Guitar players should be able to move easily between open and barre chords.
Covers classic electric blues and its influences, including roots rock and roots country.
The Jazz Workshop will read and solo from chord charts and will play a diverse mix of old and new jazz standards.
Drummers should be able to play steadily at fast and slow tempo, fill comfortably, and play both rock and blues grooves.
M O D E R N RO CK You’ll perform material from a broad range of artists and bands with releases from the past ten to fifteen years.

Intermediate level bands require at least a year of previous band experience along with the ability to read chord charts and learn parts by ear.
Bass players should be able to play various grooves easily and lock with the drummer. Singers should be able to sing in tune and have a strong enough sense of time so that song entry points and phrasing can be consistently executed. Keyboard players should be able to form major and minor triads without notation.

ADULT GUITAR C L A S S ES FOR ACO U S T IC PL AYE RS FRO M S QUAR E- ONE TO S QUAR E 16! A great way for beginners to learn guitar and for everyone else to keep getting better. Our classes are small enough (3-7 students) to allow for personalized attention, and the social aspect of learning with others keeps you motivated and engaged. With many different levels, we probably have a class that’s right for you!
UNDERSTANDING MUSIC E LECTRIC GUI TAR For intermediate players, Electric Rhythm Guitar focuses on timing, muting and accenting techniques, and overall strengthening of your right hand chops. Electric Lead Guitar is for those who want to develop soloing abilities in rock and blues styles. More experienced players can check out Blues/Jazz Guitar.
E A R T HEO RY Learn to identify intervals, scales, and common chord progressions by ear in order to facilitate playing, songwriting, and communication with other musicians. Open to all instruments and voice. For graduates of Ear Theory and for those who are able to recognize and name intervals, Ear Theory II will delve deeper into more complex chords and chord progressions.

In a relaxed setting, learn tunes from folk, bluegrass, Celtic, and rock traditions, take solos and sing if you’d like, or just play rhythm with the group. Lots of instruction in how to improvise—open for players of acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and ukulele.
Add joy and confidence to your life as a band member with practical and easily applied approaches to understanding rhythm and beats, melodies and scales, harmonies and modes, chord progressions, and song structure. Weekly class sessions take place live online via a Skype-like audio/video interface. Class sessions are also recorded and archived for later on-demand viewing. Includes lots of helpful downloads and exercises.

Beginning Ukulele is for the square-one beginner— you’ll learn to play songs in rock and folk styles and build a basic vocabulary of chords and simple strums. Level 2 and 3 classes will help you continue learning new songs and more complex strumming patterns.
The bass is really fun to play, and you can be band-ready faster than with any other instrument. So what’s holding you back? Our Square One Beginner class will have you groovin’ in no time!

Blue Bear offers a class for guitarists who want to learn music theory. If you’ve been playing for a while, you probably know bits and pieces of theory—this class will fill in the holes and apply it all in a practical way to the guitar fretboard.

ADULT VOICE: TECHNIQUE
ADULT VOICE: SINGING
For those with little or no singing experience, Blue Bear offers two very similar classes: Singing for People Who Can’t Sing and Learn to Sing: Group Singing for Beginners. You’ll learn the basics of how to produce a good tone, with lots of in-class exercises and songs, mostly singing as a group. Choose what best suits your schedule and location.
If you’re satisfied with your understanding of vocal technique, Blue Bear offers three classes where you can sing and get individualized coaching on your songs.
Blue Bear also offers beginning voice classes for those with previous singing experience—choirs, bands, musical theater, etc.—but no formal voice instruction: Singing for People Who Can Sing and Vocal Technique with Raz Kennedy. Classes include group singing and some individual work.
BEGI NNI NG JAZZ VO C A L S Instructor Lea Centauri introduces the art of singing lyrics: increase vocal range and confidence, learn vocal runs, build a repertoire, work on performance skills, and find your soul note and color.
JA ZZ VO C A L PE R FO R MA NC E Teacher Sharman Duran provides great piano accompaniment and the class culminates in a club performance with backing trio.
Most of our technique classes offer higher levels for students who finish the introductory class. Singers with previous technique instruction may be able to join a higher level class, although some private instruction with the teacher may be recommended.

SEMINARS FOR GUITAR AND VOICE
Our new Electronic Music Production class will show you how to create tracks, be it house, techno, or dubstep—or whatever moves you. Intro to DJing will take place at the club Monarch culminating in a mix party! DJ instructor Sake One is a veteran West Coast DJ who continues to travel and make an impact with his Art of Storytellin’ party, which has been produced annually in San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, NY and Chicago.
During the week before each quarter, Blue Bear offers one-night classes in a variety of topics of interest to singers, guitarists and perhaps to others as well. As a benefit for your annual Member Fee, you can take one Short Seminar for free anytime during the year—you’ll need to call the school to enroll. January seminars include: Acoustic Slide Guitar, British Singer/Songwriters, Triad Power, The Jazz Guitar Style of Charlie Christian, Intro to Vocal Technique, Exploring Electric Guitar Sounds, Supercharge Your Guitar Practice, and more.

In Janak Ramachandran’s Rock/Pop Vocal Performance you’ll receive technique and performance coaching in any style of music you’d like to sing, and perform at our Adult Rockcital at the end of the quarter. And remember, there are singing spots available in all of our Band Workshops (pages 2 and 3). There are no voice class prerequisites if you can sing in tune and have a good sense of timing.

KIDS & TEENS GROUP CLASSES In Singing and Performance, students will learn how to sing and perform songs from popular artists. Along with solo and group singing, kids will work on routines and stage presence. Young beginners can explore different instruments in Instrument Petting Zoo. After experiencing guitar, bass, drums and piano, the class will learn to play a song as a band by the end of the quarter. For grades 2-4.
ALL STAR BAND PROGRAM
Introduction to DJing will teach the history, the gear, and how to do basic mixing styles on classic vinyl, and digital formats like CDJs, Ableton and Traktor controllers. Intro to Electronic Music Production will teach how to use music software to create electronic music like house, techno, hip hop or dubstep. Augmenting Reality with Music & Sound will explore how to transform your phone or tablet into a portal to hidden magical musical worlds—you’ll learn how to build prototype applications that integrate music and sound.
Blue Bear’s All Star Band Program, under the direction of J.T. Locke, is a comprehensive 9-month performance and education curriculum for 6th-12th graders. Using rock music as a platform, students strengthen their instrumental technique, ensemble playing, performance, improvisation, music theory and songwriting. This unique program provides fantastic opportunities to play real shows in San Francisco venues. Limited spots are still available to join in January— email amanda@bluebearmusic.org.

New to our camp offerings this summer will be a DJ camp for high-schoolers and a MAD (music, art, drama) camp for children ages 6-10 years, in collaboration with Young Performers Theater and SF Children’s Art Center. Other popular camps include Rock Band, Girls Rock!!, Studio Recording, Songwriting Band, and Guitar Camps, with offerings available for students entering grades 4-12 in the fall of 2018. Band camps run 10 am-3 pm Monday through Friday and include a special performance on Friday evening ending around 5 pm so campers can share what they’ve learned.

These preschoolers are ready to rock and roll, raise the roof and jam out! Children will discover their own talking and singing voices, dance to the beat, and explore rhythm with real musical instruments. Let’s make some music and boogie down to it!
M I X ED B EA RS (6 MONT HS-5 YEARS)
This class is specially designed for parents with more than one child. Babies, toddlers, and big kids all join in the music making fun, watching and learning from one another. There will be plenty of music, movement and instrument play for children of all ages.
