Black Indian is the third jewelry collection by emerging mixed media artist Ashraph. The jewelry in this collection is actually an accessorizing element in a mixed media installation of heads constructed from cedar and lace. The heads are inspired by the Black Indian masquerader, which is a traditional masquerade character in the famous Carnival of Trinidad & Tobago. Asphraph often weaves his East Indian heritage into his artwork. However, this collection is designed to capture the aesthetic depth he sees in the Black Indian Carnival costumes. Sterling silver is a core element that he pairs with smoky quartz, lava stone, druzy, bone, ebony, wood, red coral and feathers to reflect various elements masqueraders use to adorn and individualize the Black Indian costume as he/she performs in the streets at Carnival. Each handmade piece of jewelry can be accompanied by a head (see opposite page) which serves as storage, adornment and a display. Ashraph unveils his collections with a solo exhibition. The Black Indian collection was unveiled in Sept. 2015.
