MOVERS & SHAKERS by Sarah Peatling

S.H.

LANG LIN

S

ELF-made billionaire Lang Lin, better known to some as ‘Mr Wolf’, is a rising force between mainland China and the Australasian thoroughbred industry. It’s hard to describe what he does in this aspect in one word, but ‘enabler’ comes to mind because Mr Lang’s investments, vision and enthusiasm as a racehorse owner, racing industry developer and international connector, continues to inspire and create key business opportunities between China, New Zealand and Australia. The founder and chief executive of the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Group has spent more than $11m since 2012 shipping more than 800 New Zealand racehorses to China, to race and to breed from, with

a view to grow the domestic market in his homeland. At the same time he has introduced hundreds of Chinese visitors and investors to his great love of Australasia’s major bloodstock sales and racing carnivals. The highlight so far in Mr Lang’s journey ‘Down Under’ is his ownership of the Caulfield Cup and dual Derby winning hero, Mongolian Khan, a horse he describes as tough, fearless and his lucky charm.

Q: Mr Lang, how would you best describe yourself and where did your passion for thoroughbreds come from?

A: “I am a pure racing fan and horse lover. I am in a minority in China, being a Manchu. This ethnicity has a natural love towards horses. Racing is lots of fun, but I most enjoy watching thoroughbred horses fighting for the win.”

Q: You are a self-made billionaire with businesses in retail food, hospitality, construction and technology in China, what is the key to your success? A: “I think the key is to be honest to my friends and my business partners. I would rather suffer losses than profit at other people’s expense. I also

October 2016

believe in hard work and sometimes you do need a bit of luck as well.”

Q: You have a close working relationship with New Zealand Bloodstock and the wider Australasian industry. Why choose New Zealand as the country to buy your thoroughbred stock from? How did this relationship start? A: “Kiwi-bred horses are good quality and a reasonable price. Also, New Zealand is famous for breeding top stayers who win a lot of major classic races, especially in Australia. Importantly, there is the free-trade agreement between China and New Zealand since 2008, which means a zero tax rate to export thoroughbreds to China. That is why I started purchasing horses from New Zealand in 2012.”

Q: I understand you have a particular interest in racing stayers. What is it about the major classic races you admire so much? A: “I really like 2000m races and beyond. In China most of the featured races are staying races, and by watching the staying races you can enjoy the whole process a bit longer, compared to sprinting races. I think these distances are the ultimate test for a horse too. The winners of these distance races are classic and owning one winner, or more, is a very exciting thing.”

Q: One of the best and richest staying contests in the world is the $6.2m Melbourne Cup. Is it true that you’ve long held an obsession with Australia’s ‘race that stops a nation’? A: “Yes, I have been attracted to the Melbourne Cup for a long time now. Since I was young I’ve heard about this race, which stops the whole nation. I love its scale, prize money and the influence. It’s a very special day.”

Q: So does this mean the Melbourne Cup is the number one race in the world that you would like to win? A: “Like I said before, I love staying races but my favourite is the Melbourne Cup. That’s the one I’d love to win most. But it’s also one of the hardest to win!”

Q: How did you get the nickname ‘Mr Wolf’? A: “My last name is ‘Lang’, and in Chinese it means wolf, so my staff members call me this and it has caught on elsewhere.”

Q: Speaking of wolf, it’s been reported that you own some exotic animals at home in China. A: “Yes, that’s true. I’ve got falcons and wolves. They are intelligent animals, and well looked after.”

Q: Through your passion for horses and racing, and ability to identify and develop a business opportunity, you founded the ‘Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Group’ in 2006. Tell us a bit more about this vision and purpose of the group. A: “The Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Group focuses on the whole-industrial chain business model, and we get the local farms involved into our business by signing up contractors, which improves the local employment rate and the farms’ income.

The Rider Horse Group has now grown into six sections. The New Zealand branch, which is in charge of the horse exporting business where we import to breed, race and sell in China; Breeding Farm in Inner Mongolia; Rider Horse Racecourse in Inner Mongolia; Livestock Trade Market in Inner Mongolia; Rider Horse Feed Mill in Inner Mongolia; and Equestrian Club Management Company in Beijing and Jilin.”

Q: One of the achievements of the Rider Horse Group is the launch of International Mongolian Culture and Tourism Carnival, which is still in its infancy. How did your flagship racing carnival perform this year? A: “This year the carnival went pretty well. It’s a threeday-event with more than 30 teams from 11 provinces competing in China racing. There were many international visitors including 58 guests from New Zealand and 11 guests from Australia. We had celebrity performers entertain and on ‘New Zealand Racing Day’ we attracted more than 15,000 people. It was very successful and something to build on.”

Q: Is China set for a bright horseracing future? What do you hope for? A: “The economy in China is developing fast and the consumption ability is growing a lot. Yes, I do believe that horse racing in China will have a bright future, as people love racing, especially in the minority areas. “I hope that in the future, horse racing in China could be better organised and developed in line with the international racing industry. We’re only at a beginning stage but I have the sense of mission to make it better.”

Q: Let’s talk about your headline horse, Mongolian Khan. You purchased him at the Karaka NZB Ready To Run Sale along with five other horses, which also included a Chinese Derby winner. A: “I was really lucky to get Mongolian Khan. It was actually his movement at the breeze-up and his spirit that attracted me. He was striking. In total I bought six horses from that sale as I wanted a classic type. I kept three in New Zealand and sent three back to China. The one who won the Chinese Derby is by Iffraaj and in 2014 he won six races in a row. We’re still racing him; he won an 1800m race recently at Yulong Racecourse in Shanxi, which was exciting.”

Q: How special was it when Mongolian Khan won the 2015 New Zealand Derby and then backed it up weeks later with victory in the Australian Derby, becoming the first horse since the champion Bonecrusher (in 29 years) to win the Derby double? A: “It felt like my dream that had been in my mind for quite a long time finally came true. It was unbelievable joy.”

Q: Did you think he would come back as a four year-old and go on to win the $3.5m Caulfield Cup that same year? How did that Spring Racing Carnival victory feel? A: “I was very positive towards Mongolian Khan’s condition before the Caulfield Cup. He ran a nice third in the Caulfield Guineas and was proven over the distance of 2400m. We all felt he was a special horse

and looked forward to seeing him run in the Caulfield Cup. It was magnificent after he crossed the line that day. He didn’t let us down and I was very proud. The Spring Racing Carnival is one of world’s best events and to have a horse run during this time is a privilege.”

Q: Do you get nervous before these big races? A: “Yes I do get nervous, but also very excited as well.”

Q: Some experts say Mongolian Khan would have gone close to winning the 2015 Melbourne Cup had he not suffered a colic attack. Do you agree? Was that a sad moment for you to let go of the Melbourne Cup dream with him? A: “Yes I agree, it was a sad moment for all of us including Murray and Andrew, Opie, Sophia and Joe, all of our Rider Horse Group people and even many of my racing friends back in China, but we were very happy he was able to make a recovery.”

Q: Mongolian Khan is now standing at Windsor Park Stud and set for an exciting future at stud, with a book of 140 mares to cover in his first season. What does this horse mean to you and the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Group? A: “Mongolian Khan is like a lucky charm to me and to the Rider Horse Group. I told my staff that we must learn from him, for he is so tough and he doesn’t fear anything at the track. Also he is a milestone for the China racing industry.”

Q: You are an excellent ambassador for the Australasian thoroughbred industry. It’s been documented that you brought out 150 Chinese guests to 2015 Melbourne Cup Day, 50 to New Zealand Derby Day at Ellerslie and many other international visitors to the New Zealand Bloodstock sales. Would this be more than 300 people? A: “Yes it would be about that. I like introducing my friends, family and business partners to my passion and to share the excitement. It’s a wonderful industry with many opportunities.”

Q: Do you see China, New Zealand and Australia growing closer and doing more business together in the thoroughbred industry in the future? A: “Yes. It compares to the relationship with Ireland, USA and Japan. China has a strong bond with New Zealand and Australia, especially in terms of horse racing. These three countries have been communicating for many years and have already established a great partnership. “Back in China, Mr Zhang’s Yulong Investments and the Rider Horse Group also support each other by sending horses to compete at each other’s race meetings too. Horseracing is an international exchange that brings many people together, and we can all learn from each other.” n

2016 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE

NZB Ready to Run Sale’s Racetrack Results Speak for Themselves

With another season of spectacular racetrack success, New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale has further enhanced its position as Australasia’s premier go-to destination for buyers looking for two-year-olds that are impeccably prepared and ready to perform to a high level. It is the only Sale of its kind in Australasia to yield Group 1 success over the last four years, during which time its alumni have racked up a remarkable 16 wins at that level. Four of those Group 1 victories came during the 2015-16 season. Leading the way for the second straight year was Mongolian Khan. The son of Holy Roman Emperor, purchased by Mr Lang Lin’s Rider Horse Group for $220,000 at the 2013 Ready to Run Sale, added the world-famous Caulfield Cup to his dual classic success in the previous season’s New Zealand Derby and Australian Derby. Ridden by his regular partner Opie Bosson, Mongolian Khan was prominent throughout the gruelling 2400-metre test before his class and stamina shone through down the straight, outfighting an international field to become the first New Zealand-trained Caulfield Cup winner since Ethereal in 2001. The win earned Mongolian Khan the title of New Zealand Horse of the Year for the second consecutive season, and he has now taken up stud duties at Windsor Park Stud.

Mongolian Khan was trained in Cambridge by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman and this training duo enjoyed two further Group 1 victories in Melbourne last season with another Ready to Run Sale graduate. Turn Me Loose (NZ) (Iffraaj), who won the New Zealand 2000 Guineas the previous season, stepped up and became one of Australasia’s premier sprinter-milers with outstanding displays in the Emirates Stakes at Flemington and Futurity Stakes at Caulfield. Purchased for $52,500 at the 2013 Ready to Run Sale, Turn Me Loose has amassed more than $1.5 million for his owners Lindsay De Souza, Todd Hartley, Doug Painter, Paul Vawdrey, Jim Lark, Scott Brown and Jim Robinson. Turn Me Loose was voted New Zealand’s Champion Sprinter and Champion Middle-Distance Horse for 2015-16. The fourth Group 1 win for the Sale last season was produced by Dukedom (NZ) in the Levin Classic at Trentham. Young trainer Steven Cole paid $65,000 for the Bachelor Duke gelding who would go on to provide the 24-year-old with a Group 1 win less than two years into his career. But recent big-race success by Ready to Run Sale graduates is by no means limited to that high-class quartet. The Falkirk gelding Well Done (NZ), purchased for $90,000 at the 2013 Ready to Run Sale, rose to stardom with a Sgp-1 Singapore Derby victory that had to be seen to be believed.

2016 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE

He came from nowhere with an enormous finishing burst, sailing past fellow Karaka graduate Majestic Moments to win by a widening three-quarters of a length. The win was Well Done’s seventh from 17 career starts, having previously won the Patron’s Bowl over 1600 metres, and took him past $1 million in prize-money. Fellow Singapore galloper Debt Collector (NZ), by Thorn Park, was purchased by trainer Cliff Brown for $120,000 at the 2014 Ready to Run Sale. He has scored five impressive victories in 2016 including the Sgp-1 Singapore Guineas, Sgp-2 Singapore Three-Year-Old Classic and the Sgp-3 Jumbo Jet Trophy and Brown considers him a top Derby prospect. Additional Group 1-winning graduates of the Ready to Run Sale over the past four seasons include Gaultier, Albany Reunion (Fastnet Rock), Atlante (Fastnet Rock), Glorious Days (Hussonet), Linton (Galileo), Nashville (NZ) (Darci Brahma) and Sangster (NZ) (Savabeel). Australian buyers have long recognised the quality available at the Sale and have been extremely active in recent seasons. Last year they purchased 61 horses for a total of $6,693,000. The leading buyer from Australia was Mauro Poletti and Amanda Turner who purchased four horses for a total of $875,000. This year’s catalogue has attracted 552 two-year-olds prepared by New Zealand’s best horse educators. A wide range of 123 sires from New Zealand and Australia are represented. The catalogue features 57 siblings to stakes winners including siblings to Group 1 winners Veloce Bella, Magic Cape, Captivate, Miss Mossman, Ruud Awakening, MacO’Reilly, I Do, Kirramosa, Irish Fling, Peggy Jean and Allez Wonder. Buyers will also find the progeny of 60 stakes winners including Group 1-winning dams Captivate, Honor Babe, Honor Bound, Prize Lady and Sharvasti. New Zealand sires represented in the catalogue include Darci Brahma, Iffraaj, Jimmy Choux, Keeper, Makfi, O’Reilly, Pentire, Per Incanto, Pins, Pour Moi, Power, Reliable Man, Savabeel, Shocking, Showcasing, Swiss Ace, Tavistock and Zacinto.

“The win earned Mongolian Khan the title of New Zealand Horse of the Year for the second consecutive season, and he has now taken up stud duties at Windsor Park Stud.” There is also a wide range of Australian sires such as All Too Hard, Americain, Animal Kingdom, Choisir, Encosta De Lago, Exceed And Excel, Foxwedge, Hinchinbrook, Hussonet, I Am Invincible, Manhattan Rain, Medaglia d’Oro, Pierro, Redoute’s Choice, Smart Missile, Snitzel, So You Think, Starspangledbanner, Stryker, Street Cry and Written Tycoon.

Every horse is given the opportunity to Breeze Up at Te Rapa Racecourse, held on 17 and 18 October, with the final 200 metres of their work timed and filmed. Breeze Up clips will be available to view on the NZB website or can be requested on DVD. New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale of Two-YearOlds will be held on 16 and 17 November at Karaka from 10am each day with catalogues available now .

2016 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE

DIAMOND LODGE

STORY BY RENÉE GEELEN

Diamond Lodge is a vendor with a strong record Recent graduates from Diamond Lodge’s Ready to Run drafts include Avondale Cup-Gr.2 winner Sacred Master (who also won the Newcastle Gold Cup last month); Castletown S-L winner Leeds, and Macau Listed winner Mission Well. Throw in New Zealand Derby placegetter Dee I Cee, as well as Gr.1 placed Mighty Solomon; and Diamond Lodge is a vendor with a strong record. In 2016, Diamond Lodge will bring a draft of 35 young horses to the Ready to Run Sale. A half-brother to Gr.1 winner Captivate is Lot 103. Their dam, Cappie, is an unraced half-sister to Gr.1 winner Culminate, and this is the family of the afore-mentioned Sacred Master. A pedigree that is hitting headlines in Australia is that of Lot 6. By Sebring, this colt is a three-quarter brother to recently retired Champion Racehorse Criterion (by Sebring). The dam of Lot 6 is Gr.2 winner Varenna Miss (by Redoute’s Choice), whose first foal is a winner. This is a family on the move with many new stakes winners in recent times. Another well-related colt is Lot 444 who is a half brother to Gr.2 winner Fursa. This colt is by Snitzel from Red Princess, a winning Red Ransom mare who has left two stakes horses. Champion Sire Fastnet Rock has Lot 196, a colt from Gr.2 winner Everswindell. She has started her broodmare career with a bang and both her runners are stakes placed winners. This is the family of Best Yet to Come; an omen perhaps. Fastnet Rock’s Gr.1 winning son Rock ‘n’ Pop has two horses from his first crop in this draft. Lot 393 is by American stakes winner One Man to Beat, from the family of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Caressing. Lot 100 is a half-brother to stakes placed Elusive Red, from the family of Gr.1 winner Omnicorp, and recent group winner Abidewithme. High Chaparral, sire of So You Think, Dundeel, and many other great colts, has Lot 110, a gelding who is a half-brother to South African Listed winner Purely Atomic, from the family of Gr.1 winner Imperial Beauty. The other is Lot 57, a colt first foal, from Ardeche, a stakes placed daughter of Diamond Like from the famous Eight Carat family. Leading First Season Sire in NZ in 2014/15, Showcasing, has two lots in this draft including Lot 143, a half-brother to Gr.2 winner Atlantis Dream from the family of Gr.1 winner Bulla Borghese (who recently left group winner Bound for Earth). The other, Lot 398, is a colt out of Orinda, a young winning O’Reilly half-sister to Gr.3 winner Mr Ubiquitous.

Criterion Brilliant young sire Tavistock has three lots in this draft, headlined by Lot 309, a colt out of an unraced Zabeel mare who is a three-quarter-sister to multiple Gr.1 placed Starina. This is the family of Gr.1 winner Penny Edition. Lot 420 is out of Pinzee, a 12 race winner who was also stakes placed; while Lot 447 is out of Ria’s Pride, a Savabeel half-sister to two group winners from the family of Our Tristalight.

family of Charge Forward, Diamond Cove, Donna Natalia and Sydney’s Dream. Lot 213 is a colt from a young halfsister to multiple stakes winner Jimando from the European family of Gr.1 winner Rosefinch. Also of interest is the colt, Lot 502, by Reliable Man’s sire Dalakhani from stakes placed Sobraine; making him a half-brother to stakes placed Boomarang Deluxe.

Lot 261 is by Gr.1 sire Darci Brahma from multiple Listed winner Heureka. She won seven races and her first four foals are all winners. This is the family of Dame Cath and Red Lord.

Sires with their oldest local crop having just turned three include Jimmy Choux, whose colt, Lot 97, is a half-brother to group placed Red Peony (now racing in Hong Kong). This is the strong Australian family that includes Malaguerra, Aloha, Tennessee Morn, and Tennessee Vain. Lot 55 is by proven sire Dalghar, whose oldest NZ crop are three year-olds, and this colt is out of Appleton’s Lass. She is a young winner of four races, and half-sister to stakes placed Piconeach who went to stud in the USA and has left Gr.2 winner Havelock.

First season sires are well represented here as well. Power, a Gr.1 winner at two and three, kicked off his stallion career quickly with his debut two year-old runner winning over 790m. He has Lot 295, a colt from a full sister to Gr.1 winners St. Reims and Champagne (both by Zabeel). Golden Slipper winner Pierro is sire of Lot 432, a colt from USA import Promptness who is a half-sister to five stakes winners. Azamour has Lot 222, a colt from Franny who is a full-sister to Gr.1 winner Forte dei Marmi. KAMADA PARK

STORY BY RENEE GEELEN

Kamada Park’s debut draft will showcase ten lots “A big, tall boy, a real staying type.” A gelding by Playmaker, Lot 384, is an interesting prospect. His young dam, Mystic Fire, is from the family of Gr.3 winner Sybeel; while his sire is closely related to Auckland Cup winner Senator. "A good sized gelding, he is immature but will grow into a nice horse" Lot 152 should appeal to buyers from Singapore and Hong Kong, as his sire Falkirk has left both a Hong Kong Derby winner (Fay Fay) and a Singapore Derby winner (Well Done). Out of Cullever, a young mare who won four races, this family illustrates soundness throughout, and goes back to St. Leger winner Thousand Veils. “A well-muscled, compact, strong, good moving type.” Lot 408 is the first foal of winning mare Party Tricks, by El Maggiore. This is a wonderful family, with the second dam being a winning three quarter sister to the grand Melbourne Cup winner and Australian Horse of the Year Let’s Elope. She has proven to be an excellent broodmare leaving Adelaide Cup winner Outback Joe and Gr.2 winner Ustinov, as well as the dam of Gr.3 winner Let’s Make Adeal. “This filly stands over good ground and still has a lot of growing to do.”

2016 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE

KILMORE FARM

STORY BY RENEE GEELEN

Great spread of proven and emerging stallions Kilmore Farm has presented only two Ready To Run Drafts, in 2014 and 2015. Already the first draft, from three offered, has produced stakes placed winner Ragnaar (Roc De Cambes) and debut winner St Henri (O’Reilly). Michelle Norman, of Kilmore Farm believes, “This years draft is shaping up to be a group of youngsters with great racing potential. All from families that are producing current winners across Australia, New Zealand and Asia. And in addition by Sires with proven success and quality, and young Sires that are really making great impacts on the international racing scene. The draft caters for the needs of all buying benches of the Ready To Run Sale. In 2016, Kilmore Farm presents a draft of sixteen colts and geldings – their biggest draft by far – and many successful stallions are featured here. Among them is a colt by sire of Gr.1 winners Commands, Lot 461, from stakes winner and Gr.1 placed O’Reilly mare Salsa. She is the dam of South African stakes winner Diamond King and four other winners. Another well-related colt is Lot 120; a half-brother to Gr.2 winner and million dollar earner Fontein Ruby. This colt is by Master of Design from the family of Fields of Omagh, Malcolm, and Infinite Grace. The other Savabeel, Lot 89, is out of a winning O’Reilly mare who is a half-sister to Gr.3 winner Zanetta (dam of Gr.2 winner in Singapore Titanium). Snitzel is a sire on the rise, and his colt, Lot 67, is out of Aussie Christmas who is a half-sister to triple Gr.1 winner Harlan’s Holiday. He is a successful sire, and that should add to this colt’s appeal. Tavistock can do no wrong at the moment with the likes of Tarzino, Volkstok’n’barrell, Werther, Tavago, etc, and he has three lots in this draft worth inspecting. Lot 52 is the second foal of Anzac Green, from the family of international traveller, Gr.2 winner, Gr.1 placed Anchor In. Lot 252 is from Half Irish, who won four races and descends from stakes winner Ellery Jane from the family of Goodwood H-Gr.1 winner Centisle. 2016 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE

KILGRAVIN LODGE

STORY BY KRISTEN MANNING

Well rounded draft at Kilgravin There is optimism leading into this year's New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale and Kilgravin Lodge's Eion Kemp is looking forward to a busy sale with a lovely range of youngsters, a draft he is extremely happy with. "It's a well rounded draft with a good mixture of stallions," he said, adding that judging by recent sales in New Zealand there should be strength in the buying ranks. "I have found it very difficult to buy this year, whether it be weanlings or yearlings," he said. "All the sales have been strong and hopefully that trend continues at this sale." There are a number of highlights amongst the Kilgravin draft including "a stand-out" colt by Singapore Horse Of The Year Super Easy out of the Almutawakel mare Nova. "He is a very nice moving horse who does everything easily," Kemp said of the chestnut bred on the successful Danehill/Machiavellian (both stallions descendants of the great mare Natalma) cross. "Before now I had not had a lot to do with the Cape Blanco breed but we've got a couple of of them this year and I am impressed."

Super Easy

In particular a colt out of Hang Seng, a Black Minnaloushe half-sister to multiple Group One winner Wall Street. "It is early days but he has been showing us quite a bit." Hailing from the family of the legendary Bold Ruler, the chestnut is line-bred to the prolific half-brothers Secretariat and Sir Gaylord, also boasting a 4m x 5m cross of the excellent mare Doubly Sure. Also nicely bred is a Cape Blanco colt out of the Dehere mare Trust from the family of Hong Kong star Fairy King Prawn. He too boasts Secretariat and Sir Gaylord strains as well as a 7f x 7f cross of the fine mare Good Example. Another to catch the eye is a "very athletic" Sebring colt out of the Fastnet Rock mare Wynnstay Avenue, a 3/4 sister to stakes winning juvenile Chickens. With Makfi doing such a good job his daughter out of the stakes placed Encosta de Lago mare Potions is bound to prove popular. "She is not an overly big filly but she is strong," Kemp said of the descendant of terrific mare Deck The Halls. Another good prospect for those looking for a well bred filly is a filly from the final crop of Commands, a member of the prolific Corn family. "She has a lovely long striding action." A striking dark filly, she is out of Donna Sienna (already dam of three winners) by Red Ransom, noting that Commands has sired two stakes winners out of his daughters. Smart Missile is a young stallion in form and Kemp is "very happy" with his daughter of the Dehere mare Bandolera. "She is a real three-year-old Classic type." Meanwhile "one of the stand-outs on pedigree" is an Iffraaj colt out of the Danehill mare Destined who is well and truly proving her worth at stud having already produced four winners including the New Zealand Filly Of The Year Fix and the South African Derby (Gr.1, 2450m) runner-up Galileo's Destiny. Boasting a pedigree of considerable depth, he is line-bred to the outstanding mares Natalma and Tamerett (grandam of Gone West and dam of Known Fact). Also well related is a fellow Iffraaj, a filly out of the Dansili mare Glorious Summer, half-sister to the four times Group

Cape Blanco winner Doctor Fremantle. Her pedigree combines the wonderful 3/4 brothers The Minstrel and Nijinsky II. There are only a couple more crops of the reliably classy Hussonet to come through and his son out of the three times winner Exalted Dream is well worth a look. "His dam is out of the terrific broodmare Alleged Lady who produced three stakes winners." Included in that tally is the Adelaide Cup (Gr.1, 3200m) winner Exalted Time. This colt is bred on a 4f x 4m cross of Hussonet's second dam sire Hoist The Flag and it is well worth noting that Hussonet has sired four stakes winners line-bred to him. Fellow proven stallion Reset is also represented, a colt out of the Storm Cat mare Lucky Be Lucky who has already produced the stakes placed winners Kolonel Kev and Santangelo. Niagara's first crop have impressed Kemp who takes three of the breed to the sale including a colt out of the city winning Not A Single Doubt mare Not A Dancer.

The promising Per Incanto is also well represented in the Kilgravin draft with four nice youngsters including two geldings from the ever flourishing Eight Carat family and a colt out of a half-sister to the stakes winners Happy Paint and War Paint. A couple of Alamosas are also on offer as is a Nadeem colt out of the stakes placed Ima Lady, a Nicconi grandson of the dual Oaks winner Zacheline, a Road To Rock gelding out of a half-sister to Irish Fling, a Mastercraftsman colt out of a halfsister to dual Group One winner Jolly Old Mac, a Sepoy colt out of the stakes placed Mabsam, a Keeper gelding out of a half-sister to triple Group winner Postmans Daughter, a Rock 'N' Pop colt out of the stakes placed Russian, a Postponed gelding out of the stakes placed Are You Devious, an Ocean Park grandson of dual Group winner Starcent, a Highly Recommended colt out of the stakes placed Five Coats and a Pour Moi gelding out of a full sister to the Group winners Callwood Dancer and Contredanse from the female line that produced Frankel.

2016 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE

OHUKIA LODGE

STORY BY KRISTEN MANNING

High class thoroughbred operation "A really strong, professional running type" is the description for a Makfi gelding out of the dual Group Two winning Danasinga mare Sarajay, Like Makfi's outstanding Australian runner Raw Impulse, he boasts a duplication of the great Mill Reef. Pentire has worked very well with the family of Testa Rossa mare Aosta and she has a colt by Pentire's son He's Remarkable. Aosta's half-sister is the two times Group winning Pentire mare Zanna and also from this family is Pentire Listed winner Nigelissima. Thewayyouare colt out of the city placed Encosta de Lago mare Baby Gangster from the family of one of Sydney's best current gallopers Hauraki. This is the family that also produced Eight Carat whose Group One daughter Diamond Lover is third dam of a Cape Blanco colt out of Cool Diamond. Also of interest is a Guillotine half-brother to the Listed winner Castle Heights out of the Volksraad mare Caernarfon, half-sister to six times Group winner Batavian. Tavistock - Nightingale Island colt, sold at last year’s Ready To Run.

Big things are happening at Ohukia Lodge, Jamie and Chanel Beatson are in the midst of setting up a high class thoroughbred operation on 62 acres on Lake Karapiro, Cambridge. Already up and running, Ohukia is home to a 1200m grass and sand track and a "big 20 horse barn" is in the process of being built. "It will be pristine," Jamie said, "it is beautiful flat land, we are starting from scratch and we are not taking any short cuts." Previously working in partnership with his cousin Sam, Jamie is looking forward to the challenges of his own business which is very much a family operation. Jamie and Chanel are extremely happy with their Ready To Run draft which consists of twenty "very nice horses." "It is a good, even draft and we are looking forward to showcasing them at Karaka," Jamie said. One of the Ohukia draft highlights is a member of the first crop of the five times Group One winner Pierro. Bred on the successful Lonhro/Nijinsky II cross, he is a son of the dual stakes winning Generous mare Tingirana whose first three to race are all winners including the multiple city winner Gingerboy.

"He is a really gorgeous horse, absolutely stunning. And he is already showing us a lot of ability." Also impressing is a colt by outstanding stallion Tavistock out of the two times winning Cape Cross mare Shibboleth, half-sister to the stakes placed Melody, dam of the Listed winner Phrases. Like Tavistock's Australian Derby (Gr.1-2400m) winner Tavago line-bred to Blushing Groom, the bay is "a really nice two-year-old type, a little powerhouse." Also on offer are two "striking" sons of high class stallion Savabeel, the first of which is a colt out of the dual Group Two winning Danasinga mare Due Diligence, half-sister to the Singapore Derby (Sgp-Gr.1, 2000m) winner Dreyfuss. He is bred on a 3m x 4m cross of Sir Tristram and it is worth noting that Savabeel has sired seven stakes winners, including the Group One gallopers Diademe and Sound Proposition, line-bred to that legendary stallion. The second Savabeel is a gelding out of Kahurangi, an Elusive Quality half-sister to the Hong Kong star Green Birdie. Over from Australia is another "very impressive type" by All Too Hard, the already named Copper Mine who is out of the three times winning Sequalo mare Mountain, a 3/4 sister to dual stakes winner Cariad.

2016 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE

PARADISE FARM INTERNATIONAL

STORY BY RENEE GEELEN

Paradise Farm International The debut draft for Paradise Farm International consists of eight colts with a range of pedigrees to suit all buyers. Proprietor Julian Czerpak said “We selected these horses as weanlings and yearlings specifically for this sale; and in particular for the strong Asian market. To ensure these horses will meet with buyers’ criteria we put them all through intensive vet checks prior to purchasing them. Each passed their x-rays and have had no issues in their work since then. Paradise Farm International is a new business that builds on my experience in this industry. I grew up in the breeding industry in Ireland and worked in the Ready to Run market there. When I moved down here, I saw that this market suits the New Zealand style of horse well, and it’s a natural sale for me to do business. I hope to build from this first draft into the future.” The draft opens with Lot 34, a well-related son of proven Gr.1 sire Alamosa. This colt is the second foal of Zenada, a halfsister to multiple Australian stakes winner Storm Signal, herself the dam of recent stakes winner Destruction. Other good horses in this family include Fork Tongue, Generalife, Dashing Granada and Northeast Sheila. “This is a forward, two year-old type.” Also by Toorak H-Gr.1 winner Alamosa is Lot 476, the first foal of Sharp Gal, an unraced Pins mare from the family of Gr.1 winner Planet Rock, as well as Sabrage, Pinnacles, Galroof, Gorky Park, etc. “A very sharp colt. Pins has done well in Hong Kong, and this colt should be well placed there.” Proven sire Iffraaj had a great season in 2015/16, being crowned Champion Sire of 2YOs, and his colt, Lot 101, is out of the group placed mare Cape Princess, who has already left a stakes placed full sister to this colt. The nicks in the family work, as Cape Princess is a full sister to multiple stakes winner Sircross. “A big scopey horse from a lovely strong pedigree.” Sons of Fastnet Rock are flying at the moment, and Highly Recommended is a Gr.2 winner by the Champion Sire whose first crop have just turned two. Lot 500 is a fascinating pedigree, as this colt is out of a stakes winning mare who has left five winners from as many to race. This colt’s second dam is also a stakes winner. “A quality type with lots of natural speed. Compact and athletic.”

Paradise Farm

INTERNATIONAL

Alamosa The other colt by a first season sire in this draft is Lot 464, by Encosta de Lago’s Gr.2 winner Niagara. This colt is from Santorini, a half-sister to Gr.1 placed First Touch and to the dam of South African group winner and now sire Curved Ball.

Gr.2 winner The Hassler. He also has several stakes placed horses that will improve again with age. His colt, Lot 122, is the second foal from Chickilicous, a four-race winner by Stark South. Chickilicious is a half sister to stakes winner and Gr.1 placed Pinsoir.

“A robust sort. Very strong colt, a forward type who is working well.”

“A late two year-old type, who has a good amount of scope about him.”

Lot 262 is by Showcasing who recently left a Gr.1 winner at Royal Ascot, and has started his southern hemisphere career with a bang as the Champion Sire of 2YOs in 2014/15. This colt is the third foal of Highest Bid, an unraced Montjeu mare from an imported European family that includes several stakes winners such as Gr.1 placed, Listed winner Scott’s View. “A neat, sharp type of horse. Precocious.”

Roc de Cambes is another stallion who has started his career well, with a dual Gr.3 winner in Australia as well as Gr.1 placed Reminisce. Lot 129 is the third foal of Classy Bawn, an unraced Pins mare who is closely related to several USA Gr.1 winners, including Kentucky Oaks winner Blush with Pride, Rags to Riches, Jazil, Peeping Fawn and Thewayyouare (who stands at Coolmore Ireland, and shuttled to Windsor Park Stud).

Shocking’s first crop hit the ground running with a classic winner; New Zealand Oaks-Gr.1 winner Fanatic, as well as

“A classic type who has thrown to Sadler’s Wells, and who could get out as a late two year-old and go on with it.”

PHOENIX PARK

STORY BY RENEE GEELEN

Working nicely and going forward Phoenix Park continue to sell quality racehorses, with yet more stakes winners such as Listed winners Elusive Catch, Bobo so Cute, the highly promising River Amazing, and recent winners Chase, Lucky Lincoln. Phoenix Park sold Gr.1 winners Marju Snip, Able One, Lims Prestige and Rockdale from previous Ready to Run drafts. In 2016, Phoenix Park will present another quality draft of eight two year-olds at the NZB Ready to Run Sale. Janine Dunlop said “This is a group of neat, tidy, correct types who are working nicely and are going forward in the way that buyers should like.” There are only two fillies in this draft, led by Lot 81, a daughter of Champion sire O’Reilly and a half-sister to stakes placed Al Qurhah (by Stravinsky). She is from Danehill mare Belleville, who is a full sister to Listed winner Cassis. This is the family of Cheveley Park-Gr.1 winner Durtal, as well as Queensland Derby-Gr.1 winner Magicool.

A full brother to VRC Oaks-Gr.1 winner Kirramosa, Lot 227, is by proven sire Alamosa from Freyja, who is out of NZ Filly of the Year and Gr.1 winner Olga’s Pal. “This gelding will appeal to discerning buyers. He is an evenly grown horse with plenty of natural muscle about him.” Showcasing was the leading first season sire in NZ in 2014/15, and has since left a Gr.1 winner at Royal Ascot. His colt, Lot 92, is from the family of Australian Champion 2YO Burst. Her descendants included recent Gr.2 winner Éclair Choice, as well as South African Gr.3 winner Winter Burst. “An athelitic compact type, whose family throws plenty of speed. Showcasing can also do that, and this colt looks the part.” By Zacinto, Lot 488, is a gelding from a winning Volksraad mare who is a half-sister to four stakes winners, including Gr.2 winner Sorrento, dam of Australian group winners Girl Gone Rockin’ and Syreon.

“A very unique, classic type of filly, with a lovely pedigree.”

“A really strong, well developed type who is out of a Volksraad mare, just like multiple Gr.1 winner Kawi. He is by the young hotpot stallion in Zacinto.”

The only other filly in the draft is Lot 381, by All American from an Exceed and Excel half-sister to stakes winner Pinezero. This is the family of Schubert, Recast and Gonski.

Lot 102 is a gelding by Guillotine from a young multiple winning Cape Cross mare, who is from the family of twice USA Gr.1 winner Alpha.

“This is a big strong raw boned type, who looks likely to make a cracking autumn 2yo.”

“His dam won three in Singapore. A very correct running type, with a great outlook.”

Kirramosa Freshman sires Burgundy and Niagara are represented in this draft. The gelding, Lot 360, by Niagara is from the family of Gr.1 winner Tit for Taat and Fashion Plate. Well-bred Burgundy has Lot 301, a gelding out of a half-sister to stakes placed Congaline. This is the family of Gr.1 sire Pins. “The Niagara is a powerful, robust, forward type of horse. The Burgundy is a nicely balanced athletic type, and his sire had his first trial winner the other day.”

2016 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE

RIVERROCK FARM

STORY BY RENEE GEELEN

Debut draft definitely worth inspecting The debut draft for Riverrock Farm is small and select but definitely worth inspecting with each of the six lots having a lovely pedigree to support them. Proprietor Chad Ormsby needs no introduction to New Zealand buyers as the former co-trainer, with Mike Moroney, at Ballymore Stables. “I have prepared horses for this sale for many years for other people, and I used that experience to purchase horses that have the physical type that suits this sale. Each horse in this draft is going through their work in a solid fashion, with their own personalities, and are learning the task ahead well,” said Ormsby. Lot 12 is a colt by Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 winner Swiss Ace who has started his stud career well with the likes of Secret Spirit, Passing Shot and Ichiban. This colt is the second foal of Victim of Love, a winning Pentire mare who is a half-sister to Gr.2 winner Divine Rebel and stakes placegetters Adulterer, Saint or Sinner, and Vincent Street. Their dam is Gr.1 winner It’s My Sin. “Typical of the sire, this colt has a great nature. He’s a very forward, running type that will fashion into an autumn two year-old.” By first season sire Burgundy, Lot 175, is the first foal of Divine Brown. She is a winning Savabeel mare whose dam is stakes winner Montreal Gold (by Gold Brose). This is a strong running family that goes back to Special to Me, a stakes winner of nine races. “By Burgundy who showed plenty of speed, buyers won’t have to wait long for this colt. He is well-grown with a mature frame. He has a good action and looks the part of a read-made two year-old.” Next through the ring for Riverrock Farm are three colts by Champion European 3YO Miler Rip Van Winkle. Ormsby

Riversley Park debuted at this sale last year with an impressive draft. In their second Ready to Run Sale draft, they’ve gone even better with 34 horses sired by the best stallions across Australasia. Last year’s draft already has runs on the board with both Gunn Island (Written Tycoon) and Tak Fai of Pins (Pins) winning on debut last month. “This is a nice line of horses that will appeal to a wide range of markets. There are nicely bred ones for buyers looking for an investment, and many forward types which will appeal to racehorse owners,” said Sam Beatson. Headlining this draft are two half-brothers to recent Gr.1 winners. Lot 303, a colt by Beautiful Crown from Lady of Love, is a half-brother to ATC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 winner Peggy Jean, from the family of Mrs Onassis, Missrock, Aussies Love Sport, Able Choice and Lady Jakeo. Lot 273 is a colt by freshman sire Rock ‘n’ Pop from stakes placed Irish Belle, who is the dam of Telegraph Handicap-Gr.1 winner Irish Fling. This is a strong family featuring Society Beau, Society Bay, Sandblaster and dual Gr.1 winner Final Destination. Another well related colt is Lot 130 by emerging top sire Tavistock, from two year-old winner Clatitude, who is the

dam of 15 race winners and Gr.2 winner Ginga Dude. Also by Tavistock is Lot 291, out of winning mare Keep Seeking; and Lot 322, a half brother to stakes winner Harb and stakes placed Cortado from the family of Filante Etoile and triple Gr.1 winner Star Dancer. Champion Sire O’Reilly is represented by two lots. Lot 108 is a gelding out of Catalina, a young group placed mare from the family to Gr.1 winner Seamist; while Lot 190 is a colt from winning mare Elusive Dreams who is closely related to Dopff, Pussy Willow, Pussy O’Reilly, Valpolicella, Vavsour and Vilvanova. Champion Sire Fastnet Rock has Lot 426, a colt from winning USA mare Pretty Proud, who is a half-sister to Belmont Futurity S-Gr.1 winner Whywhywhy and Gr.2 winner Spellbinder. NZ Champion Sire Savabeel is represented by Lot 526, a gelding out of winning mare Starring, who is a half-sister to stakes winner Game On. NZ Champion 2YO Filly Iflooxcouldkill is from this family. Boom sire Written Tycoon has two lots in this draft. Lot 289 is a colt from Gr.2 placed Katherine Gold, from an imported family that includes last year’s European Champion Stayer Simple Verse. The other is Lot 257, a colt from the family of Gr.1 winner Roman Emperor.

Riversley Park 42 Lynd Road RD1 Ohaupo Sam Beatson +64 27 229 1130 Email: riversleypark@xtra.co.nz

Snitzel, the heir apparent to Redoute’s Choice, has Lot 533, a colt out of Talus who is a half-sister to dual Gr.1 winner Virage de Fortune and Gr.3 winner Avenue. Both Manhattan Rain and Al Maher are successful sires in Australia, and they are represented in this draft by Lot 429 and Lot 454. Lot 429, by Manhattan Rain, is a half-brother to stakes placed Miracle the Second, from the family of Macau Derby winner Sunshine Sure Win. Al Maher’s Lot 454 is a gelding from a half-sister to Gr.3 placed Ruben from the family of million dollar earner Monopolize. High Chaparral’s colts excel on the track, and Lot 238 is a great opportunity. This colt is a half-brother to Chop Chop, who ran fourth in the New Zealand Oaks-Gr.1. This colt is from a wonderful Gr.1 quality family that includes Black Mamba, Roman Emperor, and Tully Thunder. Per Incanto is sire of Gr.1 winner Dal Cielo; and has two lots in this draft. 2016 NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK READY TO RUN SALE

APEX RATINGS FOR NEW ZEALAND Highly respected pedigree analyst Bill Oppenheim, formerly of the USA but now resident in Perthsire Scotland, was among the many thoroughbred commentators who felt that there were serious shortcomings in traditional sire lists. However, Bill decided to do something about the situation, so a decade or more ago he developed the first APEX-Annual Progeny Earnings index ratings, which have now become almost universally accepted as one of the best and most reliable indicators of stallion performance. They were not available in Australia until 2006, but with Bill’s kind permission and through our joint venture with The Australian Bloodhorse Review, Bloodhound is now able to present APEX ratings for many countries. Oppenheim decided to divide the population of prizemoney earners in a particular season in each jurisdiction, or country, into three bands. The top 2% of earners are the “A runners” , the next 2% are the “B runners” and the next 4% are the “C runners” . In other words the A+B+C runners combined make up the top 8% (2+2+4) of earners in a particular jurisdiction, country, each season. This masterstroke achieves a number of objectives in one. It largely removes the bias in prizemoney based lists created by a relatively small number of very rich races. It largely removes the regional and political element of stakes races which could be either a regional bias or a national one. Finally it helps to compare stallion merit across jurisdictions, or countries, with vastly differing prizemoney levels. The ratings are calculated in the following way. “A” runners are the top 2% of prizemoney earners in a season, so if a particular stallion has 2% of his runners in a particular period among the top 2% of earners his APEX A rating figure for that period is 1. If he has 10% of his runners among the top 2% his APEX A rating figure is 5. “AB” runners are the top 4%

of earners so if a stallion has 4% of his runners among the top 4% of earners his “APEX AB rating figure is 1. “ABC” runners are the top 8% so if a stallion has 8% of his runners among the top 8% of earners his “APEX ABC” rating is 1. If he had 16% of his runners among the top 8% his APEX ABC rating would be 2. And so on. The ratings can be done in any band individually or in any combination. To give you an idea as to what standard of horses are included in the ratings, in the 2005/06 season in Australia the top 2% of runners earned over $93,300, the next 2% of runners earned between $55,450 and $93,300 and the next 4% of runners earned between $30,640 and $55,450. In the 2005/06 Australian racing Season there were 31,193 runners, which means there were 619 “A” Runners (2%), 1237 “A+B” runners and 2475 “A+B+C” runners. In addition to the earnings, to qualify for a rating on the main list a stallion must have a predetermined minimum number of starters across a seven year band. The most commonly published lists are based on a minimum of what are called “150 year starters”. If a runner by a particular stallion earns prizemoney in each of the seven years under review he will count as 7 of the 150 “year starters”. Lists can be compiled for a smaller number of starters, also for first and second year sires etc. but will of necessity be less accurate than the main list. So, with APEX ratings, as with any type of sire lists, some skill in interpretation is still required. Perhaps the main thing to be aware of is that some young sires and some sires with limited numbers of runners will not necessarily appear on the lists at all. This does not mean they are not good sires, because when they do make the list, i.e. qualify with sufficient “year starters”, they might very well enter at, or near, the top.

Mystery Horse

October

by Andrew Reichard

Bluebloods is pleased to present the twenty-seventh in the series of our regular monthly feature, in which we invite readers to write or email if you think you can correctly identify our monthly “Mystery Horse”. The thoroughbred is one of the best documented breeds of animal in the world and our reference library contains photos and paintings of many of the most influential ancestors since the origin of the breed.

MYSTERY HORSE

Clue Great mare with her friend the sheep. One of her sons sired two Gr.1 winners in country also renowned for sheep production.

LAST MONTH: Answer - Arkle (Archive-Bright Cherry by Knight of the Garter) won 27 of his 35 starts over fences, including three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups 1964, 1965, 1966. Recognised as the greatest steeplechaser of all time, he was owned by the Duchess of Westminster, trained by Tom Dreaper and his regular rider was Pat Taaffe. Arkle never fell, he was so superior to even superstars like Mill House that there were two separate handicaps in his native Ireland for the Irish Grand National, one for times where Arkle was entered and another without. Arkle was often referred to by admiring fans as “himself” and legend has it that he often received mail addressed merely to “Himself, Ireland”. Fortunately there is some surviving footage of the great horse which can be viewed on youtube. Congratulations to our winner Elizabeth Wilson of Victoria. Terms and Conditions Answers can be phoned in, emailed or posted. All correct answers received by the 20th of the month will be placed in a random draw which will be conducted by a member of our staff.

HONOUR BOARD

Anyone who wins three times will go onto the Honour Board on this page and become ineligible to win again.

Sharyn Batson - Vic. Ian Baird - Vic.

The publisher’s decision on all matters relating to this quiz will be final, no correspondence will be entered into. The publisher reserves the right to exclude entries at any time. Prizes may be varied at any time at the publisher’s discretion. By submitting an entry contestants automatically agree to theses terms and conditions.

Trevor Johnson - NSW

Only your first answer is eligible, no further attempts please. Monthly Prize: Each month’s winner will receive a prize which will be a choice of one of the books or limited edition prints published by Bluebloods which is still in print, not sold out. Monthly winners will be contacted with a range of choices.
