the need for 25 skips per year to take away this material which was previously wasteful. The quality of shredded material produced has meant a huge reduction in the need to purchase packaging products, giving a further cost saving from the new shredder. In actual fact, the shredded products is of such a high standard and of a heavy duty nature that it is more suited to protecting the heavier parts which need distributing. Commenting on the new addition, MD Sean Warburton said, "We are always looking at recycling options to improve our efficiency here at Blue Spares. We have a strong Green ethos and like to maximise our recycling rates where possible. The obvious cost savings and operational efficiencies are a huge plus for what was already a simple decision for us to make."

UK’s First Doppstadt Rotaro RDF Shredder goes to KCM Waste Management Phil and Mark Hickling, owners of KCM Waste Management, have built an MRF and Recycling Centre at their Rotherham premises where, in addition to processing and recycling co-mingled waste, the company is also baling a variety of plastics and cardboard and producing biomass briquettes from waste for energy generation.

The new plant is comfortably processing the co-mingled waste and, says the company, providing excellent recyclables volumes, thereby reducing tip-to-landfill materials with all the environmental and cost-saving benefits this engenders. One of the key recycled products being produced from this new installation are biomass briquettes from the SRF materials being processed through the plant.

Increasing volumes and varieties of recyclable materials coming into KCM Waste Management’s recycling plant has seen a significant growth in both throughput and waste stream variances. Having been a long-standing and loyal customer of Blue Group, KCM has always turned to Blue Machinery Central to provide the right recycling plant and equipment for optimum versatility and productivity

The Doppstadt DF-307 Rotaro is a single-shaft secondary fine shredder specifically designed and built for RDF production. High rotor mass increases the energy efficiency of the drive, with the rotor driven by two three-phase AC motors. Knives are easily exchanged although their robust construction produces extended wear-life. End-product sizing can be selected using interchangeable sieves with different mesh sizes.

A couple of years ago, KCM purchased a Doppstadt DW-3060K shredder and an SM-620 trommel which work in tandem and this was followed recently by the design, supply and installation of a complete commercial waste treatment plant from Blue Machinery Central. This is comprised of a Nihot air separator, picking line, eddy current separator and, first of its kind in the UK, a new Doppstadt DF-307 Rotaro RDF shredder.

Commenting on their new acquisition, Mark Hickling said “We’re really impressed with the reliability and throughput of the new plant and particularly the Doppstadt Rotaro shredder. The plant’s capacity and how easily it deals with the input waste is impressive.” www.kcmskips.co.uk

As for Blue Machinery Central, Mr Hickling is equally full of praise! “We are really pleased with the advice and expertise provided by Blue - and their after sales service and spare parts availability through Blue Spares is excellent. In our industry we need top-class product support and Blue has provided wearparts spares to us next day if not same day. They really have taken care of us after the initial sale”.

Big Screen Production for Biomass Experts GP Green Recycling GP Green Recycling is probably one of the largest producers of biomass from waste in Scotland and generates around 1,800 cubic metres of biomass every week from their state-of-the-art facilities in Blantyre. GP provides a greenwaste management system and recycling service to private contractors and municipal authorities, producing a range of high quality EU compliant biomass materials. GP has continually invested in cutting edge recycling plant and machinery, which it has sourced from Blue Machinery Scotland for many years and the latest additions to the GP production machines are Doppstadt SM trommel screeners, for which Blue is an appointed distributor.

AK-435 mobile shredder which then feeds the reduced size shredded material into the first of two Doppstadt SM-620 trommels, which is equipped with two screen sizes (12mm at the front of the drum and 10mm at the end) to produce and stockpile 10mm compost material. This, in turn, feeds the oversize to the second SM-620 with an 80mm drum screen where 10mm-80mm is screened off for biomass, with any oversize being recirculated for further processing.

The Doppstadt SM-620 trommel features the well-proven screening drum construction. Replaceable screens, a variety of ancillary equipment and a wide choice of mesh sizes allow this flexible machine to be easily adjusted and reconfigured for the wide variety of screening tasks and feed materials encountered in the GP Green Recycling operation. The trommel screen drum is 6m in length with a 2m diameter and a rotating speed of up to15rpm.

The ever-increasing scale of the GP operation has necessitated additional production capacity and, to achieve this, owner Jim Gilchrist once again called in Blue Machinery Scotland who recommended changing from a flatbed screener to a trommel drum-screen configuration for cost-effective and efficient screening of material to the various different sizings required. GP now uses an “array” of Doppstadt machines in their production line. A Fuchs MHL 320 materials handler (also purchased from Blue) feeds the incoming waste stream into a slow-speed pre-shredder, which discharges into a Doppstadt

GP Green Recycling reports a most satisfactory uplift in the tonnage produced through their system. Jim Gilchrist commented “We enjoy an excellent and mutually beneficial partnership with Blue Machinery Scotland and can count ourselves as being very satisfied customers for many years. Their advice and expertise, coupled with the ready availability of the superb Doppstadt range, makes our choice of machines and supplier all the easier. We are delighted with the two new trommels which have transformed our operations both in terms of volume and end-product quality.”

An efficient mechanical power transmission features direct chain wheel drive, with geared motors at the drum surface, and the variable speed provides optimum adjustment for regulation of the screening quality. State-of-the-art SPS control makes for easy operation, precise adjustment and access to the machine’s performance and operating data.

Backhus the clear favourite for Newsells Park Stud Newsells Park Stud is a world renowned stud farm in Hertfordshire. Established in 1926 by the de Trafford family, Newsells Park Stud was known for breeding the 1959 Derby winner, Parthia, and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner, Alcide.

In 2000 the facility was purchased by Jacobs Holding AG who aimed to develop the stud with the objective of continuing the family’s farming tradition following the successful founding of Gestüt Fährhof in Germany by Walther J. Jacobs, and Maine Chance Farms in South Africa by Dr Andreas Jacobs. Since that time Newsells Park Stud has grown to its present size of 1,200 acres, and has been restored and is maintained as a thriving habitat for wildlife as well as horses. 70,000 trees have been planted to help provide natural shelter, and the soil’s high calcium content and the excellent climate encourages a variety of herbage to thrive in their post and rail paddocks. In addition, an innovative composting facility introduced by Klaus J.Jacobs, recognizes the immeasurable environmental benefits of recycling the manure and spreading clean compost on to the land. In order to maximise the quality of the compost and to fast track the process, Newsells recently invested in a state-ofthe-art Backhus compost turner from Blue London. The 16.30 is the smallest in the range which is based on the proven concepts of the larger scale models available.

08

The compact design makes the 16.30 an exceptional addition to the Newsells composting operation, as it requires minimal storage due to its compact footspace whilst offering exceptional throughput and efficient processing. This ride on machine has excellent fuel efficiency and enables Newsells to turn their windrows to accelerate the composting process, greatly speeding up the timecycles for completed product to be ready to be reused on the grounds.

Patersons Aggregates Recycling Plant in Glasgow Terex Washing Systems (TWS) have just completed commissioning a 150TPH Recycling Wash Plant in Glasgow in association with their Scottish dealer Blue Machinery (Scotland) Ltd. The plant which is now up and running, 10 Hours + per day, was installed for the well known independent quarrying company Patersons Quarries Ltd. The new site is located at their Greenoakhill Quarry & Recycling Centre, Glasgow.

10

A bespoke Terex Washing System plant is processing inert construction and demolition waste material to produce four grades of stone and two grades of sand. Fergal McPhillips, Sales Manager for TWS explains “Upon careful analysis of the feed material and being mindful of the large variation in the silt content, it was established that specific attention was necessary when choosing the sand plant. With this in mind a flexible sand plant with a unique pre-wash option was sure to be the perfect solution. Based on these findings TWS proposed a bespoke system which is now ensuring that the construction and demolition waste material is being effectively processed and is producing saleable aggregates and sand.” Paterson’s approached Blue Machinery (Scotland) Ltd as they required a Recycling Wash Plant to deal with tens of thousands of tons of inert construction, demolition and excavation waste. This presented a substantial revenue opportunity for Paterson’s and was achieved through the installation of an efficient TWS washplant. Extensive initial testing and sieve analysis highlighted that the material to be processed had a very high silt content of 30% plus. After consultation with Blue Machinery (Scotland) Ltd and Paterson’s and vigorous analysis on the feed product, Terex Washing Systems proposed their range of cyclone separators and utilized a prewash to manage this high level of silt (less than 63 micron material).

Sean Loughran, Director of TWS commented “Blue Machinery (Scotland) Ltd have a strong history in wash plant sales in Scotland with the previous Powerscreen Brand and were the natural choice as the dealer for TWS in this area. The Blue Machinery (Scotland) Ltd sales team are highly respected within the Scottish market not only for high quality products they sell but also for their high levels of application and technical knowledge. The Paterson Plant is a demonstration of what can be achieved from conception through to the production of high quality products. Both Blue Machinery (Scotland) Ltd and TWS carefully considered the customer’s specific needs and manufactured a truly efficient plant which is now producing the goods in terms of high quality recycled aggregates.”

“Blue Scotland are delighted to continue our close working relationship with Patersons of Greenoakhill in supplying this new TWS washing plant for their Greenoakhill Quarry & Recycling Centre. The new system is doing a fantastic job and we were able to utilise some excellent new technologies available to us from TWS, to ensure maximum efficiency and recovery for Patersons.” Director Tom Paterson

The end products are being sold into the market for construction projects and groundwork contracts throughout Glasgow as well as being used in Paterson’s Readymix and their Concrete Block making operations. This Terex Washing Systems plant completes the recycling process with construction, demolition and excavated material taken from sites around Glasgow, which is processed and is then returned to those sites in the form of clean sized aggregate for drainage, etc. Readymix Concrete, concrete blocks and asphalt. Commenting on the new wash plant, Director Tom Paterson added, ”As a major supplier of construction materials into the central belt the new Aggregates Recycling Plant is an important investment for our company to ensure we are able to offer a sustainable source of high quality coarse and fine aggregate. Our location is ideally suited to minimise haulage to and from the market we serve, whether this is for the excavations coming off site or for supply of material back to site. The aggregates plant gives our site a new lease of life and will ensure a long term supply of high quality material for our customers and for our own complementary business of Readymix Concrete and Concrete Blocks” www.patersonsquarries.co.uk 11
