The countdown has kicked off for New Zealand Bloodstock’s 97th National Yearling Sales Series, featuring an outstanding selection of New Zealand’s finest yearlings set to go through the sale ring during the New Zealand thoroughbred industry’s biggest week of the year.

With a series of spring racetrack successes followed by a blockbuster Ready to Run Sale, the New Zealand industry has been on a high in recent months, and now New Zealand Bloodstock is keen to keep that momentum rolling right through to its main eventKaraka 2023.

A star-studded catalogue has been unveiled for Karaka 2023, which this year returns to its traditional timeslot in late January. The stage is set for a six-day selling extravaganza, with Book 1 running from 29 to 31 January and Book 2 following right in its footsteps from 1 to 3 February.

The quality of the New Zealand thoroughbred has been clear for all to see on the big stage in Australia this spring, and Book 1 of Karaka 2023 will shine a spotlight on yearling siblings to the likes of A$10m Golden Eagle (1500m) hero I Wish I Win (NZ) (Savabeel), Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) winner and Cox Plate (2040m) runner-up I’m Thunderstruck (NZ) (Shocking), plus big-race performers Mo’unga (NZ) (Savabeel) and Mr Brightside (NZ) (Bullbars).

An enormously successful Ready to Run Sale clearly showed what a difference that foreign flavour makes at the Karaka sales complex, and NZB is looking forward to welcoming a full complement of overseas buyers back through its doors in January of 2023.

“The Ready to Run Sale was wildly successful, particularly the absolutely incredible second day, and it’s given us some real momentum as we build into our yearling sale in January,” NZB Bloodstock Executive Kane Jones said.

“And you combine that with a spring for the history books for kiwi-breds and Karaka graduates in Australia. They’ve won at Group One level over a sprint distance with Roch ‘N’ Horse (NZ) (Per Incanto), over a staying trip with No Compromise (NZ) (Pins), and scored many other major victories in between.

“It’s been an outstanding few months that have really showcased the types of horses that we produce in this country, and now we’re really looking forward to offering another top-quality selection of yearlings at Karaka 2023.

“I’ve completed on-farm inspections of almost all of the yearlings already and have been very excited by what I’ve seen.

“The standard is very high across the board. We can’t wait to showcase these horses in front of an international audience, which we’ll have back on site for a yearling sale for the first time in three years.

“It’s going to be fantastic, and we’re really looking forward to welcoming back some familiar faces and welcoming new ones as well,” he said.

The Karaka 2023 catalogues have strength in both numbers and quality, with an elite selection of 644 yearlings to go under the hammer in Book 1, followed by another 435 in a quality Book 2 offering.

There are over 100 siblings to stakes winners in Book 1, with the spring carnival stars highlighted above backed up by the likes of Noverre (NZ) (Savabeel), Melody Belle (NZ) (Commands), Cool Aza Beel (NZ) (Savabeel), Mustang Valley (NZ) (Vanbrugh), Explosive Jack (NZ) (Jakkalberry), Kermadec (NZ) (Teofilo), Lim’s Kosciuszko (Kermadec), Excelida (Exceed And Excel), Dynastic (NZ) (Almanzor), Vespa (Elusive City), Subpoenaed (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle), Jennifer Eccles (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle), Aloisia (NZ) (Azamour), Madison County (NZ) (Pins), Lizzie L’Amour (NZ) (Zabeel), Hezashocka (NZ) (Shocking) and Tiptronic (NZ) (O’Reilly).

Book 1 also features sons and daughters of 89 stakes-winning mares, and it will showcase the progeny of a high-flying group of kiwi sires who have starred on both sides of the Tasman this spring, such as Savabeel, Almanzor, Per Incanto, Proisir, Vadamos, Vanbrugh and Ocean Park (NZ).

The outstanding stallion talent based on the other side of the Tasman is well represented too through the likes of So You Think (NZ), Extreme Choice, Capitalist, Deep Field, Dundeel (NZ), Fastnet Rock, Pierro, Russian Revolution, Written Tycoon and Zoustar.

Buyers will also get an early glimpse of the next generation, with yearlings by first-crop stallions Super Seth, Ten Sovereigns, Alabama Express, Blue Point, Castelvecchio, Cosmic Force, D’Argento, Dubious, Exceedance, Ferrando (NZ), Magna Grecia, Microphone, Omaha Beach, Pierata, Sneaking To Win, Strasbourg, Too Darn Hot, Wyndspelle (NZ), Yes Yes Yes and Zousain.

NZB invites you to join them at Karaka 2023 to experience an atmosphere like no other. The welcome will be warm, the drinks will be cold and the thoroughbreds will be exquisite. Experience NZB for the perfect blend of horses, people and place, while securing yourself the next generation of kiwi talent at Karaka 2023.

1 – 3 February

Roch ‘n’ Roll

New Zealand Bloodstock is delighted to welcome buyers from all over the world to Karaka this January for its first internationallyattended yearling sale since the pre-pandemic days of January 2020, and just a brief look at the recent racetrack results of Karaka graduates should be enough to bring buyers through the gates in big numbers.

Over the last five seasons, New Zealand Bloodstock graduates have claimed 124 Group One wins and 692 stakes victories. Just last season, Karaka graduates captured 21 Group One triumphs and a total of 99 wins at blacktype level.

That success has carried over into the first few months of 2022-23, with Group One glory over a wide range of distances during spring carnivals on both sides of the Tasman.

On the sprinting end of the spectrum, the spring highlight came with the remarkable Roch ‘n’ Horse (NZ) (Per Incanto) in the A$3m Group One Champions Sprint (1200m) at Flemington.

The chestnut mare was already a Group One winner over the same course and distance, becoming only the second New Zealandtrained winner of the time-honoured Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in March.

But she was somewhat overlooked among a star-studded Champions Sprint field, which

featured the likes of nine-time Group Onewinning champion sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi), last-start Group One winner Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai) and undefeated The Everest (1200m) hero Giga Kick (Scissor Kick).

But it was Roch ‘n’ Horse who came out on top again, calling on all her fighting qualities to edge out Nature Strip and a host of others in a blanket finish.

Roch ‘n’ Horse was bred by Little Avondale Stud, who offered her in their Book 2 draft at Karaka 2018. Racing in Little Avondale’s green and gold colours, she has had 18 starts for five wins, six placings and more than A$2.9m in stakes – almost 80 times her reserve at Karaka.

WELCOME BACK TO KARAKA

Another spring star in Australia has been the three-year-old Sharp ‘n’ Smart (NZ) (Redwood), who was a $55,000 purchase from Book 2 of Karaka 2021 and was passed in at the Ready to Run Sale later that year.

Trained and part-owned by Hall of Fame horseman Graeme Rogerson, the gelding starred in Sydney this spring with back-toback wins in the Group Three Gloaming Stakes (1600m) and the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m). He then ran in the Group One Victoria Derby (2500m) on a seven-day back-up, finishing a gallant second behind Manzoice (Almanzor).

From eight starts, Sharp ‘n’ Smart has recorded four wins and three second placings, earning more than A$1.9m – almost 40 times his purchase price at Karaka 2021. Smokin’ Romans (NZ) (Ghibellines) cost only $52,500 at Karaka 2018 but enjoyed a breakthrough spring four years later, claiming his first Group success in the Group Three MRC Foundation Cup (2000m) and stepping up to the highest level for a repeat result in the Group One Turnbull Stakes (2000m) two weeks later. He has earned over A$1.5m from his 25-start, nine-win career.

There are strong pedigree credentials around No Compromise (NZ) (Pins), who is a sibling to three winners including four-time Group One winner Tofane (NZ) (Ocean Park) and Australian Derby (2400m) placegetter Benaud (Reliable Man).

No Compromise himself was a $40,000 purchase at Karaka 2018 and showed some of that family ability from a very early stage in his career, but he went to a new level in October with a come-from-behind victory in the Group One Metropolitan Handicap (2400m). He has earned A$897,620 from a 32-start career that has produced seven wins and 13 placings.

$3,000 Karaka weanling purchase Callsign Mav (NZ) (Atlante), meanwhile, was already a three-time Group One winner in New Zealand and added an Australian one to his collection in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m). He has now earned over A$1.4m.

These results were part of a remarkable spring in Australia for New Zealand-breds, with other notable victories from I Wish I Win (NZ) (Savabeel) in the A$10m Golden Eagle (1500m) and I’m Thunderstruck (NZ) (Shocking) in the Group One Makybe Diva

Stakes (1600m). I’m Thunderstruck also placed in a further three Group Ones including the Cox Plate (2040m).

On home soil, the spring standout among Karaka graduates has been the undefeated and super-impressive three-year-old filly Legarto (NZ) (Proisir).

Bought for $90,000 from Book 2 of Karaka 2021, she improved her perfect record to fourout-of-four with a spectacular spring treble that culminated in a victory by almost five lengths in the Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m). She has earned $302,845.

Dark Destroyer (NZ) (Proisir), who was passed in with a $30,000 reserve at Karaka 2020, was a Group winner on both sides of the Tasman as a three-year-old last season. He made a dream start to his four-old-campaign, charging home to win the Group One Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings. He has banked almost $600,000. Karaka 2023 kicks off with the Book 1 session from January 29 to 31, followed by Book 2 from February 1 to 3.

Mover & Shaker

they aren’t going to be doing the best they possibly can for you. Safety and health are huge, as is individual feeding. Has there been a particular horse or horses that have given you great personal satisfaction?

Over the years there have been many but Able One (Cape Cross) would have to be at the top. I owned 50% of him with Sir Patrick and when sold he held the record at the old Select Sale. I was asked to present him again at the Ready to Run where he again topped the sale before he went on to be the Champion Miler in Hong Kong. To top two sales and be a Champion is unique and pretty cool, I think. Then I had two fillies, Montoya’s Secret (High Chaparral) and Nurse Kitchen (Savabeel) run one-two in the (Gr1) Vinery Stud Stakes. It was very satisfying to have two horses from the same draft quinella a Gr1 race in Australia.

in Australia, then Ireland and Japan before returning home to start Phoenix Park when I was 22 years old.

At any Karaka sale there is an aura of class that radiates from everything about Janine Dunlop and her Phoenix Park operation. From the way the horses carry themselves around the ring right down to Janine’s signature black gloves, it is clear nothing has been left to chance to get the optimum price for the seller.

What kick-started your passion for the industry?

The first horse my parents raced was a very good filly with the late, great Geoff Murphy called Brava Jeannie (Battle-Waggon) that won the big three Spring fillies races in Melbourne, the Thousand Guineas, the Wakeful Stakes and the VRC Oaks. I was about ten yearsold at the time and that established my love for Thoroughbreds before I went into the industry at 15.

Where did you start out and what were you doing?

I had one season at Pencarrow Stud doing yearling prep, funnily enough. I was never going to be a jockey and I didn’t want to be a trainer, but I found that with the yearlings I had a passion for growing young animals.

Since then Sir Peter Vela has mentored me through the industry and both he and Joe Walls have been fantastic. I still often go back to both gentlemen to this day.

After Pencarrow I worked for a season with the late Norm Hawthorne at Paramount Stud before travelling the world, working

22 is a tender age to be starting your own business, did you find it daunting? No, more an opportunity. Originally, in 1991, I leased out my dad’s place which is about 15 kilometres from where I am now. I had a gentleman called Ron Ladd give me my first decent horse which was a colt out of the Gr3 winner Irish Flirt (McGinty) that turned out to be the dual Listed winner McFlirt (Kaapstad). Getting a Stakes winner from your first draft is always a promising start. Another person fantastic to me in my early years was Sir Patrick Hogan who always gave me horses to prepare. Originally I approached Sir Patrick and said, “you are a leader in the industry and I’m looking for some support”. Looking back the worst thing that could have happened was if he said no, but he said yes and from that conversation he gave me a Sir Tristram colt to prepare. He wasn’t a typical Sir Tristram, but it was still very nice for a young person to have that in your draft.

That first year I presented four Premier yearlings and now after 31 years in business I think I’m the longest selling vendor as agent only in the country.

I don’t think there has been a horse out of a Phoenix Park draft that hasn’t impressed me, how do you consistently get them to peak on sale day?

Everything is very individual as we only have, maybe, 35 horses here all year round, so it’s about having the horse fit, well, happy and adjusted. You can have a big, physical horse, but for me mind and emotion go along way and if they aren’t in the right frame of mind

Mr Brightside (Bullbars) is your current standard bearer, what was he like to prepare?

Look he was a lovely horse, just not a genuine yearling sale type when he first sold. He was a little belter, a cracking type, had perfect X-rays and a Grade 1 scope, so I said to Phill Cataldo who did a lot for the late Laurie Laxon over the years, we had to buy this horse for him. Mr Brightside has changed hands since, but it is great when you can get a cheapie like that that can go out and win a Gr1 race. He still looks a boy on a man’s mission and over the next twelve months he will furnish into a magnificent horse, but what a thrill for the owners.

What can we expect from your draft at Karaka in January?

We’ve got 18 lots going forward by a wide variety of stallions, all with great pedigrees. We hand walk our horses and I can see some lovely big walks on them and I’m 100% confident some good horses will come out of this draft. On type I can’t single one particular horse out but on pedigree I have a Sweynesse half-brother to Explosive Jack (Jakkalberry) and an Ace High three quarter-brother to Ponderosa Miss (High Chaparral), both Gr1 winners. We’ve just completed our x-rays and scopes and my vet seems very happy with that so I’m going forward with plenty of confidence

What advice would you give to anyone entering the industry?

Ours is a wonderful industry with so many opportunities to succeed, and people appreciate hard work and someone being the best version of themselves. Do that and you’ll have a fantastic journey like I have.

STALLION PROFILE

8 2022 - Issue 6

Rich Hill Stud resident Proisir continues to build on the success of past years and his ongoing progress and popularity is a source of great satisfaction to John Thompson and his team at Rich Hill Stud. The good times keep rolling for the Waikato operation with its son of Choisir, who has already boosted his tally of elite level-winning progeny this season.

Proisir’s flagship performer to date is the Ken and Bev Kelso-trained Levante, who has wins in the Telegraph Stakes-GR1 and Waikato Sprint-GR1 on her honour roll and has performed with distinction in the strongest of sprinting company in Melbourne. Dark Destroyer added to his resume for Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott with a first-up spring victory in the Tarzino Trophy-GR1 before illness sidelined him.

Proisir has rapidly produced quality replacements and was the starring influence during the recent New Zealand Cup carnival at Riccarton. His daughter Legarto kept her unbeaten record when Levante’s stablemate romped home in the New Zealand 1000 Guineas-GR1 and son Pier struck for

the third time in four outings when he overcame a difficult run to claim the New Zealand 2000 Guineas-GR1 and complete a stunning Proisir double.

Pier is trained by the father and daughter duo of Darryn and Briar Weatherley with the family breeding and racing the three year-old with Barry Wright. They were joined in the ownership by high-profile Australian owner Ozzie Kheir, who bought into the gelding after his second outing.

Thompson is understandably proud of Proisir’s achievements and the stallion’s pulling power was again evident this year. “These results are what we’re in the breeding industry for, it’s been fantastic,” he said. “We shut him off this season at 180 mares and he’s a young stallion doing an outstanding job. He’s always had a lot of appeal to breeders with his looks, race record and pedigree.”

Now 13 after arriving at Rich as a fiveyear-old, Proisir has also endeared himself to Thompson and his staff with his gentle demeanour, which he has passed on to his stock. “We call him Ted because he’s got such a loveable character with a great nature and a lot of trainers talk about his good horses and how bombproof they are,” he said.

With stakes winners Belle Plaisir, Riodini, Aimee’s Jewel, Vitesse Bo, Waitak and Soldier Boy (at the time of writing) also on his CV, Proisir is a form stallion heading into New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2023 National Yearling Sale series at Karaka with 19 youngsters to be offered during the Book 1 session and 30 in Book 2.

“Without a doubt it’s the most he’s had in Book 1,” Thompson said. “The quality of his mares has increased over the last few seasons and he continues to go to another level. You have to be excited about what he can do in the future with the betterquality mares.

“We’ve got some lovely Book 1 fillies and a really nice line of Book 2 colts. The likes of Legarto and Dark Destroyer came from Book 2 so the reality is that he’s showed that ability to upgrade his mares and when that happens the sky’s the limit.”

Rich Hill will offer three quality fillies by Proisir in Book 1 with the first to enter the ring, Lot 240, a daughter of the winning Ekraar mare Honour Princess, a half-sister to stakes winner True Valour. Lot 424 is closely related to Group winner and The Gong winner Riodini while Lot 581 is out of an unraced Tavistock mare who is a halfsister to multiple Group 2 winner Only Words.

Proisir, whose Group 1-winning brother Divine Prophet stands at Aquis, was a talented performer during his racing days when under the care of Gai Waterhouse and won his first two starts decisively before distancing his rivals in the Spring Stakes-GR3. He then finished a close second behind Dundeel in the Spring Champion Stakes-GR1 and later placed in the Hobartville Stakes-GR2 and was runner-up again to Dundeel in the Rosehill Guineas-GR2.

He was subsequently sidelined by injury and after a rehabilitation period he joined Peter and Paul Snowdon’s stable. He trialled brilliantly in late 2014, but a decision was made to retire him after a recurrence of the injury.

“We had a call from Michael Otto who informed us of the horse’s availability. He was raced by brothers Tony and Mario Falcone and they have remained in the ownership group and continue to send mares over from Australia,” Thompson said.

“The reason I followed the horse so closely was that he was running against Dundeel, who went over there representing New Zealand and they had a couple of good battles in the Spring Champion and Rosehill Guineas.

“If you looked behind them in Guineas there were horses of the calibre of Sacred Falls, Rebel Dane and Ferlax, it was a pretty strong year. The other attractions about Proisir are that he’s by Choisir out of an Encosta De Lago mare who traces back to that fantastic mare Bridesmaid, she really was the Eight Carat of her time.”

Proisir stands alongside fellow proven stallions Shocking and Vadamos and younger associates Satono Aladdin and Ace High. The emergence of dual Group 1 winner and Golden Eagle hero I’m Thunderstruck have further boosted Shocking’s stocks while Vadamos’ daughter and Arrowfield Stud Plate-GR1 winner La Crique has been his star performer.

This season’s Blue Sapphire StakesGR3 winner Grand Impact has done Satono Aladdin proud, who has also been represented early in his career by black type performers Sacred Satono and Pennyweka. His yearlings have sold for up to NZ$360,000 while it’s also early days for Ace High. His whose oldest progeny are now juveniles and sold up to NZ$160,000 as yearlings.

The future looks bright for the Rich Hill roster and it’s shining young star Proisir. BB

Te Akau Towers

OVER

The Karaka Million twilight racing extravaganza serves as a perfect curtain-raiser to New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sales Series every year, and it is fitting that the syndication powerhouse that has dominated the leading buyers’ list at Karaka has achieved similar results at the high-octane race meeting that accompanies it. Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis has been leading buyer at Karaka for 17 years in succession, and he has been the buyer of all of the last six winners of the $1m Karaka Million 2YO (1200m).

The extraordinary sequence began in 2017 with an upset victory by Melody Belle (NZ) (Commands), who Ellis bought for $57,500. Racing in the colours of the affiliated Fortuna Syndicate, the remarkable racehorse went on to set a New Zealand record with 14 Group One victories. She earned $4m in stakes and was a two-time New Zealand Horse of the Year.

The following year brought the first of four winners in Te Akau’s traditional tangerineAvantage (Fastnet Rock). Bought for $210,000, she went on to record nine victories at Group One level and banked over $2m.

Ellis paid $380,000 at Karaka to secure Probabeel (NZ) (Savabeel), who won the 2019 Karaka Million 2YO in the black and gold of Cambridge Stud owners Brendan and Jo Lindsay. She would make history at the same twilight meeting a year later, becoming the first horse to win both the Karaka Million 2YO and Karaka Million 3YO Classic. She was also a four-time Group One winner in Australia, earned more than A$4m in prize-money and was a dual New Zealand Horse of the Year. Victory in the 2020 Karaka Million 2YO was a springboard to a stud career in Australia for Cool Aza Beel (NZ) (Savabeel), who was a $150,000 purchase at Karaka. The two most recent winners of the juvenile dash for cash, On The Bubbles (Brazen Beau) and Dynastic (NZ) (Almanzor), were bought by Ellis for $90,000 and $360,000 respectively.

The Karaka Million 2YO was first run in 2008, and a decade later another million-dollar race joined it on the six-race twilight cardthe Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m). Te Akau Racing has been quick to put together a proud record in this race too, winning it with Probabeel in 2020 and Pin Me Up (NZ) (Pins) in 2022.

Some things look a little different this year at Te Akau’s Matamata stable, with recordbreaking trainer Jamie Richards heading offshore to take on some of the world’s best in Hong Kong, and multiple premiership winner Mark Walker returning from a stint in Singapore to take his place at the helm. But the more things change, the more they stay the same - once again the powerful operation is putting together a strong hand for the midsummer showpiece race meeting.

Rhetorical (NZ) (Snitzel) and Balance Of Power (NZ) (Almanzor) both thrust themselves into contention with Listed placings in November, while the likes of Viva Vienna (NZ) (All Too Hard) and Tokyo Tycoon (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) have also provided bold auditions with stylish victories in lower grades through the spring.

In the 3YO Classic, Te Akau is likely to be represented by the Group Two Sarten Memorial (1400m) winner Wild Night (NZ) (Vanbrugh), who is currently the second favourite behind the undefeated Group Onewinning filly Legarto (NZ) (Proisir).

The Karaka Million race meeting has come a long way since its inaugural edition in 2008, when the million-dollar race was the only feature event on a card otherwise made up of special-conditions maiden races.

The Karaka Million 2YO and Karaka Million 3YO Classic are now joined by another race for New Zealand Bloodstock sale graduates, the $120,000 Karaka Cup (2200m), and the six-race program is otherwise made up entirely of Group races - the $180,000 Group Two Westbury Classic (1400m) for fillies and mares, the $130,000 Group Three Brighthill Farm Concorde Handicap (1200m) for open sprinters, and the $130,000 Group Three Cambridge Stud Almanzor Trophy (1200m) for sprinting three-year-olds. At a time when overseas buyers arrive in New Zealand en masse, the meeting showcases Kiwi thoroughbreds to the world.

With its regular venue Ellerslie undergoing a significant track renovation, the 2023 Karaka Million meeting will be held at Pukekohe Park on Saturday 21 January.

SUPER SETH

Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth won two of his three starts at two, and placed in the Listed Anzac Day Stakes. At three, Super Seth beat multiple Gr.1 winner Alligator Blood in the Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas, won twice at Gr.3 level, ran second in the Gr.1 Futurity Stakes against the older horses, and ran fourth in the Gr.1 All Aged Stakes.

“He’s all quality, a fantastic looking horse with the performance to match his pedigree,” Mark Chittick said when Super Seth retired. “Top of our list when it comes to sourcing a successful stallion is a turn of foot and Super Seth’s acceleration was mind-blowing. That was emphasized when he ran down Alligator Blood to win the Caulfield Guineas. Our past and present Champion Sires Centaine, O’Reilly, Pins, Savabeel and Ocean Park, all possessed incredible acceleration, but even they couldn’t have matched Super Seth’s turn of foot. That’s the quality we look for and he demonstrated that on many occasions.”

On the nod of his head, maybe a wink and an inevitable smile, David Ellis has conducted millions of dollars’ worth of business at Karaka.

New Zealand Bloodstock’s arena has long been the Te Akau chief’s favourite domain and with numerous Group 1 reasons. It’s serious business and the Te Akau chief delights in his pursuit of young thoroughbred talent and off the back of meticulous homework he rarely fails to land his catch. Multiple champions have been secured over the years for an ever-growing number of clients to share in the joy of winning.

“It’s a big team effort, for sure. The preparation for Karaka 2023 started with the release of the catalogue and each night I spend a couple of hours going through the pedigrees,” said Ellis, who has been the leading buyer at Karaka for the last 17 consecutive years.

PERSONALITY PROFILE

“The physical inspections start in December and we’ve got a lot of owners that are interested. It’s hard to say how active I’ll be until I see all the horses. That probably drives me most, if I see a nice horse I just want to buy it.”

Ellis has been purchasing at New Zealand’s National Yearling Sale for decades and enjoyed instant success, although not on the racetrack. “I bought my first horse at Trentham in 1984. It was a Sovereign Edition filly that I paid $65,000 for and we sold her for about five times that because the brothers and sisters had done exceptionally well in Australia,” he said. “She improved so much in value, we never raced her so it was a huge result.”

Soon after black type success came Ellis’ way with a daughter of Sir Tristram. “I remember the first stakes winner I bought out of Trentham was Sarah Fay, who broke the track

record at Randwick winning the Craven Stakes-Listed,” he said. Sarah Fay, who out of a Sovereign Edition mare, was a $210,000 purchase in 1987 and also finished third in the New Zealand Oaks-G1.

“The first Group 1 winner was in 1986 with Cosmetique (Easter Handicap) and I bought her privately. The last year at Trentham was 1987 and the first at Karaka in 1988 and I’ve bought there every year since. I think all up I’ve had 82 Group 1 winners.

Among his favourites is King’s Chapel, a relatively cheap buy who went on to enjoy a much- decorated career. “I bought him for $35,000 and he became the Champion New Zealand Three-Year-Old, Champion SprinterMiler and Champion Weight-For-Age Horse and Horse of the Year,” Ellis said. “He also won the equivalent of the Karaka Million, which in those days was run at Te Rapa.”

24 2022 - Issue 6

Ellis’ purchases have also gone on to success at the end of their racing careers. “We’ve got seven stallions at stud at the moment that we have bought out of the Karaka sale ring, that’s something we’re all pretty proud of,” he said.

Another remarkable purchase, and at just $57,500 in 2016, was the 14-time Group 1 winner Melody Belle. “She won the most Group 1s and then there was Avantage, who won nine, and she sold for $4.1 million, which is still a world record online price,” Ellis said.

Avantage had been a $210,000 Karaka buy while four-time elite level winner Probabeel came with a $380,000 price tag. “Fillies like Probabeel are hard to buy so naturally I’m really proud and I look forward to seeing all their offspring,” Ellis said.

Restocking Te Akau’s Matamata stable is paramount with Te Akau Head Trainer Mark Walker quickly back among the winners since his return from Singapore, now in the talented hands of expatriate New Zealand horsewoman Donna Logan, following Jamie Richards’ departure to Hong Kong.

“The future of the stable is buying nice yearlings and we’re lucky that we have a stable full of top owners who will want to reinvest. It’s exciting times,” Ellis said. “The stables are really going well and with all the big races to come.

“We’ve got a lot of nice horses like Wild Night (a $50,000 Karaka purchase), who won the Sarten Memorial-G2, and he’s coming back for races like the Karaka Million 3YO Classic and we’ve got a lot of nice youngsters for the two-year-old race.

“We trifectaed the Welcome Stakes-Listed recently with our juveniles and Mark still holds the record for the number of two-yearold wins in a season, 22 or 23 it was. Mark had his 100th stakes win in New Zealand when we won the Counties Cup-G3 with Aromatic and considering he’s been out of the country for the last 11 years that’s a pretty big achievement.” The daughter of Sacred Falls was bought by Ellis for $160,000.

Te Akau Racing has also been the dominant force in New Zealand’s richest juvenile event restricted to New Zealand Bloodstock graduates. “We have won the last six Karaka Million 2YO Classics in a row and the first five all went on to win Group 1 races and Dynastic was beaten a nose in the Sistema-G1 and he’s been gelded and will train on,” Ellis said.

Melody Belle started the ball rolling and was followed by Avantage, Probabeel, Cool Aza Beel, On The Bubbles and in 2022 with Dynastic, but their talents went beyond precocity. “Melody Belle was still winning Group 1s as a six-year-old and Avantage was still also winning Group 1s at that age,” Ellis said. “We buy horses that train on and we’ve won three of the last four Counties Cups with horses that we’ve bought at Karaka, we’ve had a lot of success with stayers as well.”

Ellis is acknowledged as one of the most successful and astute racehorse buyers, breeders, owners, and bloodstock consultants in New Zealand with his Te Akau operation employing more than 100 people in New Zealand and Singapore.

Brought up rurally in Pakuranga and a member of the Howick Pony Club, Ellis excelled at school and represented King’s

College, Auckland, at rugby, cricket, swimming and rowing. He developed an early love of animals and farming life and also attended Flock House Agricultural College in Bulls. He later graduated with a Diploma Degree in Agriculture, which required three years of practical farming experience, from Massey University.

Ellis subsequently purchased 575 acres in 1979 at Waimai Valley and bought a neighbouring farm in 1982 to develop the 4000-acre Te Akau Stud. His thoroughbred success was acknowledged in 2017 when he was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Racing Excellence at the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Awards. Three years later, he was appointed as a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) in the Queen’s Birthday Royal Honours.

Ellis is married to broadcaster Karyn FentonEllis, who was an inaugural Trackside TV presenter and continued in the role for 26 years. She is heavily involved in Te Akau Racing in specialist areas of communications, client liaisons, marketing, social media, website and co-hosting owners and friends with David at Te Akau Stud.

Like her husband, she has featured in the New Year Queens’ Honours’ List when in 2014 she was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to the community, to the Arts, and to racing.

“We strive to provide owners with the same emotional thrills of winning that I first experienced many years ago and carry on reliving every time we train a winner,” David Ellis said. “We continue to work with a great team of people and try to do the job better than everybody else.”

VENDOR PROFILE

Quality flows deeply through Cambridge Stud’s sizeable draft to New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale at Karaka. The buying bench can expect to be impressed by the 2023 offerings from Brendan and Jo Lindsay’s operation.

Diversity is a feature of the consignment and results from meticulous planning of matings for the esteemed members of the farm’s broodmare band. A fine array of Australasia’s leading stallions, as well as residents Almanzor and Embellish, will be represented and resulting in mounting excitement ahead of the auction.

“We made a conscious decision to send a lot of mares to Australia and it complements the draft very well, we’re really happy,” General Manager Marc Devcich said. “There is plenty of variety and the pedigrees match the

physiques so we’re pleased and delighted with the quality we have to offer.

“It will add plenty of interest to the inspections with yearlings by champion stallions through to emerging stallions such as our own horse Almanzor, and Embellish who has kicked off well. We are pretty optimistic, everything looks positive and we’re looking forward to welcoming all our Australian friends back to Karaka.”

Wootton Bassett’s multiple Group 1-winning son Almanzor has made an excellent start to his career, highlighted by Manzoice’s success in the VRC Derby-GR1. A number of choice offerings by the stallion are sure to be the subjects of widespread interest.

First up will be Lot 100, a colt out of the Shamexpress mare Choctoc from the family of former champion filly Samantha Miss. “He’s a very strong and mature type and he certainly

looks like a two year-old type. He is a wellmuscled, attractive sort and we’re very happy with him,” Devcich said.

He is also a fan of Lot 180, an Almanzor colt out of Fearless Choice with the second dam a sister to the brilliant, but ill-fated juvenile Amelia’s Dream. “He’s a later foal but he’s well developed and has really improved week by week. It’s a fast family and he is out of a young Lonhro mare and the second dam is by Redoute’s Choice so he has good genetics and is a really neat colt,” Devcich said.

“The Zoustar colt (Lot 203) is a good sort, a lovely mover and correct. He’s obviously by a champion sire and is out of a stakes-winning I Am Invincible mare out of an O’Reilly mare so he’s got champion stallions underneath him as well and that pedigree is matched by his physique.”

19 2022 - Issue 6
Cambridge

Embellish is represented by Lot 152, who is from the unraced Fastnet Rock mare Elegant Achiever. “He is a real brute of a horse and very similar to his sister Luberon, who was the first winner for Embellish and she’s been stakes placed,” Devcich said. “He is a really mature type with good muscle and has got a good attitude and we’re happy to be presenting him.”

Lot 464 is a well-credentialled colt by So You Think from the Listed winner Respin, whose first foal Balance Of Power has been stakes placed. “He is by Almanzor and will hopefully be running in the Karaka Million so there may be more updates to come. They are from a good commercial family,” Devcich said. Lonhro’s son is Lot 493 and he boasts an international background with his second dam Sagawara the winner of the Prix SaintAlary-GR1. “He is out of a Sea The Stars mare and it’s the Aga Khan’s family so there is plenty of black type. He is a good-looking colt with a lot of presence about him, I think a lot of lookers will be very interested in him,” Devcich said.

Among the fillies in the draft, high hopes are held for a daughter of Almanzor when she goes through the ring as Lot 126. “She’s a lovely type and from a top family. The mare has already left a stakes winner (Saint Patrick’s Day) and this one has got plenty of quality as well,” Devcich said.

A cracking daughter of Dundeel out of the Dehere mare Arceche, Lot 40, is a half-sister to the Waikato Cup-GR3 winner Mongolian Marshall and the stud has retained another Zoustar half-sister named Arrowette, who is showing an abundance of promise. “The Dundeel is probably one of the picks of our fillies, she’s a very attractive type with a lot of quality. She is well balanced and she’s definitely going to command plenty of attention,” Devcich said.

“The Almanzor filly (Lot 461) out of Red Melody is a really mature type with good muscle and stands over a bit of ground. She’s a powerful type and one that people are going to be interested in, she’s well balanced and she’ll catch plenty of eyes for second looks.”

Lot 488 is a chestnut daughter of Written Tycoon from the family of multiple Group 1 winner and producer Starcraft. “She looks a precocious type and moves well and is very uncomplicated. She is out of a young, stakes placed Savabeel mare and we think she’ll be one people target for two year-old races,” Devcich said.

Cambridge Stud’s familiar black and gold silks have also been to the fore on the track, most notably sported by the now retired Leith Innes when he rode Tavistock’s son Pinarello to victory in this year’s Queensland Derby-GR1.

Other more recent stakes-winning graduates of the farm include Stockman, Gunstock (whose half-brother by Belardo will be offered as Lot 6 at Karaka), Diss Is Dramatic (halfbrother by Almanzor in the draft is Lot 400), Our Hail Mary, Swords Drawn, Miss Ella and Tralee Rose. Young Werther’s spring was upset by rain-affected tracks, but did give a reminder of his quality when third in the Turnbull Stakes-GR1 on a good surface.

Marc Devcich and the Cambridge team look forward to parading this quality draft for buyers at Karaka in late January 2023.

Haunui

Pushed for a horse that Mark thought might surprise potential buyers he delved into Book Two and gave us Lot 974. “We’ve got a really good Ribchester colt out of Sapphire Lass (Charge Forward) that I think is a particularly nice horse and typical of a couple of the Ribchesters we’ve got. So don’t worry, if you miss out on him we have plenty of other nice ones! As with all Book Two offerings the pedigrees aren’t quite as strong, but when you’ve got a young, emerging sire like Ribchester there’s a little bit to like there.”

Sixty is the number for Haunui Farm at Karaka 2023. Come the sale sixty yearlings will walk onto the grounds all carrying the polish of over six decades experience as vendors at New Zealand’s premier sale. Managing Director Mark Chitty gave us the good oil on the Haunui draft.

Even a cursory glance through the catalogue will impress the reader with Haunui’s diversity of pedigrees. As Mark explained, “Everyone likes something different and we will be presenting yearlings by a wide variety of stallions. The draft is strong on close relations to current Stakes performers and amongst our offerings will be a horse for every taste and budget.” That is certainly the case, for in Book One alone buyers can snap up youngsters by the likes of market leader Savabeel, Derby winning sire Almanzor, reliable stallions like Per Incanto, Pierro and Ocean Park, exciting tyros in Super Seth and Zousain, a red-hot Ribchester and young guns on the rise like Proisir, US Navy Flag, Shalaa, Belardo and Tivaci.

In a catalogue littered with jewels Haunui will proudly present a glistening diamond, a rare opportunity to buy a half-sister to a 14time Gr1 winner. “We will offer one of the highlights of the sale as Lot 344, a Pierro halfsister to the Champion mare Melody Belle out of Meleka Belle by Iffraaj,” Mark told us. “She’s a nice, medium sized filly, very correct with inherent strength. You can see the mixture of Pierro and Iffraaj in her. Though she’s not a big filly she stands over nice ground and moves well. This filly has only come up for sale as her breeder Mrs Marie Leicester has kept the last couple of fillies out of the dam.”

One measure of continued success off a farm is how it nurtures particular families, and

Haunui will offer several lots that can be traced back to where it all began. “We have a couple of fillies in the draft that trace back to Foxona (Foxbridge), a foundation mare at Haunui from the late 1950’s,” said Mark. “One of those is Lot 616, a daughter of an exciting first crop stallion in Super Seth out of the Gr3 winner Valpolicella, dam of the Group winners Vavasour, Vilanova and Celebrity Dream along with Gr1 Sydney Cup second Rondinella. Another is Lot 466, by Ocean Park out of the young Reliable Man mare Rina Bettina, a half-sister to Valpolicella so you can see they carry very deep pedigrees.”

When asked for a couple of star colts Mark again went straight to a son of Gr1 Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth. “We do vend on behalf of GSA Bloodstock so we have a good sprinkling of Super Seths in amongst the draft and there’s probably no better colt than Lot 207. He’s out of the unraced Oasis Dream mare Garden Of Swans, a half-sister to the Gr1 Eclipse Stakes winner Mukhadram (Shamardal) from a high-quality European family. We will also offer Lot 417, a lovely big colt by Almanzor, sire of the Victoria Derby winner Manzoice from his first crop, out of the Green Desert mare Patrimonium. This is another lovely family that traces back to some great European performers like Opera House (Sadler’s Wells) and Colorspin (High Top). It is well-proven in the Southern Hemisphere through Polish Princess (Polish Precedent), her Group winning sons Leebaz (Zabeel) and Polish Knight (Encosta De Lago), and her grandson, the current Gr2 winner Mr Mozart (Snitzel). This colt is a particularly nice individual”

Sprinkled through the draft are youngsters from the first Haunui conceived crop of Ribchester, a stallion making waves at present. “Ribchester has this season’s (Gr3) Maribyrnong Plate winner in Krakarib along with the very speedy three-year-old filly Red Card in Melbourne from crops that couldn’t be called large. That he is by Iffraaj suggests his stock will get better with time as well.”

Both the Gr1 winner Western Empire (Iffraaj) and the exciting Gr3 winner Showmanship (Showcasing) came off of Haunui as did Rhetorical (Snitzel) who is twice a winner and Stakes placed already this season as a juvenile. Highden

Highden Park and Hong Kong racing go hand in hand, with Highden Park’s graduates including dual Horse of the Year Beauty Generation, and Hong Kong Derby winners Sky Darci and Ping Hai Star. They’ve also sold Gr1 Australian Oaks winner Toffee Tongue, Gr3 Frank Packer Plate winner Kinane and several New Zealand group winners.

“Our strength is Hong Kong, and we’ve selected this draft with Hong Kong in mind,” said Libby Bleakley. “The way we produce our horses at Highden Park works with the racing environment in Hong Kong and we are leaning into that strength with this year’s yearlings. It’s a matter of focusing on what we excel at. Hong Kong has proven to be our main stage with Beauty Generation and others. We have so much respect for the people there, the racing, and the product. To be competitive in Hong Kong takes a very good horse and we want as many good horses as possible from our boutique operation.

In 2023, Highden Park will offer a select draft of ten yearlings. “Our colt selections for this year were picked with an eye for Hong Kong, and we specifically bought types we like that were either siblings of horses that have raced well there, or were by sires that have good results in Hong Kong.”

Proisir has had a massive season with three Gr1 winners this spring in New Zealand, and Highden Park will take his first yearling of the season through the ring with Lot 3. This

Proisir colt is the second foal of winning Tavistock mare Zanyetta, who won four races and is a full sister to Listed winner Titanium, with both being out of Gr3 Summer Cup winner Zanetta.

First season sire and dual USA Gr1 winner Omaha Beach has a yearling colt, Lot 157, who is the second foal of winning mare Empress Zhao (Swiss Ace), a half-sister to Hong Kong group winner Ho Ho Khan, and a full sister to Australian Listed winner East Asia (Swiss Ace).

Starspangledbanner colt, Lot 297, is the second foal of a winning High Chaparral mare who is a half-sister to stakes placed winner Peyton Place and is also out of a winning full sister to boom two year-old Amelia’s Dream. This is the only colt being sold in the Southern Hemisphere with the exact same cross as Hong Kong Champion California Spangle, being out of a High Chaparral mare.

Star Turn’s Cordyceps Six is on fire in Hong Kong, and Lot 660 has a pedigree designed for that market, being out of a young winning Testa Rossa half-sister to Gr1 HKJC Champions Mile winner Southern Legend.

Magnus has been a stalwart sire in Australia, consistently leaving good horses, and his colt, Lot 628, is out of winner producing mare Viva Dubai. A winner at two, Viva Dubai boasts six winners from as many to race, and is related to Gr1 winner Grand Delight. “Every single foal on this page is a winner, which is incredible.”

Wellington’s sire All Too Hard has a colt, Lot 809, who is the first foal of winning Savabeel mare I’m Kate, a daughter of Listed winner of eight races, Shandream. Lot 700 is a Shocking colt from a young O’Reilly mare who descends from the Grosvenor family. Shocking over O’Reilly mares has already produced Gr2 winners Chocante and Self Obsession.

“At Highden Park we are very selective with the fillies we bring to market. The sale ring can be a tough place for a filly so we choose to present only those that we believe can compete at an elite level. From limited numbers, our record for producing fillies able to perform at Stakes level is impressive and our three girls this year have all the head turning qualities that high class fillies have; Beautiful walk, bold attitude and a big appetite. We are lucky to be preparing them.”

First season sire Blue Point’s filly, Lot 442, has plenty of residual value as the first foal of fourrace winner Pure (Pierro) who is a half-sister to Gr1 winner Flying Artie and stakes placed winner Belflyer, from the family of Better Loosen Up.

Dual Gr1 winner Ace High’s first crop are two year-olds, and his yearling filly, Lot 230, is out of a young Pentire mare who is a full sister to Gr1 Auckland Cup winner Chenille, and a half-sister to group winner Chintz, dam of Gr2 two year-old winner Not An Option. This is also the family of Australian dual Gr1 winner Mo’Unga.

Young emerging sire of Gr1 Lion’s Roar is Contributer, and his filly, Lot 8, is out of a daughter of Gr1 Champagne Stakes winner Euphoria, making this filly’s dam a half-sister to Listed winner Fleet, and to the dam of Gr1 Robert Sangster Stakes winner Secret Agenda.

When a property can boast multiple Gr1 winners, buyers should pay attention. Phoenix Park have sold Gr1 winners Mr Brightside, Montoya’s Secret, Princess Jenni, and The Chosen One in recent years, not to mention dual Gr2 winner He’s a Doozy, Listed winner and Gr1 placed Deerfield who recently took his record to 13 wins and 14 placings from 52 starts. Throw in group winners Samara Dancer, Rockdale, Marju Snip, Lim’s Prestige, She’s A Meanie, Éclair Big Bang, My Gold Bracelet, Aotea Lead, Flying Mascot, Rocha Clock, Kinane, Reliable Team and Mauna Kea, and the Champion Miler in Hong Kong Able One, Phoenix Park is a serious producer of quality racehorses.

“I’m really happy with our draft going forward. Doesn’t everyone say that?” said Janine Dunlop with a laugh. “But it’s true. In general, we have a draft of eighteen horses that gives an option for people across different markets. There’s a few siblings to Gr1 winners, some staying types, and some earlier maturing ones. It’s a good even draft in terms of physical quality. At Phoenix, we consistently sell top order horses with Mr Brightside and He’s a Doozy both excellent flag bearers this season for lesser outlay in the sales ring, and Reliable Team in Hong Kong. Our track record proves that we sell top class horses every year.”

In 2023, Phoenix Park will present a draft of eighteen yearlings at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, led by Lot 168, a half-brother to triple Derby winner Explosive Jack (Australian Derby, South Australian Derby, Tasmanian Derby), out of Listed winner Extra Explosive. This colt is one of three yearlings by Sweynesse, sire of Dragon Queen, Lucky Sweynesse, etc. Lot 66, a Sweynesse half-sister to recent stakes placed winner Nothing Compares is from a strong colonial family; and Lot 13 is a half-brother to group placed winner Guillada and group placed winner Aquamosa from the family of Champion 3YO Sprinter in Singapore Big Maverick.

From the second crop of dual Gr1 winner Ace High comes a colt, Lot 53, who is a half-brother to Gr1 Easter Handicap winner Pondarosa Miss, Listed winner and Gr1 placed Ecuador,

and two stakes placed winners. This colt’s dam is a half-sister to Gr2 Waikato Gold Cup winner Bak Da Chief, dam of dual Gr1 winner Te Akau Shark.

A filly from Listed winner Nigelissima (Pentire) is Lot 372, and she has plenty of residual value, being by exciting young sire U S Navy Flag, while her dam is a three-quarter sister to Gr2 Empire Rose Stakes winner and Gr1 placed Zanna (Pentire).

Two closely related yearlings will sell in consecutive lots. The first foal of winning mare and Gr1 NZ One Thousand Guineas placed The Lustre is Lot 589, a filly by Per Incanto, sire of recent Australian Gr1 winner Roch ‘n’ Horse, while The Lustre’s half-brother is a nicely bred Ribchester colt, Lot 590. He is out of Listed winner The Pearler, who left The Lustre, Australian city winner Sky Horse (who ran fourth in the Gr3 Gunsynd Classic), as well as two other winners. This is the great ‘The’ family of The Wink, The Dimple, Irish Chance, The Grin, The Fantasy, The Phantom, The Phantom Chance etc.

Multiple Champion Sire Savabeel is represented in the Phoenix Park draft by Lot 353, a colt who is the first foal of winning mare Miss Scandinavia who is a granddaughter of Champion 2YO and 3YO in Australia, Miss Finland (dam of Gr1 winner Stay With Me, dam of Listed winner Waltz on By).

Proven sire Darci Brahma has twelve Gr1 winners, and his colt, Lot 236, is the second foal of winning High Chaparral mare High Tranquility, a half-sister to stakes placed winner Let’sdeal, from an American family that includes Champion 2YO Filly in Canada Fantasy Lake.

Almanzor made his mark early with Gr1 Victoria Derby winner Manzoice in his first crop, currently three year-olds, and his colt, Lot 135, is the first foal of an Dalghar half-sister to Listed winner Sacred Day, while this colt’s third dam is Listed winner and Gr1 placed Full Noise.

Tarzino has started his stud career well, with Gr1 Queensland Oaks winner Gypsy Goddess and Gr1 South Australian Derby winner Jungle Magnate, and his filly, Lot 234, is out of a High Chaparral mare whose first two foals to race are both winners. Her second dam is a Listed winning half-sister to Showtime, dam of Game On.

A Super Seth colt, Lot 208, is the second foal of a Fastnet Rock daughter of Gr1 Telegraph Handicap winner Guiseppina, who is out of Listed winner Battocchi.

Vinolass recently won on debut in Australia, and her half-sister by Star Witness is Lot 20. This filly’s second dam is Gr1 winner The Party Stand and this is the family of four-time Gr1 winner Callsign Mav.

A Shamus Award filly, Lot 138 is the first foal of a Lonhro mare who is a half-sister to Gr2 Great Northern Guineas winner Knight’s Tour, from a strong European family that includes Gr1 winner Laverock (Octagonal) and Pierro (Lonhro).

Two yearlings by second season sire Justify are Lot 543, a half-sister to Australian city winner French Emperor, out of stakes placed winner Special Memories (Fastnet Rock), a half-sister to Gr1 winner Unforgotten. Lot 514 is a colt out of a winning half-sister to Gr3 Desert Gold Stakes winner Showbeel, and his third dam is the dual Gr1 winner and Champion racemare Showella (dam of Champion Stayer Showcause, group winner Safwan, and Listed winner Safwa).

Phoenix Park will present two colts by Gr1 sire Vadamos whose filly La Crique won a Gr1 mile this season. Lot 324 is the second foal of a Redoute’s Choice mare from the Habibti branch of the Eight Carat family, while Lot 577 is the third foal of a Tavistock mare who is from the family of Gr1 winners Spartacus, Blazing Speed and Laganore, as well as Gr2 winner Johan Cruyff, and Gr3 winner Meteor Shower.

Mapperley

Brutal, So You Think and Dundeel. Mapperley Stud has three active Gr1 winning stallions standing in Australia and they are just the beginning of a long list of incredible graduates off their rolling Waikato hills.

“It is very rewarding for us at Mapperley to see three stallions that were raised on our farm doing great things at stud,” said Simms Davison. “Our 2021 draft had a great result with Leedox winning the Listed Auckland Futurity Stakes at his second start as a twoyear-old. The team at Andrew Forsman really rate him and they’ve set him for the 2023 Karaka Million 3YO Classic. We also have stakes placed Westwood from that draft who’ve just turned three, while earlier drafts include group winner Llanacord, Reliable Team, Age of Chivalry, Listed winner Campionessa, Star of Bombay, Our Boy Ritchie and Talaria.” Throw in Gr1 placed Le Villi and Mongolianconqueror, and the list of quality racehorses coming from Mapperley continues to grow.

With fourteen yearlings in book one and another seventeen in book two, things are busy at Mapperley Stud for the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.

“We are very excited to present seven yearlings by our stallion Contributer. He started his stud career really well with Gr1 Randwick Guineas winner Lion’s Roar, and has had two stakes winners in the last six weeks, which is great timing leading into Karaka. He’s a young emerging sire who was the Champion Second Season Sire, and his winners to runners strike rate is the best for any young sire in the country.”

Contributer (High Chaparral-Serisia, by Exit to Nowhere) was a dual Gr1 winner in Australia, winning the Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes (beating Hartnell), and the Gr1 Ranvet Stakes.

At stud, he has left Gr1 Randwick Guineas winner Lion’s Roar, Gr2 winner Llanacord, Listed winners Campionessa and Elizabeth Rose, as well as six other stakes placed winners from only 100 runners to date.

Lot 290 is a full sister to Gr2 Lowland Stakes winner Llanacord (Contributer) and she is out of a winning half-sister to Gr1 winner Ad Alta and Listed winner Posing. From the family of dual Gr1 winner Mo’Unga comes Lot 613, a colt out of Mo’unga’s dam’s full sister Update. “A lovely well balanced colt backed up by an extremely strong New Zealand family.”

A colt, Lot 615, is out of winning mare Valley of Pentire who has left two winners and is a

half-sister to dual Gr1 winner Hail. “He’s an out and out athletic type who looks like he’s going to run. A beautiful moving horse.”

Lot 28 is a colt out of the mare Altachine and is another standout in the draft.

“He’s a striking colt, a strong individual with a great hindquarter. He’s one that could go a little earlier and turn into a nice 3yo Guineas horse.

Other stallions represented in this draft are: Ace High, Ardrossan, Complacent, Dubious, Epaulette, Microphone, Ocean Park, Puccini, Tarzino, and Turn Me Loose.

“We have six yearlings in this draft by Tarzino who is an exciting young sire doing a fantastic job. The standout is the Mapmaker filly. She’s a stunner and will attract the Australian buyers as she’s an earlier maturing type being out of a Volksraad mare.

Out of Gr3 placed winner Mapmaker, Lot 335 is a Tarzino Filly, whose half-brothers are both winners at a mile. Her dam is a half-sister to Listed winner Hippopus and her first three dams are all stakes class racemares.

“It’s a nice well-balanced draft with a range of stallions, we have lovely colt by champion two-year-old Microphone who profiles to be an exciting first season sire”

Lot 45, a colt by Microphone, is a half-brother to Listed winner and Gr2 placed Star of Bombay (Atlante).

When assessing breeding which influences/ key horses do you mainly look for?

“Type first and foremost. It’s all about getting the right type. It’s easy to go online and get a good cross for your mare, but for us we first look at matching physical types as we are trying to produce a racehorse. We want to get as close as we can to the perfect athlete.”

“This is our main goal and we think our environment gives us a head start with our rolling hills and good pasture. All our breeding and preparation is about trying to produce athletes that we can present to our buyers. It’s our main focus, and we believe that is why our horses go on to win big races.”

Pencarrow

Pencarrow Stud rose to the challenge of the pandemic, supporting New Zealand Bloodstock with bigger than usual drafts, and the results from those offerings in 2021 are now three year-olds who have started their racing careers. From that 2021 draft, Kazalark (Vadamos) was sold to Australia, where he won at Hawkesbury at just his second start, then ran second in the Gr3 Spring Stakes at

start number three. He looks like a horse on the improve, as does Stella Splendida (Zoustar) who won on debut and most recently ran in the Gr3 Soliloquy Stakes at only her third start. Both Dunkel and Stonybreck won on debut, while Opito Ballerina won in Australia at her third start.

“Now that the borders are open again, we’ve gone in a slightly different direction for the 2023 draft. We have put together a strong draft

of yearlings that includes many yearlings from top mares that we raced, probably with more yearlings from good racemares than we’ve offered in the past. Mares like Guiseppina, Supera, Sleeping Beauty, Silver Eclipse, Dolmabache, and Wild Flower all raced in Pencarrow Stud’s ownership and now they are young mares with foals in our draft. It’s a good opportunity to buy into our best families, commented stud manager Leon Casey.”

VENDOR PROFILE by Rénee Geelen

In 2023, Pencarrow Stud will present a draft of 23 yearlings at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale. Pencarrow Stud raced Guiseppina, a mare with a brilliant turn of foot, who beat two subsequent Gr1 winners at her second start when breaking her maiden. After a long layoff with injury, she returned to win the Gr1 Telegraph Handicap over a mile winning a total of six races in her career, and her Snitzel colt is Lot 221. Pencarrow Stud have previously only offered two of her six earlier foals at auction, passing in Peppino (who is now an unraced broodmare) and selling her current three year-old Tavi Time in 2021 for $60,000.

The Ethereal family is a foundation family for Pencarrow Stud, and they have several yearlings from different branches of this family on offer in 2023. A colt with a stallion’s pedigree is Lot 145, by Champion Sire Written Tycoon, out of Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Dolmabache (Redoute’s Choice) who has already left two winners from as many to race. Dolmabache is a sister to group winner Pure Elegance, and a half-sister to Listed winner Cote d’Or. Dolmabache’s dam is a full sister to Gr1 winner Grand Echezeaux (dam of Gr1 winner Darci Brahma) and a half-sister to group winner Romanee Conti (dam of Ethereal). Lot 112 is a Super Seth colt out of Listed winner Cote d’Or, the half-sister to Dolmabache; while Lot 567, a filly by U S Navy Flag, is the first foal of Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Supera (Savabeel), who is a half-sister to group winner Eleonora (dam of recent Listed winner Ethereal Star), while this filly’s third dam is Champion Stayer Ethereal. Lot 573 is an Alabama Express colt who is the first foal of a half-sister to Supera and Eleonora; and Lot 69, is a Rubick colt out of winning Exceed and Excel mare Biddable who is a daughter of Gr1 placed winner Uberalles, a half-sister to Ethereal’s group winner Seraphim.

Pencarrow Stud bred and sold successful sire Darci Brahma from the Ethereal family and in 2023, they will present two of his yearlings; Lot 535 is a Darci Brahma colt who is the second foal of an unraced O’Reilly mare, who is the daughter of Gr2 winner Santagostino; while Lot 190 is a colt who is the first foal of winning mare Flourishing, a daughter of Lafleur, thus bringing together two of Pencarrow’s top

families.

The Habibti branch of the Eight Carat family has been nurtured by Pencarrow Stud after they imported her winning daughter Desert Lily, who left Gr2 winner Lafleur for Pencarrow’s racing team. Lafleur has been an excellent broodmare leaving Gr3 winner Amaryllis and Listed winner Papilio. Yearlings from this family on offer in 2023 include the aforementioned Lot 190, as well as Lot 638, a Super Seth colt who is the third foal of Listed winner and Gr1 placed Wildflower, and this colt carries close inbreeding to two super stallions in Danehill and Zabeel. First season sire and Champion Sprinter Blue Point has a filly, Lot 357, out of winning Zabeel mare Mojave Aster, a full sister to Gr2 winner Lafleur.

Gr1 winner Tis Juliet’s imported daughter Dance My Dance left Gr2 winner Rasa Lila and Gr3 winner Posavina. Posavina’s excitingly bred colt, Lot 433 is by first season sire Too Darn Hot, making him a half-brother to stakes placed winner Podravina. Lot 308 is a Vadamos filly who is the first foal of a Snitzel half-sister to both Rasa Lila and Posavina.

Another stallion prospect is the Savabeel colt, Lot 495, who is out of Gr3 winner Scintillula who was multiple times Gr1 placed and this colt is a full brother to Gr2 placed winner Butter Chicken.

First season sire and Gr1 Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth is represented by five yearlings in the Pencarrow Stud draft and all five are out of stakes class mares, with both Lot 112 and 638 mentioned earlier. Lot 526 is a filly, the first foal of Gr3 winner Sleeping Beauty, who is a half-sister to two stakes horses and the dam of Gr1 winner Herculian Prince. Another filly, Lot 520, is the third foal of Listed winner Silver Eclipse who is a daughter of Gr3 winner Zino Belle and this filly’s first four dams are all stakes winners. The fifth Super Seth yearling is Lot 253, a filly, out of Gr2 placed winner Irion whose first two foals are now winners with Pearl of Alsace winning on debut recently. Irion is a half-sister to Gr1 placed Octapussy (dam of three stakes winners), and to the winning dam of Gr3 winner Valpolicella.

A half-brother to Gr3 winner Lilikoi is Lot

58, and this Exceed and Excel colt is out of a winning half-sister to Gr2 winner Requinto, while his second dam is Champion 2YO Filly and Gr1 winning juvenile Damson.

The Pierro colt, Lot 75, is out of an imported winning Sea the Stars mare, and is her third foal. His dam is a daughter of Gr2 winner Kitty Matcham, one of five group winners for dual Gr1 winner Imagine.

Ocean Park has had a great season in Australia with Gr1 stars Tofane and Kolding, and his colt, Lot 327, is the third foal of tough racemare Makarska who won six races, and is a half-sister to Gr3 SAJC RA Lees Stakes winner Rhythm To Spare.

Eminent (Frankel)’s second crop colt, Lot 287, is out of winning mare La Adelita, a half-sister to Listed winner and Gr1 placed two yearold Rocanto, from the family of Gr1 winner Reigning to Win; while Lot 410 is a Vadamos filly out of a More Than Ready daughter of Gr1 winner Insouciant. Almanzor filly, Lot 481, is out of stakes placed winner Santangelo (Lonhro), a half-sister to Listed winner Kolonel Kev.

Lot 193 is a U S Navy Flag filly and she is the second foal of an imported Fastnet Rock mare who is closely related to group winner One Foot in Heaven, a daughter of Gr1 Hong Kong Cup winner Pride. Gr1 One Thousand Guineas winner Speciosa is also from this family.

2023 is an opportunity to buy yearlings out of Pencarrow Stud’s quality racing team, with yearlings on offer closely related to some of the best Australasian gallopers of recent years. It’s an opportunity not to be missed.

ETHEREAL not only won the Caulfield/Melbourne Cups double but has established a notable family at Pencarrow, which will have several representatives in the farm’s

Seaton

Seaton Park, the farm that sold Gr1 winner Volkstok’n’barrell continues to sell quality racehorses with recent group winners Hello It’s Me, The Soultaker, Choice, Listed winners Art De Triomphe, Langkawi, and stakes placed winners Tivaan Warrior, One More Time, He’s Got Power, Arctic Shock, City Slicker, Yogi, and Royal Mojito.

“We’ve had our biggest season to date at Seaton Park,” said Scott Eagleton. “We foaled down 215 mares and had another 80 dry mares to walk out to stallions as well. I’m really proud of our yearling draft this season. The horses are representing clients who’ve

been with us since we started in 2003, as well as some of our own. New Zealand bred horses have had a great season in Australia, and I’m looking forward to having the Australian buyers back at Karaka. With the quality of our draft and the international buyers back in town, it should make for a great sale.”

Seaton Park will offer five lots in book one and another fifteen in book two at the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.

The first foal of Gr2 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes winner Sensible Princess is an American Pharoah colt, Lot 501, and Sensible Princess is a half-sister to Listed winner and Gr1 placed Darscape Princess. “He’s a beauty who we will sell for a long term client of ours, Mr Bromley. The colt is an outstanding maiden foal, who stands over a lot of ground. He represents the type of horse that people come to New Zealand to buy.”

VENDOR PROFILE

From the same family is Lot 82, a Dundeel halfsister to both Sensible Princess and Darscape Princess, out of group placed winner Cape Princess. “A short coupled strong filly, who looks like she will go earlier than the rest of the family, and with plenty of residual value.”

Ace High filly, Lot 127, is the second foal of winning mare Dancilla (Iffraaj), who is a halfsister to group winner Decorah, whose first foal is an Extreme Choice filly who has won two of her four starts in Australia. “Her sister sold well last year, and she is a real staying type full of quality. I’m very proud of her as we bred her and own her.”

Tivaci hit the ground running with first crop Gr1 winner Never Been Kissed, and his colt, Lot 192, is the second foal of winning mare Foiling (Showcasing), who is a half-sister to group winner Gypsy Fair, and his third dam is Gr1 Queensland Oaks winner Round the World. “He is possibly the pick on type for this draft. Black, stunning, and a staying type colt, he catches the eye every time. A lovely colt.”

A Merchant Navy filly, Lot 235, is out of winning High Chaparral mare High Harmony, whose three year-old Impending Harmony ran fourth on debut in Australia recently. High Harmony is a full sister to Listed winner and group placed HIppopus, and a half-sister to group placed winner Mapmaker. “She’s potentially the dark horse of the draft. She was bought in Australia as a weanling by clients of ours and has grown into a lovely big scopey filly who will suit the local market, meaning she’s the staying type of horse buyers coming to New Zealand are looking for.”

In book two, the highlight is three colts by emerging successful sire Proisir (Choisir). “Proisir can’t do a thing wrong at the moment, and these are three lovely types by him.” Proisir picked up both the New Zealand Guineas races this season with Pier winning the 2000 Guineas and Legarto remaining unbeaten when winning the 1000 Guineas. Proisir now has four Gr1 winners, with the other two being 2022 Gr1 Tarzino Trophy winner Dark Destroyer and 2022 Gr1 Telegraph Stakes and Gr1 Waikato Sprint winner Levante. Recent The Gong winner (and previously second in the Gr1 George Main Stakes to Verry Elleegant) Riodini is among Proisir’s other six stakes winners.

Seaton Park’s three Proisir colts include Lot 721 who is out of winning O’Reilly mare Cristal Heights and is from the same family as Lot 680 who is the first foal of Blushing Heights, a half-sister to Gr3 winner Supreme Heights. This is the family of five-time Gr1 winner Sky Heights, Mapperley Heights, Rising Heights, and Royal Heights. Their other Proisir colt is Lot 978, and he is the third foal of a Savabeel mare whose winning dam is out of a half-sister to Gr1 winner Danestorm.

Dual Gr1 winner Ace High’s oldest crop are two year-olds, and Seaton Park will present two of his season crop yearlings. Lot 873 is a colt, the second foal of a half-sister to Ististar, who won ten races including four at black type level led by the Gr3 Cuddle Stakes. Lot 651 is a colt, who is the second foal of winning mare All Razzle Dazzle, who is a half-sister to group

placed winner Illinois Girl and this colt’s third dam is the tough Listed winner of seven races Faithful Thought, dam of two stakes winners. “He’s stunning. A big walking colt with plenty of presence.”

Gr1 winner Vanbrugh has sired an outstanding percentage of stakes horses and is emerging as a sire of real talent from very few opportunities.

From only 34 named foals, Vanbrugh has already left Gr1 winner Mustang Valley, Gr2 winner Wild Night, and Listed winner Sheez Dominant. Vanbrugh’s filly, Lot 945, is out of a three-quarter sister to dual Gr1 winner Monaco Consul.

First season sire, Royal Meeting, has a colt, Lot 906, who is the second foal of Gr2 placed winner of five races Nahema (Per Incanto), who is a half-sister to Gr3 winner Hammer Down from the family of Gr1 winner Plume and Maco’reilly.

Reliable Man’s filly, Lot 942, is out of winning mare Pushtheboundaries, who is a daughter of Gr1 winner Honor Bound, granddam of stakes winner Alibi and Honorable Spirit.

Other sires represented in the Seaton Park draft are Contributer (665), El Roca (734), Ocean Park (955), Reliable Man (942), Ribchester (957), Time Test (666 and 931), and Vadamos (950).

The Oaks

Tu.he Oaks Stud are back at the New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sales after taking a different approach during the COVID pandemic. With horses like Gr1 winners Catalyst, Avantage, and Miss Sentimental coming off the farm, their 2023 draft of yearlings is eagerly awaited.

“During COVID, with international buyers restricted from entering New Zealand, we decided to take a different approach to selling horses and took on the whole risk of taking them all the way to the trials for private sale,” said The Oaks Stud manager Rick Williams. “Those 2021 yearlings are now spring three year-olds, so we are about to find out if our judgement call will pay off. In 2022, we only took three yearlings to Karaka, and two of

them sold, both to local buyers. This year, the Australian buyers and the rest of the world should be back in force. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again, and we’ve put together a nice draft of ten yearlings that should have global appeal.”

In 2023, The Oaks Stud will present a draft of nine yearlings at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale. “It’s a very nice draft. I’m happy with them all at this stage and hope to find good homes for them all.”

So You Think filly, Lot 49, is out of Gr1 New Zealand Oaks placegetter and winner of two races, Aurora Lights who is a full sister to Gr1 Queensland Derby placed winner Westsouthwest. “A nice filly by a tremendous sire. I wouldn’t normally sell a filly as nice as her, and she’s only here to help us get back on our feet after the pandemic.”

Miss Sentimental (Reliable Man) was sold by The Oaks Stud and went on to win the New Zealand Oaks-Gr1, and now they will offer her three-quarter brother, Lot 457. This Reliable Man colt is the second foal for Miss Sentimental’s winning half-sister Recollect. From a strong Australian family that includes Gr1 winners Dracula, Complacent, Inspiration, and Wandjina etc. “A nice compact colt with good depth and a good walk”.

The first foal of winning mare Away Cruising is Lot 51, an American Pharoah colt, and his second dam is The Oaks Stud’s champion racemare Seachange, dam of Gr3 placed winner Divan. “A lovely moving colt.” Another of Seachange’s winning daughters is Sea Goddess, and her second foal is a filly, Lot 496, by Almanzor who sired Gr1 Victoria Derby

VENDOR PROFILE by Rénee Geelen

winner Manzoice in his first crop. “He is an absolute cracker of a colt.”

First season sire Magna Grecia has brilliant credentials being a Gr1 winning two year-old and Classic winning three year-old, and The Oaks Stud will offer his yearling filly, Lot 533, who is out of Pivotal mare So Lyrical, who has left two winners as this early stage. This is the family of Gr1 winners Bachelor Duke, Sonnyboyliston, and Talco. “A lovely filly that I have a lot of time for.”

Four yearlings are by The Oaks Stud resident successful sire Darci Brahma, led by Lot 572, a half-brother to The Oaks Stud sold Gr1 winner Sakhee’s Soldier. This colt is out of a winning Machiavellian mare whose five foals to race are all winners. “Of all the Darci Brahma’s we’ve bred recently, this colt is the closest in looks to DB Pin, who was a Gr1 winner in Hong Kong, and two of this colt’s full brothers have done well in Hong Kong too.”

Lot 259 is a full brother to Australian group winner Paint the Town (Darci Brahma), and his winning Medicean dam, Italic, has left six winners in total, who have won a collective 24 races between them. “Very powerful hind quarters and a sharp early type”.

Out of Listed winner Flying Firebird, Lot 191 is a half-brother to Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Smoulder (dam of group placed winner Embers (Darci Brahma)), and group placed winner Flaming. “A typical Darci Brahma and his half-sister ran third in the Gr1 New Zealand Thousand Guineas.”

The only Darci Brahma filly in the draft is Lot 303, and she is the third foal of winning mare Leica Lady, whose first foal is a three year-old who has been placed twice from five starts in Australia this season. This filly’s dam is a half-sister to the group placed winning dam of Australian stakes winners Stampede (Gr3

winner and fourth in the Gr1 Metropolitan Handicap), Thinkin’ Big (Gr3 winner and third in the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes), and Just Thinkin’ (Listed winner and fourth in the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes). “A good physical type.”

With The Oaks focusing on selling their last couple of crops privately due to COVID restrictions affecting New Zealand over the past three years, there has also been more focus on their racing team. “We have several good ones ready to step out soon. We are about six weeks behind where we wanted to be with our three year-olds as we’ve been waiting for the heavy tracks to ease. Of the three year-olds, we have a nice one with High Currency who looks like an autumn filly, and she is a full sister to Gr3 winner Consommateur. Keenasabean ran third on debut recently and looks like a Derby horse, along with an un-named Almanzor filly who is a half-sister to multiple Gr1 winner Bostonian”.

Introducing new improved APEX TABLES for both countries, exclusive to BLUEBLOODS.

BLUEBLOODS is now able to present APEX tables, in an improved format showing separate tables for Australia and New Zealand. APEX tables for Australia show ratings for only those stallions which stand (or have stood) in Australia. APEX tables for NZ show ratings for only those stallions which stand (or have stood) in NZ. There are now three separate tables for each country: the default ratings are for horses with at least 150 year starters in the previous seven rolling seasons (runners count as year starters in each season they compete and earn prizemoney); then there are also tables for horses with 100 year starters and 30 year starters which give an insight into the progress of first and second season sires or stallions which serve smaller books.

Finally, to recap, APEX A runners are those which earn an amount in the top 2% each season, B runners the next 2%, C runners the next 4%.

Therefore ABC runners are those earning an amount that falls in the top 8% each season (2+2+4).

For further explanation refer to previous issues. Special thanks to Arion Pedigrees NZ who have developed these tables for Bluebloods and to respected analyst Bill Oppenheim whose brainchild they are. Andrew Reichard, Publisher.
