The future of New Zealand racing looks bright with a 30% increase in prizemoney announced for the upcoming season in 2023/24, and naturally this will flow through to the breeding industry.

All roads will lead to Royal Randwick on October 14th , Australia’s richest ever raceday is sure to draw a record crowd to witness the world’s finest thoroughbred racing.

Huge purses attract the best thoroughbreds, it has always been thus. Ever since commencement The Everest has attracted the best sprinters in the land, large crowds and massive wagering turnover. The race is an elite Gr1 level contest in all but name run over 1200m at WFA. Importantly since the inaugural running in 2017 it has captured the imagination and interest of a whole new generation of racegoers, people my son’s age or even younger. Yes, your humble correspondent is no spring chicken.

The time-honoured George Main Stakes over 1600m at WFA has always been one of the most prestigious races on the calendar with an honour roll of winners including Winx, Lonhro, Emancipation, Kingston Town, Baguette, Wenona Girl and Shannon.

The establishment of thoroughbred racing in England under King Charles 1 and the subsequent ongoing Royal patronage of racing by succeeding monarchs including the late Queen Elizabeth II, whose lifelong passion it was, makes it entirely fitting that this epic contest should be upgraded to $5 million and be renamed in honour of her son, the reigning monarch King Charles III. The Royal family’s support of racing is more than just symbolic as the family members are renowned horse lovers and skilled horsemen and women.

The Everest is the world’s richest race on turf , but the prizemoney boost in NSW goes far beyond this single race. There have been significant increases at every level, from picnic meetings, country, provincial, midweek, Saturdays and at all stakes levels from Listed to Gr1 and innovative features such as The Everest, The Golden Eagle, The Kosciuszko, the Country Championships and others. Australia has the richest open racing jurisdiction in the world and Racing NSW is lighting the way.

Thoroughbred breeders traditionally have a choice to make, whether to breed to race or for the sale ring. The viability of either course depends heavily on the underlying prizemoney structure of the industry which appears to be on a very healthy footing in Australia and in NSW particularly.

Racing NSW CEO Peter V’Landys and Chairman Russell Balding have been very proactive in boosting prizemoney to ensure decent returns for participants in the industry.
