The Medusas de Lakewood, the local entry into MiLB’s Copa de la Diversion initiative, made their debut on Friday, May 3rd at FirstEnergy Park presented by Toyota World of Lakewood. The night, like all 2019 Medusas games, featured fun for the entire family. There were food and drink specials throughout the park, live music in the Biergarten, special promotions, and much more. Additionally, thanks to several local partners including Jose Angeles Painting, La Casa de la Tia, Latinos Unidos, the NAALP, OCEAN Inc, Prudential, State Farm, Reliance Medical Group, and Tornandez Mexicano, hundreds of local children were able to attend their first game. If you would like to participate as a Copa partner, email copa@blueclaws.com. Our remaining Medusas de Lakewood games are June 23rd (Sunday, 1:05 pm), July 26th (Friday, 7:05 pm) and August 28th (Wednesday, 7:05 pm).

new and improved PICNIC AREAS The next wave of BlueClaws ballpark enhancements comes in the form of brand-new,revamped Investors Bank Picnic Areas will be available for BlueClaws fans throughout the season. Included with the new picnic area is an extensive redesign that will incorporate comfortable mesh swivel seats, tables and food service. The area also comes with better views of the game for fans, and new food and beverage menus as well. The new picnic area on the third base side is perfect for business and networking opportunities. Meanwhile, the picnic area that is located on the first base side of the stadium, near Mini Golf and Shore Town Soft Serve, is ideal for family outings and other parties. The picnic re-design comes one year after the BlueClaws opened a brand-new Mini Golf Course in right field, the Toyota World of Lakewood Home Run Pavilion in centerfield, and the Biergarten down the line in left field.

BlueClaws Notebook
Bohm Promoted to Clearwater Third baseman Alec Bohm, the third overall pick in last year’s draft, began the season with Lakewood and hit .367 in 22 games and was promoted to Hi-A Clearwater. Bohm was also named Phillies Minor League Player of the Month. He was the second-highest draftee ever to play for Lakewood, following #1 overall pick Mickey Moniak, a 2017 BlueClaw.
Long Island Paying Dividends Again The BlueClaws have had pitchers drafted out of Long Island high schools each of the last three seasons, with Ben Brown joining the group this year. Nick Fanti (Happauge High School) in 2017 and Kyle Young (St. Dominic High School) in 2018 are joined by Ben Brown (Ward Melville High School) in 2019.
Brown, a 33rd round pick in the 2017 draft, spent the bulk of the last two seasons with the Gulf Coast Phillies, but has blossomed this year. He threw 13.2 scoreless innings to start his BlueClaws tenure with 20 strikeouts in that stretch.
Ben Brown Edgar Garcia
Ward Melville High School also produced Mets pitcher Steven Matz and 2016 Mets first-round pick Anthony Kay.
From the Shore to the Show
Edgar Garcia, a 2016 BlueClaw, made his big league debut with the Phillies on May 6th, becoming the 90th player to go From the Shore, to the Show. Garcia began the year with Lehigh Valley where he gave up three earned runs in 16.1 innings with 23 strikeouts.
Youth is Served
The BlueClaws are one of the youngest teams in Minor League Baseball. By early May, they had already used 12 players that were 20 years of age or younger. Nine of those 12 were 19 years of age or younger, including a pair of 18 year olds in Luis Garcia and Victor Santos. Garcia, born on October 1, 2000, is the first player to play for the BlueClaws that was not yet born when the team’s logo was unveiled in a downtown Lakewood ceremony on August 27, 2000.
