ADVAN CE D F U NK/ ROCK / JAZZ This workshop will cook up a challenging set ranging from Tower of Power to Watermelon Man, with some Steely Dan as a possible garnish.
SON GWRITE RS BA ND This workshop is for writers who want to do their songs in a full band setting and for musicians who would like to explore co-writing and arrangement of original material.
2. $665 for the Workshop and Performance plus four private lessons. (Private lessons will help you get the most out of your workshop experience!) To enroll, students must be current with their annual $35 Member Fee. Three-pay options available.
PR E R EQU I S I T E S Basic level bands do not require any previous band playing experience, though being able to learn parts by ear or with the help of a private instructor is best. Intermediate level bands require at least a year of previous band experience along with the ability to read chord charts and learn parts by ear. Guitar players should be able to move easily between open and barre chords. Drummers should be able to play steadily at fast and slow tempo, fill comfortably, and play both rock and blues grooves. Bass players should be able to play various grooves easily and lock with the drummer. Singers should be able to sing in tune and have a strong enough sense of time so that song entry points and phrasing can be consistently executed. Keyboard players should be able to form major and minor triads without notation.

Our classes are small enough (3-7 students) to allow for personalized attention, and the social aspect of learning with others keeps you motivated and engaged. With many different levels, we probably have a class that’s right for you!
SONGWRITING INTENSIVE WITH PETER CASE E LECTRIC GUI TAR For intermediate players, Electric Rhythm Guitar classes focus on timing, muting and accenting techniques, and overall strengthening of your right hand chops. Electric Lead Guitar classes are for those who want to develop soloing abilities in rock and blues styles. More experienced players can check out Blues/Jazz Guitar.

ACO U S T IC JAM In a relaxed setting, learn tunes from folk, bluegrass, Celtic, and rock traditions, take solos and sing if you’d like, or just play rhythm with the group. Lots of instruction in how to improvise—open for players of acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and ukulele.
UNDERSTANDING MUSIC MU S I C T H EO RY FO R GU I TA RI STS Blue Bear offers a class for guitarists who want to learn music theory. If you’ve been playing for a while, you probably know bits and pieces of theory—this class will fill in the holes and apply it all in a practical way to the guitar fretboard.

Beginning Ukulele is for the square-one beginner— you’ll learn to play songs in rock and folk styles and build a basic vocabulary of chords and simple strums. Level 2 and 3 classes will help you continue learning new songs and more complex strumming patterns.
The bass is really fun to play, and you can be band-ready faster than with any other instrument. So what’s holding you back? Our Square One Beginner class will have you groovin’ in no time!

Peter Case brings knowledge from his years as an acclaimed songwriter, including his debut in 1976 with punk/new wave/ rock-and-roll legends The Nerves and his popular recordings with the Plimsouls for Geffen Records, through to his groundbreaking and threetime Grammy-nominated solo career. In this weekend intensive, Case offers secrets of the craft that will have you immediately writing more powerful and interesting songs. The atmosphere is fun, comfortable, and at times humorous, but the content is serious and can help you take your writing to new levels. The workshop will focus equally on lyrics and music, and on the art of coming up with fresh ideas. Topics include “thinking like a genius” and “putting what you love directly into your songs.”
MUSICIANSHIP ONLINE CLASS MU S I C S KI L L S FO R BAND M EM B ERS Add joy and confidence to your life as a band member with practical and easily applied approaches to understanding rhythm and beats, melodies and scales, harmonies and modes, chord progressions, and song structure. Weekly class sessions take place live online via a Skype-like audio/video interface. Class sessions are also recorded and archived for later on-demand viewing. Includes lots of helpful downloads and exercises. $95 for 10 classes!

ADULT VOICE: TECHNIQUE
ADULT VOICE: SINGING
For those with little or no singing experience, Blue Bear offers Learn to Sing: Group Singing for Beginners.. You’ll learn the basics of how to produce a good tone, with lots of in-class exercises and songs, mostly singing as a group.
If you’re satisfied with your understanding of vocal technique, Blue Bear offers three classes where you can sing and get individualized coaching on your songs.
Blue Bear also offers a beginning voice class for those with previous singing experience – choirs, bands, musical theater, etc.—but no formal voice instruction: Vocal Technique with Raz Kennedy. Classes include group singing and some individual work.
Instructor Lea Centauri introduces the art of singing lyrics: increase vocal range and confidence, learn vocal runs, build a repertoire, work on performance skills, and find your soul note and color.
Most of our technique classes offer higher levels for students who finish the introductory class. Singers with previous technique instruction may be able to join a higher level class, although some private instruction with the teacher may be recommended.

And remember, there are singing spots available in all of our Band Workshops (pages 2 and 3). There are no voice class prerequisites if you can sing in tune and have a good sense of timing.
ADULT DJING & ELECTRONIC MUSIC
SEMINARS FOR GUITAR AND VOICE
Our new Electronic Music Production class will show you how to use Ableton Live to create tracks in genres such as house, techno, dubstep or hip-hop- whatever moves you. Intro to DJing takes place at internationally respected club Monarch, culminating in a party where you can show off your mix! Instructor DJ Cole has 20 years of experience rocking clubs around the country in a variety of styles (house, tech, hip-hop, funk, etc.) and is one of the house DJs for venues like Monarch, The Great Northern, The Fillmore and The Masonic. Special guest instructors joining Cole will feature some of the best DJs in the Bay Area!
During the week before each quarter, Blue Bear offers one-night classes in a variety of topics of interest to singers, guitarists and perhaps to others as well. As a benefit for your annual Member Fee, you can take one Short Seminar for free anytime during the year—you’ll need to call the school to enroll. June seminars include Intro to Harmonica, Harmonica: Taking It Deeper, British Singer/Songwriters, Voice!, Intro to Mandolin, and more.

These preschoolers are ready to rock and roll, raise the roof and jam out! Children will discover their own talking and singing voices, dance to the beat, and explore rhythm with real musical instruments. Let’s make some music and boogie down to it!
M I X ED B EA RS (6 MONT HS-5 YEARS)
This class is specially designed for parents with more than one child. Babies, toddlers, and big kids all join in the music making fun, watching and learning from one another. There will be plenty of music, movement and instrument play for children of all ages.
