STALLION PROFILE by David Bay

PROISIR THE English racing establishment got a mighty shock when Choisir won the King’s Stand-Golden Jubilee sprint double at Royal Ascot in 2003, becoming the first of several Australian trained performers to make their mark in Europe in the following decade or so. The Danehill grandson has also become one of the best reverse shuttlers and his talented son Proisir is spreading this excellence across the Tasman. He is about to cover his second book of mares at Rich Hill Stud in the fertile Waikato basin after getting 145 mares in 2015.

T

HE Jockey Club Stakes winner Tai-Yang (GB) (Solario) hardly set the world on fire during his stud career, but two of his daughters had quite an impact on Australasian pedigrees. Missy Suntan, is the dam of noted sire Rego (IRE), while the other is the champion NZ broodmare Sunbride (GB), fifth dam of Proisir, who is just one of her legion of stakes winning descendants.

all the family’s excellence on the track including a 5.75 length romp in the Spring Stakes-Gr.3 (1600m) at Newcastle at just his third start.

Unplaced on the track and a half-sister to the King’s Stand Stakes winner Easter Bride (Emir d’Iran), another noted producer, Sunbride left 11 winners from 13 named foals including a Melbourne Cup winner in Straight Draw, a Sydney Cup winner in General Command and a Caulfield Cup winner in Ilumquh. No wonder she was twice NZ Broodmare of the Year.

Raced by his breeders, Tony and Mario Falcone, the son of international champion sprinter Choisir (Danehill Dancer (IRE)-Great Selection by Lunchtime (GB)) tuned up for his race debut with two trials at Randwick in June and July of 2012, winning the second 1050m hit out before his first race start at Hawkesbury on August 1. The newly-minted three year-old lined up in a 1200m maiden and was mid-field at the 400m before unleashing a strong finishing burst for Nash Rawiller to end up 1.75 lengths clear of Lyric at the post, completing the journey in a smart 1:09.84 (34.73).

The Gr.3 winner and Gr.1 runner-up Proisir (Choisir-Prophet Jewel by Encosta de Lago), who is about to cover his second book of mares at Rich Hill Stud in NZ’s Waikato district, is from a branch of this family started by Sunbride’s placed daughter Bridesmaid (Agricola), a sister to General Command. In training with Gai Waterhouse, Proisir displayed

Race experience told the tale next time out and he made every post a winner in leading all the way over 1400m at Rosehill on September 1, beating Norzita by 2.25 lengths in 1:22.71 (34.91). Clearly he was a colt on the way up and trainer Gai Waterhouse questioned jockey Nash Rawiller after the win.

“He is a serious horse?” she said. “Yes, definitely,” was the jockey’s reply. The trainer then took Proisir to Newcastle on September 19 for a serious test against some smart three year-olds in the NJC Spring Stakes-Gr.3 (1600m). Proisir showed just how good he was that day, toying with his rivals as he led all the way to beat Trophies by 5.75 lengths and with Proverb third, a half-head back. The Choisir colt ran 1:35.78 (34.32) in a dominant win that had his normally effusive trainer momentarily lost for words. “He’s so exciting, I got goose bumps after that,” she said. “He could win the Spring Champion next start, this is always a great race and a great indicator of good horses.” “He made all his own luck and travelled comfortably, that last furlong was certainly impressive,” Nash Rawiller said. “He quickened very well and he’s a very promising horse. We have just let him be happy at home and haven’t tightened the screws yet, he’s really going places.”

Not many horses tackle Gr.1 company at just their fourth start, but Proisir showed he was up to the elite level when narrowly beaten by It’s a Dundeel in the Spring Champion Stakes-Gr.1 (2000m) on October 6 after being second last in the field of seven with 400m to go. Honorious was third. Proisir then took on the best weight-for-age horses in Australia in the W.S. Cox Plate-Gr.1 (2040m) and finished eighth to Ocean Park after leading at the 400m. This would be the only unplaced run of his career. Put away until the New Year, he again had two trials, finishing third behind More Joyous in the first and then winning a 1000m Randwick hit-out by two lengths from Secret Admirer in 58.70 on February 18, 2013. He struck a heavy nine track first-up when third behind Pierro and Rebel Dane, beaten 2.9 lengths, in the Hobartville Stakes-Gr.2 at Rosehill on March 2 after sitting second most of the journey. He then met his old nemesis It’s a Dundeel in the Randwick Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m) on March 16, finishing second, beaten a half-length in the feature which was run at Warwick Farm in 2013. Tatra was third in a race that also featured the likes of Gr.1 stars Rebel Dane, Secret Admirer and Ferlax in the field of 11. That run guaranteed Proisir was one of the early favourites for the rich Doncaster Mile-Gr.1. Unfortunately, Proisir suffered a tendon injury and was sent to the paddock. He was given a period of rehabilitation and headed to the Melbourne stable of Peter Moody to tackle the Gr.1 sprints before the injury flared up again in late 2013. He next appeared at Randwick under the care of new trainers Peter and Paul Snowden in late 2014. He was fourth of five in a trial on November 17 and when the tendon again caused trouble it was decided to retire the talented colt after just seven starts that saw him record three wins, two seconds and a third and gather earnings of $475,230. A call from bloodstock agent Michael Otto to Rich Hill’s John Thompson that the horse was available had the stud master on the first available flight to Sydney to inspect the five year-old. “Proisir was a legitimate Gr.1 performer and his looks and pedigree make him a quality package,” Thompson said after sealing the deal. “Choisir has been a great international success story for Australian racing and for Coolmore stud and his champion sprinting son Starspangledbanner has made a great start to his stud career. Proisir’s dam is a multiple winner by champion sire Encosta de Lago, so he has all the genetic ingredients to make a successful sire. I believe he will be a very valuable addition to New Zealand’s stallion ranks.” Australasian breeders obviously thought so too as the handsome bay, who stands 16.1 hands, covered 145 mares in his first season at the 130ha Rich Hill. He looks great value in 2016 at his fee of $7000 + GST. He stands alongside the five-time Gr.1 winner and NZ Horse of the Year Jimmy Choux (Thorn Park), the Melbourne Cup-Gr.1-Australian Cup-Gr.1 winner Shocking (AUS) (Street Cry (IRE)), who have both had great starts to their stud careers, and the dual Gr.1 winner and proven sire Pentire (GB)) (Be My Guest). Proisir’s sire Choisir (Danehill Dancer (IRE)-Great Selection by Lunchtime (GB)), a trailblazing Gr.1 sprinter in Australia and England who notched up his 75th stakes winner in early July, is certainly bred to be fast and precocious as his sire was a Gr.1 winner at two and is a son of breed-shaper Danehill (USA) and his dam, Great Selection, is by the successful sire and Dewhurst Stakes-Gr.1 winner Lunchtime and from Pensive Mood, a daughter of blazingly fast Biscay (Star Kingdom (IRE)).

Choisir (Danehill Dancer (IRE)-Great Selection by Lunchtime (GB))

Choisir won seven races, starting early with a Breeders’ Plate romp at two, a season when he won the Skyline-Gr.3 and was runner-up in the AJC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 and third in the Golden Slipper-Gr.1. At three he won the Lightning Stakes-Gr.1 (1000m) at Flemington and the Linlithgow-Gr.2 and was third in the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1 and Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 before travelling to England, where, although listed as a four year-old, he was still just three. Choisir created a sensation at Royal Ascot when he came out and won the King’s Stand Stakes-Gr.2 (5f) at the start of the Royal week and then the Golden

Jubilee Stakes-Gr.1 (6f) a few days later for trainer Paul Perry, the first of a growing list of Aussie sprinters to beat Europe’s best and now including his son Starspangledbanner. He was also runner-up in the July Cup-Gr.1 before returning to the Hunter Valley to begin stud duties at Coolmore in 2004 and then shuttling to Ireland in 2004. Bloodstock site Arion Pedigrees shows us that at July 12 he had 887 winners (63.6% of starters) of more than $87m and his 75SW (5.4% of starters) included eight Gr.1 winners. They include Champion 3Y0 and Older Miler in Europe Olympic Glory (Alzao), who shuttles to Arrowfield and Starspangledbanner

Proisir

(by Made of Gold, a great-grandson of Noholme), who won the Oakleigh Plate and Caulfield Guineas before capturing the July Cup-Golden Jubilee Stakes double in England where he was also runner-up in the Nunthorpe Stakes. Although Starspangledbanner’s early stud career was not helped by fertility issues, he’s proved himself a top class sire, already leaving the Prix Morny-Gr.1 winner The Wow Signal (High Chaparral). The $2m earner is now successfully covering in both hemispheres for Coolmore and will stand alongside his sire at Jerrys Plains in the spring. Choirir’s other Gr.1 winners include Obviously (Montjeu) in the US; Doncaster Mile and Myer Classic winner Sacred Choice (Sir Tristram); Zabeel Classic and Thorndon Mile winner Historian (Marauding); Manawatu Sires’ winner Choice Bro (Palace Music), Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Japonisme (Encosta de Lago), a $1.2m earner bred on the same cross of Proisir; and SA Derby hero Kushadasi (Carnegie). Although Choisir has worked with a variety of sire lines he has been very effective with mares featuring Sadler’s Wells (or his brother Fairy King), Sir Tristram and his sire Sir Ivor, Star Kingdom, especially Todman and his brother Noholme, but also Biscay (sire of his second dam) and Kaoru Star. He also has a Gr.3 winner out of a daughter of Danzero (giving Danehill 3mx3m; Star Kingdom 5mx5m). His daughters are starting to make an impact too with 117 winners of more than $9.2m including Royal Ascot Gr.1 winner My Dream Boat. He is by Lord Shanakill (whose third dam is by Nodouble by Noholme) and his second dam is by Fairy King’s son Turtle Island). Choisir’s sire Danehill Dancer (IRE) (Danehill (USA)Mira Adonde by Sharpen Up) won the National Stakes-

Gr.1 and Phoenix Stakes-Gr.1 at two and worked his way up from an initial modest fee to become one of the world’s leading sires with runners like Choisir and Private Steer (dam by Noholme grandson Semipalatinsk) in Australia and European Guineas winners like Speciosa (dam by Sky Classic, whose dam is by Nodouble, by Noholme) and Mastercraftsman (IRE) (Black Tie Affair), a successful shuttler to NZ.

Prophet Jewel’s second dam Factor also counted a juvenile success among her two wins at 1200m1850m and her winners include the stakes placed Mr Esteem (Umatilla). She is by another NZ sire success (58SW) in Centaine (Century-Rainbeam by Vain), a Group-winning sprinter-miler whose second dam is by Todman and whose fourth dam is Melbourne Cup winner Rainbird.

Proisir’s dam Prophet Jewel won six races, one at two, to 1300m including city events in Sydney and Brisbane and she is a daughter of Gr.1 winner and twice Australian Champion Sire Encosta de Lago (Fairy King (USA)-Shoal Creek by Star Way (GB)). Winner of the Invitation Stakes-Gr.1, Encosta de Lago is now pensioned at Coolmore and has left more than 110 stakes winners, his current star among 24 Gr.1 winners being sprint champion Chautauqua (dam by Danehill son Lion Hunter). Encosta de Lago’s dam is by the wonderful NZ sire Star Way (GB) (Star Appeal), like Sir Tristram, a descendant of superb foundation mare Selene. Second dam is the imported Rolls (USA), a daughter of breed-shaper Mr. Prospector and Grand Luxe, a daughter of Sir Ivor and the Gr.1 winner and producer Fanfreluche (Northern Dancer). Rolls is also dam of Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winner and sire Flying Spur (Danehill). Encosta de Lago is set to add to his already impressive credentials as he is about to become a runaway winner of his first Australian Champion Broodmare sire title.

Next dam Imperial Bride, by the Forli son and Royal Ascot Gr.3 winner Imperial March (CAN), is a half-sister to five winners including stakes winners Down The Aisle (Imperialist) and Gold Pulse (Oncidium) and from General Command’s sister Bridesmaid (Agricola). Her dam of course is Sunbride, the Tai-Yang daughter who was NZ Broodmare of the Year in 1961 and 1968 and left 11 winners as well as an unraced grandaughter who was also Broodmare of the Year, Dicidiana (Agricola), dam of the Gr.1winning Oncidium brothers Dayana and Grand Cidium, achieving the feat in 1973. Another Sunbride daughter, Our Love, produced the Gr.2 winner and Cox Plate-Gr.1 runner-up and sire Terrific (Gigantic). This is family 16.

Prophet Jewel is the dam of four winners including Proisir’s talented brother Divine Prophet, a juvenile of 2015-16 who is already a city winner and ran a slashing third in the ATC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1. He should add further lustre to this family in the new season.

Sunbride’s half-sister Easter Bride (Emir d’Iran) is also a name to reckon with in pedigrees, her descendants including the Gr.1 winners Trocane, Grand Echezeaux (dam of Darci Brama and Burgundy), four-time Gr.1 winner Ethereal (Melbourne Cup), Howard Be Thy Name, Stony Bay, Zamoff, Happyanunoit, Mr Prudent, Zamination, Blackfriars, Larrocha and Gleaming Waters. Crossing her descendants to Proisir could be a winning move. I

Prince of Penzance won a history-making Melbourne Cup three days after Tarzino claimed the Victoria Derby. Preferment won three Group One races in Australia during the season and Tavago was triumphant in the Australian Derby. A week later Lucia Valentina, Sofia Rosa and Azkadellia all won Group One races on day two of The Championships. Werther completed a notable year by defeating a very competitive field in the Hong Kong Derby and progressing to win the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at international Group One level. At season-end Werther was named Hong Kong’s Horse of the Year. On the domestic front the NZB Insurance Pearl Series, launched by the NZTBA in 2013, continues to reward many breeders and owners racing fillies and mares in New Zealand. The season’s entries are second only to the first year numbers as breeders re-invest in their fillies for the future. May the decisions you make for the 2016 breeding season result in rewarding your endeavours by producing quality thoroughbred horses to enhance the New Zealand breeding industry’s long-standing reputation of excellence. PERSONALITY PROFILE

MOVERS AND SHAKERS A Q&A WITH

STORY BY DONNA STODDART

RODNEY SCHICK

WINDSOR Park Stud, in the Waikato region of New Zealand, has produced a list of truly extraordinary racehorses. Might and Power, So You Think, Aerovelocity, Catalan Opening, Sky Chase, Monaco Consul and Descarado are but a few of the consistent number of Gr.1 winners who have been bred at the renowned Cambridge nursery. In addition, the roster of past and present stallions serves as a thoroughbred roll of honour. Nelson and Sue Schick, along with their son Rodney and his wife Gina, own Windsor Park. Rodney gave us this insight into the history of the stud and the horses and events that have shaped him. Q: Rodney could you tell us a little of the history of Windsor Park Stud? A: “Back in the early 1970s my parents Nelson and Sue took over Windsor Park from Ian and Jessie Duncan. Mum was actually working for the stud at the time and Dad was sheep and beef farming. Dad had always had a fascination for pedigrees and loved racing; his first job in this industry was at Windsor Park.” They bought the stallion Silver Dream, and then in 1980 moved to the Kaipaki Road property we are on now. We started off with one property of 108 acres and now the stud encompasses 1200 acres, spread across three properties.” In 1981, we purchased the outstanding Star Way, he was a fantastic stallion for the stud and he set a then world record of five Gr.1 winners from his first crop.” Q: I guess you would have some great memories over the years of various horses and events? A: “We had a lot of fantastic years with many great racehorses, and those good times have certainly outweighed the bad. Watching Might and Power winning the Melbourne Cup was probably one of the highlights for me; he was such a superb racehorse with a huge following.” Q: Tell us about some of your earliest working experiences. A: “I’m lucky enough to have some great memories of working with fantastic people over the years. I remember when I was 14, spending a summer with Bruce and Maureen Harvey at Ascot Farm. As I had previously only worked for my family, getting to spend a summer with the Harveys was a very interesting time. Even though they were a young couple just starting out, they had a very professional operation and were very successful. That summer job was something I have always remembered because of the quality of work both Bruce and Maureen produced. “When I was 17, I worked for Pat Connell who ran Mapperley Stud in partnership with my parents, Steve Till and the Davison family. It was my first

2 NEW ZEALAND SIRES PREVIEW 2016

time really handling stallions and I got to look after Volksraad in his first year at stud and he of course went on to become a champion sire. Straussbrook and Stylish Century were there at the time, so I was also handling them. It was a really good education for me because Pat gave me the opportunity, at what was quite a young age, of looking after stallions. “Pat and Clare were great to me and, even though it was only for one season, I had a fantastic time. Pat was a big influence on my life, he was an unbelievable worker, he seemed to work more hours in a day than actually exist!” Q: Where was your first overseas working experience? A: “I went to work for Sydney trainer John Morish. John was a real ‘man’s man’ and a great trainer. At the time he had March Hare and Rouslan in the stable, so it was going as good as ever. It was quite an exciting time for a young guy from Cambridge to go and work in Sydney over a carnival and it really gave me the ‘bug’ for Australian racing. Actually, that’s where I first met Mike Moran who was also working for John at the time. Mike, who went on to breed So You Think and Preferment, ended up coming to work at Windsor Park and has been part of our team for the past 15 years as our marketing manager.” Q: In the late 1990s, you went to England to work for Mark Tompkins? A: “Yes, I spent a year and a half with him at Newmarket and once again it was a huge experience for me. I had only been there two weeks and he gave me the best horse in the yard to look after, Even Top, who finished second in the 2000 Guineas. I got to travel all over the place with the horse and had a great time with Mark. He was a wonderful character; a Yorkshireman, once again a hard taskmaster but I learnt a huge amount and gained a lot of respect for the English racehorse.” Q: Then it was off to the United States where you gained some invaluable experience? A: “I was then lucky enough to work with Dr Ric Redden, who specialises in laminitis. This opportunity to work in Kentucky was organised by Lady Tavistock, who has been a great family friend. “I’d always trimmed mares and foals when I was younger, but Ric really gave me a passion for the horse’s feet. The knowledge that I obtained there is

something that not only has helped me manage laminitis in our own mares, but also with other people’s horses. He was a fantastic guy, very innovative and came up with a lot of new theories that have benefitted our stud over the years. It was another of those important experiences in my life. It really made a difference when I came back to our farm. I have been back over to Ric’s quite a few times, and we also send staff to work there and spend time with Ric and Nancy.” Q: Was there ever any thought that you might do something other than come back to work at Windsor Park? A: “No, not really. If I had ever done anything else though, the only other thing would have been a dry stock farmer (sheep and cattle). I’ve always been a farmer at heart and still am. We run a lot of sheep and cattle now and I really enjoy that ‘stock’ side of the business, but horses have always come first. I think that travelling probably really cemented what I wanted to do. “I remember landing in London and thought I might go and work in a pub for a while, but within two weeks I was in Newmarket with the horses. It’s hard to get it out from under your skin once it’s there!” Q: Obviously running the stud would take up a lot of your time, but do you have any interests or hobbies outside of Windsor Park? A: “Yes, I do. My wife Gina has a business called EventStars, which is involved in the rehoming of off the track thoroughbreds. I get a lot of pleasure out of seeing these horses go on to successful careers after racing. Gina gets many horses from New Zealand owners and trainers, but also rehomes many ex racehorses from the Hong Kong Jockey Club. “I’ve really become quite passionate about watching her business grow and seeing what she can achieve with these horses. A huge number are rehomed every year and I’m really proud of her because it’s great for the industry. Naturally, all owners love their horses and want to see them go on and do something after they retire and I enjoy seeing the horses, and not only my own, going on to have a good life after retiring from racing. “I also enjoy spending quality family time with our four children, mainly riding; with hunting and fishing probably being my two main ‘escapisms’ as far as hobbies go.”

“THE KEY IS TO BE PASSIONATE AND TO WORK HARD, WITHOUT THOSE TWO IT WON’T HAPPEN. IT’S A JOB YOU HAVE TO LOVE AND BE PREPARED FOR THE WORK THAT COMES WITH IT” RODNEY SCHICK Q: You have named a few people that have been a big influence in your life, and naturally your parents would also be another two. Have there been any others that have helped ‘define’ Rodney Schick? A: “Yes, Steve Till. Steve has been with Windsor Park for 35 years now and I’ve grown up with him being here. We work very closely together now and he’s actually a very good breeder in his own right too, having bred Aerovelocity who is one of the best sprinters in the world. Steve and Jane have been a big part of my life, I have been very lucky over the years with the people who have influenced me.” Q: I guess with the overseas travelling you have done, you would have been to many race meetings. What are some of your favourites? A: “My favourite race in the world is the Cox Plate. However, last year I was lucky enough to go to the Melbourne Cup for the first time. As it is right in the middle of our breeding season, I’ve just not been able to attend previously. Credit to Australia, it is a fantastic carnival, along with Sydney, who always put on a great show. Royal Ascot is also another one I enjoy. I try to go as often as I can and actually was lucky enough to take Falkirk for the Kings’ Stand. He was very unlucky and finished fourth, but it was such a neat thing to take a horse you had bred and raised to Royal Ascot.” Q: There have obviously been some great stallions standing at Windsor Park over the years. You currently have a lovely roster for 2016 . . . but if you could have any stallion past or present standing there, who would you choose?

A: “Sadlers Wells has always been one of my favourite stallions ever; he’s been a great influence on the breed, an amazing horse. Another one of my favourite stallions would be Zabeel, he’s another of the all-time greats. We bred Might and Power and Sir Patrick still thinks he is the best of his progeny. We had shares in both Sir Tristram and Zabeel and they have been a big part of the New Zealand breeding industry for a long time.” Q: Who are some of the most memorable stallions you have had standing at Windsor Park? A: “We have been lucky to have some great stallions here over the years, like High Chaparral, Thorn Park, who was very special to me personally, our great stallion Volksraad who won eight premierships, Tale of the Cat, Star Way and Silver Dream.“Kaapstad was another one who raced very well in Australia and then Montjeu, he was one of the best stallions in the world and we were lucky enough to have him come and stand here for four seasons. We have had a great relationship with Coolmore Stud over many years, shuttling some of their best stallions. ”

“Charm Spirit, the champion son of Invincible Spirit, is coming back again this year and Pour Moi, he’s coming back too. This stallion left the Gr.1 winner Sacred Elixir (2016 BTC J.J Atkins) and is actually one of the leading first season sires in Australia, which of course is very hard to do from New Zealand. He’s not really even bred to leave two year-olds, being a winner of the English Derby, so of course we are excited to have him back. “There are two four year-old stallions who are still racing that we own in partnerships and they will be our future. We own Vanbrugh, a son of Encosta de Lago, with Merriebelle Stables of America. He won the 2016 ATC Champion Stakes-Gr.1. Vanbrugh is being trained by Chris Waller and will race on this year and we are looking at the Epsom for him. “Then we have another exciting young horse Rageese, by Street Cry, in Melbourne with Darren Weir. He is a Gr.1 placed two year-old and stakeswinning three year-old we race with Sheikh Khalifa and he will be aiming towards the Rupert Clarke (MRC Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes) in the spring.”

Q: What of the current and future stallion roster at Windsor Park?

Q: In closing, if someone wishing to have a career

A: “In 2016 we’ve got Shamexpress, a leading sprinter in Australia and we have also purchased Rip Van Winkle, who is the second best son of Galileo ever. We bought a half share in Mongolian Khan with Mr Wolf’s Rider Group. He was an absolutely superb galloper, winning two Derbys and a Caulfield Cup, so he’s an exciting new horse for us here.

NEW ZEALAND SIRES PREVIEW 2016 3

FIRST SEASON SIRES

NEW BOYS

OFFER PLENTY OF FOOD FOR THOUGHT

STORY BY PAUL VETTISE, DAVID BAY & RENEE GEELEN

CLASSIC winners, Gr.1 weight-for-age stars, a champion juvenile and a speed machine, all provide tempting choices for breeders contemplating using a first season sire in NZ in the spring. There are imported as well as locally bred and performed horses who are being given their chance at stud and all are worthy of consideration on the score of race performance and pedigree. Chequers Stud Farm

CHEQUERS STUD BONUS OFFER / SURE TO TEMPT BREEDERS BREEDERS will have an added incentive to support the Australian speed machine Il Cavallo who will serve his first season at Chequers Stud in 2016. Brothers Mark Fraser-Campin and Chris Campin purchased the handsome son of the international Gr.1 winner and leading dual hemisphere sire Choisir last spring to stand at their Cambridge operation alongside Battle Paint (USA). Il Cavallo's introductory fee has been set at $3000 + GST, but with an extra bonus. “We will cover the cost of entry into the New Zealand Bloodstock Pearl Series Bonus Scheme for any breeder who gets a filly,” Mark FraserCampin said. The scheme currently offers bonuses of almost $2.6m and prize money of nearly $2.8m across 215 individual races for fillies and mares over three seasons of racing. Il Cavallo won four times at 1000m and once in record time at Sandown over 900m under the care of the leading Caulfield trainer Peter Moody. He also stakes placed multiple times and was fourth in the Vain Stakes-Gr.3. He had five wins, two seconds and was twice third in 18 starts. “He’s an outstanding type of horse with a great pedigree and a terrific temperament so he ticked all the boxes for us,” Mark Fraser-Campin said. “We're certain he's going to be leaving great individuals with the pace and ability to make strong and early impressions.” Il Cavallo is out of stakes placed Gold Chant, a daughter of the beautifully bred El Moxie (Conquistador Cielo-Raise the Standard by Hoist the Flag), a sire who hails from the same family as Northern Dancer, Machiavellian and Danehill. Il Cavallo is a half-bother to the MRC 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 winner Amicus (Fastnet Rock) and a three-quarter-brother to the champion European and Australian sprinter (four Gr.1) and Gr.1 sire Starspangledbanner, a son of Choisir (Danehill Dancer (IRE)-Great Selection by Lunchtime (GB)) and Gold Chant’s stakes placed dam Gold Anthem, by Made of Gold. 4 NEW ZEALAND SIRES PREVIEW 2016

Il Cavallo (AUS) (Choisir-Gold Chant by El Moxie (USA))

Il Cavallo’s third dam National Song (by champion sprinter Vain) is a halfsister to Gr.1 winner and outstanding broodmares Circles of Gold (Marscay), dam of Australian and international Gr.1 winners and sires Elvstroem (Danehill) and Haradasun (Fusaichi Pegasus). The family has found further international kudos through Elvstroem’s Group-placed sister Hveger, now at stud in the northern hemisphere and dam of the Aidan O'Brien-trained dual Gr.1 Hong Kong Vase and Secretariat Stakes winner Highland Reel (Galileo). Il Cavallo's associate sire Battle Paint (USA) will stand at $5000 + GST. The Tale of the Cat stallion has produced 29 individual winners from 50 runners at an impressive strike rate of 58%. Battle Paint's flagship performer is the Singapore Guineas-SGP-Gr.1 winner and champion two and three year-old Affleck while his leading New Zealand representative is the dual Gr.1 runner-up Battle Time.

VESPA / CERTAINLY COULD SCOOT ALONG

THE BOLD ONE / A FAMILY OF STAR PERFORMERS

THE Gr.1-winning sprinter Vespa (Elusive City (USA)-Miss Avalon (IRE) by Fantastic Light (USA)) is seen as a great fit to Wellfield Lodge’s stallion roster. The Champion Two Year-Old will begin his stud career at the Palmerston North farm in 2016 following his retirement earlier this year.

DANEHILL grandson The Bold One (NZ) (Fastnet Rock (AUS)-The Jewel by O’Reilly) will begin his stallion career in 2016 at Grangewilliam Stud at Waitotara, south of Wanganui. His sire has left close to 800 winners, he is from one of New Zealand’s strongest female families and his dam is a dual Gr.1 winner.

“We’re always looking for opportunities and when this one came along we had to take it. Vespa is an exciting horse who will ideally complement our other two stallions Alamosa and Road To Rock,” Wellfield’s Bill Gleeson said. “Vespa was a Gr.1 and Gr.2-winning sprinter and he also placed at the highest level over a mile. He was a precocious type of horse and when we put our mares over him there is every likelihood he will leave early types who can then develop into top class three year-olds and older horses.” The principals in the stallion are Kevin Hickman, who bred and subsequently sold Vespa, Wellfield Lodge and Chris Rutten and John Norwood who raced the horse. “We have all made a commitment to send good numbers of quality mares to the stallion in his first three years,” Gleeson said. The winner of seven of his 18 starts and with four seconds and a third for earnings of more than $915,000, Vespa was crowned Champion Two Year-Old of 2014 after his victories in the Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 and the Listed Karaka Million. The following season he won the Listed Northland Breeders’ Stakes, the Wellington Guineas-Gr.2 and against the older horses he claimed the Listed Flying Handicap and ran a close second in the Easter Handicap-Gr.1. He resumed as a four-year-old with a fifth placing in the Makfi Challenge Stakes-Gr.1, before he was struck by illness and a large abscess was removed from his lung. Vespa returned for four further starts, including a second in the NRM Sprint-Gr.1, before his retirement. He is a son of the Prix Morny-Gr.1 winner Elusive City (Elusive Quality (USA)Star of Paris by Dayjur), who has also sired the southern hemisphere Gr.1 winners Xanadu, Famous Seamus and Perfect Fit, as well as the French 1000 Guineas winner Elusive Wave. His sire Elusive Quality (Gone West), left the Golden Slipper winner Sepoy (ex Watchful by Danehill), a four-time Gr.1 winner and champion at two and three in Australia, among more than 120 stakes winners world-wide. Vespa is out of Miss Avalon, a daughter of Fantastic Light (USA) (Rahy), a sixtime Gr.1 winner and 2001 Horse of the Year (International Classification). She is a half-sister to Turkish racing star Toruk Macto (Authorized) and her dam, Mythical Girl (Gone West), won the Princess Margaret Stakes-Gr.3 at Royal Ascot and is a daughter of stakes winner and producer Yousefia, by champion sire Danzig and from influential producer Foreign Courier (Sir Ivor). It is an international family that features the hugely influential stallion Green Desert, a Gr.1-winning son of Danzig whose top-flight winners include the leading stallions Cape Cross, Invincible Spirit and Oasis Dream. Yousefia is a sister to Green Desert. Vespa, who is inbred 3mx3f to Gone West (Mr. Prospector) and 4mx4f to Danzig, will stand at $5000 + GST.

Vespa (NZ) (Elusive City (USA)-Miss Avalon (IRE) by Fantastic Light (USA))

“He’s got a fantastic pedigree and in his first four dams there are three NZ Broodmares of the Year, The Pixie (joint winner with Taiona) in 1981, The Fantasy in 1994 and The Grin in 2003,” stallion master Mark Corcoran said. “Also, his family is full of outstanding broodmares sires like O’Reilly, Grosvenor, Noble Bijou, Mellay and Kurdistan.” A home-bred for the Dennis brothers, The Bold One is a son of the dual Australian Champion Sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill (USA)-Piccadilly Circus by Royal Academy (USA), a dual Gr.1 winner and Champion 3YO Colt and Champion Sprinter. A very successful reverse shuttler, he is the sire of 95 stakes winners and is starting to emerge as a real sire of sires in the competitive Australian stallion market with sons like Hinchinbrook, Stryker, Rothesay, Foxwedge and Smart Missile. The Bold One is out of Champion NZ 3YO The Jewel (by O’Reilly), winner of the New Zealand 1000 Guineas, as well as the Waikato International StakesGr.1. The Jewel (ex The Grin by Grosvenor) won 11 races and is the dam of three stakes horses, including The Bold One. His older half-sister, The Diamond One (Tale of the Cat), is a tough campaigner who has won eight races, including the White Robe Lodge Handicap-Gr.3 for three years in succession and the Cuddle Stakes-Gr.3. She almost emulated her dam when she ran fourth in the 1000 Guineas at three. The other stakes horse from The Jewel is The Glitzy One (Flying Spur) who won eight races and was stakes placed on five occasions. The Bold One’s second dam is Listed winner The Grin (ex The Dimple by Noble Bijou), a three-quarter sister to Irish Chance, and dam of three stakes winners; The Jewel, Gr.2 winner Star Affair, and Gr.3 winner The One. Star Affair (Star Way) has already left two stakes winners, and both are Gr.1 placed as well. The Gr.3 winner Solid Billing was third in the Sydney Cup; while Listed winner Thy (by O’Reilly), a three-quarter sister to the dam of The Bold One), ran third in the Australian Oaks (won by Streama). The Bold One (family 2b) was trained by New Plymouth Allan Sharrock, and won four of his 14 starts (1000m-1200m), as well as placing third in the Listed Levin Stakes and fourth in the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes-Gr.3. He had nine first-three finishes, a sure pointer to his class and consistency. “I was approached by the syndicate, Eddie Bourke and the Dennis brothers, about standing him and then I had a talk to Allan and he convinced me, he rated him very highly and thought he was a Gr.1 horse in the making,” Corcoran said. The Bold One will stand at $2000 + GST alongside Zed, Haradasun and Dial A Prayer.

MAPPERLEY STUD DARLEY BACKING / ELITE LEVEL WINNERS IN NZ BEING in the right place at the right time has enabled Simms Davison’s Mapperley Stud to double its involvement with a global thoroughbred giant. This year the Matamata farm launches the stallion careers of the Gr.1 winners Contributer (IRE) (High Chaparral (IRE)-Serisia by Exit to Nowhere) and Complacent (AUS) (Authorized (IRE)-Insouciance by Quest for Fame (GB)). “It came down to having a good relationship with Darley and when I heard Complacent had been retired I got on a plane to go over and see him and the day I was there Contributer injured himself,” Davison said. “I was just Johnny on the spot so it’s been a very busy getting everything together. “Contributer will stand in a partnership between Mapperley and Darley and a group of New Zealand breeders, while a partnership between Mapperley and Darley will stand Complacent. Darley will definitely be supporting both horses.” A dual Listed winner in England, High Chaparral’s son Contributer was a firstup winner of the Coongy Handicap-Gr.3 in Australia for trainer John O’Shea. Last autumn he added the Apollo Stakes-Gr.2, the Chipping Norton StakesGr.1 and the Ranvet Stakes-Gr.1, to be crowned the Champion Middle Distance Galloper of 2014-15. “He’s a perfect fit for us after the huge success we’ve had with the progeny of High Chaparral, with both So You Think and Dundeel being raised and grazed at Mapperley,” Davison said. “He’s a lovely looking horse, a great mover and with a real presence about him.” Contributer is a son of the Exit to Nowhere mare dam Serisia, a Gr.3 winner in France and the dam of five winners from six to race. Second dam Seralia (Royal Academy (USA)-Serafica by No Pass No Sale) won the Listed Prix Yacowlef at Deauville on debut at two and her seven winners also include stakes winner and stakes producer Mayyadah (Invincible Spirit). Contributer won eight of 18 starts and was twice second and twice third for earnings topping $1m.

Complacent won the Gloaming Stakes-Gr.3 as a three year-old, then claimed top honours in the Spring Champion Stakes-Gr.1 and finished runner-up in the VRC Derby-Gr.1 for trainer Peter Snowden. His career was halted for 21 months by a tendon injury before he returned last year from John O’Shea’s stable to add the Chelmsford Stakes-Gr.2 and the Craven Plate-Gr.3 to his record. This took his tally to five wins, three seconds and a third from 11 starts and his earnings past $900,000. “He’s got a wonderful temperament, a real dude, and he’s a beautiful looking horse,” Davison said. By English Derby hero Authorized (Montjeu (IRE)), Complacent is one of seven winners out of the Quest for Fame mare Insouciance, a sister to triple Gr.1 winner (Champion 2YO) and sire Dracula. Complacent is a half-brother to the stakes performers Offhanded (Lonhro), who raced in Hong Kong as Tailwind, and Careless (Exceed and Excel). Second dam, Awards Ceremony (Kaoru StarParty by Lunchtime (GB)), was one of the “Blue Hens” at Woodlands (now Darley), her other stakes winners being Sash (Dr Grace) and The Oscars (Procol Harum) and she is a half-sister to stakes winners Festal and Masked Party. Both representatives of the all-conquering Sadler’s Wells male line, Contributer ($15,000 + GST) and Complacent ($5000 + GST) will stand alongside Gr.1 winner Atlante (Fastnet Rock) and Gr.1 runner-up He’s Remarkable (Pentire) at Mapperley. Sweynesse (AUS) (Lonhro-Swansea (IRE) by Singspiel (IRE))

NOVARA PARK STUD LONHRO SON / CAMPAIGNED WITH THE BEST A CAMBRIDGE farm’s search for a stallion to meet its strict criteria has come to a successful conclusion with the signing of a son of the champion galloper and sire Lonhro. Novara Park Stud manager Ray Knight said the stud had been on the lookout for an Australian Gr.1-performed horse and Sweynesse (AUS) had satisfied all expectations on pedigree, performance and type. “Sweynesse is the highest-rated stallion from the Zabeel sire line to begin stud duties in New Zealand since Savabeel. On the racetrack, Sweynesse was one of the leading three year-old colts of his year earning him an interim Timeform Rating of 122.” A winner of his only start at two, the John O’Shea-trained Sweynesse was unbeaten in his first four starts including dual Gr.3 wins in the Spring Stakes and the Gloaming Stakes. He then stepped up to Gr.1 company for the first time when third in the Spring Champion Stakes and he ended his preparation when eighth in the Gr.1 Cox Plate and a placing that didn’t accurately reflect his performance. From a wide gate he settled last and rattled off the fastest final sectional to finish only 1.75 lengths from the winner Adelaide. Sweynesse won four races, was twice second and once third for earnings of $612,000. He was also fourth in the Rosehill Guineas-Gr.1.

“ON THE RACETRACK, SWEYNESSE WAS ONE OF THE LEADING THREE YEAR-OLD COLTS OF HIS YEAR EARNING HIM AN INTERIM TIMEFORM RATING OF 122.” “Sweynesse was a legitimate Gr.1 performer and he has the looks and pedigree to complete a quality package,” Knight said. “He is a magnificent individual and stands 16.2h. He is dark brown, very correct and will let down into an impressive stallion. He will be a very valuable addition to the New Zealand ranks." To stand alongside the Gr.1 winner and Melbourne Cup placegetter Jakkalberry (IRE), Sweynesse is being syndicated among New Zealand breeders and will be offered at a fee of $6000 + GST. He was greatly admired at an open day at the stud on April 24.

WINDSOR PARK STUD DUAL DERBY / HERO READY FOR NEW CAREER WINDSOR Park Stud has joined forces with the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Group to stand Mongolian Khan (AUS) (Holy Roman Emperor (IRE)-Centafit (NZ) by Centaine (AUS)). The first horse to complete a Gr.1 sweep of the New Zealand and Australian Derbys and the Caulfield Cup, he will begin stage two of his career at the Cambridge nursery. “Windsor Park are delighted to have purchased 50% of the champion racehorse Mongolian Khan from the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Group who will retain the other half,” stud principal Rodney Schick said. “Their president Mr Lin Lang is a passionate supporter of the New Zealand racing industry and will be backing Mongolian Khan at stud with a number of high quality broodmares, which he is currently in the process of securing. “We have enjoyed great success standing Derby winners like High Chaparral and Montjeu at Windsor Park and with his race performance and pedigree we think Mongolian Khan ticks all the right boxes." The winner of eight of his 17 races and more than $4m, Mongolian Khan was a Champion Three Year-Old with his exploits earning him the New Zealand Horse of the Year title. Following his Caulfield Cup victory in 2015 he was accorded a Timeform Rating of 126, with only Winx achieving a higher rating in the 2016 4YO category. “With his speed and ability to run fast sectionals, Mongolian Khan ranks with the best racehorses I have trained, as his outstanding record would suggest,” said Murray Baker, who trained the entire with Andrew Forsman. “He's got the looks and was a very sound racehorse, who was blessed with a great action and a beautiful temperament.” Mongolian Khan is a son of Danehill's highest ever rated juvenile Holy Roman Emperor (ex l’On Vite by Secretariat), an internationally successful Gr.1 sire of the Hong Kong Horse of the Year Designs on Rome. Holy Roman Emperor’s second dam, the champion Northern Dancer daughter Fanfreluche, has had quite an impact on Australasian racing through her descendants like Golden Slipper winner and leading sire Flying Spur (Danehill) and Gr.1 winner and champion sire Encosta de Lago (Fairy King). A half-brother to the Wellington Cup-Gr.1 winner Young Centaur (Jeune), Mongolian Khan is out of Centafit, by the Australian bred sprinter and successful NZ sire Centaine, a son of Century and Rainbeam by Vain. He will stand at $10,000 + GST. Centafit is a sister to the HK-Gr.1 winner Super Fit and her dam Galopede, by the Petingo son Three Legs from Regal Step by Imperial March, is a halfsister to Regal Scent, dam of dual Avondale Gold Cup-Gr.1 winner Regal Krona (Krona) and Listed winner and Sydney Cup-Gr.1 placegetter Lang (Lord Ballina).

STUD PROFILE | BRIGHTHILL FARM

BRIGHTHILL FARM EARLY SIGNS LOOK GOOD FOR DALGHAR

STORY BY KRISTEN MANNING

D

alghar’s first crop runners have only just turned three and the early signs are good. On the back of the promise shown by his initial two year-olds, mare owners are returning to the horse, a sure sign of confidence. Brighthill Farm's Dalghar (FR) (Anabaa (USA)Daltawa by Miswaki), an imposing grey, has kickstarted his career in fine fashion with two exciting winners and five promising placegetters from his first 11 southern hemisphere bred runners. His first winner is the talented Donna Logan/Chris Gibbs trained Astara who, after easily breaking her maiden at Ellerslie in early April created a fine impression overcoming an awkward start to record a 1.75 length victory in the Listed Champagne Stakes (1600m) at the same track, and in the process smashed the NZ record for two year olds for 1600m by 2 seconds in a time of 1:34.22. Logan described the win as “mind-blowing”, while Gibbs noted Astara is only going to be better as she matures. “She is a really nice filly who is going to make an absolutely lovely three year-old, we can’t wait for that.” Astara's stablemate Barabas, who was a bold second at his New Zealand debut in early July, followed that up with a victory at Ruakaka on July 23. Bred by Brighthill, Barabas is from the Citidancer mare Jazzmatazz, making him a halfbrother to dual Group Three and Listed winner Jazzella, and to Sound of Silence and St Didar, both 5 time winners in Hong Kong. Also optimistic about Astara’s classic-year prospects is Brighthill Farm’s Nick King. He noted while Dalghar was a Gr.2 placed winner at two, he was most certainly at his best at three and four. “He is not going to be the sort of stallion who just sires quick two year-olds who don’t go on with it,” he said. “They are running well at two despite looking like they will be better at three and that is what is exciting. They should really suit spring racing in New Zealand and Australia.” Dalghar's early success is no surprise to King who has always had great faith in the horse, describing him as “"a terrific type with an outstanding pedigree”. A Gr.3 winner over 1400m at Longchamp and a Listed winner over 1500m at Deauville, Dalghar broke the track record which still stands at Longchamp for 1400m in the Prix du Palais-Royal G3 in a time of 1:17.40, and is one of 88 stakes winners sired worldwide by the July Cup-Gr.1, winner

Dalghar (FR) (Anabaa (USA)-Daltawa by Miswaki)

Anabaa (Danzig). An outstanding sprinter who made his mark at stud in both hemispheres, Anabaa sired the multiple Gr.1 winners Goldikova, Yell, Virage de Fortune and Anabandana. Bred by the Aga Khan, Dalghar is a son of the wonderful Miswaki mare Daltawa, a Listed winner who has really made her mark at stud producing six winners, four being stakes winners. Two of her sons, Daylami and Dalakhani (IRE), are of the absolute highest class. The winner of 11 of his 21 starts, Daylami (Doyoun) earned a number of accolades including European Horse of the Year, US Champion Male Turf Horse and European Champion Older Horse. Seven times successful at Gr.1 level, he proved his dominance in the French 2000 Guineas (1600m), the Eclipse Stakes (2000m), the Man O'War Stakes (2200m), the Coronation Cup (2400m), the King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2400m), the Irish Champion Stakes (2000m) and the Breeders’ Cup Turf (2400m). Represented by 14 stakes winners, Daylami has sired the tough and classy Gr.1 gallopers Voila Ici and Grey Swallow. Beaten only once in a nine start career, Dalakhani (Darshaan) won four Gr.1 races, the Criterium International (1600m), the French Derby (2400m), the Prix Lupin (2100m) and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (2400m). The sire of 47 stakes winners, Dalakhani has been well represented by the likes of big race winners Conduit, Integral, Chinese

White, Seismos, Second Step, Duncan, Moonstone and Reliable Man, whose first crop of yearlings sold so well in Australasia this year. As well as producing the Gr.1 placed Listed winner Daymarti, Daltawa is also grandam of the Gr.1 winner Dolniya and third dam of Gr.1 winner Dalkala. There is so much depth to this family, one that owes much to the breeding plans of the Aga Khan and before him Marcel Boussac. It is a family that has influenced far and wide, its ancestress l’Esperance also boasting amongst her descendants the prolific stallion Dubawi and even last year's Melbourne Cup hero Prince of Penzance. King, already pleased with how Dalgar's progeny have sold, is looking forward to next year’s sales, noting increased optimism in New Zealand in recent months. “There is a lot of confidence in the market place at the moment, so these are exciting times.” And in the future may be all the more exciting with the emerging Chinese market one of great interest to New Zealand breeders. Nick’s wife Anne-Marie and son Benji travelled there recently to have a look around with other stud representatives. “China is a massive potential market,” King said. “It is really interesting watching an industry start from scratch.”

STUD PROFILE| GRANGEWILLIAM

ZED’S SUCCESS BRINGS CAREER RENAISSANCE

STORY BY PAUL VETTISE

Z

ED’S colourful and successful career will continue this breeding season at Grangewilliam Stud where he has enjoyed his renaissance period. The son of the legendary Zabeel, who is from the Danehill mare Emerald Dream and traces to Eight Carat (GB), has proved a popular choice for breeders in the central districts after his rescue from near obscurity.

He initially began at Little Avondale Stud in the Wairarapa, but as the stud’s roster increased Zed was squeezed out and he ended up at Erewhon Station in Mid-Canterbury serving Clydesdales on the understanding that the entire’s owners could relocate him to a commercial operation at any time. The success of his sons Survived (at the time the winner of the Manawatu Classic-Gr.3 and the Hawke’s Bay Gold Cup-Gr3 and subsequently the Makfi Challenge Stakes-Gr.1), Usainity (Frank Packer Plate-Gr.3) and Ambitious Champion (a good NZ winner who later won the Queen Mother Memorial Cup-Gr.3 in Hong Kong) resulted in a move to Grangewilliam. “This will be his fourth season with us and in the first there was a huge response and he served 160 mares,” farm principal Mark Corcoran said. “Since then he’s been around the 60 mark, which has

been pretty good. He leaves good, durable horses who prove their versatility. They are genuine types and can run on top of the ground and on the heavier tracks.” Zed has been to the fore again this season with his son Jimmy Mac wining the Listed Marton Cup and the New Zealand Cup-Gr.3. His career subsequently came to a premature end with a tendon injury. The stallion’s percentage of winners to starters runs at better than 52%. “His ratio of stakes winners to winners is one in nine and that is as good as most and he’s done it without the best quality mares,” Corcoran said. “He is very good value at $NZ4000 and what is pleasing is that he has got yearlings with a number of top trainers like Darren Weir in Australia and here with the likes of Roger James, Kevin Myers and John Wheeler.” Standing alongside Zed in 2016 will be the international Gr.1 winner Haradasun (AUS) (Fusaichi Pegasus (USA)-Circles of Gold by Marscay), the beautifully-bred newcomer The Bold One, a winning son of Fastnet Rock and the dual Gr.1 winner The Jewel (O’Reilly), and the Pins horse Dial a Prayer, who is out of the dual Gr.3 winner and Gr.1 performer O’Ceirins Angel (Al Akbar).

Zed (NZ) (Zabeel-Emerald Dream (AUS) by Danehill (USA))

Haradasun, who stands at $NZ3000, joined the Grangewilliam roster in 2014 after relocating from Australia where he sired South African Gr.1 winner Harry’s Son and Australian Group winners Kabayan, Respondent and Taiyoo. “He’s leaving lovely types of horses,” Corcoran said. “This will be Dial a Prayer’s third season here and there’s been a good response to him,” Corcoran said. “He has served close to 70 mares so far.” Dial a Prayer will stand at $NZ500 while The Bold One’s introductory fee is $A2000.

STUD PROFILE | MAPPERLEY STUD

MAPPERLEY STUD ROLLING HILLS THE HOME OF CHAMPIONS

STORY BY RENÉE GEELEN

The rolling green hills of Mapperley Stud paint that perfect picture of New Zealand we all imagine when the country is mentioned. It should be no surprise then sthat these pastures have produced some top class gallopers. One of the most famous horses to carry the stud’s ‘M under bar over bar’ brand is So You Think (NZ) (High Chaparral (IRE)-Triassic by Tights) who won a staggering 10 Gr.1 races across both hemispheres. His first crop of 2015-16 two yearolds included Gr.2 winner Gold Rush. Another graduate from the property is six-time Gr.1 winner Dundeel (NZ) (High Chaparral-Stareel by Zabeel) who stands at Arrowfield Stud. The VRC Derby-Gr.1 winner Sangster (NZ) (SavabeelQuinta Special by Spectrum (IRE)) went on as an older horse to win two further Gr.1 races in New Zealand, while AJC Derby-Gr.1 winner Nom Du Jeu (NZ) (Montjeu (IRE)-Prized Gem by Prized) has recently moved to Jindera Park in NSW. Third generation owner Simms Davison said, “The 2016 breeding season marks a significant milestone for the team here at Mapperley with the recent acquisition of champion Australian Gr.1 winners Contibuter (IRE) and Complacent (AUS), as well as the greatly anticipated arrival of Atlante's first crop of foals. He's Remarkable's first runners are also set to make their debut on to race tracks around Australasia this season and with plenty of hype around their ability we can't wait to see what they can do. “The Mapperley Stud nursery has been home to many great racehorses and has time and time again proven to be the perfect sanctuary for giving young horses an athletic head start.” With the success that Mapperley Stud has had with progeny of the now deceased High Chaparral, it is no surprise that the stud has elected to stand one of his Gr.1-winning sons this season. Contributer (IRE) (High Chaparral IRE)-Serisia by Exit to Nowhere), fee $NZ15,000 THE Champion Miler in Australia in 2014-15 thanks to his dual Gr.1 victories in the Chipping Norton and Ranvet Stakes, Contributer started his career as a two year-old in Europe where he 16 NEW ZEALAND SIRES PREVIEW 2016

won a maiden race over 1750m. He won again at three, and was Gr.3 placed behind Magician. At four, he won two Listed races in England before being sent to Australia where he won the David Jones Cup-Gr.3. It was at five that he thrived, and he won three of his seven starts at that age in Australia. All up, Contributer won eight races and more than $1.1. He is out of the Gr.3 winner Serisia, a daughter of Exit to Nowhere and the Listed juvenile winner Seralia by Royal Academy (USA). Contributer, one of five winners from his dam, starts his stud career in the spring. Atlante (AUS) (Fastnet Rock-Readyforcatherine by More Than Ready (USA)), fee $NZ7000 A CLASSIC winner by dual Champion Australian Sire Fastnet Rock, Atlante has plenty in his favour. As a three year-old, Atlante won three of his nine starts, including the NZ 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 over a mile. He backed this up as a four year-old when he beat Gr.1 sprinter Trust in a Gust in the Listed Chandler Macleod Stakes at Moonee Valley. His sire, Fastnet Rock (Danehill (USA)-Piccadilly Circus by Royal Academy), has left 95 stakes winners and is emerging as a sire of sires. His dam, Readyforcatherine, was a good race mare who won six races, two as a two year-old, and was stakes placed on three occasions. Atlante descends from a solid USA family and his second dam Rosa Carolina is by outstanding sire Kingmambo from Garden Flower by Dayjur. Fourth dam Water Lily (Riverman), a half-sister to the dam of Melbourne Cup-Gr1 winner and sire Jeune (GB), was a Gr.3 winner in France and her eight winners include Gr.1 winner and sire Talinum (Alydar). Atlante’s first foals are due in the spring. Complacent (AUS) (Authorized (IRE)-Insouciance by Quest for Fame (GB)), fee $NZ5000 COMPLACENT won three of his four starts as a three year-old, highlighted by the Spring Champion Stakes-Gr.1, where he beat Horse of

the Year Criterion. In his final start at that age, he ran a brave second to Polanski in the VRC DerbyGr.1. He was set for a northern hemisphere campaign but injured a tendon and missed his entire four year-old season. It is a rare horse who recovers from an injury like that, yet Complacent was back as a five year-old. All five of his starts that spring were in Group company and he won twice, including the Chelmsford Stakes-Gr.2 over a mile. A good option for breeders wanting a fast stayer, Complacent, whose dam is a sister to triple Gr.1 winner and sire Dracula and from the family of Wandjina, Masked Party and Festal, retires to stud in 2016. He’s Remarkable (NZ) (Pentire (GB)-Axiom, by Zabeel), fee $NZ4000 ASCOT King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes-Gr.1 winner Pentire (Be My Guest-Gull Nook by Mill Reef) continues to churn out tough Gr.1 winners each season, with the likes of dual Horse of the Year and 10-time Gr.1 winner Mufhasa, dual Horse of the Year and four-time Gr.1 winner Xcellent, and Melbourne Cup winner Prince of Penzance among his 14 Gr.1 winners and 46 stakes winners. He’s Remarkable is typical of the breed, a tough horse who raced in the best company for several seasons. As a three year-old, He’s Remarkable was second in the NZ 2000 Guineas-Gr.1, while at four, he won four of his eight races in both New Zealand and Australia, where he was successful the Newmarket Handicap-Gr.3 at Newcastle, and was second in the WA Railway Stakes-Gr.1. At five he was again Gr.1 placed. Out of Axiom, a Zabeel daughter of tough Gr.2 and Gr.3 winner Arletty (Centaine), He’s Remarkable is a brother to boom dual Gr.1 winner Xtravagant (NZ 2000 Guineas, Waikato Sprint). His first crop will be two year-olds in 2016-17.

STUD PROFILE | NOVARA PARK

NOVARA PARK, LONHRO SON ATTRACTING PLENTY OF INTEREST

N

OVARA Park brings together past and present into an exciting new venture for established businessman Luigi Muollo. He has a long history in racing, and in December 2014, he purchased the property to expand his interests in the breeding industry in New Zealand. Previously known as Shelby Park the farm is a successful property, producing many good horses for its previous owners. It is managed by Ray Knight and is home to talented performers Sweynesse (AUS) (Lonhro-Swansea (IRE) by Singspiel (IRE)) and Jakkalberry (IRE) (Storming Home-Claba di San Jore by Barathea (IRE)). “The Muollo family is extraordinarily lucky with their horses, starting way back with Kingdom Bay and recently Luigi’s brother owned a share in Press Statement,” Ray Knight said. “This farm might seem new to people, but the owners are very experienced with a good depth of knowledge about our industry. This, and their solid business experience in other industries, stands them in good stead for the future of this venture.” One of the unusual aspects of Novara Park is that it operates as a stallion station, and only the owner’s 30 broodmares reside there. Muollo intends to grow his broodmare band as per the normal course of events in line with his stallion interests. Because all other broodmares will walk-in to the stallions from nearby properties, this strategy will provide plenty of economic flow through for Novara’s neighbours. “The New Zealand industry has had a great season internationally, including winning the Melbourne Cup with Prince of Penzance, and I’ve seen this spark the enthusiasm for many participants in the industry here,” Knight said. “In particular, Sweynesse has been incredibly popular with breeders, and much of this lies with his sire. He is by Lonhro, who basically has a New Zealand pedigree and has a huge fan base here. Sweynesse compliments this with his Gr.1 form, and we feel very lucky to have the opportunity to stand him.” Novara Park’s aim is to stand stallions who are genuine Gr.1 performers who also have pedigrees that are complimentary to the New Zealand broodmare population. The farm aims to breed the type of horse that New Zealand is best at, a classic horse at three who will get over more ground later on. Jakkalberry (IRE) (Storming Home-Claba di San Jore by Barathea), fee $NZ6000. JAKKALBERRY is the epitome of a tough, international Gr.1 performer. He raced from the age of three to eight in seven different countries. He won in every season he competed, including 18 NEW ZEALAND SIRES PREVIEW 2016

Jakkalberry (IRE) (Storming Home-Claba di San Jore by Barathea)

“THIS FARM MIGHT SEEM NEW TO PEOPLE, BUT THE OWNERS ARE VERY EXPERIENCED WITH A GOOD DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT OUR INDUSTRY.” RAY KNIGHT the Gran Premio di Milano-Gr.1 as a four year-old. As a six year-old, he won a Listed race in America, and was third in the Melbourne Cup-Gr.1 and Dubai Sheema Classic-Gr.1.

both the Randwick Guineas-Gr.1 and Gr.2 Hobartville Stakes (both times behind Hallowed Crown, who stands in Australia for $27,500). He also ran fourth in a strong Rosehill Guineas-Gr.1.

He won 12 races, including five at stakes level. He stood his first season at Paxton Park, then his second at Novara Park last year. He had four weanlings sell this year for up to $26,000, a great result for a stamina stallion. By Storming Home (Machiavellian-Try to Catch me by Shareef Dancer), sire also of VRC Derby winner Lion Tamer, Jakkalberry is out of an incredible broodmare. Claba di San Jore (ex Claw by Law Society) has left three Gr.1 winners, Jakkalberry, Crackerjack King (Shamardal) and Awelmarduk (Almutawakel), from her nine named foals, and six stakes horses in total. Another of her daughters has left two stakes winners including last year’s Italian Champion 3YO Circus Couture (Intikhab). Jakkalberry was a tough racehorse with a tough pedigree and he should leave horses to make New Zealand proud.

Sweynesse is the first son of Lonhro to stand in New Zealand and with the likes of that sire’s champion son Pierro about to unleash his two year-olds, it is an exciting time to back a freshman sire from this line.

Sweynesse (AUS) (Lonhro-Swansea, by Singspiel), fee $NZ6000. A WINNER of his only start over 1400m at two, Sweynesse was thrown at the very best of Australia’s three year-olds in the spring. He won first up (1400m, Rosehill) and each of his 11 starts after that came in Group company. He won the Spring Stakes-Gr.3, Gloaming Stakes-Gr.3, was third in the Spring Champion Stakes-Gr.1 (behind Hampton Court and First Seal). In the autumn he ran second in

Sweynesse is out of an imported mare and the family has been quite a success for Darley. Sweynesse has a wonderful build-up of strong dam sires with his dam, Swansea (an Australian city winner) being by Singspiel (In the WingsGlorious Song by Halo) who left winners like Rewaaya (Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes-Gr.1) in a brief shuttle career here and a host of Gr.1 winners in the northern hemisphere. A grandson of Sadler’s Wells, Singspiel is young in his role as a broodmare sire and is dam sire of 47 stakes winners including Helmet and Epaulette. Sweynesse’s second dam, River Swan, is by the English Derby and 2000 Guineas hero Nashwan (Blushing Groom), and his third dam is the stakes winning Secretariat mare Fantastic Ways (ex Fantastic Girl by Riva Ridge), who left three stakes winners in America. There is plenty to like about Sweynesse as he embarks on his stud career. He is a Gr.1 performed son of Lonhro and showed in his racing career that he was capable of competing at classic level against the best of his generation.

RICH HILL STUD WONDERFUL SEASON BRINGS CONFIDENCE FOR THE FUTURE

STORY BY PAUL VETTISE

R

ICH Hill Stud can not only look back on the 2015-16 term with immense satisfaction, but also forward with supreme confidence. “Our foundation sire Pentire has had a great season and with two promising young sires like Jimmy Choux and Shocking and the support Proisir has had, it all augurs well for the future,” stud master John Thompson said. Pentire (GB) (Be My Guest-Gull Nook by Mill Reef), of course, is the sire of the Rich Hill graduate Prince of Penzance (NZ) who set Flemington alight in the spring when he repelled the European challenge to win an historic Melbourne Cup-Gr.1. “That was a huge thrill and not only for us, but also for the New Zealand thoroughbred industry,” Thompson said. The stallion has also been represented by the homebred dual Gr.1 winner Xtravagant (New Zealand 2000 Guineas, NRM Sprint). “Pentire has had 11 stakes performers and five stakes winners in 2015-16,” Thompson said. “He’s the leading New Zealand-based sire in Australia and his combined Australasian progeny earnings topped $7m in 2015-16.” Associate sire Jimmy Choux (Thorn Park (AUS)Cierzo by Centaine (AUS)) has made a flying start to his career and he is New Zealand’s champion first season sire in waiting as we go to press in late July. His leading representative so far is Manolo Blahniq, the winner of the Eclipse Stakes-Gr.3 and runner-up in the Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes for Cambridge trainer Craig Thornton. Now with Australian trainer Tony Noonan, Manolo Blahniq recently won at Hawkesbury trials in his first public appearance since the Listed Karaka Million in January. “I could not have been happier with his return to the track,” Noonan said. “We didn’t want him to have a gut buster and he went to the line without any pressure on him. I’ll consider which direction we take with him, the Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas are possible targets, but we'll trial him again and then most likely kick him off in the San Dominico Stakes.” Jimmy Choux has also sired the two year-old winner What Choux Want, a Group and Listed performer under the guidance of Riccarton trainer Andrew Carston. In Australia, Parlay Vous and Heptagon have been debut winners for Joseph Pride and Mick Price respectively, while John Sargent’s Echappe was successful second-up and

“HE WAS NEW ZEALAND’S MOST POPULAR FIRST SEASON SIRE AND COVERED 145 MARES,” JOHN THOMPSON Sweet Varden, prepared by Tony McEvoy, was beaten less than a length when fourth in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes. “Eighteen of his first crop went to Australia so he will have good representation there next season as well,” Thompson said. Jimmy Choux swept all before him at three with top-flight victories in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 and the New Zealand Derby-Gr.1, while across the Tasman he also defeated the best Australian three year-olds in the Rosehill Guineas-Gr.1. He continued his outstanding form at four to add the Spring Classic-Gr.1 and the Windsor Park Plate-Gr.1 and finished runner-up in the Cox Plate-Gr.1 and the Makfi Challenge Stakes-Gr.1. Jimmy Choux’s progeny are giving every indication of following suit and maturing into classic and weight-for-age contenders. Shocking (AUS) (Street Cry (IRE)-Maria di Castaglia by Danehill (USA)) also made a Gr.1 name for himself by winning the Melbourne Cup and the Australian Cup before retiring to Rich Hill Stud to make a success of the second stage of his

career. He has produced 26 individual winners from 76 runners, which includes the New Zealand Oaks-Gr.1 winner Fanatic and the Championship Stakes-Gr.2 winner The Hassler, while High Class, Megawatt and Electric Aura are all stakes placed. “He’s also had two winners from two runners in Hong King, including Love Shock who is a very talented horse,” Thompson said. The newest member of the Rich Hill team Proisir (AUS) has also received a royal welcome from breeders. “He was New Zealand’s most popular first season sire and covered 145 mares,” Thompson said. The son of the international Gr.1 winner and sire Choisir won his first three starts and was narrowly beaten in two Gr.1 contests by the champion galloper (It’s a) Dundeel. Out of the Encosta de Lago mare Prophet Jewel, Proisir’s brother is also poised to add to the family roll of honour. Trained by John Hawkes and his sons Michael and Wayne, Divine Prophet has won one of his three starts and showed his quality in the autumn when he finished third in the Champagne Stakes-Gr.1 at Randwick.

THE OAKS STUD ANOTHER STELLAR SEASON FOR DARCI BRAHMA

STORY BY RENÉE GEELEN

T

HE Oaks Stud continued to build on its winning ways during the 2015-16 season. One highlight came when resident stallion Darci Brahma sired the CJC NZ 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 winner Risque (ex So Explicit by Straight Strike), a home bred for the stud who went on from that win in November to win a Gr.3 at Caulfield in February first-up. Transferred to David Hayes and Tom Dabernig for her Australian campaign, the filly also ran third in the Australian Guineas-Gr.1 next time out and has been in the first three in seven of her 10 starts. She is the seventh Gr.1 winner off the property in recent years. Other highlights include dual NZ Horse of the Year and seven-time Gr.1 winner Seachange (by Cape Cross and now dam of the Bendigo Cup-Gr.3 placed Divan); 2012 NZ Oaks quinella Artistic (Darci Brahma) and Zurella (Zabeel); and ill-fated dual Gr.1 winner Recite (Darci Brahma). The Oaks also races promising three year-old and Gr.1 placed Reminisce (Roc de Cambes). “We are exceedingly proud of Darci Brahma. During the 2015-16 season he has sired 10 black type winners, which places him among the elite stallion in Australasia,” general manager Rick Williams said. Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill (USA)-Grand Echezeaux by Zabeel), fee $NZ15,000 DARCI Brahma has it all. He is the sire of eight Gr.1 winners, and his six crops have produced 28 stakes winners including Australian Oaks-Gr.1 winner Gust of Wind (also fourth in the 2015 Caulfield Cup); and dual Gr.1 winners Julinsky Prince, Nashville, and Recite. His Singapore Horse of the Year Super Easy now stands at stud in New Zealand; and Majestic Moments recently ran second in the Singapore Derby-Gr.1. Darci Brahma was always destined to be special, he was a millionaire yearling who won five Gr.1 races at two, three and four. He was crowned Champion 2YO, Champion 3YO and as a four yearold he was named Champion Sprinter. Now he has made his mark as a stallion and has cemented his place as a proven sire of Gr.1 winners. Darci Brahma’s dam Grand Echezeaux won the SAJC Australasian Oaks-Gr.1 and her five winners also include the Gr.3 winner Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice). Her three-quarter sister Romanee Conti (Sir Tristram), a Gr.3 winner and Gr.1 placed, is the dam of Melbourne Cup-Gr.1 heroine Ethereal (Rhythm). The extended family had another Gr.1 winner in 2015-16 when Howard Be Thy Name (Redoute’s Choice) was successful in the South Australian Derby

NIAGARA, whose second dam Twyla is by Danehill (USA) and from famed matron Dancing Show (USA) by Nijinsky, is a Gr.2 winning son of Champion Sire Encosta de Lago. He is from the stallion making family of Gr.1 winners and sires Redoute’s Choice, Umatilla, Hurricane Sky, Al Maher and Manhattan Rain.

He was an unbeaten two year-old in Japan, winning all three of his juvenile starts, including a Listed race. At three, he won a Listed race and was third in the Kyoto Kikuka Sho-Gr.1. He ended the season as the equal highest rated three yearold colt in Japan. All up, he won more than ¥189 ($A1.89m) and retired back to his place of birth.

Niagara has plenty to offer breeders as he was a $620,000 yearling with looks to match and he placed in Sydney as a two year-old before being asked big questions as a three year-old. Twice Group placed, including second in the Sandown Guineas-Gr.2, Niagara was aimed at the Doncaster as a four year-old. On the way, he won the Ajax Stakes-Gr.2 over 1500m.

His oldest runners have just turned four and show plenty of promise. He’s Our Rokkii is a dual Gr.3 winner in Australia, while Reminisce won twice in 2015-16 as a two year-old and was Gr.1 placed in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce.

He commenced his stud career at Lime Country Thoroughbreds and will stand his first season at The Oaks in 2016. His first crop youngsters turned two on August 1. Sold as yearlings early in 2016, his first crop averaged $53,333 at the NZ Select Sale. WAIKATO STUD THE FUTURE HAS NEVER LOOKED BRIGHTER

STORY BY RENÉE GEELEN

W

aikato Stud is a farm that takes the words of Chinese philosopher Confucius and makes them real. He said “Study the past if you would define the future.” Since its inception in 1993, Waikato Stud hasproduced over 30 Gr.1 winners and each season has averaged 12 stakes winners off the farm. They have used their achievements as a solid basis for growth, and this year have expanded again with the purchase of two new properties. This takes their holdings up to a substantial 1,700 acres on which to define the next step in their future. Owner/Manager Mark Chittick said “Savabeel has had another huge season and is likely to be awarded all three NZ stallion awards. He is travelling at just under 10% stakes winners to runners, making him a statistical phenomenon. Moving into the next phase on the farm, we are extremely excited for Ocean Park and Rock ‘n’ Pop’s first runners this year; they all sold well, have gone to good homes and will get every opportunity. We are looking forward to the first foals of dual Doncaster winner Sacred Falls this spring. He served four G1 producers, 20 stakes producers & 12 stakes winners.” Sacred Falls (NZ) (O’Reilly – Iguazu’s Girl, by Redoute’s Choice), NZ$30,000. The dual Gr.1 Doncaster winner (as a three year-old and four year-old) will welcome his first crop of foals in the coming months. A son of Waikato Stud’s Champion Sire O’Reilly, Sacred Falls was a tough, sound galloper who performed consistently against the best that Australia could throw at him. Unbeaten at two in New Zealand, he won their Classic, the Gr.1 Two Thousand Guineas over a mile before being sent to Australia. Over the next three seasons, he won three Gr.1 races and ended his career with a total of nine wins and nearly $5million. Savabeel (NZ) (Zabeel – Savannah Success, by Success Express), NZ$100,000. Last season’s Champion NZ Sire has done it again, and in 2015/16, he will collect all three major stallion awards in NZ. In total, Savabeel has sired 50 stakes winners, eleven of them in the current racing season. His star in Australia this year was the tough mare Lucia Valentina who won the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth. She now has three Gr.1 wins and earnings over $4million. In New Zealand this season, Savabeel left the triple Gr.1 winner Kawi. Ocean Park (Thorn Park – Sayyida, by Zabeel), NZ$30,000. With an average yearling price of over $100,000 for his first crop, with his top lot selling for $330,000 to Colm Santry, there were plenty of buyers interested in the progeny of five-time Gr.1

BEAUTIFULLY BRED ROCK ‘N’ POP LIVED UP TO HIS ILLUSTRIOUS PARENTS BY WINNING THE GR.1 TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS IN NEW ZEALAND. winner Ocean Park. He was first seen as an early three year-old and won his first two races. He won the Gr.3 Wellington Stakes and placed in two other group races before being sent to Australia where he ran second in the Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas. Spelled and brought back at four, Ocean Park won four Gr.1 races in succession, the last being the WS Cox Plate. In the autumn, he won the Gr.1 New Zealand Stakes. Pins (Snippets – No Finer, by Kaoru Star), NZ$25,000. Twice crowned Champion Sire in Hong Kong, Pins is a Gr.1 Australian Guineas winner who has built a reputation for siring tough gallopers who cope under the trying conditions in Hong Kong. His stars over there include international galloper Aerovelocity (winner of Gr.1 races in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore) and dual Horse of the Year Ambitious Dragon. Closer to home, Pins has left eight Gr.1 winners among his 69 stakes winners. Rock ‘n’ Pop (Fastnet Rock – Popsy, by Sir Tristram), NZ$9,000. Beautifully bred Rock ‘n’ Pop lived up to his illustrious parents by winning the Gr.1 Two Thousand Guineas in New Zealand. His dam, Popsy, was a dual Gr.1 winner who won the NZ Derby, and has also left stakes winner Lilakyn. Rock ‘n’ Pop almost copied his dam, running second in the NZ Derby to champion

mare Silent Achiever. His sire Fastnet Rock is emerging as a sire of sires; and Rock ‘n’ Pop’s first crop are about to hit the track as two year-olds next season. His yearlings sold up to $220,000. Rios (Hussonet – Gussy Godiva, by Last Tycoon), $NZ4,000. With less than 40 foals in his first three crops, Rios is the sire of Gr.1 winner Gaultier (who now races in Hong Kong as Simply Invincible). Rios was a strong three year-old, who won the Gr.2 Wellington Guineas and was placed in the Gr.1 Two Thousand Guineas. He raced on at four and won at Listed level. Rios is a half-brother to Gr.1 winner Roman Emperor, who stands at stud in Australia, and is from one of New Zealand’s strongest families. His dam is a half-sister to USA Gr.1 winner Black Mamba, and further back the family includes Gr.1 winners Tully Thunder, and Glorious Days.

WINDSOR PARK STUD CHARM SPIRIT A TRIPLE GR.1 HERO AT 1600M

STORY BY KRISTEN MANNING

C

HARM Spirit (IRE) was always going to be “a natural fit” for Windsor Park Stud. Not only had the high achieving Cambridge based farm stood eight times Champion Sire Volksraad (GB) from the same Green Desert sire line, but it had also been home to Montjeu (IRE), sire of Charm Spirit’s dam l’Enjoleuse. And Charm Spirit is a horse, says the stud’s general manager Steve Till, who has inherited the very best qualities of his sire Invincible Spirit (IRE) and his dam sire. “He has that lovely mix of strength from his sire and athleticism from Montjeu,” he said. Most importantly, Charm Spirit was a racehorse of the highest quality. At just his second start at two the Freddy Head-trained bay, having found trouble when a fast finishing second at his Deauville debut, was an odds on favourite in a 1400m contest at Longchamp. Winning that race with such ease, Charm Spirit was again in the market contesting the Prix Jean-Luc LagardereGr.1, 1400m at Longchamp on Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe day before running a game third. That form at two ticked the first of many boxes for Windsor Park, with a win and a placing at the elite level. But Charm Spirit’s accomplishments in his second and final campaign at three really stamped him as an outstanding stallion prospect. After a first-up win in the Prix DjebelGr.3, 1400m at Maisons-Laffitte, he then headed to England, finishing a close fifth in Night of Thunder's (Kingman second, Australia third) 2000 Guineas-Gr.1, 1600m. It was to be the last time Charm Spirit tasted defeat as from early June 2014 he embarked on a remarkable winning streak, two races in France, two in the UK, all impressive victories.

Charm Spirit (IRE) (Invincible Spirit (IRE)-l’Enjoleuse by Montjeu (IRE))

“HE IS A HORSE WITH GREAT TACTICAL SPEED, AND HE DIDN'T MIND A SCRAP. WHEN OTHERS CAME AT HIM HE’D STICK HIS HEAD RIGHT OUT.”STEVE TILL “He is a horse with great tactical speed,” Till said, “and he didn't mind a scrap. When others came at him he’d stick his head right out.” Describing Charm Spirit as a horse who “cannot be faulted,” Till said that the 16hh handsome bay is “a beautifully made individual, full of quality. He is well balanced and correct.” “He was an exciting racehorse held in high regard by Timeform and it is no mean feat to win three consecutive Gr.1 races, two of those against the older horses.” Till was delighted by the response to Charm Spirit when he first headed to New Zealand last spring, the regally bred stallion was well supported with a book of 123 mares. The stud’s Rodney Schick travelled to the Aga Khan’s Haras de Bonneval to inspectCharm Spirit's first foals and was impressed.

First it was a soft win (three-quarters of a length) in the Prix Paul de Moussac-Gr.3, 1600m at Chantilly, then a determined victory in the Prix Jean Prat-Gr.1, 1600m at the same track. Then he took on the older horses, the best milers in Europe, in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp-Gr.1, 1600m. He proved too tough for his high-class rivals with Toronado second and Night of Thunder third.

“Like his sire and dam sire he is proving to be bay dominant and he is really stamping his foals with his strength and balance. The early signs are encouraging.”

From there he headed to Ascot on Champions Day where was able to again conquer Night of Thunder, squeezing through a gap to win the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes-Gr.1, 1600m, in gutsy fashion.

The fact that Charm Spirit shuttles from Haras de Bonneval is itself an indicator of the high esteem in which he is held. “It illustrates the quality of the horse,” Till said.

Retiring to stud as the winner of six of his nine races, Charm Spirit was keenly sought after by Windsor Park who recognised his “toughness, resilience and class”.

His sire’s highest money-winning son, Charm Spirit is by the prolific Sprint Cup-Gr.1, 1200m, winner and leading stallion Invincible Spirit, whose 97 stakes winners include the multiple Gr.1

winners Moonlight Cloud, Kingman, Shalaa, Lawman and Yosei. The latter was produced in the four seasons Invincible Spirit stood in Victoria, during which time he also sired the Gr.3winning sprinter I Am Invincible, one of Australia's most popular young stallions. I Am Invincible has proven to be quite the sensation, already represented by 12 stakes winners, the best to date being the dual Gr.1winning speedster Brazen Beau. And it is from Brazen Beau’s family that Charm Spirit hails (tracing to Windy Answer by Windfields), one already well known to breeders in this part of the world for having produced the influential stallions Encosta de Lago and Flying Spur, as well as Holy Roman Emperor, sire of Mongolian Khan (AUS) (ex Centafit (NZ) by Centaine). The latter, the first horse since the mighty Bonecrusher to win the New Zealand and Australian Derbys-Gr.1, 2400m, is also resident at Windsor Park Stud. He won eight races and $3.95m and his three Gr.1 wins also include the 2015 Caulfield Cup. And the rest of the stud’s roster is also high class; O'Reilly's Newmarket Handicap-Gr.1 winner Shamexpress, the English Derby hero Pour Moi (IRE) (Montjeu), whose Gr.1-winning son Sacred Elixir was one of Australia's most exciting two year-olds in 2015-16, Galileo's multiple Gr.1 winner Rip Van Winkle (IRE) and the ever reliable Falkirk (Tale of the Cat (USA)).
