here was no resting on laurels for New Zealand Bloodstock after November’s record-shattering Ready to Run Sale. Instead, the release of the catalogues for Karaka 2024 has launched the countdown to the pinnacle event on the sales calendar. The 98th National Yearling Sales Series will take place at Karaka from Sunday 28 January to Friday 2 February. The catalogues, which are now available to view online, contain an exceptional selection of 682 yearlings in Book 1 and another 442 in Book 2. The National Yearling Sales Series is New Zealand Bloodstock’s flagship event and has launched the careers of countless racetrack stars in recent years. In a season for the ages, Karaka graduates dominated the Group One races with a staggering haul across Australasia last season. Triple Group One winner Sharp ‘N’ Smart (NZ) (Redwood) won the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) in Sydney in the spring, followed by an elite summer double on home soil in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) and the New Zealand Derby (2400m). The $55,000 Book 2 purchase earned more than $3 million during his three-year-old season and was named New Zealand’s Horse of the Year. Sensational three-year-old fillies Legarto (NZ) (Proisir) and Prowess (NZ) (Proisir) each recorded Group One wins on both sides of the Tasman – Legarto in the New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) and the Australian Guineas (1600m), and Prowess in the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2050m) and the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m). The momentum of Karaka graduates and Kiwi horses has continued into the spring of 2023, with additional elite-level

successes for Ladies Man (NZ) (Zed) in the Livamol Classic (2040m), Atishu (NZ)(Savabeel) in the A$3m Champions Stakes (2000m), Molly Bloom (NZ) (Ace High) in the New Zealand 1000 Guineas and Desert Lightning (NZ) (Pride of Dubai) in the TAB Classic. The catalogues for Karaka 2024 are loaded with well-credentialed candidates to follow in some of those famous footsteps. The pedigree pages are saturated with black-type, featuring plenty of progeny of stakes-winning mares and dozens of siblings to top-class performers. There are siblings to Group One superstars such as Prowess, Lucia Valentina (NZ) (Savabeel), Te Akau Shark (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle), Turn Me Loose (NZ) (Iffraaj), Pennyweka (NZ) (Satono Aladdin), Affaire A Suivre (NZ) (Astern), Seabrook (NZ) (Hinchinbrook), Sierra Sue (NZ) (Darci Brahma), Ruthless Dame (NZ) (Tavistock) and Manzoice (Almanzor), along with exciting up-and-comers like Coeur Volante (NZ) (Proisir) and the stakes-winning unbeaten New Zealand two-year-old Velocious (Written Tycoon). The Book 1 catalogue also features the first foals out of Group One-performed mares Miss Sentimental (NZ) (Reliable Man), Rondinella (NZ) (Ocean Park), Evalina (I Am Invincible), Bargain (NZ) (Ocean Park) and Bavella (Snitzel). Over 100 sires are represented in the catalogues, from big names like Savabeel, Proisir, I Am Invincible, Justify, Almanzor, Per Incanto, Ocean Park and Snitzel to a big line up of first-season stallions with New Zealand-based Hello Youmzain, Circus Maximus, King Of Comedy, Banquo, Admire Mars and Ancient Spirit to debut. Coolmore Australia’s Tom Magnier confirms the status of the Sale as a

must-attend event. “You have to take this Sale seriously every year because there is always a champion that comes out. There’s nowhere in the world that looks after you like New Zealand, the hospitality is fantastic from every farm. Without a doubt, it is the best week on the sales calendar anywhere in the world,” stated Magnier. NZB’s Managing Director Andrew Seabrook is looking forward to the annual yearling harvest. “After the recordbreaking Sale last week, we are looking forward to seeing that momentum roll into Karaka 2024. The catalogues are the biggest numbers we’ve had in years and the quality of the pedigrees and types on offer easily matches it. We are buoyed by the demand for our Kiwi horses and our team will be busy in the coming months promoting the Sale and getting the best possible buying bench established.” The stage is set for a week-long thoroughbred extravaganza in Auckland, starting with an extraordinary TAB Karaka Millions race day at the new and improved Ellerslie Racecourse on Saturday 27 January. The six-race card now carries total stakes of $4.45m, headed by the $1m TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m), the $1.5m TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m) and the all-new open $1m Elsdon Park Aotearoa Classic (1600m) for four-year-olds. In a season for the ages, Karaka graduates dominated the Group One landscape with such class, resilience and range that commentators took the words right out of our mouths. From a staggering haul in the Spring to an audacious display at The Championships, waxing lyrical about tenacious New Zealand thoroughbreds has been all too easy. ew Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sales Series is internationally renowned as a rich source of racetrack talent, with graduates racking up over 600 black-type wins in the last five seasons alone. But even by Karaka’s own high standards, the last 18 months have been something very special. Since the beginning of the 2022-23 season, Karaka yearling graduates have recorded no fewer than 25 Group One wins. Three of those came from New Zealand’s reigning Horse of the Year, Sharp ‘N’ Smart (NZ) (Redwood).

Offered by breeders Westbury Stud in Book 2 of Karaka 2021, he was bought for $55,000 by Rogerson Bloodstock and has turned that into more than $3.1 million in prize-money. A winner at Listed level on home soil as a two-year-old before finishing fourth in the Group One JJ Atkins (1600m) in Brisbane, Sharp ‘N’ Smart went to a new level in 2022-23 and established himself as one of Australasia’s leading staying three-year-olds. He won the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick in October of last year, then backed up

into the Group One Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington a week later and ran second. He returned home for a late-summer Group One double at Te Rapa, defeating older horses in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) before landing the New Zealand Derby (2400m). His only other start that season came in the Group One Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick, where he finished fourth on an unsuitable heavy track. Other standouts in that season’s three-year-old crop included a pair of exceptional fillies, Prowess (NZ) (Proisir) and Legarto (NZ) (Proisir), who both recorded Group One 

of exceptional fillies, Prowess (NZ) (Proisir) and Legarto (NZ) (Proisir), who both recorded Group One victories on each side of the Tasman. Prowess became a marquee performer for Cambridge trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood, who secured her for $230,000 from Hallmark Stud’s Book 1 draft at Karaka 2021. Her 12-start career produced eight wins, three placings and more than $1.6 million in stakes. Group One placed in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) in the spring, Prowess strung together five consecutive stakes wins from January to March, including the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m), the Group One New Zealand Stakes (2050m) against older horses, and a runaway performance in the Group One Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) in Sydney. Legarto was a $90,000 purchase from Highline Thoroughbreds’ draft in Book 2 of Karaka 2021. Matamata couple Ken and Bev Kelso guided her through a near-flawless three-year-old campaign, in which her only defeat was a luckless fourth in the Karaka Million 3YO Classic. She won all of her other five races, including a fivelength demolition of her rivals in the Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) and an extraordinary late burst from nowhere to become the first New Zealand-trained winner of the Group One Australian Guineas (1600m). Legarto has won seven of her 10 starts overall, dwarfing her $90,000 purchase price with earnings in excess of $1.1 million. The big-race qualities of Roch ‘N’ Horse (NZ) (Per Incanto) were already known before last season, with the Little Avondale Stud homebred defying massive odds for a historic upset in the Group One Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in March of 2022. But she scaled even greater heights last November, beating an elite sprinting field under weight-forage conditions in the A$3 million Group One Darley Champions Sprint (1200m).

ROCH ‘N’ HORSE

Roch ‘N’ Horse was offered by Little Avondale in Book 2 of Karaka 2018, where she was unable to meet her $40,000 reserve. By the end of her racetrack career, the chestnut had won five races and banked more than A$3 million. Syndicators Go Racing have achieved one of their greatest success stories with Atishu (NZ) (Savabeel), who they recruited for $260,000 from Waikato Stud’s Book 1 draft at Karaka 2019. She has won nine of her 37 starts and more than $3.7 million in prize-money, which is more than 14 times her purchase price. A consistent big-race performer throughout her first couple of seasons with champion trainer Chris Waller, Atishu stepped up and claimed a deserved Group One breakthrough in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in April. There were even bigger and better things to come in the spring, finishing second in the Group

One Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) before going one better a week later with a brilliant finish in the A$3 million Group One Champions Stakes (2000m). Around the same time as those Atishu heroics in Melbourne, a talented threeyear-old emerged as a strong candidate to continue this Karaka roll. Molly Bloom (NZ) (Ace High) produced an enormous finish from a long way off the pace to win the Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton. That classic triumph came at career start number five for Molly Bloom, who has earned more than $309,000 in stakes. She was bought by trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott for $150,000 from the draft of Seaton Park at Karaka 2022, and she appears to have an enormously bright future. Karaka 2024 kicks off with the Book 1 session from January BB 28 to 30, followed by Book 2 from January 31 to February 2.

CHRIS RUTTEN BY KRISTEN MANNING

MOVER & SHAKER

I

t is an interesting and varied history of involvement with horses that has seen Chris Rutten earn great respect as one of New Zealand’s best horsemen; from breaking in horses as a teenager to show-jumping and three years on a movie set, he has done it all! And after years of buying high class horses, he is enjoying getting more involved in the bloodstock side. How did your involvement with horses begin? My father had a bit to do with horses but not in a major way as he was involved with his business. But

14

my sister showed interest in horses and went to a riding school and my brother and I tagged along one day. My brother’s horse reared and he said he would not be getting on a horse again! But I wanted to go again and from thereon I was on horses from dawn to dusk, going to pony club and competing; mainly show-jumping and I enjoyed the challenge of finding good horses. You started to break horses in when you were 15; how did that process come about? I did a few courses and learned from a few people but really it came down

to an affinity with horses. All the time I had spent with dressage and show-jumping horses helped and I was able to transfer that part of my education to the breaking. When I started using the sort of methods I learned from that time not many trainers really knew what it was all about but I found that the horses were enjoying it and it was good for them and for their future riders. And then the horses started to win! How did you go from that young enthusiastic lad to making breaking in a successful business?

18/12/2023 7:29 pm

I was breaking in horses for a client John Norwood whose family had raced some great horses including the Melbourne Cup winner Silver Night. He has gone on to become a friend and a great partner and he suggested that I should find some land and set up my own breaking, pre-training and agistment farm. I started out with a few clients and it just got busier and busier I have not had a quiet moment since! We’ve had thousands of horses pass through here at Cavallo Farm (run with my wife Donna in the lower north island at Te Horo) in the 35 or so years since we set up. We have scaled back on the breaking in part of the business and are focusing more on bloodstock work now, something I really enjoy. What do you like to see in a horse? When you have spent years watching them, riding them, working with them, lunging them, you get to know a lot about what to look for; you can pick up a lot from their movement and their strength. I prefer inspecting horses by myself, I don’t like having anyone in my ear putting me off! I really love looking at horses and still get a bit excited when I see one I love, though I try to contain that a bit! You have had terrific success in one particular feature race... I was watching the Karaka Million meeting on television one night and thought it would be a terrific one to be involved with. Since then I’ve had a lot of runners in the two year-old race with a couple of wins and five placings. Vespa

and Yourdeel both earned the titles of NZ Champion 2Y0 whilst Scott Base won the three year-old race in 2018. I was only buying one horse a year at the time so to have them win Group races was exciting and satisfying. And those horses have helped set me up in my career as a bloodstock agent as people have trust in me in regards to my ability to find a nice horse. You spent three years away from your business, tell us about that... I was approached to be the horse wrangler for the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Initially my job was to source riders and then to train the horses and teach the actors how to ride. We did that here on the farm and it was an amazing experience. I had to change a few things, invent a few things in order to train horses for something so different. The actors came out and we had them riding through the dunes and on the beach which they really enjoyed and my kids were pretty amazed to see such well known actors here on our doorstep! We also got to spend a bit of time on set and the kids ended up being background actors. It was amazing to see how a movie is made and I watch movies differently now, knowing how much goes on in the background. We had a great team involved, made lots of friends and I am so glad I did it. The whole thing was great for New Zealand. You have been rewarded for your achievements by receiving the John A Higgs Award, how did that feel? It was not expected and I was honoured.

It was not expected and I was honoured. A lot of my clients have won the same award and it was a lovely recognition of everything that Donna and I have worked for over the years. It has also been great to have been appointed Vice President of the New Zealand Bloodstock Federation this year.

A lot of my clients have won the same award and it was a lovely recognition of everything that Donna and I have worked for over the years. It has also been great to have been appointed Vice President of the New Zealand Bloodstock Federation this year. Is your family also involved with horses? My daughter has done some show riding but I didn’t push her into horses, I let her forge her own career and she has set up her own graphic design business and is doing really well. The grandkids have already been on horses and will probably have their own ponies soon. What do you do outside of racing? I do not get a lot of time out but I like my fishing and going motor bike riding with friends and having adventures. What does your future hold? Really concentrating on the bloodstock work whilst my wife and staff keep things going on the agistment side of the business. I really enjoy the challenge of buying good horses and I have a few clients in New Zealand and Australia. I’ve been getting over to the stud parades; it is good to see the stallions and have in my mind what they are like when looking at their progeny later on. I like to see traits coming through the various breeds. Some are not always the good ones but you work around them, it is all about pushing the right buttons. Some horses are tougher than others but calmness and patience should get them all to the right level. I wouldn’t buy a horse I would not be happy to race myself, I have to be satisfied with their conformation, their movement, their balance. I attend all the New Zealand sales and overseas ones by request. I have never bought big numbers of horses but they all seem to be winning, including Raf Attack (winner of the Gloaming Stakes-Gr3, 1800m) who I purchased with Waterhouse & Bott Racing at Karaka in 2022. Advice to someone wanting to break into the industry? You know it will be hard work, that you have to apply yourself. Listen and learn from others in the industry, calmly do your job and learn that patience is a big thing! BB

ARDROSSAN A

rdrossan (Redoute’s Choice) is a simple case of “you can’t argue with results.” With his first crop, Ardrossan sired three individual stakes winners, and to put that into perspective, New Zealand only has seventeen stakes races for two year-olds in their annual calendar. In 2022/23, those seventeen races were won by fifteen horses, meaning that Ardrossan was responsible for 20% of juvenile stakes race winners in NZ in 2022/23. However you cut it, that is a staggering beginning to Ardrossan’s stud career. “Ardrossan has started his stud career in mighty fashion producing three stakes winning two year-olds from just 44 in his first crop,” said Mike Rennie, General Manager at Waikato Stud. “The word got out prior to the end of his fourth season at stud and his book jumped

16

to 110 after averaging 67. The momentum has continued into his fifth season at stud with his book closing in a matter of weeks from when he was announced at the increased fee of $10,000 plus gst. Perhaps most encouragingly, he has attractive strong interest from the Australian market. Momentum is heading in the right direction for him and we have some pretty exciting yearlings to offer in 2024.” Despite the backing of a major farm like Waikato Stud, Ardrossan had relatively modest support when retired. Announced with an initial fee of NZ$8,000, Ardrossan had just 44 foals in his first crop. It’s not understating it to say that his success is a surprise to many, and a delight to the owners of those 44 foals! His first foals must have looked sensational, as he had 58 foals in his second crop, but suffered the typical

drop off with his third crop, having only 39 foals who have just become yearlings. Breeders who stuck with him should benefit if they choose to sell their current yearlings. Was his initial lack of popularity as simple as Ardrossan being a group winning son of Redoute’s Choice? The market is saturated with these horses, making it hard to stand out, with over thirty active sons of Redoute’s Choice at stud in 2023 across Australia and New Zealand. Or was it because he had an interrupted racing career? We’ll never know why breeders didn’t rush to use him and it doesn’t matter now as Ardrossan has proven his ability from limited opportunities. Astute breeders know that sons of Redoute’s Choice don’t need to be Gr1 winners to be wonderful stallions. Sire of 81 stakes winners Not a Single Doubt was a Listed winner, ill-fated Beneteau was a Gr3 winner (Gr1 placed) who sired ten stakes winners. The trick, as with anything to do with horses, is picking which son of Redoute’s Choice to back! Conceived in a year when Redoute’s Choice stood for $137,500, Ardrossan was offered by Arrowfield Stud at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. He was purchased for $150,000 by bloodstock agent Bruce Perry who described him as “a beautifully balanced and athletic individual; a very good mover with good bone and exuding quality and presence.” Waikato Stud joined the ownership group in Ardrossan, and he was sent to trainer Stephen Marsh. Ardrossan won his first two starts as a two year-old in New Zealand; the first one over 800m and the second being a Listed race over

1100m. On the strength of that performance, Ardrossan was sent to Australia but had some issues meaning he was away from the races for eight months before he had one start as a three year-old. The same issues arose, and he had another long spell before winning a trial as an early four-year-old, then two more races in Australia where he showed the same problem. Sent home to recover, Ardrossan returned to the races in New Zealand as a January four-year-old and won first up. Chittick credited his vet with helping Ardrossan return to form, saying, “He had his mishaps in Australia which affected his career. He came back with a few heart problems. Chris 

Phillips, our vet, has done a wonderful job with him and, although it is early days yet, he looks like he is going to get back to his best.” Ardrossan won again in the Gr3 Concorde Stakes to make it two in succession and keep his unbeaten record in New Zealand. “We think he is really high class,” trainer Stephen Marsh told the NZ Herald after the Concorde win. “He was up against it today, but he travelled beautifully and won well. I think his potential is pretty much untapped. He is the coolest horse and I’m just rapt the team have given me another chance with him. Waikato Stud have done a super job with him as they have got him right from a couple of little problems. It is a big team effort and I’m proud of them.” Next up, Ardrossan was given a tougher target, and he ran a strong race to finish third in the Gr1 Waikato Sprint with two multiple Gr1 winners ahead of him; Melody Belle (14 Gr1 wins including the Gr1 Empire Rose Stakes) and The Bostonian (three Gr1 wins in Australia). Ardrossan was in front with 50 metres to go, with Melody Belle flying up the inside, while Ardrossan fought hard with The Bostonian. At the finish, Melody Belle was a neck in front with only a half-head separating The Bostonian and Ardrossan. To be so close to two multiple Gr1 winners was a real demonstration of Ardrossan’s class and ability to keep fighting under pressure. Sent back to Australia, Ardrossan ran third in the Gr3 Star Kingdom Stakes but unfortunately suffered an injury which led to his retirement. The winner of four of his nine starts, including two Gr1 placings, Ardrossan showed he had Gr1 ability during an interrupted career. Waikato Stud saw his stud potential and introduced him in 2019 at a fee of NZ$8,000. And they didn’t have to wait long before they saw the results of their gamble on Ardrossan with his first winner coming in January 2023 when Codigo (Ardrossan-Sophia Magia, by Per Incanto) won on debut. Codigo backed that performance up with victory in the Listed Wellesley Stakes before heading to Australia where he ran third in a Melbourne two year-old city race. At three, he ran fourth first up in a Listed race. Codigo is the first foal of his dam who won on debut at two, then had 26 more starts without winning, although she placed on seven occasions. Codigo wasn’t offered as a yearling, and he is the first stakes winner in five generations of his pedigree page, so Ardrossan has certainly been an upgrade to this family. Codigo is linebred 4mx4m to Last Tycoon, via Iglesia and his second damsire, as his dam Sophia Magia is out of a Towkay (Last Tycoon) mare.

Loch Katrine (Ardrossan-Cong’er, by Zenno Rob Roy) debuted in March 2023, placing in her first two starts before winning the Listed Champagne Stakes in April at just her third raceday start. A $6,000 yearling, Loch Katrine is the fifth foal and second winner for her dam, who was a Listed winner of five races and is a half-sister to Gr3 winner Bahira. Loch Katrine is a five generation outcross with no linebreeding. Saltcoats (Ardrossan-Savanite, by Savabeel) debuted in April 2023, running second, then placed in the Listed Waikato Equine Vet Stakes before winning the Listed Auckland Futurity Stakes at her third start in May 2023. Transferred to Chris Waller, Saltcoats recently ran third in Sydney at her second start at three. Not offered as a yearling, Saltcoats is the fifth foal and second winner for her dam who was a maiden winner from only four starts and her dam is a half-sister to Gr2 winner

At the time of writing, Ardrossan’s first crop have just turned three, and Rezeki (Ardrossan-O’Misty, by O’Reilly) shows plenty of promise having placed in the Listed El Roca Spring Trophy at his second start behind Karaka Millions winner Tokyo Tycoon, and has three placings from four starts (as at midNov). A $160,000 yearling, Rezeki is the second foal of his unraced dam, who is a half-sister to Gr2 winner Aotea Lad. Rezeki is linebred 4mx3m to Last Tycoon, via O’Reilly and Iglesia. Ardrossan adds to the record of Redoute’s Choice as a sire of sires. Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) won four Gr1 races and was the Champion 3YO of 1999/00. He went on to win three Champion Sire of Australia titles, was twice the

Leading Sire of 2YOs in Australia, and to date has four Champion Broodmare Sire titles. But it is as a sire of sires that Redoute’s Choice has made his name. Gr1 winning son Snitzel surpassed Redoute’s Choice when he won his fourth Australian Champion Sire title. Redoute’s Choice has 182 stakes winners, with his last crop now four-year-olds, while Snitzel is sitting on 137 but is still serving mares, so has time to close the gap on his sire. Redoute’s Choice’s other sons who have ten or more stakes winners are: Not a Single Doubt (81), Stratum (47), Nadeem (21), Rafeef (13), Fast ‘n’ Famous (11), Bradbury’s Luck (11), Burgundy (10), and Beneteau (10). Ardrossan’s dam, Miss Argyle (IglesiaPrecious Pearl, by Semipalatinsk), has been remarkable at stud with four stakes winners; triple Gr1 winner Incentivise (Shamus Award), Gr3 winner and Gr1 placed Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice), dual Listed winner of ten races Bergerac (Drumbeats), and Listed winner Cheyenne Warrior (Not a Single Doubt). Incredibly, nine of her ten foals made it to the races, and all nine of them are winners. A non-winner, Miss Argyle showed plenty of ability early when she ran second on debut in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes as an October two year-old, beaten only by Hurried Choice who went on to win two Gr2 races and was Gr1 placed. Miss Argyle’s only other start was in the Gr2 Sweet Embrace Stakes but she failed to trouble the judges. Several trial wins as an early three year-old probably had her connections hopeful of more, but she was retired to stud without racing again. Miss Argyle is a full sister to Diamondsontheinside (Iglesia) who won fifteen races, four of those as a two year-old including the Listed Doomben Slipper. This is a family that has crossed very well with Queensland based sire

Spirit of Boom with Gr2 winner Prince of Boom, and Listed winners Keisha Boom, Heaven’s Deal, and Simply Fly, all descending from Ardrossan’s second dam winning mare Precious Pearl. Ardrossan’s damsire Iglesia (Last Tycoon) is best known for his Champion Sire son Written Tycoon, and as a damsire, Iglesia has left ten stakes winners, although four of them are Ardrossan and his siblings! Three stakes winners out of Iglesia mares are by Not a Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice), including Ardrossan’s halfbrother Cheyenne Warrior, while other stallions represented are Incentivise’s sire Shamus Award, Danehill Dancer, Spirit of Boom, High Chaparral, Sebring and Drumbeats (Redoute’s Choice). Iglesia mares have done well when sent to Danehill line stallions, but that isn’t of much use to breeders wanting to use Ardrossan as he is one of those examples. Shamus Award is a grandson of High Chapparal via So You Think, while Sebring (More Than Ready) is a Halo line horse like Zenno Rob Roy (Sunday Silence), the damsire of Ardrossan’s stakes winner Loch Katrine. Spirit of Boom (Sequalo) mares would be interesting with Ardrossan, as that would bring in a line of Semipalatinsk who is Spirit of Boom’s second damsire, and Danehill via Spirit of Boom’s damsire Special Dane. Ardrossan is likely to get many Savabeel and O’Reilly mares given they both stood at Waikato Stud too, and since he’s already produced stakes horses on those crosses, it would be logical to expect more. Ardrossan has made the most of his limited opportunities with his first crop, and now the book full sign has gone up for 2023, he’s about to get bigger and better chances to improve on his already impressive record into the future. PENCARROW STUD a SPECTACULAR source RACETRACK SUCCESS

T

hroughout the more than three decades since Sir Peter Vela founded Pencarrow Stud in partnership with his late brother Philip, the stud’s name and its recognisable ‘V in a box’ brand have become renowned as an outstanding nursery of thoroughbred talent. The breeders of 20 individual Group One winners, the Velas boast an extraordinary record across multiple generations of their blue-blooded thoroughbred families. The brothers were named New Zealand Breeders of the Year in 2000 and 2002. The most recent addition to that Group One list is Dunkel (NZ) (Dundeel), who was offered as part of Pencarrow Stud’s Book 1 draft at Karaka 2021. He was bought for $40,000 and has turned that into almost A$700,000 in prizemoney, with six wins from nine career starts headed by the Group One South Australian Derby (2500m) in May.

20

That continued a proud tradition of success in coveted three-yearold classic races for Pencarrow graduates, who have also won: • Group One New Zealand Derby (2400m) – Cavallieri (NZ) (Gaius), who was sold at Karaka in 1990. • Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m) – Vapour Trail (NZ) (Jetball), who was New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year in 2002. • Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) – the Riccarton classic holds a special race in Pencarrow’s history, with victories by Noble Heights (NZ) (Sir Tristram), Clear Rose (NZ) (Deputy Governor) and Insouciant (NZ) (Keeper). • Group One New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) – Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill), who was sold through Pencarrow’s Karaka yearling draft in 2004, scored a spectacular win in the Riccarton classic in 2005. A decade later,

the 2000 Guineas was won in similarly emphatic fashion by Turn Me Loose (NZ) (Iffraaj), who was bred by Mana Park’s George and Maryanne Simon with their leased Pencarrow mare Indomitable (NZ) (Danehill). Pencarrow will offer a half-brother to Turn Me Loose as Lot 139 in their Karaka 2024 draft. • Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m) – the prestigious fillies’ classic at Caulfield was won by Riverina Charm (NZ) (Sir Tristram), an outstanding racehorse who won a total of four Group One races including three in Australia. • Group One Rosehill Guineas (2000m) – this Sydney classic also features on Riverina Charm’s CV, while another Pencarrow graduate to win the Rosehill Guineas was De Beers (NZ) (Quest for Fame), who was sold at Karaka in 2004. • Group One Australasian Oaks (2000m) – the Adelaide showpiece delivered Group One glory for Grand Echezeaux

(NZ) (Zabeel), who went on to become a wonderful member of Pencarrow’s broodmare band with four black-type performers among her five winning foals. • Group One South Australian Oaks (2400m) – Marmalitre (NZ) (Wolverton) won the Adelaide feature in 1987. • Group One South African Fillies’ Guineas (1600m) & Group One Cape Fillies’ Guineas (1600m) – both won in the 2000-01 season by the exceptional Hoeberg (NZ) (Maroof ). She was a $350,000 purchase at Karaka in 1999. These results are proof of the Velas’ strength in their select broodmare band of richly bred mares in the fertile paddocks of Pencarrow Stud. Their greatest success story is undoubtedly the immortal Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm), whose legacy is enshrined with a statue at Pencarrow Stud. Born at Pencarrow in the spring of 1997, Ethereal soared to international fame four years later with superb victories in the Group One Caufield Cup (2400m) and Melbourne Cup (3200m). She was the 11th horse to complete that legendary double in the same season. Overall, Ethereal won four Group One races among her total of eight wins, amassing more than $5 million in prize-money. She was Champion Stayer in Australia and New Zealand in the 2001-02 season. Pencarrow has also bred and raised many other top flight performers of the last couple of decades, such as Eleonora

(NZ) (Makfi), Silver Eclipse (NZ) (Darci Brahma), Dolmabache (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice), Our Ella Belle (NZ) (Encosta De Lago), Darci’s Dream (NZ) (Darci Brahma), Rhythm to Spare (NZ) (Pins), Wildflower (NZ) (Keeper), Te Akau Coup (NZ) (Thorn Park), Rasa Lila (NZ) (Darci Brahma), Supera (NZ) (Savabeel) and Pearl Of Alsace (NZ) (Tavisock). A recent addition to that list is Pearl Of Alsace’s half-sister Zourion (NZ) (Zoustar), who was offered in the Pencarrow draft in Book 1 of Karaka 2022 and was bought by Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis for $475,000. She was a Group Two winner as a two-yearold in last season’s Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (1200m), and she placed in the Group Two Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) in Melbourne. She is becoming a valuable prospect for Cambridge Stud owners Brendan and Jo Lindsay. Pencarrow’s proven track record has generated hot demand in the sale ring, with more than half a dozen yearlings reaching the $1 million mark. That group includes the 2004 sale-topper Darci Brahma, who put Pencarrow’s name in lights in the sale ring, on the racetrack and at stud. By Danehill out of Group Onewinning Pencarrow homebred Grand Echezeaux, Darci Brahma was bought by Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis for $1.1 million. Darci Brahma won 10 of his 19 starts and more than $1.2 million, including Group One victories in Brisbane’s TJ Smith

Classic (1600m) and the New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m), Otaki-Maori WFA (1600m), Telegraph Handicap (1200m) and Waikato Sprint (1200m). He placed in another five Group One races including the Australian Guineas (1600m), and was named New Zealand’s Champion 2YO and Champion 3YO. Darci Brahma and his fellow saletopping sibling Burgundy (NZ) both followed up their multiple stakes successes on the racetrack by making a real impact at stud. Other elite Pencarrow graduates include the multiple Group One winner Star Dancer (Star Watch), electrifying sprinter Guiseppina (NZ) (Johar), Sydney Group One winners Allez Suez (Canny Lad) and Linesman (NZ) (Touching Wood) and Group Onewinning Tethys (NZ) (Kings Island). Romanee Conti (NZ) (Sir Tristram) might be best remembered as the dam of Ethereal, but she was a high-quality racehorse in her own right, winning five Group and Listed races including Sydney’s Group Three Queen of the Turf Stakes (1500m), which is now a Group One race, along with flying the New Zealand flag on the world stage with a victory in the Hong Kong Cup (1800m). Pencarrow Stud will offer another high-quality draft of 24 yearlings during Book 1 of Karaka 2024, which runs from Sunday January 28 to Tuesday January 30.

ood looking Listed winner Banquo might just be a smoky at the sales. He was a $600,000 yearling himself, thanks to a stellar pedigree and his stunning athletic type. “Banquo has thrown a very consistent line of stock,” Waikato Stud’s General Manager Mike Rennie. “They have good natural strength, quality and good conformation. He’s proving dominant with the type he is leaving from a variety of mares. He is going to serve his biggest book in his third season which is a testament to the type he is producing.” Banquo debuted in a Listed race as a two year-old, proving that his trainer thought he had plenty of ability, but it wasn’t until the spring of his three year-old season that he won his maiden. He immediately backed this up with a Listed win over 1400m at Flemington, then ran fourth in the Gr2 Sandown Guineas over a mile.

CIRCUS MAXIMUS A

champion miler and triple Gr.1 winner, Circus Maximus fits the profile for stallions who have succeeded in New Zealand including such as Champion Sire and Gr.1 winning miler Zabeel. The Galileo colt is the only foal of Royal Ascot Group winner Duntle, and he lived up to those lofty expectations quickly, winning as a two-year-old as well as being a Gr.1 performer at that age. At three, he showed his true talents, winning the renowned

W

inner of the same Gr1 sprint as the immortal Danehill, as well as the Gr1 Diamond Jubilee, aka the race all Australians like to brag about, Hello Youmzain has huge commercial appeal. Hello Youmzain was a brilliant juvenile, winning two of his three starts including the Gr2 Critérium de Maisons-Laffitte. At three, he won the Gr1 Haydock Sprint Cup, a race famous in this part of the world for being won by Danehill. Royal Applause, Invincible Spirit, and the promising Harry Angel, also won this race. “I was really taken by the Hello Youmzain yearlings I saw at Arqana,” said bloodstock agent Damon Gabbedy. “They all walk the house down and seem to have great attitudes. You can really see the Danehill in them and they look ideal for our Australian and New Zealand racing conditions.” Back at four, Hello Youmzain continued to show his speed in winning Royal Ascot’s Gr1 Golden Jubilee, before placing in the Gr1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. With five wins, two at Gr1 level,

sire-producing race, the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot together with the Gr.1 Prix du Moulin du Longchamp, both over a mile, as well as placing in the Gr.1 Sussex Stakes and travelling to America to run fourth in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Mile against the older horses. Circus Maximus was awarded the Champion 3YO Miler in France at the completion of his three-year-old season. Back at four, Circus Maximus retained his form, winning the Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot over a mile and placing in four other Gr.1 mile events. This ability to train on and be consistent in Gr.1 company is highly sought after in the current climate where stallions like Lonhro, Spirit of Boom, and So You Think have all proven mental and physical soundness and that longevity matters. Galileo barely needs an introduction such is his dominance in the stallion sphere. Sire of 373 stakes winners and a world record 99 individual Gr.1 winners, his

sire sons include the incredible Frankel (133 stakes winners), Teofilo (111), New Approach (60), etc. Gallopers of the quality of Roman Emperor (out of a Fastnet Rock mare who is out of a Zabeel mare) highlight how well Galileo has crossed with the local broodmare population. Interestingly both Frankel and Teofilo, his two most successful sons to date at stud carry a similar Galileo/Danehill cross to Circus Maximus, which gives breeders and buyers many clues as to what is likely to work. Duntle, the dam of Circus Maximus, was an outstanding racemare, winning five races, all at a mile, led by the Royal Ascot Gr.2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes, and placing three times in Gr.1 company. In the Gr.1 Matron Stakes, she was first past the post but relegated to second by the stewards and like her son, was a dual stakes winner over a mile at Royal Ascot. A daughter of champion sire and broodmare sire Danehill Dancer, Duntle comes from an excellent branch of the famous La Troienne family that includes Australian Gr.1 winning 2YO Artorius and the famed New Zealand sire success Noble Bijou. Circus Maximus has 110 foals in his first crop of yearlings.

HELLO YOUMZAIN Hello Youmzain was a sound fast horse who competed against the best sprinters in Europe. Hello Youmzain’s sire Kodiac is a rags to riches story; retiring to stud in 2007 as a stakes placed winning son of Danehill. He built success and now has 92 stakes winners from sprinters like Hello Youmzain, Champion 2YOs like Campenelle and Tiggy Wiggy, through to Gr1 Caulfield Cup winner Best Solution. Spasha, the unraced dam of Hello Youmzain, has been a superior broodmare. As well as the dual Gr1 winner, she has left Italian Champion 2YO Colt and German Champion 3YO Colt, Royal Youmzain (Youmzain), Listed winner Zuhoor Baynoona (Elnadim), and two stakes placed winners, which is five stakes horses from eight foals. She is a half-sister to Listed winner Persian Majesty, and this is the family of Australian group

winners Shania Dane, Northwest Passage, and Scintillation. With 96 foals in his first crop of yearlings, Hello Youmzain has plenty of options to emulate his sire’s success. Hello Youmzain is well represented with 45 yearlings in book one and eight more in book two.

three year-olds, just like King Of Comedy did.” King of Comedy quickly showed his ability with a win and a second from two starts as a two yearold. At three, King of Comedy flashed home down the outside in the stallion making Gr1 St James Palace Stakes over a mile to miss the win by a head to Circus Maximus and beating Too Darn Hot. Timeform rated King of Comedy the best three year-old in Europe after that performance. King of Comedy was a Listed winner over a mile in his three year-old season, and as well as that impressive Gr1 second, he was also second in the Gr2 Joel Stakes and fourth in the Gr1 Juddmonte International Stakes. Back at four, he placed at group level. Kingman has not been at stud for long, retiring in 2015, and he’s already clocked up 72 stakes winners, including Gr1 winners Palace Pier, Persian King, Domestic Spending, Kinross, Schnell Meister, Sauterne, Commissioning, Feed the Flame, and Australia’s Gr1 JJ Atkins Plate winner King Colorado. Kingman has several sons at stud from his first few crops such as Calyx whose oldest crop are two year-olds and he has two European group winners already.

F

rom the first crop of four-time Gr1 winner and Horse of the Year Kingman, King of Comedy was a competitive miler in Europe.

“Novara Park are very excited about King Of Comedy’s first yearlings,” said Luigi Muollo. “King Of Comedy has the looks, pedigree and racetrack performance to be a hit at stud. He could be a real game changer. He has stamped his yearlings with balance, quality, and strength. Most of the yearlings I have seen look like they will be on their game as late two year-olds then ready to race at the highest level over a mile as

King of Comedy has two yearlings in Book One and sixteen in Book Two.

PERSONALITY PROFILE

NICK JOHNSON

fter 10 years in the United Kingdom, Nick Johnson returned to New Zealand to become the CEO of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (NZTBA) “It is a tremendous honour to have been chosen to head up the Association, one with such a rich history dating back to its formation in 1948,” Johnson who took up the CEO role in October told Bluebloods. “Equally, the opportunity to advocate for and represent the wider New Zealand Breeding Industry on a variety of different issues carries with it a big responsibility, but it is something I am really looking forward to.” “The success of the New Zealand bred product is quite remarkable and is something we should shout about and be incredibly proud of. One of many examples of this is borne out in the statistic that in the 2022/23 season, New Zealand bred horses won 28% of all Australian Group One Races despite only making up 8% of the racing population. The raw evidence of this clearly on show at the recent Melbourne Cup Carnival where the NZ suffix was to the fore in black-type events.” Statistics is something that has interested Johnson from a young age, and consequently through his grandfather’s mixed fortunes in punting led him to an interest in racing. “My Grandad Ron enjoyed a punt, but he was certainly no mathematician,” he recalled. “From a very young age, I’d work out how much he’d won (or invariably lost) based on the odds. This did two things: it made me halfway decent at mental arithmetic, but most importantly it made me incredibly interested in the statistics and bloodlines that went behind the sport. “I was captivated by it really; it is a sport that lends itself to a lot of statistics and that interested me to the point

of obsession! I just loved the thrill of seeing horses thunder down the straight, knowing behind all of this was such a fascinating web of pedigree. “My three favourite things growing up in Wellington were race caller Tony Lee, Trentham Racecourse and Sunline!” On leaving school Johnson embarked on a career in sales and management in the Construction and Automotive industries. In his mid-twenties he and his partner Hannah made the decision to relocate to the United Kingdom. However, what was meant to be a two-year excursion quickly turned into 10, and before taking up the role with the NZTBA Johnson held a Senior Management role with a large flooring manufacturer. While in the United Kingdom he always kept in touch with what was happening in the thoroughbred industry in the Southern Hemisphere. In that time his brother Dylan also became involved in the industry and is now a bloodstock agent based in Cambridge. Johnson often acted as a sounding board for his brother and helped where he could behind the scenes spending many hours in the middle of the night following racing in New Zealand and Australia.

“In my younger days, I made the conscious decision to build a career away from the thoroughbred industry to build up wider commercial experience,” he explained. “It was always my intention to become one day employed in the industry and hopefully put those things I’ve learnt in the business world to good use in something I’m passionate about. “I’m lucky to have stepped into this role with an association that has a very solid base and a Council made up of a diverse range of incredibly experienced people. I look forward to working to make a difference in the industry I enjoy so much.” “By its very nature, our association’s purpose is to represent and advocate for our members and the entire industry. Our members are our lifeblood, and my keen focus will be on ensuring they are getting real benefit from their membership by continuing to represent them and providing informational content exclusive to them.” “The core of what we do is about breeding racehorses, and we have already set in motion ways in which to encourage more people into breeding. In my short time in the role, I have been struck by the dedication, passion

and professionalism shown by everyone involved. When you take a drive through our countryside and visit the farms, it’s not hard to see why we are so successful. “With a 29% lift in stakes money in New Zealand courtesy of the Entain-TAB partnership, a new world-class Strathayr surface at Ellerslie and our continued success internationally, there has never been a better time to be involved.” With any primary industry there are issues such as water quality and the environment as well as taxation to be dealt with and these are driven in large part by government legislation. Johnson aims is to be at the forefront with policy makers, ensuring the NZTBA’s voice is heard and outcomes which benefit the industry are achieved. The association will continue to work with fellow key stakeholders to ensure the welfare of both humans and equines, demonstrating how the industry takes care of its horses and people. As well it will continue to promote the career pathways in place with the Level 3 and 4 Breeding Course and the Irish National Stud Scholarship and Sunline International Management Scholarship. BB

THE BEST IS STILL AHEAD

SWEYNESSE

N

ew Zealand’s Sweynesse (Lonhro-Swansea, by Singspiel) is no one hit wonder. Yes, he has the absolutely brilliant triple Gr1 winner Lucky Sweynesse (Sweynesse-Madonna Mia, by Red Clubs) in Hong Kong as a headline act, and the sheer volume of press dedicated to Lucky Sweynesse might ‘sway’ the public into thinking along those lines. “Sweynesse’s progeny continue to go to the next level,” said Novara Park’s Luigi Muollo. “Last season Sweynesse was the leading New Zealand Sire on Earnings in Hong Kong. He was also the leading New Zealand Sire in Hong Kong on Winners to Runners there with an outstanding 75%. To have the New Zealand Horse Of The Year Lucky Sweynesse rated as the best Sprinter in the World shows Sweynesse can deliver top class. Champion Sire Lonhro has been retired from stud duties and great to see that he has become a proven Sire of Sires. Sweynesse has served his best book

32

of quality mares this season so certainly has his best ahead of him.” Sweynesse retired to Novara Park in 2016 and with his oldest foals now six-year-olds, he has six stakes winners from 140 runners (4%). His superstar is obviously triple Gr1 winning sprinter Lucky Sweynesse who has won 13 of his 18 starts in Hong Kong and has earnings over HK$51million. He was named the Hong Kong Champion Sprinter and Champion 4YO in 2022/23. Sweynesse’s other stakes winners are Gr2 The Roses winner Only Words, Gr2 Westbury Classic winner Dragon Queen, Gr3 Rough Habit Plate winner Special Swey, Gr3 Taranaki 2YO Classic winner Bonita Aurelia, and Listed winner Brix. Sweynesse was trained by John O’Shea for the Godolphin team, and he won his only start as a two yearold. Back at three, Sweynesse won his first three starts in succession, including a city race where he beat future Gr1 winners First Seal and Hampton Court, then the Gr3

Newcastle Spring Stakes and Gr3 Gloaming Stakes. Hampton Court and First Seal reversed the placings from three starts prior in the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes with Sweynesse in third, and so much was thought of him that he fronted up for the Gr1 WS Cox Plate as a three year-old, running mid-field. Back in the autumn, he ran second twice to Hallowed Crown, first in the Gr2 Hobartville Stakes, then in the Gr1 Randwick Guineas before finishing fourth in the Gr1 Rosehill Guineas. He had four more starts after that, but his four-year-career wasn’t at the heights of his competitive three year-old season. Retired to New Zealand’s Novara Park, Sweynesse now had to show his prowess through his progeny and he’s certainly done that. His first stakes winner, Bonita Aurelia, came quickly, in February of his first crop of two yearolds, when she won the Gr3 Taranaki 2YO Classic at her second start. She backed this up with a third placing in the Gr2 Matamata Breeders’ Stakes, before training on to be a winner at three as well. Now at stud, her first foal is a 2023 colt by Hellbent. From Sweynesse’s first crop came two other stakes winners; Gr2 winners Only Words and Dragon Queen. Only Words placed at two, then came out at three and won her first two starts in succession including the Listed Wanganui Guineas. Sent to Australia after that, she won in Sydney before heading to the Queensland carnival where she won the Gr2 The Roses and placed in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet. Dragon Queen placed in her first three starts at two before breaking her maiden as an early three year-old. At four, she won the Gr2 Westbury Classic and ran fourth in the Gr1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes behind the brilliant Imperatriz. Sweynesse’s first crop had a hint of what was to come with Gr1 placed winner Signora Nera (Sweynesse-Madonna Mia, by Red Clubs). Third in the Gr1 Queensland Oaks behind Duais, Signora Nera is the year older full sister to Lucky Sweynesse. From the same crop as Lucky Sweynesse comes Listed two year-old winner Brix, while Sweynesse’s current four-year-olds include Gr3 Rough Habit Plate winner Special Swey who ran second in the Port Macquarie Cup in October 2023 as an early four-year-old. It is early days for Sweynesse’s current crops of two and three year-olds, as this was written in the early spring, and these are two of his smallest crops, conceived before Lucky Sweynesse won in Hong Kong. With much bigger crops coming through with his yearlings and current foals, the future looks very bright for Sweynesse to take on the mantle as a successful sire son for Lonhro. BB

H

ello Youmzain delivered a dream result on the track for Cambridge Stud and the Waikato farm is now looking forward to a milestone event in the second stage of the former high-class European sprinter’s career. His first Southern Hemisphere representatives will go through the ring at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale and market feedback has further fuelled expectations. With French nursery Haras d’Etreham, Cambridge Stud purchased Hello Youmzain in his racing prime in 2019 after he had won the Haydock Sprint Cup-Gr1 and kept him in work as a four-yearold with Yorkshire trainer Kevin Ryan. It proved a masterstroke with Hello Youmzain returning for Royal Ascot glory with victory in

34

the Diamond Jubilee Stakes-Gr1. Prospective buyers of Hello Youmzain’s youngsters will be spoiled for choice at Karaka. “We’re pretty excited heading into the Sale,” Cambridge Stud General Manager Marc Devcich said. “The feedback has been great and obviously the NZB agents have also been very positive so it all augurs well.” The Stud has been delighted to see Hello Youmzain, whose northern base is at Haras d’Etreham, stamp their draft with the qualities that made him such a stand-out performer. “He has thrown a lot of his own attributes into his stock, they are very well-muscled and good movers with great hind quarters. He leaves strong and forward types,” Devcich said.

While Hello Youmzain was a short-course specialist of the highest order, Devcich believes his progeny will prove to be versatile. “He was such a precocious horse, but physically he’s got a huge constitution and typical of an Australian stallion,” he said. “He’s very robust and strong and I can see he will get early types and those that get over ground later, you’re going to get a bit of variety with this stallion.” While thrilled with the progress of all the yearlings in the draft, Devcich mentioned a couple of stand-out Hello Youmzain yearlings. “Lot 352 is a quality filly out of a Pierro mare called River Mist, she’s very attractive and a lovely, athletic colt, Lot 438, out of the Pivotal mare Steer The Stars. She has already left a stakes winner called Never Back Down, who is by Kodiac as is Hello Youmzain.” Proven stallions represented in the draft include the farm’s own Group One producer Almanzor along with Savabeel, Lonhro, Wootton Bassett, Toronado, Ocean Park, Street Boss and Capitalist. “We are fortunate at Cambridge Stud that we have the resources to spread our mares among the leading stallions in the Southern Hemisphere,” Devcich said. “We’ve got a very consistent draft with commercial young sires represented like Yes Yes Yes, King’s Legacy, Farnan, Brutal, Earthlight and our own Embellish, who is on an upward spiral.” Entrusted with the preparation of the draft is Yearling Manager Chelsea McLeod and Bluebloods spoke with her about the behind-the-scenes work involved in the lead-up. How have the first crop of Hello Youmzain prepared and your impressions of their attributes? “They seem to thrive having a job and routine which makes a yearling prep the perfect environment for them to succeed. Physically, they have a lot of presence about them. Without a doubt they love a walk and strut their stuff better than any model on the catwalk.”

2023 - Issue 6

034 - 035 - NZB - vendor - Cambridge.indd 34

18/12/2023 7:41 pm

Have you noticed any trends among the progeny of the other residents Almanzor and Embellish? “Almanzor really throws his best traits into his yearlings. They are one of my favourites to prep, almost always good-natured and willing. The progeny of Embellish love to try and do things their own way and usually take a little bit of work but they are truly worth the extra time. Once they’re in the rhythm of things they always try hard. Overall, they are all strong willed and determined which is definitely showing on the track.” When do you separate the colts from the fillies? “We paddock wean and the colts and fillies stay together until a couple of weeks after the last mare is out and I have been through and seen everything so that I can put them into mobs depending on size, legs, age, good doers and bad doers, etc.” Do preparations vary in any way according to the individual? “A good yearling manager will never have a one size fits all approach to a yearling prep. They are all different. I love the process of getting to know each horse as an individual and tailoring their prep to suit them. You’ve got to pay attention to every little aspect and know their traits and quirks in order for them to thrive throughout the prep.” Nutrition must also play a vital role? “Nutrition is one of the main components to a yearling prep. Every horse responds differently to feed and they don’t all like the same stuff. Their nutrition has to start right from the beginning in the mare and carry on through.” How important are your farrier and vet in the process? “Our farrier Rory McDonald is one of the most important people in this process. Without him

I couldn’t get these horses to where they are. Our vet Rob Hitchcock is one of the best and a huge help to me also. I’m very lucky to have them.” The new facilities you have must have made life easier? “I’m very lucky, the boxes are so open, the horses are very comfortable and settled in them. The walking ring we have in the middle of the yard makes introducing walking very easy and able to alternate the days the fillies and colts walk between the two tracks enabling us to get our walking done more efficiently. Our paddocks are mostly equi-fencing which has reduced the number of injuries.” How many staff members have a hand in preparing the yearlings? “We have 16 staff members who are only on yearlings and then another 4-5 that come in and help from various departments. But there are at least another 10 people throughout the year that play a part. It’s a big job and I couldn’t do it without my team.” Give us a run down of your involvement in the industry? “I was introduced into the racing game through my dad’s side of the family, they are all obsessed with anything and everything standardbreds. Living in Cambridge, I decided to try out the thoroughbreds and started with Trevor Cruz at 16. I worked there in my holidays and before school until finishing high school. I then went to Waikato Stud and did my first yearling prep under Kerrie Cox. Kerrie and everyone there taught me a lot and I wouldn’t be where I am without them. I then did the sale circuit in Australia before heading to England to work at Tweenhills. I came home in time for another sale circuit before my first season at Cambridge Stud. I’m very lucky that throughout my career I’ve been

able to be a part of foaling units, helping in the breeding barn, vet work etc.” Lastly, do you have any favourites among the draft and why? “It’s hard not to get attached to them when you devote so much of your life to them. However, I would say my favourite filly is the Too Darn Hot-Tavispirit (Lot 468). My favourite colt would have to be a toss-up between the Hello YoumzainSubatomic (Lot 449) and the Wootton Bassett-Semillon (Lot 385). Subatomic is quite quirky and I have done a lot of work with him from a weanling until now. The Semillon is one that is growing on me. He has handled the prep like a champ.” BB

ELSDON PARK

BY RENEE GEELEN

Yvonne Shanks leading lot 370 Alabama Express-Santa Catarina

F

ounded two years ago by Lib and Katrina Petagna to house their expanding broodmare band, Elsdon Park was set up on the stunning property previously owned by Kevin and Jo Hickman. While the Elsdon Park name is relatively new to the industry, the Petagna’s JML racing colours are certainly well known, having been seen to advantage on Gr1 winners such as Lucia Valentina, Sofia Rosa, Tivaci and Nicoletta to name just a few. One of the most unique and beautiful thoroughbred properties in New Zealand; the rolling hills, established green pastures and world class systems and team combine to set the foundation for continued success under the Elsdon Park banner. In 2024, Elsdon Park will present their second draft at the NZB National Yearling Sale with seventeen impressively bred youngsters on offer in Book 1. Zoustar colts are commercially hot, and Lot 55 is the first foal of the Listed winner and Gr1 placed Evalina (I Am Invincible) from the family of Shogun Lodge and Worthy Cause. “He is a well-muscled, fluid moving colt that will appeal to plenty of buyers. He has a beautiful temperament to go with his good looks which makes a big difference to a high-end colt like this,” said General Manager Kerrie Cox. Another top quality colt is Lot 39, the half-brother to two year-old stakes winner and Karaka Million runner up Ethereal Star, he is a Wootton Bassett colt with a huge pedigree behind him. His dam being dual Gr3 winner Eleonora, a half-sister to group winner Supera, while his third dam is the champion mare Ethereal. “While his mother is most famous for nearly kicking Usain Bolt in the

mounting yard before running 3rd in the Australian Oaks, this colt is far more laid back! He goes about his business very professionally and I’d say is the most impressive looking yearling in our draft. He will certainly turn heads when he steps out of his stable at Karaka.” Elsdon Park sold two high quality Savabeel fillies in their 2023 Karaka draft, with one filly reaching an impressive but well deserved $600,000. With only a small number of Elsdon owned fillies born on the property in 2022, the team have been torn about selling Lot 341, the Savabeel filly out of Quizzy Lizzy, a winning half-sister to Stakes winners Pierina and Showemup. “She is a filly with a deep female pedigree and a great type to match,” said Cox. “He is a well grown muscular and very good looking colt that has presence” Per Incanto had a strong season with Gr1 winners Roch ‘n’ Horse and Little Brose flying his flag in Australia, and Elsdon Park will present two of his colts in 2024. Lot 350 is the first foal of Listed winner Riva Capri and Cox believes he is a standout. “Well grown, muscular and very good looking, this colt has presence. He will run and I’m very much looking forward to following his career.” Lib and Katrina Petagna were in the racing ownership of Ardrossan, who left three two year-old stakes winners in his first small crop, and recently sired a Listed winning two year-old in Brisbane. Elsdon Park will present five of his yearlings including Lot 453, a three-quarter brother to recent Listed winner Loch Katrine, and four fillies including Lot 79, a half-sister to Gr3 winner Choice, dam of Gr1 winner Manzoice and Lot 673, out of the black type mare Cortado, a half-sister to Listed Oaklands

Plate winner Harb. “The Ardrossans are certainly making their mark on the racetrack and are proving to be highly sought after. We will be watching the Karaka Million with excitement as the Cortado filly’s full brother is currently sitting high up in the order of entry after a very good win last start.” Two fillies by Almanzor are well related, with both being out of young black type mares; Lot 469 and Lot 361. While the team also offer a Proisir filly, Lot 63, that will be sure to demand plenty of attention. Perhaps one of the most exciting horses on offer is Elsdon Park’s Alabama Express colt, Lot 370. By the end of the spring, Alabama Express’s first two year-olds already included Gr3 Ottawa Stakes winner Karavas and stakes placed Express Yo’Self as well as Sydney’s best 2YO Shangri la Express. There is plenty of hype around this boom young stallion. This colt is the only chance to get your hands on an Alabama Express across all of Book 1 and 2. “This colt will not disappoint. He is an impressive first foal of the stakes winning Savabeel mare Santa Catarina. He really ticks all the boxes.” Elsdon Park is set to be a force to be reckoned with as New Zealand racing takes advantage of their environment and the latest improvements in their prizemoney. “We have a wonderful draft that we are very proud of and look forward to presenting to the market. However, following the racing careers of these horses with the ETP brand on their shoulder is where we will get the most enjoyment. At the end of the day, our main objective is to produce genuine, sound, top-level racehorses, so the next stage of these horse’s careers is what will be most rewarding for us as team.” “At the end of the day, our main objective is to produce genuine, sound, toplevel racehorses, so the next of these horse’s careers is what will be most rewarding for us as a team. HAUNUI FARM

BY KRISTEN MANNING

SNITZEL, the quadruple Champion Australian Sire has a stellar lot in the Haunui 2024 Karaka draft as lot 360, a colt who is the first foal of Gr1 performer Rondinella. This is a nine generation Haunui family and the colt has the “magic” Best In Show inbreeding.

E

arly October - Poetic Champion debuts with a dominant victory at Hawera, backing up that performance with a Listed placing at just his second start in late November. Making it a pretty good start for the members of Haunui Farm’s 2023 Karaka draft. A couple of others have shown nice promise at the early trials and there is plenty more to come as we look towards another big sale for the Karaka farm... 30 well related yearlings by a nice mixture of proven and up-andcoming stallions due to make their way through the ring. “We are really looking forward to Karaka,” Haunui’s Mark Chitty said, noting that “we are very happy with our draft, a nice even selection of horses by a variety of stallions from some lovely families.” They include a rather special colt (lot 360) by the four times Australian Champion Sire Snitzel. The first foal for the Gr1 placed Ocean Park mare Rondinella who did such a great job for Haunui, he is a grandson of the Gr3 mare Valpolicella whose six winners including three stakes winners; Vilanova, Vavasour and Celebrity Dream. Not only is this colt rather

special in regards to pedigree (noting that he boasts a cross of the wonderful mare Best In Show), but also in regards to the stud’s history - “he is a ninth generation Haunui horse,” Chitty said. Now that’s a nice bit of history, Chitty’s grandfather Geoff purchasing Rondinella’s eighth dam Foxona back in the early 1950s. “He is one of a number of very nice colts we are taking to the sale,” Chitty said, also excited about the prospects of lot 464, a Savabeel full brother to the promising three year-old Orchestral. There is a well related Savabeel filly in the mix as well, lot 442 being a half-sister to the exciting 3Y0 To Catch A Thief who at his most recent outing was a somewhat unlucky third in the NZ 2000 Guineas-Gr1, 1600m. Snitzel and Savabeel are two of the proven high class stallions represented in the Haunui draft, others including Wootton Bassett and Proisir. And there are yearlings by some very exciting up-and comers such as Justify, Too Darn Hot, The Autumn Sun, Hello Youmzain, Russian Revolution, Castelvecchio, King’s Legacy and Super Seth with Chitty particularly excited by the prospects of the latter. “I think he

will be an important stallion at Karaka,” he said, happy to be selling lot 496 out of the More Than Ready mare True Heart from the prolific family of Snippets, Forensics, Rewaaya and Not A Single Doubt. Stakes performed mares with Haunui yearlings include the Thorndon MileGr1, 1600m winner A Touch Of Ruby (an Almanzor filly), the Listed winner Celeris (a Per Incanto colt) and the Listed placegetter Tears Of Jupiter (a King’s Legacy colt). And also of great interest is a Per Incanto filly out of the proven producer Khales, dam of Showmanship (Show County Quality-Gr3, 1200m) and the Singapore based dual stakes winner Bahana. There is also plenty of Gr1 “form” to the draft with relations of the big race winners Sea Siren (whose daughter Warm Heart has won two recent Gr1 races in Europe, Serenade Rose, Miss Keepsake, Sky Cuddle, Foreteller, Notoire, Digital Age, Fog Of War, Aegon, Atishu, The Gurkha, Dissident, Shamrocker, Veloce Bella (lot 332 by Proisir is her grandson) and Calveen (lots 130 and 216 by The Autumn Sun and Per Incanto are her granddaughters). What horses are you most excited about seeing in the upcoming autumn? “Campionessa won a Gr2 race two weeks ago and is heading to the Gr1 Zabeel Classic. She’s a highly talented race mare who has won 8 races, is by Contributer, and we bred and race her. We think the next six months are going be very exciting. Another one is Dangerous Liaisons, a full-sister to Sigh who won extremely well the other day at her 2nd start and is a half-sister to Lot 66 in our draft. She should be lots of fun leading into the autumn.” Which horse made you fall in love with racing? “Mapperley Heights. The old man raced her and I remember him screaming at the TV.” Mapperley Heights (Sir Tristram-Claudine, by Battle-Waggon) won eight races including the Gr1 South Australian Derby and was placed in the Gr1 AJC Oaks, Gr1 VRC Oaks, Gr1 Melbourne Cup, and Gr1 Adelaide Cup.

ith graduates like So You Think and Dundeel and Brutal, Mapperley Stud isn’t one to rest on old achievements. Recent drafts have produced stakes winners Leedox, Family Ties, and Australian Gr1 Oaks performers Premise and Le Villi. Just before this issue went to print, Mapperley graduate and current two-year-old Beau Dazzler (Ardrossan) won the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes at only his second start. Mapperley Stud will present 34 yearlings, with 14 in book 1 and 20 in book 2, with 17 of them by their resident sire Contributer. The dual Gr1 winner won both the Ranvet and Chipping Norton has sired seven stakes winners from just over 130 runners led by Gr1 winner Lion’s Roar. How would you sum up your 2024 draft? “It’s a quality draft, well balanced, and we have three first season sires to draw attention,” said Mapperley’s Simms Davison. “Contributer makes up a big portion of our draft and he’s had two stakes winners in the last month and his progeny sold well at the recent Ready To Run Sale, so we are feeling bullish about him heading into this sale with some excellent types by him. Lot 66 is one to note, out of a young mare, Fantasize, whose first foal is Gr3 Sir John Monash Stakes winner Sigh, and he is a real standout colt, well balanced and athletic. We’ve got a filly, Lot 484, the first foal

40

Lot

of a half-sister to Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Thunder Lady. She has a very good family behind her, a big Australian family with Levendi and Tully Thunder and for a first foal, she is a nice mover, very athletic and the mare has done a very good job. Lot 522 is a Contributer colt out of the mare Vis Ta Vie, who has great presence about him. He’s a neat tidy colt, great mover, only medium sized and he knows he’s good. Lot 608 is a quality filly out of Bewildering, a winning daughter of Gr1 winner Allez Wonder. We bought a share in Russian Camelot as we really like him as a sire and we are rapt with both our fillies.” Timing is everything in racing, and Contributer recently added to his excellent record in November 2023 with Listed Stewards Stakes winner Maria Farina while Campionessa won the Gr2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes. “We have a large book two draft which shouldn’t be overlooked with the quality of the fillies in there. Contributer’s filly’s stats are amazing with one in four fillies getting black type for their owners. There is plenty of residual value among them, especially Lot 696 who is a halfsister to Gr2 winner Sacred Park. She’s out of an older mare but you are buying into a top family with immediate black type. Lot 884 is another cracking filly from the family of Ocean Park, if you can get some black type with her, you are away laughing with that family.”

DUNKEL, winner of the SAJC South Australian Derby Gr1.

ver the years, Pencarrow Stud has become a beacon of consistency in New Zealand, steadily producing quality racehorses. Case in point; Gr2 winner Zourion and Gr3 winner Star of Justice are both from their 2022 NZB National Yearling Sale draft who are currently three year-olds, while the year before’s draft included Gr1 winner Dunkel and Gr1 placed winner Mehzebeen ran second in the 2023 Gr1 NZ Oaks. South Australian Derby winner Dunkel cost just $40,000, which is encouraging for buyers, and shows that Pencarrow Stud bring their horses to the market to find homes. “I’m really happy with the quality of the draft that we’ve got this year. As usual we have a range of stallions involved, and some particularly good types. There’s something for everyone in the draft. Whatever the budget you should find something appealing,” said Pencarrow’s Leon Casey. “The Kingman yearling is an outstanding colt with a great pedigree, while several lots have siblings who are

42

currently upgrading their pages such as the half-brother to Zourion, and the full sister to Star of Justice. There’s a selection of top class fillies from our good families. Perhaps the most interesting are the two Hello Youmzain fillies, while there is a Dundeel filly from our Gr1 winner Insouciant. She’s a very big strong mare and has left a lovely type of filly to Dundeel.” Pencarrow Stud will present 24 yearlings in book one of the NZB National Yearling Sale by stallions such as All Too Hard, Almanzor, Anders, Astern, Dundeel, Frosted, Hello Youmzain, Justify, Kingman, King’s Legacy, Ocean Park, Ole Kirk, Pierro, Street Boss, Super Seth, Toronado, U S Navy Flag, Wootton Bassett and Yes Yes Yes. A full sister to current Gr3 winner Star of Justice (Justify) is Lot 62, and this Justify filly is out of winning Fastnet Rock mare Fair Isle, whose four foals to race are all winners. Fair Isle is a daughter of Listed winner and Gr1 placed Miss Scarletti, who is a half-sister to group winners

Abidewithme and Stockman. Star of Justice was sold by Pencarrow Stud at this sale for $190,000 and at the time of printing had won two of her four starts as a spring three year-old. Gr1 winner Insouciant’s Dundeel filly, Lot 143, is a three-quarter sister to stakes placed winner Aqueduct (Dundeel), while her half-sister Inquisitive is a recent race winner. Insouciant is a half-sister to Gr3 winner Copper Mountain and Gr1 placed winner Chateauneuf Dupape, while Gr1 winner Dorabella is also from this family. Lot 644, the fifth foal of Gr1 winner Charmont is a Wootton Bassett filly whose first three dams are stakes winners; Charmont (High Chaparral), Listed winner Martique (Danehill) and dual Gr1 winner Champagne (Zabeel). Kingman has had a sensational start to his stud career, being the second fastest stallion to reach fifty stakes winners after Frankel, and his colt, Lot 210, is the first foal of an imported half-sister to Listed winner Many Colours, dam of dual Gr1 winner Mother Earth, Gr2 winner Night

Colours, and Gr3 winner Ocean Jewel. The pair of Hello Youmzain fillies mentioned by Leon Casey are Lot 675 who is the fourth foal of Listed winner Cote d’Or, a half-sister to Dolmabache and Pure Elegance from the Darci Brahma family that Pencarrow Stud have nurtured for several generations. Lot 87, the second foal of winning mare Flourishing, a half-sister to group winner Amaryllis and Listed winner Papilio, and all three are out of Gr2 winner La Fleur. From the same family is Lot 293, an Astern colt from Papilio whose two winners have won ten races between them. Two colts by Gr1 winner U S Navy Flag have outstanding pedigrees with Lot 139 being a half-brother to Gr1 winner and young sire Turn Me Loose and is also a half-brother to the dam of recent group winner Denby Road; while Lot 671 is a half-brother to Listed Karaka Classic winner Siracusa from the family of Gr1 winners De Beers, Viscount, Tristalove and recent Gr1 placed Gr2 winner Forever Loved. Siracusa’s first foal is an Almanzor colt, Lot 410, and Siracusa won four races, three in succession, and placed in group company several times. Gr3 placed winner I Say Hello’s first foal, Lot 148, is a Pierro colt, and I Say Hello is a daughter of Gr1 winner Say No More, granddam of recent Gr3 winner Lantern Way. Ocean Park colt, Lot 316, is the second foal of stakes

placed winner of five races, Podravina, a daughter of Gr3 winner Posavina who is a half-sister to Gr2 winner Rasa Lila. A trio of Super Seth colts is led by Lot 146, a half-brother to both Gr2 Matamata Breeders Stakes winner Zourion and Gr3 winner Pearl of Alsace, both of whom are currently racing. Zourion has just turned three, and Pearl of Alsace has won six of her nine starts (at time of printing). Lot 407 is the third foal of Listed winner Silver Eclipse, a daughter of Gr3 winner Zino Belle and his third and fourth dam are also stakes winners. King’s Legacy colt, Lot 413, is a halfbrother to Kazalark who was a winner and ran second in the Gr3 Spring Stakes at Newcastle from only four starts. Their winning dam is a daughter of group winner Sarwatch and second dam is four-time Gr1 winner Riverina Charm. There is lots of talk about Yes Yes Yes, the Champion 3YO Colt, whose oldest crop are two year-olds, and Pencarrow Stud will offer Lot 588, a colt out of stakes placed winner Assume (Fastnet Rock) from a European family. Pencarrow Stud’s lengthy roll of honour includes Darci Brahma, Ethereal, Insouciant, Maarek, Guiseppina, Hasselhoof, De Beers and many others and this year’s NZB National Yearling Sale draft is likely to include a few more horses who will enhance Pencarrow Stud’s reputation as winner producers. KIWI

THOROUGHBRED STATUE SERIES BY RENEE GELEEN

In 2023, forty years after Kiwi’s sensational Melbourne Cup win, a statue of the legendary horse has been unveiled in his hometown of Waverley.

F

orty years ago, a cheap horse from New Zealand with the perfect name stormed home from the back of the Melbourne Cup field to win. Legend had it that trainer Snowy Lupton kept Kiwi (Blarney Kiss-Malrayvis, by Messmate) fit by rounding up cattle, and while true, it does underestimate the achievement of Lupton who was a keen racing aficionado and a clever trainer with more than one good horse in his career. He was an all-round horseman who did all his own farrier work. Purchased at the Dalgety Yearling Sales in New Zealand for $1,000 (2023 NZ$7,260) in 1979 by Lupton’s wife Anne who loved chestnuts and had a soft spot for the progeny of Blarney Kiss, Kiwi was a true staying type. To put this price in some context, in 1979, the highest

44

priced yearling in New Zealand sold for $55,000, the major sale had an average of just over $12,000, and the sale that Kiwi went through had a top price of $12,500 with an average around $3,000. Blarney Kiss (Irish Lancer-Log House, by Cosmic Bomb) was an American bred horse who stood at Grasslands Stud in Cambridge. He’d won eleven races, three as a two year-old, improving at three to win the Michigan Derby and Fairmount Park Derby. At stud, he sired ten stakes winners but more impressively, he sired two Gr1 Melbourne Cup winners - Kiwi and 1987 winner Kensei (Blarney Kiss-Kitty’s Dream, by Nauplius), as well as Gr1 AJC Derby winner Our Paddy Boy (Blarney KissGrecian Shade, by Hermes) and just to show his versatility, Gr1 Manawatu Sires’

Produce winner Scotch Reel (Blarney Kiss-Floral Show, by Showoff II). Kiwi’s dam Malrayvis won three races up to a mile, but wasn’t much of a broodmare, leaving only two winners. Kiwi was her sixth foal and she hadn’t had a winner when he went to auction (her other winner was her seventh foal, Painted Dessert, who won six minor races). However, she was a halfsister to Listed Summer Cup winner Grand Filou who raced in the mid1960s (before Kiwi was born). Kiwi had a very typical New Zealand stayer’s preparation, first seen at the races as a three year-old, where he won a 1200m maiden and placed twice from four starts. At four, he won twice over a mile and 2000m from ten starts, while at five, he matured into himself and

won four of his ten starts including the Waverley Cup and then in January of 1983, he won the Gr1 Wellington Cup (over two miles). This time-honoured contest dates back to 1874, although it was downgraded from Gr1 status in 2009. In all those years, no Wellington Cup winner had won a Melbourne Cup. As a spring six-year-old, Kiwi was set an extraordinary challenge - the Gr1 Melbourne Cup. He began with a handicap win over 2000m, placed in another, then won the 2100m Egmont Cup. It was hardly conventional form, but he arrived for the Gr1 Melbourne Cup nice and fit and with the handicapper giving him only 52kg. “Dad always said the Cup was the race he wanted to win. Winning it meant more to him than the money,” said Snowy Lupton’s daughter Nickie Andrews. History was about to be made. Kiwi was mentioned by the commentator after the jump but relaxed and sat at the rear of field while Combat was pushed out to a four-length lead. At the halfway point, the runaway leader was caught by the field, but he kept the lead in a “strung out field” with Kiwi still last. The field bunched up on the final turn with Kiwi clinging to the rear of the field with a lot of traffic in front of him. It was a brave ride by a young Jim Cassidy as he stuck on the fence and picked his way through traffic. The field began to spread out and Kiwi emerged with less than a furlong to go to sprint past everything else and win by a couple of lengths. The race caller didn’t see him until near the end still calling the leading four horses when suddenly “Kiwi. Kiwi

will beat them all. He’s come from last. Kiwi will win the Melbourne Cup.” He came home to run fourth in a handicap over 2200m in December before a long spell and another crack at the 1984 Cup. Kiwi had another unconventional preparation, placing in a couple of 2000m handicap events at home in New Zealand, but was scratched on vet’s advice for the 1984 Gr1 Melbourne Cup. His trainer always maintained that he was fit and could’ve won, with New Zealanders seeing it as bad sportsmanship from the Australians. Lupton took Kiwi to Japan for that season’s Gr1 Japan Cup, where he ran sixth, and again Lupton felt that he could’ve won if he’d run in Melbourne but felt that the lack of the Melbourne Cup had impacted on his fitness. In 1985, now an eight-year-old, Kiwi had a similar preparation, winning the Listed Taranaki Stakes over 2000m before heading to the Cup, where he ran eleventh due to the wet track. Next up, he ran third in the Gr2 Sandown Cup. At nine, Kiwi won the Listed Taranaki Stakes again, and produced a similar come from last run in the Gr1 Melbourne Cup finishing fourth while carrying 54.5kg. After that race, he returned to New Zealand where he finished fourth in another handicap but was then retired. Kiwi lived on the Lupton family farm in retirement until his death, aged 17, in 1995. He remains the only horse to have won the Wellington Cup and Melbourne Cup. In 2023, forty years after Kiwi’s sensational Melbourne Cup win, a statue of the legendary horse has

been unveiled in his hometown of Waverley. It is the posthumous final work by the sculptor Fridtjof Hanson, who donated his model to the town. A committee comprising of Brian Rook, Jacq Dwyer, Nickie Andrews, Gillian Hooper, Laraine Sole, Pru Hyland, Claire Symes and Dot McDermott worked to bring the sculpture to Waverley. How did the statue begin? “We didn’t know that Fridtjof Hanson was building the statue, but we heard about it when he rang a couple of locals asking if they wanted to see the plasticine model,” said Brian Rook. “A contingent of us went to New Plymouth and had a look at it. We were blown away, and then he stunned us with the offer to donate it to the community if we wanted to get it bronzed. From there it just fell into place. We put together a committee, Hanson donated the model, then we commissioned a guy to do the bronze work. Unfortunately Fridtjof died and so did the bronze worker. Luckily for us Brett Rangitaawa from The Heavy Metal Company in Wellington said he’d honour the original quote. We applied to the South Taranaki District Council for funds from their culture and arts fund, and they granted us with $150,000 which was coincidentally the amount for the bronze. The whole process took about four years due to COVID and a bunch of other things.” Casting the bronze wasn’t the only expense. “We had to fundraise for engineering reports because it was going to be on council land. It’s very windy here in Waverley and the council wanted to ensure that it would be safe in fierce

“The statue’s pose depicts a race finish,” said Rook. “It’s an iconic pose.” “Fridtjof looked at multiple photos to get the proportions right,” said Andrews. “The family lent him lots of photos of Kiwi, and he used all the publicly available ones too.

winds. The whole community got behind the idea with fundraising through a quiz night and a Givealittle page. Local businesses were also supportive and a fundraiser held at Grangewilliam Stud was supported by the local racing community and raised $9,000.” The fund raising went towards the cost of the concrete footings and transporting the bronze from the casting work. Security cameras were donated by a local business. “Every year the media would come and talk to my parents but after twenty years, my father said, ‘I would’ve thought they would have forgotten about it.’ He was always surprised by the ongoing interest because he didn’t think he’d done anything too special,” said Snowy Lupton’s daughter Nickie Andrews. “He died in 2004 and he’d be shocked by this statue and by the interest in it. He used to say, ‘I was just doing what I loved.’ Kiwi and Dad were great mates, they had an amazing relationship, but it wasn’t just Kiwi. All the horses and stock were Mum and Dad’s absolute passion. They often would say, ‘Feed your animals before you feed yourself.’ Dad was a very gentle and humble man, a calm person, and precise and detailed in things he did. He grew up in a family of eight children. They all rode, all were involved in horses, several were amateur jockeys. Their whole life was horses, and the next generation are continuing it. My nephew Isaac Lupton is a successful jumps jockey and my niece Jaimee-Lee Lupton is a trainer. Mum, who bought Kiwi, was also from a racing family, the Alexanders.” In an interview on 1989 TVNZ Holmes Programme Dad remarked to the interviewer, “He’s been one of the family really and we have travelled along way together and been to a lot of places. You get very attached to a horse after being so close to him for so long.” The statue’s pose was chosen by the artist before the committee knew it was being made. Do you know much about Hanson’s choice? “The statue’s pose depicts a race finish,” said Rook. “It’s an iconic pose.” “Fridtjof looked at multiple photos to get the proportions right,” said Andrews. “The family lent him lots of photos of Kiwi, and he used all the publicly available ones too.” “He was a surgeon before he became a sculptor and had a surgeon’s eyes for the anatomy. Kiwi was a tall horse but lightly framed, and he must’ve had a huge heart,” said Rook. “Someone did a calculation that in his last to first run home, he would’ve been 30% faster than the second placed horse. When Snowy took Kiwi to Melbourne, he wanted him to be in a rural setting

and Kevin Myers recommended a stable out at Mornington where he thought Kiwi would feel at home. Waverley is such a horsey town that the slightest problem with the statue would be noticed by locals. They have had to lift the statue as initially two hooves were placed lower into the plinth than they should have been.” The statue was unveiled in September 2023. How did that go? “It was beautiful weather. Waverley Racing Club put on a special race day on the same day. The club is about two kilometres from the statue, and they put up a marquee for us. Nickie and Jeff Andrews donated the morning tea on behalf of her parents Snowy and Anne.” said Rook. Approximately 350 people attended the unveiling along with 70 Lupton and Alexander relatives. This included Snowy Lupton’s niece who travelled from Perth. “I had a local dressmaker create the cover in Kiwi’s colours,” said Andrews. “And we had some local children dress in the colours of local owners. Snowy and Anne Lupton’s great-granddaughter Paige Lupton wore Kiwi’s colours.” The statue was unveiled by Kevin Gray a well-known horse trainer, Phil Nixon the Mayor of the South Taranaki District Council, Nickie Andrews, and Fridtjof Hanson’s two grandsons Lucas and Blake. “When they started to pull the cover off, a bunch of other children joined in and it was great fun.” Nickie Andrews, Ian Smith a life member of the Waverley Racing Club and family friend, Des Coppins, a well known racing journalist and talkback racing show

host, Phil Nixon, the Mayor of the South Taranaki District Council and Christian Hanson, son of Fridjtof Hanson all shared their memories at the unveiling. “We played Kiwi’s Melbourne Cup win during the unveiling and when the commentator said, Kiwi’s going to beat them all, the crowd at the unveiling started cheering as if the race were live, not from forty years ago,” said Rook. Are there any future plans for the statue, or anything else you want to add? “We already have security cameras on it, but we want to add some lighting and an information board,” said Rook. “It’s a bit pie in the sky, but I’d like to get a touch screen version with interactive information. We are selling bricks to go around the statue with donors’ names on to raise funds for these things. There’s been a lot of local interest in it. We expected to sell around a hundred bricks, but it seems like we might get a thousand which is amazing.” “The Victoria Racing Club has maintained contact with the family over the years,” said Andrews. They do a fantastic job liaising with the families of past winners, and often invite us to Melbourne Cup events and Cup tour events. When my niece, JaimeeLee Lupton won the Wellington Cup (with Soleseifei) a couple of years ago, I got an email from the VRC congratulating her.” Soleseifei (ShockingEvaline, by Van Nistlerooy) raced in a variation of the Lupton colours and continues a long tradition that the Lupton family has with racing. hen a yearling vendor has a stunning record of success like Phoenix Park, it pays to take a close look at their offerings. In recent years, Phoenix Park has sold Australia’s best racehorse Mr Brightside, as well as Gr1 winners He’s a Doozy and The Chosen One. Currently, this season’s well performed 2YO Bellatrix Star purchased by David Ellis’s Te Akau Stud for $80,000 at the 2023 Karaka Sale - is shaping well (winner and stakes placed). “Mr Brightside has been a good flagbearer for us,” said Phoenix Park’s Janine Dunlop. “We have had three individual Gr1 winners in the last couple of season’s racing over a mile alone. The Chosen One, Mr Brightside, and He’s A Doozy.” The hits will keep coming this time and buyers will be hard pressed to settle on who appeals the most. There is a half to the very good dual Gr1 winner Te Akau Shark, a filly from a half-sister to the Everest winner Giga Kick, and catalogue pages filled with black type – pages which include names such as Gr1 winners Artorius, Giga

48

Kick, La Diosa, De Beers, Tristalove, Viking Ruler, Te Akau Shark, Kalanisi, Delectation, Pondarosa Miss, etc. Phoenix Park will present nineteen yearlings in 2024 with thirteen of them in book one and representing a good array of stallions such as Circus Maximus, Fierce Impact, Hello Youmzain, King of Comedy, all first season sires plus other top line stallions Medaglia d’Oro, Ocean Park, Per Incanto, Proisir, Satono Aladdin, Saxon Warrior, Staphanos, and Sweynesse. Newly crowned NZ Champion Sire Proisir’s yearling filly, Lot 482, is sure to excite buyers as she is a daughter of tough nine-race winner The Pearler who won the Listed Inglewood Stakes and was several times group placed. This filly is a half-sister to Gr1 placed winner The Lustre (whose Ocean Park filly is Lot 481) and currently racing Sky Horse who has won five races in Australia and ran fourth in the Gr3 Gunsynd Classic. This is the famous New Zealand family of The Phantom Chance, The Chosen One, The Pearler, The Jewel, and Irish Chance. A Medaglia d’Oro filly from the family

of Artorius has Dunlop excited. “She’s a cracking type, with a pedigree to match.” Lot 641, this filly out of a young American mare, who is the half-sister to Listed winner and Gr1 placed Grace and Power, dam of Gr1 Darley Classic winner Delectation and grandam of dual Gr1 winner Artorius. A Per Incanto half-brother to two yearold Listed winner Caduceus is Lot 92, and this colt is also a half-brother to group placed winner of four races Katie Perrie, while his dam won on debut and is a half-sister to group winners Ottimo and Eight Street. Per Incanto filly, Lot 498, is the third foal of Listed winner Twoznotenough who won nine races and is a half-sister to Listed winner Brooklyn Bay who won twelves races, and this is a strong colonial Australia family that includes Bonanova, Bonaichi, Telesto and Fraternity. Staphanos began his stud career well with his first two year-olds last season when Pignan won the Gr1 Manawatu Sires Produce and he has two beautifully bred fillies in this Phoenix Park draft with Lot 345 out of a half-sister to outstanding dual Gr1 winner and The Everest winner Giga Kick who in turn is a half-brother to the dam of Gr1 winner and promising sire Alabama Express. Lot 1007 is the second foal of group placed winner Te Toro Pearl (Bullbars). Sweynesse colt, Lot 417, is a half-brother to two winners in Australia, out of a precocious mare who won five races, two of those at two, and his dam is a halfsister to Listed winner Princess Emmy, dam of two stakes winners in Thurlow and Three Kings. Sweynesse of course is the sire of the World’s best sprinter in Lucky Sweynesse, victorious in the Hong King Sprint yet again in early December. A Saxon Warrior colt, Lot 172, is from the same family as Phoenix Park Gr1 winning graduate, The Chosen One, and his young dam has already left two winners. She is a half-sister to three stakes winners; Gr1 winner and Champion 3YO Filly La Diosa, Gr3 winner Solid Billing who ran third in the Gr1 Sydney Cup, and Listed winner Thy who placed in the Gr1 Australian Oaks. Proven Gr1 sire Reliable Man’s colt, Lot 471 is out of a young Street Cry mare who is a half-sister to Gr2 Queensland Guineas winner Saxon. This is the family of dual Gr1 winner Kalanisi (Gr1 Breeder’s Cup Turf and Gr1

Several of Phoenix Park’s yearlings are by first season sires and there are plenty of exciting prospects among them led by the half-brother to Gr1 winner Te Akau Shark, by Circus Maximus, and this colt, Lot 599, is a son of Gr2 winner Bak Da Chief, who is a half-sister to Gr1 winner Pondarosa Miss. Hello Youmzain colt, Lot 268, is out of winning mare Nucleonic, a daughter of Singapore Champion 2YO and Champion 3YO Filly Mexican Rose, who has also produced 2022 Gr2 Bill Stutt Stakes winner Tijuana. First season sire King of Comedy (Kingman) has three colts in this draft. - Lot 257, a half-brother to two stakes placed winners in Wolfgang and Naval Fleet, and his dam is a winning halfsister to Gr2 winner Te Akau Coup form the family of Don Garcia. - Lot 775 is the first foal of group placed winning mare Jakkalbomb, a threequarter sister to triple Gr1 winner and triple Derby winner Explosive Jack and this is also the family of Gr1 NZ Derby winner Vin de Dance. - Lot 826 is the first foal of a threequarter-sister to Lion Tamer who won the Gr1 Victoria Derby and Gr1 Underwood, and this colt’s dam is also a half-sister to the stakes placed dam of Gr3 Caulfield Classic winner Mr Maestro. Fierce Impact colt, Lot 1124, comes from the current Australian family with his dam being a winning half-sister to

Gr1 winner Arapaho Miss, dam of Gr1 winner Miami Bound and Listed winner De Little Engine. This colt’s dam has done a good job so far with two winners in Australia from her first two foals. SEATON PARK

BY RENEE GELEEN

Gr1 NZ 1000 Guineas winner MOLLY BLOOM is a Seaton Park graduate.

S

eaton Park’s Scott Eagleton and Sarah Wallis had two reasons to celebrate this spring. One: they bred and sold Gr1 New Zealand One Thousand Guineas winner Molly Bloom, and two: this year marks the twentieth year for Seaton Park. Purchased from Seaton Park’s draft by Wexford Stables for $150,000, Molly Bloom took her record to two wins from five starts as a three year-old this spring. Seaton Park have developed a reputation for excellent horsemanship skills and this is reflected in the quality of graduates coming through their yearling drafts. Molly Bloom is far from a one-hit wonder for Seaton Park, who also recently sold Listed winners Art de Triomphe and Langkawi, and stakes placed winners One More Time, Tivaan Warrior, and Arctic Shock. “Molly Bloom is the first foal from Dancilla. It’s a bit of a fun story really,” said Scott Eagleton. “One of my very first clients here were Allan and Colleen Jackson and one day this filly arrived home with my brand on it. I asked the staff who it was – Dancilla. She was a cracking type and when I was

50

talking to Allan a few weeks later, he asked me what he should do with her now that they were phasing out of the business. I said I’ll have her. In the end, I wrote off his last agistment bill as the purchase price. I bought into the syndicate for Ace High, I loved the sireline and that he’d been a spring Gr1 winner, and the deal with Rich Hill Stud was a great one. It was a logical mating, a nice young mare with a nice young stallion… Boom, Molly Bloom.” Vendors often talk about how their draft includes something for everyone across different budget levels, but this rings out most true in the Seaton Park draft with one yearling in book one and twenty-two yearlings in book two of the 2024 NZB National Yearling Sale. The yearlings are a must-inspect as they cover a range of sires and pedigree depths, and there is bound to be a gem or two with outstanding physicals among them. “We had to withdraw Lot 338 as she had a paddock injury, so we only have the Proisir colt in book one. He’s a lovely big physical horse, typical of Proisir although he probably stands over more

ground than some of them. Definitely catches the eye and is a lovely type.” Lot 436 is by recently crowned Champion Sire Proisir from winning mare Starry Heights, a half-sister to Gr3 winner Rising Heights and to the dam of Gr3 winner Supreme Heights, from the Sky Heights and Mapperley Heights family. The draft has a big range of stallions such as Ace High, Ardrossan, Cool Aza Beel, Darci Brahma, Embellish, Ribchester, Shocking, Staphanos, Sweynesse, Swiss Ace, Time Test, Vadamos and War Decree. “I’ve been here at Seaton Park for twenty years and now my fiancé Sarah Wallis is a massive part of the farm too. In 2020 we bought a new farm and have just finished renovating and building it. Our business is really breeding. We foal down about 200 mares a year, and have clients whose horses are here all year round. The only yearlings we take to sale are those of our clients, that’s why the balance changes every year. We usually have between five and eight yearlings in book one, but this year, most of our clients at that end of the market had fillies that they wanted to retain. There’s a lot of

different stallions involved in this draft and all the horses are from nice families and there are some fantastic individuals.” Some of the pedigree highlights include: Lot 718: Swiss Ace colt who is the second foal of five race winner Exemplar (Showcasing) who won four races in succession, and is from the family of Gr1 VRC Derby winner Second Coming. Lot 767: Embellish filly who is the second foal of a winning daughter of Gr1 winner Lashed. Lot 855: Staphanos colt out of a halfsister to Explosive Jack, winner of the 2023 Gr1 Sydney Cup, as well as two Derby s as a three year-old. Lot 918: Embellish filly who is a halfsister to three winners, and her dam is out of Listed winner Money Thinks, dam of Listed winner Heritiere, and Gr1 placed winner Sailing to Rio who is the dam of Gr2 winner Krambambuli. Lot 935: A colt by Molly Bloom’s sire Ace High whose dam is a winning Savabeel half-sister to Champion Miler in Singapore Better Than Ever, who won 17 races, twelve of those in succession. Lot 994: A Vadamos half-sister to dual Gr3 winner Supreme Heights from the ‘Heights’ family that includes Gr1 winner Sky Heights. Lot 1009: War Decree filly who is the first foal of good racemare Thunder Bay (Niagara) who won twice and placed in the Listed Welcome Stakes and is a full sister to currently racing Mornington Guineas winner Chuck a Luck. Of interest, this filly traces back to the Eight Carat family. “She reminds me of Molly Bloom at same age, lovely head and shoulder, good walking filly, eye catching.”

Lot 1029: Ardrossan has started his stud career with a bang, and his colt is out of stakes placed winner of nine races, Venetian Raider, whose foal Elle Aye Lady is a winner and currently racing. This is the family of Dulcify. “He’s a full brother to a horse who made over $300,000 ($325,000) at the recent Ready to Run sale and he’s a beautiful horse with serious upside.” Lot 1080: Ace High colt who is out of a half-sister to Gr2 winner of nine races and Gr1 placed Sarajay. This colt’s older brother Leinster has placed in both his starts this spring and looks very promising. This is the family of recently retired group winning stayer Lunar Flare and Gr1 placed Listed winner On A Swing. Lot 1106: Darci Brahma filly with plenty of residual value, as she is out of a winning Pins mare who is a threequarter-sister to Gr1 winner Katie Lee. Katie Lee is a half-sister to Gr1 winner Banchee, while their group winning dam is a half-sister to Gr1 winner Gee I Jane. Lot 1117: Time Test filly who is the fourth foal of Constellation who was a winner at two and ran third in the Gr1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (behind Recite) at just her third start. Constellation is a half-sister to Australian Listed winner Al Jameel who placed in the Gr1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes. This filly’s fourth dam is triple Gr1 winner Canny Lass, a full sister to good sire Canny Lad, and this is also the family of Rothfire. The twentieth anniversary draft for Seaton Park is an interesting mixture of stallions and pedigrees, and given the farm’s winner producing record, there are bound to be some classy racehorses among them. T

he Oaks Stud must be thrilled with the burgeoning stud career of their resident stallion U S Navy Flag, whose oldest foals are three year-olds and include Wanganui Guineas winner Chantilly Lace, and Gr1 placed winner Aprilla who recently placed in the Gr2 Edward Manifold Stakes. With many other stakes placed horses currently racing, the future looks bright for U S Navy Flag. “We are bringing a lot of nice horses that I’m happy with, they are progressing well at this stage and will meet the middle of the market nicely,” said Rick Williams, talking to Bluebloods about Karaka 2024. “U S Navy Flag was the Champion First Season Sire and his progeny are trending in the right direction. We have a nice bunch of colts by him. The NZB Ready to Run Sale recently was massive, maybe the most exciting sale I’ve seen in my time, and hopefully that optimism flows into the yearling sales. We are having a good year with our racing team too and have sold some nice horses out of the trials.” In 2024, The Oaks Stud will present a draft of thirteen yearlings at the NZB National Yearling Sale. The Oaks Stud

52

offered exciting three year-old Burn to Shine (So You Think) in 2022, and at the time of printing, he had won three of his six starts including the Gr3 War Decree Stakes, and had placed three times all in black type company. His half-brother by Hello Youmzain is Lot 415, and he is also a half-brother to group placed winner Embers, out of Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Smoulder. Smoulder is a daughter of Listed VRC Ottawa Stakes winner Flying Firebird. “He is the standout horse in the draft. A big strong horse that will appeal to many.” Hello Youmzain colt, Lot 324, is the fourth foal of winning mare Powerful Story (Written Tycoon) whose first foal to race is a winner. Powerful Story is out of a winning half-sister to dual Gr1 winner and dual The Everest winner Redzel, as well as Gr3 winner Danerich. Magna Grecia colt, Lot 158, who is the first foal of Gr3 winner Kali, a half-sister to group placed winner Royal Dominance. Five colts by The Oaks Stud’s emerging resident sire U S Navy Flag all have

well-credentialed pedigrees. Catalyst (Darci Brahma) won the Gr1 New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas for The Oaks Stud, then ran second to Alligator Blood in the Gr3 CS Hayes Stakes before being injured. His full sister, Evana Rhama won twice, and her second foal is Lot 57. This is the family of Gr1 winner Devise (Darci Brahma) and Australian group winners Zurella and King Lionheart. Blanket Bay (Darci Brahma) won twice as a three year-old, running second in the Gr1 NZ Oaks to More Than Sacred, and fourth in the Gr1 SAJC Oaks, and her second foal is U S Navy Flag colt, Lot 618. Blanket Bay is a half-sister to stakes placed winner Elegant Emerald, dam of group winners Colorado Star and Ritani. Lot 186 is out of winning mare Leica Lady whose first foal, Leica Model, has won twice in Australia this season. Leica Lady is a half-sister to Gr1 placed winner Nothing Leica Cat, dam of three stakes winners; Stampede (winner of eight races including two at Gr3 level including the Gr3 Colin Stephen Handicap), Thinkin’ Big (Gr3 Gloaming Stakes and placed in

the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes), and Just Thinkin’ (Listed Dulcify Stakes). The first foal of Dominance is Lot 19, and Dominance is a half-sister to Hot Pursuit and About the Journey, while her dam, Dominant, was a stakes placed winning half-sister to dual Gr1 winner Hero. Another U S Navy Flag colt with Australian form on the page is Lot 878, whose winning dam is a daughter of Listed VRC Red Roses Stakes winner Wyndham Special, who also placed in the Gr2 Sandown Guineas and is the grandam of Listed Dulcify Handicap winner Mickey Blue Eyes. Five yearlings in this draft are by The Oaks Stud’s resident proven sire, the now retired Darci Brahma, and the Gr1 winner has been a consistent sire over the years with 56 stakes winners and twelve of those at Gr1 level. The three Darci Brahma colts have plenty of appeal to the Australian and Hong Kong markets with Lot 387 being the first foal of Listed Oaks Prelude winner Seven Seas, and this is the family of The Oaks Stud bred and raced Horse of the Year Seachange who won seven Gr1 races, and is a half-sister to Gr1 winner Keepa Cruisin whose full sister is the second dam of this Darci Brahma colt.

Imported mare Lady Woodcote is a full sister to Gr1 winner Maarek, and she’s been a good broodmare, leaving four winners including stakes placed winner Woodcote Lass. Her unraced daughter Lady Freya’s first foal is Lot 798. The final Darci Brahma colt in the 2024 draft is Lot 1072 who is the first foal of Amastar, a good race mare who won six races and was fourth in the Listed Levin Stakes. Amastar is a daughter of stakes placed winner Amirar, from the family of Australian stakes winner Thursday’s Child. The Oaks Stud tend to retain their fillies to race, with a strong racing focus on the farm, and the 2024 draft only includes two fillies; both by Darci Brahma who is emerging as an excellent broodmare sire, thanks to the recent win of Ozzmosis (Zoustar-No More Tears, by Darci Brahma) in the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and last season’s boom three year-old Gr1 winner Pier (Proisir-La Vitesse, by Darci Brahma). The Oaks Stud will present Darci Brahma filly, Lot 996 who is the first foal of winning mare Sweet Hunter (Swiss Ace), a half-sister to Singapore Horse of the Year Infantry who won nine races, four at stakes level. Lot 1004 is the first foal of Tavihunter (Tavistock), a three-

quarter-sister to Gr3 winner Tralee Rose (Tavistock), and this filly carries some interesting linebreeding to Danehill and Sadler’s Wells. This is the family of Gr1 winners Serenade Rose and Trekking. With several quality pedigreed colts in this draft, The Oaks Stud looks to continue their long established reputation for producing quality racehorses. BB

oburn Farm graduate Lucky Sweynesse proved he is the best sprinter in Hong Kong with another emphatic victory in the Gr1 Hong Kong Sprint recently to take his record to fifteen wins and five placings from 21 starts and earnings over HK$70.5million (NZ$14.7million). In the same draft was Gr2 Wellington Guineas winner Shamus, while the very consistent three year-old To Catch A Thief was sold by Woburn Farm at the 2022 NZB National Yearling Sale. To Catch A Thief has put together an interesting record, having run third in eight of his nine starts, placing in the Gr1 Sistema Stakes and Gr1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes at two and the Gr1 Two Thousand Guineas at three. “He’s raced against the best of his age group for his whole career. He was a big strong yearling who has gone on with it and looks like a derby horse,” said Woburn Farm’s Adrian Stanley. Listed winner Itza Charmdeel went through the 2022 draft, although was passed in, going on to win the Listed Ryder Stakes at two, while Woburn Farm’s 2023 draft have just turned two and already count city winner Archaic Smile (Saxon Warrior) among them. Woburn Farm have put together a draft of 29 yearlings for the 2024 NZB National Yearling Sale with 14 in book one. “It’s a nice lineup of individuals. A good variety of stallions with some very good families and several with Gr1 form up close.” A half-brother to Gr1 NZ Derby winner Rocket Spade by Champion Sire Written Tycoon is sure to turn heads. Lot 553 is out of stakes placed winner of six races, Affairoftheheart, who is a half-sister to dual Gr1 winner Soriano and GR3 winner Kaiser Franz. One of the most exciting yearlings in

54

the catalogue is Lot 274, a Wootton Bassett colt out of Gr1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes winner O’Marilyn who has produced Gr2 winner O’President and two other Australian winners, and O’Marilyn is a half-sister to Gr1 Australian Derby winner Headturner, Gr1 Caulfield Guineas winner Anacheeva, and Gr2 winner Kroner. “He’s thrown to the dam, very athletic type, racy animal.” Their other Wootton Bassett colt, Lot 185, is from Gr2 Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Legless Veuve who is a half-sister to Gr3 winner and Gr1 placed Tootsie, the dam of Gr2 winner Ocean Emperor and the granddam of Gr1 winner Never Been Kissed. This is the family of NZ Horse of the Year and four-time Gr1 winner Probabeel and Champion 3YO and dual Gr1 winner Savvy Coup. “A lovely strong colt.” Buyers looking for a filly with residual value should inspect Lot 161, a Ribchester half-sister to Gr1 winner Consensus, whose oldest foal is an unraced three year-old, so there is plenty of upside still to come in this family. Gr2 winner Tavidream’s half-sister, Lot 658, is an Almanzor filly, and her winning dam has left six winners, led by Tavidream, as well as stakes placed winner Tizmagic. This is the family of Gr1 winners Tarzino and Kindacross. First season sires with well-bred colts include the North Pacific colt, Lot 594, out of a winning Redoute’s Choice daughter of Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Fritz’s Princess, and this colt is a halfbrother to two winners in Australia. “Both the North Pacific’s are outstanding types, the colt should suit the Hong Kong market and the filly looks to be a Karaka Millions type.” The filly, Lot 357, is out of a full sister to Gr2 winner Pinwheel, who won twelve races and

$1.2million, while up and coming sire Dirty Work is in the same family. First season sire Circus Maximus has a colt, Lot 634, out of Gr3 winner Cassini, dam of stakes placed winner Sheng Tong Viva. Woburn Farm have two outstanding Tagaloa colts on offer. Lot 238 is the first foal of Gr1 New Zealand Oaks winner Miss Sentimental, who is from the family of Gr1 winners Dracula, Complacent, Wandjina, and Lucky Unicorn. A halfbrother to Gr3 winner Violate, Lot 392, is a Tagaloa colt whose dam is closely related to Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Champagne Cuddles, while his second dam is Gr1 winner Sky Cuddles. Among the fifteen yearlings in book two, Lot 1087 is a Merchant Navy halfbrother to Listed winner Bright Blue Sky; while Lot 828 is a King’s Legacy filly who is the second foal of a tough racemare who won seven races in Australia. With sires such as Almanzor, Circus Maximus, Embellish, Eminent, Fastnet Rock, King’s Legacy, Maurice, Merchant Navy, North Pacific, Ocean Park, Per Incanto, Redwood, Ribchester, Russian Revolution, Shamexpress, Tagaloa, Time Test, Turn Me Loose, Wootton Bassett, and Written Tycoon, the Woburn draft is brimming with potential.
