BLUECLAWS 2019 BlueClaws Fans, Welcome back to another exciting season of BlueClaws Baseball here at FirstEnergy Park! This promises to be another special summer for the BlueClaws, the Township of Lakewood, the Jersey Shore, the Phillies organization, and you, our great fans. My name is Art Matin, managing partner of Shore Town Baseball. As you may know, Shore Town Baseball acquired operating interest of the BlueClaws late in the 2017 season and this year is our second full season as partners. From the minute we came on board, the entire community has been overwhelming in their support, and we are just as excited today as we continue to build the BlueClaws as we were when we started this process. Our pledge remains the same - to keep the BlueClaws as the Shore’s leader in affordable, family entertainment. Last year, we opened a brand-new Mini Golf Course down the right field line, the Toyota World of Lakewood Home Run Pavilion in centerfield, a new Biergarten down the left field line, as well as upgrading the HVAC system on the Luxury Suite level. This year, we have made substantial improvements to our Picnic Areas. These improvements include enhanced seating, both in quality and view, upgraded menus, and other fan amenities. Further, the BlueClaws are thrilled to participate in Minor League Baseball’s Copa de la Diversion program this year as we bring the Medusas de Lakewood to life. We will be celebrating the best in Hispanic culture and heritage across four games this summer with special food items, live music, and more. We have additional information included in this program or at BlueClaws.com/Copa. I would like to thank our tremendous Corporate Partners, without whom we would not be able to do all we can for you, the fans. Our Corporate Partners have been incredibly supportive over the entirety of the BlueClaws and we are honored to have built such relationships. Additionally, we thank business leaders around the Shore and our municipal and state leaders including senator Robert Singer and Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles. We would also like to thank our partners with the Phillies, and wish them the best this season. Finally, we’d like to thank you, our great fans. The two decades of support you have shown the BlueClaws is something we are honored to have received and something we will continue to strive to earn moving into the future.

PLAY BALL!

BlueClaws Notebook Bohm, Sweet Bohm

Alec Bohm, the third overall pick in the 2018 draft, launched a home run on April 14th at Delmarva. The 6-5 Omaha, Nebraska native who went to Wichita State, crushed a ball down the left field line at Perdue Stadium, which hung inside the foul pole for Bohm’s first professional home run. After a 1-13 start to the season, Bohm settled in nicely anchoring the second-spot in the BlueClaws lineup. “The 1-13 didn’t affect me at all. I hit the ball hard and wasn’t having much luck. I started to get some hits, including some soft hits and things started to go a bit better from a luck standpoint and the swing has been better,” he said. Bohm also drew seven walks in his first 50 BlueClaws plate appearances and walked more than he struck out in his junior year in Wichita. “It’s developed,” Bohm said of his plate patience. “Early on in my college career I was super-aggressive, but each year I’ve gotten more selective and looked for something I want to hit instead of just swinging.” Bohm is the 11th first-round pick to play for the BlueClaws, and only 2017 BlueClaw Mickey Moniak, the first overall pick in 2016, was taken higher than Bohm.

Bouncing Around

Alec Bohm

When he arrived in Clearwater for Spring Training, Cole Stobbe had with him two third base gloves. Shortly after he arrived in Lakewood with the rest of his teammates, he had already added three more to his collection – a first baseman’s glove, a glove for second base, and an outfielder’s glove. Coming into 2019, Stobbe had only played third base and shortstop since being drafted by the Phillies in 2016. However, in a five-day period over the season’s second week, the 21 year old played his first professional games at second base, first base, and in left field. “It’s been smooth,” Stobbe said. “Working with [manager] Mike [Micucci] and [coach] Adam [Godwin], they get their point across on what you’re supposed to do on a day to day basis. They prepare us for the game.” Learning the outfield has been different for Stobbe, a life-long infielder. “The only time you get to work at game speed is when you power shag during BP,” he said. “That’s one of the main things that they have been preaching and I’ve tried to get some live reps every day.”

Hatter vs. Hatter

On April 15th in West Virginia, it was Hatter against Hatter – Stetson Hatter against Stetson Hatter that is. BlueClaws starter Jack Perkins, an 11th round pick last year, squared off against his college teammate Logan Gilbert, the Mariners’ first-round pick last year. Perkins struck out seven over four scoreless innings while Gilbert gave up one run in five innings, striking out eight. A third Hatter, West Virginia’s Benjamin Onyshko, was the winning pitcher as the Power topped the BlueClaws in the 11th. Why the Hatters? John B. Stetson was chairman of DeLand Academy when the school was re-named in his honor. Their athletic teams were given the nickname “Hatters” in 1901 in honor of their chairman, maker of Stetson hats.
