It can be easy to adopt secure habits and help bring peace of mind that your virtual life is safe. Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a collaboration between the government and the private sector industry to raise awareness about digital security and empower everyone to protect their personal data from digital forms of crime.
While most cybersecurity news reports on massive data breaches and hackers, it can seem overwhelming and feel like you are powerless against it. That’s why Cybersecurity Awareness Month reminds us that there are many ways to keep your data protected and that practicing just a few of the basics can make a huge difference. Let’s take a look at multi-factor authentication and phishing.
Multi-factor authentication is sometimes called two-factor authentication, or two-step authentication, or MFA. No matter what you call it, multi-factor authentication is a cybersecurity measure for an account that requires anyone logging in to prove their identity multiple ways. Most often, you will enter your username, password and then confirm your identity in another way, such as by responding to a text message or with a fingerprint. Multi-factor authentication makes it extremely hard for hackers to access your online accounts, even if they know your password. A best practice is to enable multi-factor authentication for any account that permits it, especially any account associated with banking, email, work, school, and social media.
Phishing is when criminals use fake emails, social media posts, or direct messages with the goal of luring you to click on a bad link or download a malicious attachment. If you click on a phishing link or file, you can hand over your personal information to cybercriminals. A phishing scheme can also install malware onto your device. It is easy to avoid a scam email, but only once you know what to look for. With some knowledge, you can outsmart the phishers every day.
• Does it stress an urgency to click on an unfamiliar hyperlink or attachment?
• Is it a strange or abrupt business request?
• Does the sender’s email address match the company it is coming from? Look for little misspellings like pavpal.com or anazon.com.
• If you recognize a fake email in your inbox, don’t do what it says. Do not click on any links — even the unsubscribe link — or reply back to the email. Just use the delete button. Remember, DON’T CLICK ON SUSPICIOUS LINKS. JUST DELETE IT. You can report suspicious links through Blue’s website at:
October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, but it doesn’t have to be scary!
