ADULT BAND WORKSHOPS Our band workshops are the heart and soul of Blue Bear— student bands that rehearse and then perform a 40-minute set of material at a San Francisco club. Workshop offerings include the following:

Wide open to style, material may range from oldies to blues, alternative to Top 40— you name it!
Draws mostly from the repertoire of the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. Students decide what “classic” means!

Includes material from classic artists like James Brown and Aretha Franklin.
For acoustic players including guitar, bass, keys, singers, and percussion, who want to play unplugged versions of their favorite rock tunes or songs from the indie/folk movement.

M O D ERN RO CK & CO N T E MPORARY BANDS You’ll perform material from a broad range of artists and bands with releases from the past ten to fifteen years. 2

DE E P ROCK & I MPROV Tackle more complex material with an emphasis on soloing and arrangement vs. getting cover songs performance-perfect. In addition to challenging rock and funk material, simpler jazz tunes will also be introduced.

PR E R EQU I S I T E S Basic level bands do not require any previous band playing experience, though being able to learn parts by ear or with the help of a private instructor is best. Intermediate level bands require at least a year of previous band experience along with the ability to read chord charts and learn parts by ear. Guitar players should be able to move easily between open and barre chords. Drummers should be able to play steadily at fast and slow tempo, fill comfortably, and play both rock and blues grooves. Bass players should be able to play various grooves easily and lock with the drummer. Singers should be able to sing in tune and have a strong enough sense of time so that song entry points and phrasing can be consistently executed. Keyboard players should be able to form major and minor triads without notation.

ADULT GUITAR CLASSES C L A S S ES FOR ACO U S T IC PL AYE RS FRO M S QUAR E- ONE TO S QUAR E 2 3 ! A great way for beginners to learn guitar and for everyone else to keep getting better. Our classes are small enough (3-7 students) to allow for personalized attention, and the social aspect of learning with others keeps you motivated and engaged. With many different levels, we probably have a class that’s right for you! And check out our new 5-week classes in Fingerstyle Guitar, Americana Songs and Country Guitar.
ACO U S T IC JAM C L A S S ES In a relaxed setting, learn tunes from folk, bluegrass, Celtic, and rock traditions, take solos and sing if you’d like, or just play rhythm with the group. Lots of instruction in how to improvise—open for players of acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and ukulele.

E LECTRIC GUI TAR CL ASSE S For intermediate players, Electric Rhythm Guitar focuses on timing, muting and accenting techniques, and overall strengthening of your right hand chops. Electric Lead Guitar is for those who want to develop soloing abilities in rock and blues styles. More experienced players can check out Blues/Jazz Guitar.
M U SIC THEORY F OR GU ITARIS T S Blue Bear offers a class for guitarists who want to learn music theory. If you’ve been playing for a while, you probably know bits and pieces of theory—this class will fill in the holes and apply it all in a practical way to the guitar fretboard.
ADU LT BA S S C L A S S E S The bass is really fun to play, and you can be band-ready faster than with any other instrument. So what’s holding you back?! We offer a square-one beginner class and two others for those who have played anywhere from three to six months.
ADU LT U KU L E L E C L A S S ES Beginning Ukulele is for the square-one beginner—you’ll learn to play songs in rock and folk styles and build a basic vocabulary of chords and simple strums. For those with six months of playing experience, Rock Ukulele will tackle new songs and more complex strumming patterns. Singing is encouraged!
ADULT SONGWRITING CLASSES For beginning writers, Write Your First Song is a step-bystep intro to writing chords, melodies and lyrics that will include recording a demo of your work in our digital Studio Z. And new this quarter is Songwriters Circle, hosted by Program Director Dennis Criteser. This class is for active writers who want to share their work, get constructive feedback, open the doors to new approaches and new ideas, and be part of a community of songwriters at Blue Bear.

ADULT VOICE CLASSES TECHNIQUE
ADULT VOICE CLASSES SINGING
For those with little or no singing experience, Blue Bear offers two very similar classes: Singing for People Who Can’t Sing and Learn to Sing: Group Singing for Beginners. You’ll learn the basics of how to produce a good tone, with lots of in-class exercises and songs, mostly singing as a group. Choose what best suits your schedule and location.
If you’re satisfied with your understanding of vocal technique, Blue Bear offers three classes where you can sing and get individualized coaching on your songs. Beginning Jazz Vocals with Lea Centauri introduces the art of singing lyrics: increase vocal range and confidence, learn vocal runs, build a repertoire and performance skills, find your soul note and color. In Jazz Vocal Performance, teacher Sharman Duran provides great piano accompaniment and the class culminates in a club performance with backing trio. In Janak Ramachandran’s Rock/Pop Vocal Performance you’ll receive technique and performance coaching in any style of music you’d like to sing, and perform at our Adult Rockcital at the end of the quarter.
Blue Bear also offers beginning voice classes for those with previous singing experience—choirs, bands, musical theater, etc.—but no formal voice instruction: Singing for People Who Can Sing, Singing I with Libby Lavella and Vocal Technique with Raz Kennedy. Classes include group singing and some individual work. Raz’s class introduces the Complete Vocal Technique, of which Raz is the only certified teacher on the West Coast. Most of our technique classes offer higher levels for students who finish the introductory class. Singers with previous technique instruction may be able to join a higher level class, although some private instruction with the teacher may be recommended.
NEW!! Check out our new Blue Bear Gospel Chorus on Thursday nights. You’ll learn soul-stirring classic gospel material and perform at our Adult Rockcital in April. And remember, there are singing spots available in all of our Band Workshops (pages 2 and 3). There are no voice class prerequisites if you can sing in tune and have a good sense of timing.
Seminars for Guitar, Voice, Harmonica and Songwriting During the week before each quarter, Blue Bear offers one-night classes in a variety of topics of interest to singers, guitarists and perhaps to others as well. As a benefit for your annual Member Fee, you can take one Short Seminar for free anytime during the year—you’ll need to call the school to enroll. January seminars include Beginning Harmonica, Stage Two Harmonica, Acoustic Slide Guitar, Voice!, Transcription Secrets for Guitar, Piano Secrets for Accompanying Singers, How to Sing and Play Guitar Together, and more.

KIDS & TEENS GROUP CLASSES
ALL STAR BAND PROGRAM
In Singing and Performance, students will sing and perform songs from popular artists and also develop songwriting skills. Also included is work on routines and stage presence. Two different sections for grades 2-8.
Blue Bear’s All Star Band Program is a comprehensive 9-month performance and education curriculum for 6th-12th graders. Using rock music as a platform, students strengthen their instrumental technique, ensemble playing, performance, improvisation, music theory and songwriting. This unique program provides fantastic opportunities to play real shows in San Francisco venues. New students can join existing bands in January – call 415.673.3600 to set up a placement audition.
Young beginners can explore different instruments in Instrument Petting Zoo. Having experienced guitar, bass, drums and piano, they’ll learn to play a song as a band by the end of the quarter. For grades 2-4. Graduate to Petting Zoo II where more songs will be learned! We’re proud to announce a pre-holiday MAD CAMP, December 19-23, 10 am-3 pm—music, art and drama for children ages 6-9 years, in collaboration with Young Performers Theater and SF Children’s Art Center. See our website for more information. Our Saturday Songwriting Band is for older teens who want to expand their writing skills and play in a band doing all originals. We can coach your very own After-School Rock Band if you have a minimum group of four young musicians who are ready to go—call the school to explore times and teacher options. 8

SUMMER CAMPS Very high teacher-to-student ratios and tailored instruction from instructors who know music and teens—it’s all about an intense week of learning, fun and rock ‘n’ roll. Camps will include Rock Band, Rocker Grrls, Recording Studio, Songwriting Band, Voice and more—for students entering grades 4-12 in the fall of 2017. Band camps run 10 am-3 pm Monday through Friday and include a special performance on Friday ending around 5:30 pm so campers can share what they’ve learned. Schedules will be posted online in January.

Little Bears offers classes to suit any kid and their accompanying parent or caregiver (we want to make this fun for everyone in the classroom). Music affects all people of all ages; that’s why we began teaching classes for children as young as four months.

Dancing and instrument play help children develop motor skills. 4. Aural training helps children build listening and concentration skills. 5. Because kids and adults LOVE to rock. Children in this class will create musical sounds and rhythms with their voices and bodies. Parents be warned: there will be lots of jumping, bouncing, moving, grooving and playing in this class!

For the active and tubular two and three year olds that want to pump up the volume! SHOUT! and Rock, Rattle & Roll! This class is great for our
Bouncy Bear graduates and will help prepare your kiddo for pre-school and more instruction-based classes.
B O O G I E B EA RS (3 -5 YEARS)
These preschoolers are ready to rock and roll, raise the roof and jam out! Children will discover their own talking and singing voices, dance to the beat, and explore rhythm with real musical instruments. Let’s make some music and boogie down to it!
M I X ED B EA RS (6 MONT HS-5 YEARS)
This class is specially designed for parents with more than one child. Babies, toddlers, and big kids all join in the music making fun, watching and learning from one another. There will be plenty of music, movement and instrument play for children of all ages.

After the second class, no refund shall be given. Can I do make-ups? Yes! We offer two make-ups for kids enrolled full-time, you will receive codes that can be used to book them starting the second week of class. Sliding Scale: Blue Bear wants to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to participate in music education. We offer from 20%-85% off. COMMUNITY PROGRAMS The benefit of a music education runs far and wide. It is proven that learning to play music boosts brain function, improves academic comprehension, teaches discipline, increases coordination, and provides a positive outlet (among other wonderful benefits). Blue Bear has made it a priority to ensure communities citywide have access to those benefits. Through partnerships with public and private schools and community centers, and with generous contributions from our donors, we have been able to grow our outreach efforts while arts funding is being cut. You can now find Blue Bear programming in the YMCA, Glide Memorial Church and in the SF Public Library. We hope to expand our program into YOUR neighborhood because everyone deserves to play!
