Kermadec (IRE) Spring is always a time of expectation and excitement for mare owners as the breeding season gets underway. The arrival of the first foals of the year and the decisions on the best mates for mares are annual preoccupations at this time. The newest crop of sires is always the subject of intense interest and 2016 will be no different as many of the best racehorses of recent times prepare to cover their first mares. Real Impact displayed his ability early in the breeding and racing powerhouse of Japan. From three starts at two, he won sensationally on debut and was twice second in Group 1 and Group 2 company – beaten only by Japan’s Champion 2YO Colt Grand Prix Boss. At just his sixth race start Real Impact won the Tokyo Yasuda Kinen G1 over 1600 metres in a staggering 1:32 flat, the first three-year-old ever to win the race. The Yasuda Kinen is rated among the World’s Best Group One Races over the past three years, above the George Main, the Chipping Norton and the Doncaster.

He ended his 3YO season with a Timeform rating of 121, alongside Mongolian Khan, Preferment & Volkstok’n’barrell. Trainer Paul Messara says, “A very genuine racehorse with a fantastic temperament, he’s a beautiful horse to work with and was very unlucky not to win a Group One. “Scissor Kick is a strikingly attractive colt and was

always the pick of the mounting yard.” Scissor Kick brings exceptional genetics to the Arrowfield stallion barn, and not only as a son of dominant sire of sires Redoute’s Choice. Awarded a Timeform rating of 124, Real Impact retired to stud as Deep Impact’s only multiple Group 1-winning son with $5.6 million prizemoney and is currently serving his first book of mares at Shadai. Real Impact’s dam Tokio Reality has also produced multiple stakeswinner & Group 1-placed I’ll Love Again and the Group 3-placed Neorealism. Damsire Meadowlake sired 54 stakeswinners including Champion US 2YO Filly Meadow Star. In January 2013 Beneteau, Arrowfield’s young homebred son of Redoute’s Choice died, leaving a total of 136 foals on the ground and in utero behind him. He also left a gap that has steadily enlarged, as those two crops have already produced 12 stakes performers, including Group winners Prompt Return, Almighty Girl and Puritan. The team at Arrowfield felt Beneteau’s loss deeply, but responded as horse breeders do, by setting out to replace him. They found not one, but two Redoute’s Choice colts at the Inglis Easter Sale and in the subsequent three years they have both risen to the challenge of filling Beneteau’s boots. Panzer Division (Redoute’s Chice-Desert Fight by Hussonet) progressed from an impressive debut 2YO win to Group 3 success over 1400m as a Spring 3YO, defeating subsequent Group 1 winner Shooting To Win. At only his fourth start he was fifth in the weight-for-age ATC George Main S. 1600m G1, won by Sacred Falls. That performance earned Panzer Division a Timeform rating of 120 and his Autumn prospects looked bright, but his career ended after only seven starts.

Scissor Kick (Redoute’s Choice-Back Pass by Quest For Fame)

Trainer Paul Messara says, “Panzer Division is close to the perfect thoroughbred horse on conformation and presence, he’s a stunning individual. “He also had a huge amount of ability and we had high aspirations for him, but his career was cut short by injury in the Hobartville Stakes.” Panzer Division is out of dual Group 1 winner Desert Fight, Champion 2YO Filly in Chile, by multiple champion sire Hussonet, also a leading broodmare sire of Blue Diamond G1 winner Extreme Choice (by Not A Single Doubt) and champion filly Majmu (by Redoute’s Choice). Scissor Kick (Redoute’s Choice-Back Pass by Quest For Fame) was also an impressive juvenile winner before a heady Spring campaign that established him among Australia’s best three-year-old colts. He won the ATC Rosebud H. 1200m LR before heading the closest of quinellas with Panzer Division in the ATC Up and Coming S. 1300m G3. The photo finish went against Scissor Kick at his fifth start, in the ATC Golden Rose S. 1400m G1, but jockey Tye Angland had no doubt about the quality of his widely admired second-placed effort, saying afterwards “He's a real fighter, best horse in the race.” Scissor Kick’s Autumn three-year-old campaign began with success in the ATC Eskimo Prince S. 1200m G3, beating subsequent Group 1 winner Delectation. He then joined Dissident, Wandjina & Chautauqua to complete the top four in the ATC All Aged S. G1 rated Australia’s best 1400-metre race over the past three years.

Star juveniles boost Coolmore roster in 2016 Pride of Dubai and Vancouver, the star juvenile colts of the 2014-15 Australian racing season, will stand at Coolmore, Jerrys Plains in 2016. The former is a son of champion Street Cry (IRE) and the latter a son of Medaglia d’Oro (USA) and both are from mares by breed-shaper Danehill (USA). Pride of Dubai will command a fee of $55,000 and Vancouver, who is still in training with Aidan O’Brien in Ireland and chasing further Gr.1 sprint glory in the UK before retirement in July, is on $66,000. They will be joined by shuttling newcomer No Nay Never (USA) (Scat Daddy), a winner of the Prix Morny-Gr.1, who is the subject of a separate story in this issue. They will be part of a 12-strong roster for the international breeding giant which will also welcome back sprint champion Starspangledbanner (Choisir), fee $24,750, who has stood in Victoria since making a return to stud duties in 2013 and shuttled to Ireland for the northern season in 2016.

Pride of Dubai was bred by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and raised at Coolmore where he was labelled “top pick of the paddock” by trainers Peter and Paul Snowden. The winner of two, and placed twice from five starts, he was the only dual Gr.1-winning juvenile colt last season. He came from well back to run third on debut at Rosehill (1100m) on December 20, 2014, after being ninth at the 400m, and was beaten a length behind Ottoman. He reappeared at Caulfield on February 14, 2015 in the colts’ division of the Blue Diamond Prelude-Gr.3 (1100m) and went down narrowly to the ill-fated Of The Brave after again coming from well back (10th at the 400m) in the field of 14. Free Eagle a coup for Cornerstone Cornerstone Stud is making quite a mark on the Australian breeding scene though the importation of high-class shuttlers like Dalakhani (IRE) and Zebedee (GB), both already stud successes in Europe before coming to SA. This year Sam Hayes is banking on another Gr.1 European performer in Free Eagle (IRE) and a speedy Australian two year-old in Valentia to entice breeders. With Dalakhani resting this year, Free Eagle (High Chaparral (IRE)-Polished Gem by Danehill (USA)) looks an inspired choice as he was rated the JointChampion Older Horse in Europe and Ireland (Intermediate) in 2015 after winning the Royal Ascot Prince of Wales’s Stakes-Gr.1 (10f) from The Grey Gatsby and Western Hymn for owner Moyglare Stud Farms Ltd and trainer Dermot Weld. Valentia (Fastnet Rock-Smart Company by Mister C (USA)) holds plenty of appeal as well. He’s a son of a dual Australian Champion Sire and now sire of sires in Fastnet Rock and his winning dam is a sister to dual Gr.1 winner Super Elegant. It’s the family of Razor Sharp and Steel Blade that has done such sterling service for Fred Peisah at his Lomar Park Stud on the outskirts of Sydney and Valentia had plenty of ability, winning the Skyline Stakes-Gr.2 at two.

Home grown heroes fit the bill at Darley Darley’s Kelvinside property at Aberdeen in the Hunter Valley is the new home for two of the highest profile locally bred racehorses retiring to stud in 2016, Both Gr.1 winners, they are Kermadec (NZ) (Teofilo (IRE)) and Exosphere (Lonhro), whose sires also grace the Darley NSW roster.

[ EXOSPHERE ] Lonhro-Altitude by Danzero

Exosphere, whose first two dams are by Golden Slipper winners Danzero and Marscay, won five of his 10 starts and more than $1m including the Golden Rose-Gr.1 (1400m) by 2.25 lengths from Speak Fondly, running 1:21.83, the fastest ever for the three yearold feature0 at Rosehill. He showed blistering speed at his next start too, winning the Roman Consul-Gr.2 at Randwick in record time of 1:08.53 for the tough 1200m and had 3.25 lengths on runner-up Zoutenant at the finish after being eighth 400m from home. That was his third win in succession and he began the run with a 1.25 length win over Gr.1 winner Press Statement in the Run to the Rose-Gr.2 (1200m), again coming off the pace at the 400m to score well for regular rider James McDonald. Those wins came between August 29 and October 3 last year and the sequence ended next time out when the John O’Sheatrained colt was fourth behind Japonisme in the Ascot Vale (Coolmore) Stakes-Gr.1 (1200m) on October 31. He disappointed first up at Rosehill the following month and was then given a break until the following February, winning a Randwick trial, a Kembla maiden (1000m by 4.25 lengths) and then a four length romp in the Skyline Stakes-Gr.2 (1200m), all in the space of a month. Always well back, he was unplaced in the Golden Slipper at his only other run at two. Trainer John O’Shea described the colt as “a magnificent individual with enormous natural talent”, while Godolphin’s managing director Henry Plumptre said, “Exosphere retires with an extraordinary race record. Because of his unusual size and bulk, Exosphere had training issues but he managed to put together a string of outstanding performances. CRITERION CRITERION raced only in the best company and proved one of the toughest and most competitive performers of his generation over four seasons to earn more than $7.3m. A son of Golden Slipper winner Sebring and from a high-class American family, he joins the star-studded roster at Newgate Farm in 2016.

RITERION (NZ), who retires to Newgate Farm in 2016 on $35,750, is an exception in an era when young stallion prospects become so valuable they are rushed off to stud after only a handful of starts. The handsome chestnut had 36 starts from age two to five (35 at black type level), won four Gr.1 and was in the first three in 21 starts, earning $7.317m.

Criterion (Sebring-Mica’s Pride by Bite the Bullet (USA)) also boasts a very good pedigree as he’s by Champion 2YO Colt and Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winner and now successful sire Sebring (More Than Ready (USA)), while his dam is a Gr.3 winner from a high-class US family and has produced seven winners including other stakes winners Varenna Miss and Silently.

Starting off in the stables of David Payne, Criterion made his debut at Rosehill (1100m) on November 3, 2012, winning by a half-length in 1:05.89 from subsequent Gr.1 winner Sweet Idea. Put away until February 16, 2013, the two year-old was beaten three lengths on a dead (5) track in the Listed Canonbury Stakes behind Never Can Tell and Whittington and then bounced back in a field of 14 to collect the Black Opal Stakes-LR (1200m) on a dead (4) Canberra track from Sidestep on March 10, wearing blinkers for the first time.

Criterion put himself into contention for the Golden Slipper at Rosehill on March 23, beating Fast ‘n’ Rocking and Havana in the Todman Stakes-Gr.2 (1200m) at Rosehill. “He’s still a bit of a thinker and

Taken to Melbourne, he was fourth in the 2500m VRC Derby-Gr.1 (4.5 lengths) to Polanski, Complacent and Thunder Fantasy before going for a break. Taken to Sydney, he was eighth in the Randwick Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m) behind Dissident (also by Sebring) on March 15 before claiming his first Gr.1 in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m), beating Thunder Fantasy by 3.5 lengths on a slow (7) track with Hugh Bowman taking control in the straight to storm home on the talented three year-old. Payne said the horse was more mature than when he finished fourth in the VRC Derby in the spring. “From day one we knew this is what he’s been looking for, distances of 2000m and above,” Payne said. “We still didn’t know about the weather and if he could handle the wet, but it looks like it’s not a problem for him. He’ll be winning the Derby hopefully.” That assessment proved correct and Criterion’s second Gr.1 came next start on April 12 when he won the $2m Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick (heavy 9), beating Tupac Amaru by a half-length in a field of 18. “We got him for the Slipper, but it just shows you there are no rules in racing,” Payne said after the Derby. “But this fellow needed time, he’s only becoming a horse now. He’s furnished and it makes a difference and I think he’ll be an even better four year-old.” Criterion’s four year-old season started on August 23 when he was third in the Warwick Stakes-Gr.2 (1400m) behind Tiger Tees and Royal Descent, beaten 1.5 lengths on a heavy (9) Kensington track and he was unplaced on a similar surface in the Chelmsford Stakes-Gr.2 behind Hawkspur on September 6. He struck a good track next time out in the Hill Stakes-Gr.2 (2000m) at Randwick on September 20 when runner-up to Junoob and then went to Caulfield where he was just pipped by Fawkner in the Caulfield Stakes-Gr.1 (2000m) on a good track on October 11. He was seventh in the Cox Plate-Gr.1 behind Adelaide and then fifth in the Mackinnon-Gr.1 behind Happy Trails on November 1 at his final start for Payne. Transferred to David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Criterion went to Hong Kong for the Longines HK Cup-Gr.1 (2000m), going down 1.1 lengths when third to Designs on Rome and Military Attack. He returned to Australian racing on March 7 with a 1.25 length third behind Cosmic Endeavour and Catkins in the Canterbury Stakes-Gr.1 (1300m) at Randwick and was then the narrowest of seconds behind Japanese raider Real Impact (Kermadec third) in the George Ryder-Gr.1 (1500m in 1:28.29) at Rosehill on March 21. Kermadec would go on to nudge out Real Impact in the Doncaster next time out on April 6, while Criterion scored a historic victory in the $4m Queen Elizabeth Stakes-Gr.1 (2000m) at Randwick on April 11, winning the crowning event of The Championships by 2.25 lengths from grand international campaigner Red Cadeaux and Royal Descent, backing up from a third in the Doncaster, on the soft (7) track.

Tough and competitive over four seasons of racing, Criterion is by Sebring, Australia’s Champion 2YO of 2007-08 and winner of five of his six starts at two ($2.53m) including the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 and AJC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 and runner-up in the Champagne Stakes-Gr.1. The Danehill connection continues with Sebring as his dam Purespeed is a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Flying Spur (Danehill) and from Lady Moulin, a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Luskin Star (Kaoru Star), while his third dam Willowy, won the Listed Fernhill Handicap at two and is a daughter of champion sire Better Boy (IRE)). Sebring entered stud in 2009 and his fee at Widden in 2016 is $77,000. As well as getting Criterion in his first crop, he also had the 2014-15 Horse of the Year Dissident (Anabaa), who is also on the stallion roster at Newgate ($33,000 in 2016). Dissident’s seven wins (1000m-1600m) included the All-Aged Stakes-Gr.1, Randwick Guineas-Gr.1, Makybe Diva Stakes-Gr.1, Memsie Stakes-Gr.1 and Orr Stakes-Gr.1 and as well as his HOY honours, he was also rated Champion Sprinter and Champion Older Horse. He was precocious enough to win the Blue Diamond preview on debut at two. There have been good horses in every crop since including Gr.2 winner and Golden Slipper third Bring Me The Maid (Belong to Me), Gr.2 winners Believe Yourself (Encosta de Lago, inbred to the Mr. Prospector mare Rolls (USA), dam of Flying Spur and second dam of Encosta de Lago), Hatori Hanzo (Marauding), Seaburge and Catch a Fire (also with dams by Encosta de Lago) and Gr.3 winners Thurlow (King’s Chapel), Scratchy Bottom (Danehill), Kiss a Rose (Redoute’s Choice), the last two with doubles of Danehill, and Clifton Red (Encosta de Lago, second dam by Century; doubling Rolls and Better Boy). Sebring was third on the Australian sires’ list in 2014-15 and already has 208 winners (57.3%) of $29.32m, 21 of them stakes winners (5.8% of starters) and this record is sure to improve given the quality books he has covered in recent seasons, looking after 203, 223, 192 and 176 mares in the past four years. His progeny have a winning distance index of 1372m. He has 95 winners (7SW) of $7.05m this season (to May 16) to be eighth on the sires’ list by earnings (behind Street Cry). Success easy to predict for Nostradamus [ NOSTRADAMUS ] Medaglia d’Oro (USA)-Leone Chiara by Lion Hunter

The 16th century apothecary and seer Nostradamus was very fond of making predictions but his equine namesake lets his actions do all the talking. A recordsetting horse with a brilliant turn of foot, the son of Medaglia d’Oro (USA) will retire to Rosemont Stud in Victoria in 2016. A half-brother to dual Gr.1 winner and now successful young Widden Stud sire Star Witness, whose sire Starcraft (NZ) also stands at Rosemont alongside Toorak Toff, Nostradamus was a $500,000 Easter yearling in 2013 and provided his high profile shuttle sire with his first Australian winner. Still in training in late May, the four year-old has four wins and two seconds in 20 starts for earnings of $404,130. He will stand his first season at $8800 including GST. Nostradamus kicked off his career for Team Hawkes on January 18, 2014 with an easy win down the straight Flemington 1100m course, running 1:04.92 on a dead track to account for Jarklin by 2.25 lengths. He was awkwardly away but quickly mustered speed for Glen Boss and was always travelling well. “He wasn’t pretty out of the gates but I said to Bossy if something went wrong, don’t panic,” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said. He’s got a good turn of foot and if you watch the replay you can see how low he got. His whole action just dropped and he flattened out really well.” Nostradamus remained in Melbourne where he was fourth of 16 (two lengths) in the Blue Diamond PreludeGr.3 (1100m) behind Rubick and was then seventh of 16 in the Blue Diamond-Gr.1 (3.6 lengths) behind Earthquake on February 22. Off the scene until August 16, he won the San Domenico Stakes-Gr.3 (1100m), running a race record 1:03.63 on a good Rosehill track, beating Washington Heights and Law into the minors, the margins three quarters of a length, by a length. “I think he is going to get better the further they go because he is so relaxed, almost lazy, in what he does, but he still has the ability to let down like he did here,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes said after the Gr.3 win. “You have to remember that was only his fourth start and he is still learning.” Nostradamus was then seventh in the Run to the Rose-Gr.3 on a heavy track on August 30 and then struck a dead track when fifth of 15 in the Golden RoseGr.1, beaten just 2.1 lengths by Hallowed Crown on September 13. He was then runner-up to Brazen Beau in the Roman Consul-Gr.2 before an unplaced run in the Coolmore-Gr.1 on November 1. He was mid-field in the Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 behind Shamal Wind when he resumed on February 28, 2015 and then unplaced over 1100m at Flemington and in the Royal Sovereign-Gr.2 at Randwick before beating Time For War by three-quarters of a length in the Gold Coast Guineas-Gr.3 (1200m) on April 25 and then finishing mid-field in the BTC Cup-Gr.1. Nostradamus was a first-up second in Brisbane on August 29 and then unplaced in the Theo Marks-Gr.2 and City Tatts Lightning-LR on October 17 before his sale to Rosemont. Sun Stud's newcomers kept best company Sun Stud has signalled its commitment to the Australian breeding industry by adding a further two stallions to the two-state roster in 2016. The former Eliza Park International, which has recently been rebranded, will stand Caulfield Guineas placegetter and Golden Slipper fourth Ready For Victory in Victoria and Queensland Guineas winner and Blue Diamond runner-up Jabali in Queensland. Sun International, part of a group owned by Cheng Ting Kong, a businessman in his early 40s who races horses throughout Asia, purchased Eliza Park (renamed Eliza Park International) in mid-2013 and this year has rebranded it as Sun Stud. It has recently formed the Sun Club as an innovative way of supporting Ready for Victory and Jabali, offering the chance to secure lifetime breeding rights in the young sires for a modest additional outlay. “The premise for Sun Club is quite simple,” the stud’s sales and nominations manager Mark Lindsay said. “Basically, Sun Club members send one mare to Ready for Victory in 2016 for $16,500, which comprises his 2016 fee of $9900, plus $6600 for VOBIS Sires’ Scheme/Sun Club membership, or to Jabali for $9900, which is his service fee of $7700, plus $2200 Sun Club membership and payment is not due until you have a foal on the ground. Then you are open to send a mare for free in 2017 and 2018 and any member who fills the three nominations receives a lifetime breeding right to that stallion.”

From just 28 foals this Sunday Silence experiment produced 20 who remained in Australia including Australian Oaks winner Sunday Joy (dam of multiple Gr.1 winner More Joyous), black type producers Sunday Service and Sunday Valentine and stallions Silent Action, Sunday Knight and short-lived Any Given Sunday, along with Keep the Faith, who began his stud life at Adam Sangster’s Swettenham Stud in Victoria in 2006 and now stands at John and Laurie McCarthy’s at Greta West Stud. It’s hardly surprising that the Arrowfield principal was so keen on Sunday Silence, as he was a superb racehorse and sire, winning the Kentucky Derby-Gr.1 and Preakness-Gr.1 in 1989 and running second behind Easy Goer in the Belmont before beating that horse in the end of season Breeder’ Cup Classic-Gr.1. His love affair with the line continues in 2016 when he shuttles the Japanese and Australian Gr.1 winner Real Impact (JPN) (Deep Impact-Tokio Reality (USA) by Meadowlake) whose sire, a son of Sunday Silence, has inherited his own sire’s mantle as the champion stallion in Japan. Real Impact’s two Australian starts in March and April 2015 resulted in a win in the George Ryder Stakes-Gr.1, beating Criterion, and a second to Kermadec in the Doncaster Mile-Gr.1. The breeding of Trust in a Gust is all down to Adam Sangster who stood Keep the Faith when he retired to stud in 2006 after a career of 12 starts that netted five wins and two thirds, the best of his wins being the MRC Schweppervescence Cup-LR (1600m) at Caulfield and he was also fourth in the Canterbury Guineas-Gr.1. He was Gr.2 placed in the Kelso Stakes and won

an Allowance at Belmont in three starts in the US as a five year-old. He ran 1:06.82 in his 6f win at Belmont, wining by 2.5 lengths and set a new US turf record for the distance. Keep the Faith’s winning dam is a three-quarter sister to Gr.2 winner Always Fair and Listed winner Asaasy (both by Danzig) and half-sister to Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 runner-up Faithful Son (Zilzal). Her sire Dayjur (Danzig-Gold Beauty by Mr. Prospector) was a Horse of the Year in Britain and Champion European Sprinter with wins including the Prix de l’Abbaye-Gr.1, Nunthorpe Stakes-Gr.1 and Haydock Sprint Cup-Gr.1. Although he died young, he has become a noted broodmare sire and is bred on the Danzig/Buckpasser cross, similar to nine-times Australian Champion Sire Danehill (USA) (Danzig-Razyana by His Majesty).

Dash For Cash. His progeny have a winning distance index of 1325m. The pedigree of Dinkum Diamond is an interesting one as Dayjur’s third dam Minstrelete is by Round Table and from a daughter of Sir Gaylord, while Devaraja’s sire Sir Tristram (IRE) is by a son of Sir Gaylord and from a daughter of Round Table. This suggests further use of the Sir Tristam line across Trust in a Gust could be prudent (especially as Storm Cat’s dam is by Secretariat, a half-brother to Sir Gaylord), maybe using daughters of Lonhro or his short-lived brother Niello. Their dam is by a son of Mr. Prospector and doubling this horse also seems to work with Keep The Faith. Keep The Faith’s stakes winner from a daughter of Royal Academy son Bel Espirit is worth noting as a similar mating with Trust in a Gust should be even more powerful. Storm Cat’s second dam Crimson Saint is the dam of Royal Academy and Storm Cat’s sire Storm Bird and Royal Academy’s sire Nijinsky share many common ancestors. Of course Royal Academy (grandson) and Storm Cat (son) are from the Northern Dancer male line, a proven nick with Halo, whose dam Cosmah is a half-sister to Natalma, dam of Northern Dancer (and third dam of Danehill). The dam of Trust in a Gust arrived in Australia after Adam Sangster went to the dispersal of his late father Robert’s bloodstock interests at Keeneland in Kentucky in November 2007. Morning Devotion’s unraced daughter Humble Devotion is the dam of Group winner and producer Humble Eight, while First Night (Sadler’s Wells), a stakes placed daughter of Morning Devotion, is second dam of imported 2016 Doncaster Prelude-Gr.3 winner and The Metropolitan-Gr.1 third Havana Cooler (IRE) (Hurricane Run). This is also the family of Gr.1 winners Art Connoisseur and Saoirse Abu and Japanese Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 placed Shonan Mighty (by Sunday Silence son Manhattan Café). Morning Has Broken is a half-sister to US multiple Gr.1 winner and Joint Champion US 2YO Filly of 1978 It’s In The Air (Mr. Prospector-A Wind is Rising by Francis S.), dam of French Gr.2 winner Bitooh (Seattle Slew). This is family 4k, whose members also include Gr.1 winner Alverta (Flying Spur), whose third dam is It’s In The Air, and US and European Gr.1 winner Storming Home (Machiavellian). John Messara sent Alverta to Japan in 2015 where she was covered southern time by Horse of the Year and champion sire Deep Impact before return home. She has already had a filly by another Halo-line horse in More Than Ready

(USA) in 2013 and this youngster will race in Japan. The Soldier’s Tale-Subtle Breeze mating produced a filly, Down to Luck, unplaced in two starts and now a broodmare for Adam Sangster, so far producing colts by Kaphero and Keep The Faith before a cover by Master of Design in 2015. Subtle Breeze, whose sire Storm Cat (Storm Bird-Terlingua by Secretariat) was a Gr.1 winner before becoming Champion Sire in the US, produced Trust in a Gust in 2010, slipped in 2011 and then foaled colts by Equiano (FR) (The Show Goes On), Master of Design (Artistic Design) and Pierro, before producing a filly by Equiano in 2015. Subtle Breeze is also dam of the Elusive Quality (USA) gelding Seachantach (USA), foaled in 2006 and winner of four races in Ireland and the UAE. The Halo line has been successful in Australia, particularly through Vinery’s wonderful stallion More Than Ready (USA) (Southern Halo-Woodman’s Girl by Woodman) and that branch of the line now continues via that horse’s Golden Slipper-winning son Sebring (ex Purespeed by Flying Spur). Given the success of eight-times Gr.1 winner More Joyous (by More Than Ready from a daughter of Sunday Silence and carrying Halo 3mx3m) and my earlier comments about Flying Spur, it would be no surprise to see daughters of Sebring (Mr. Prospector 4mx4f) produce remarkable results when covered by Trust in a Gust (this would give Halo 4mx5m; Danzig 5mx6m), ditto daughters of More Than Ready. Courage and talent are qualities we all love in thoroughbreds and Trust in a Gust had them in spades. He won twice at the highest level and he has a really attractive pedigree. Standing on a modest fee of just $12,500 and with lifetime breeding rights available for $25,000 (including GST), he is quite capable of adding a bright new chapter to the Sangster family’s remarkable international success story. n

Juvenile stars join Vinery roster Vinery welcomes two newcomers to its stallion barn in the new season with the Scone nursery becoming home to dual Gr.1 winner Press Statement and Gr.2 winner Headwater. Both members of the Danehill tribe, Press Statement is a son of Yarraman Park’s boom young sire Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock), his first son at stud, and Headwater is by Darley’s international sire success Exceed and Excel. “We are delighted to be able to offer breeders these two exceptional colts in 2016,” Vinery general manager Peter Orton said. “We feel both exude the vital elements of race record, pedigree and physique, traits so necessary to upgrade their mares and make an impact at stud.”

Press Statement won six of his 11 starts for trainer Chris Waller and more than $1.8m and will stand at $27,500. His debut run gave indication of his obvious ability when he came from fifth at the 400m to score a 1.5 length victory over Volante in an 1100m juvenile event at Canterbury on April 29, 2015. Stepped up in class over 1350m at Rosehill on May 30, the colt was always in command, leading all the way, and he had a half-length to spare over Shards at the post. His third and final start as a juvenile came at Doomben on June 6 in the $600,000 J.J. Atkins StakesGr.1 (1600m) which he won by three-quarters of a length from Sagaronne after sitting off the pace and coming with a strong late charge, running 1:35.40. It was a tremendous effort to go from maiden to Gr.1 winner in just three starts and in winning the Doomben feature he emulated his short-lived halfbrother Pressday (Domesday), who won the race (then called the T.J. Smith Classic) in 2010 and stood just one season at stud in 2012, leaving 34 live foals, before his death the following January. His three year-old season began in more muted fashion on August 29, 2015 when he was runner-up to Exosphere in the Run to the Rose-Gr.2 (1.25 lengths) and then fifth to that horse in the Golden Rose-Gr.1 (1400m). He was back on track at his third start though, toying with his rivals when winning the Stan Fox Stakes-Gr.2 (1500m), also at Rosehill, on September 26, having three lengths on Shards as they passed the post in a win jockey Hugh Bowman described as “painless”. Taken to Caulfield for the $1m Guineas-Gr.1 on October 10, the son of Hinchinbrook made every post a winner, leading all the way beat Lizard Island by 1.75 lengths. Starting $2.50 favourite, he defied the pattern of racing at Caulfield prompting Chris Waller to comment, “He’s a good horse and that’s what good horses do, they change the trends.” Bowman called him a “star in the making” and said, “Although we had to ride him a bit out of his comfort zone, his class came to the fore.”
