Is your Shear built like a Fortress?
As one of the largest and fastest growing metal processors in the UK, Enablelink handle over 250,000 tonnes of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal per year.
Blue Machinery (Southern) recently supplied the company with a brand-new Fortress FS-145R Mobile Shear to help boost productivity and process larger items of scrap. The model is the largest in the Shearcore line-up and is the first supplied by Blue Machinery (Southern).
Weighing in at just over 13 tonne with a jaw opening of 1,092mm, the Fortress FS-145R can process larger material more efficiently. Enablelink’s Managing Director, Roy Millard explains “we recently received a 36-tonne end-of-life JCB excavator into the yard. Previously this would have taken 2-4 men half a day to flame cut this machine up, but with the FS-145R shear we manged to chop up the whole machine in under 20 minutes”.
The FS-145R punches well above its weight class with unmatched power at the tip, jaws built using six-inch single piece solid steel and a huge pivot group to dramatically improve performance and durability.
Enablelink’s new FS-145R has been fitted to a 70 tonne excavator and has certainly been proving its worth within their busy yard. Roy adds “its non-stop here. We have plans to open two more sites in the near future as our business continues to expand. We source in excess of a quarter of a million tonnes per year from a wide range of industries throughout the UK and forward materials ready for the manufacture of new products to a diverse consumer base both domestically and internationally”.
Commenting on the performance of the new shear, Roy says “we like the design of the shear and its smooth performance. It was a significant investment but so far its performance suggests to us that this will pay for itself in no time. The shear is taking everything in its stride thanks to the robust build and design”.
Fortress by Shearcore has become the new world standard for mobile shears used within the demolition and scrap recycling industries. All Fortress mobile shears are designed and manufactured within Exodus Global’s 90,000 square foot facility located in Superior, Wisconsin. The range consists of the FS-25, FS-35, FS-45, FS-55, FS-75, FS-95 and FS-145, suitable for excavators in the 14 to 100 tonne range.
The FS-145’s ‘shark fin’ rear lug design transfers stress in a new and improved method over any previous design in the mobile shear world, which allows higher forces to be distributed over greater mass. It has a razor blade located in the front guide blade making it easier for guide blade shimming. There are tapped blades throughout and rear lugs that run the full length of the shear body creating a superior structure.
Blue Machinery and Murray Plant are the exclusive UK dealers for Shearcore’s Fortress shears. Enablelink have been a longstanding customer for Blue Southern and Roy discussed the relationship between to two companies “The support and service that we get from the team at Blue Southern has been excellent. We have been dealing with them for the last eight years or so, having acquired Fuchs material handlers from them over that time, and we are happy to continue building on that great working relationship. With another two sites being developed, we will undoubtedly need to invest in more equipment in the near future.”

Doppstadt Experience 2023
Hosted at their site in Calbe, Doppstadt held the ‘Doppstadt Experience’ from 13th-15th June.
Day one was a customer experience day where our staff and customers got the chance to drive classic cars through the German hills, which was incorporated into a treasure hunt.
On the second day, we were taken to the factory for a full tour before being given a product demonstration with live working machines and commentary. Once the demos were over, we learnt about the history of Doppstadt in the Doppstadt museum and were taken through some lectures on Doppstadt’s exciting plans for the future. During the evening we attended a farewell party with all the food and drink you could wish for and live entertainment on stage.
A big thank you to Doppstadt for their amazing hospitality and to the customers who joined us on the trip.
As well as attending Plantworx in June, we also travelled to Germany for the ‘Doppstadt Experience’ and to Italy for VTN’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
VTN 50th Anniversary Celebration
On Saturday 24th June, we joined VTN over in Italy for their 50th anniversary celebrations.
The day began with a guided factory tour which highlighted the various stages of production including the initial processing, welding, finishing, painting, warehousing and equipment repair. The festivities continued into the evening with a dinner at the 16th century Villa Curti in Sovizzo where guests were welcomed by stilt walkers and costumed performers, as well as an all-female string quartet. Dinner took place underneath the beautiful arches with over 200 people in attendance. The cake cutting marked the end of the dinner, which included an appearance from Doris Lunardi (co-founder) and her family, accompanied by an evocative video that retraced the company's history, reaffirming the motto "thinking out of the box".
Thank you to VTN for inviting us to join the celebrations. We look forward to working closely with a brand who have been at the forefront of the earthmoving and demolition sectors since 1973.

Coming Soon to the North East!
Blue Machinery (Scotland), in collaboration with Terex Washing Systems, is poised to undertake a significant project in the North East of England for long standing customer, Thompsons of Prudhoe.
Thompsons of Prudhoe, a renowned contractor operating nationwide, excels in demolition, deconstruction, decommissioning, industrial dismantling, asbestos removal, site reclamation, earthmoving, quarrying, contaminated land remediation, and site clearance. In line with their commitment to building a sustainable circular economy, the company is making a substantial investment by incorporating two cuttingedge washing plants.
The first plant, due for installation in October 2023, is an impressive C&D Terex washing plant, incorporating a full ‘Feeder to Filterpress’ solution. Boasting a full loop crushing circuit, the plant is geared to recover an impressive 85% of the water used during the washing process. The facility will effectively operate as Newcastle's sole urban quarry, with an ambitious target to redirect a staggering 300,000 tons of aggregate away from landfills each year, significantly contributing to sustainable waste management.
Following the successful implementation of the first plant, the subsequent build will involve installing a state-of-the-art sand and gravel washing plant in early 2024, further elevating Thompsons of Prudhoe's commitment to sustainable practices. As the project progresses, stay tuned for more updates on these revolutionary washing plants, where the combined expertise of Blue Scotland and Terex Washing Systems promises to drive environmental conservation and promote responsible resource utilisation.
"Adding Value to Materials" with the Leading Attachment Brands
Blue Machinery are proud to supply some of the world’s leading attachment brands and our team of experts are here to ensure that you have the right tool for the job.
Here’s a few examples of how we have helped our customers over the last few months.
ALLU DN 3-17 processing asphalt for MRD Plant
Leicestershire based MRD Plant provide nationwide services into the recycling, construction, quarrying and mining sectors. The company recently purchased an ALLU DN 3-17 VD TS16/32 to work on an asphalt job they had at Mountsorrel Quarry in in Loughborough. MRD were using the Allu bucket to process larger lumps of asphalt down to a size of around 20 mm so that it could be reused.
The TS16/32 specification bucket features a double blade set up which was suitable to produce a product that matched the customers required fragment size.
This set up allows MRD Plant to process around 50-80 tons of recycled asphalt per hour.
The ‘VD’ in the model name stands for ‘variable drum’, which is a new innovation launched by ALLU at the start of 2023. The variable drum, which is available on the DN 3-12 TS and DN 3-17 TS models, enables you to quickly replace an individual drum or fixed TS blades without the need to open the chain box. This significantly reduces the maintenance time required when working on the buckets.
Rammer 9033E working at Eggborough Power Station for DSM Demolition
DSM Demolition, one of the UK’s leading demolition companies, have been working on the demolition of Eggborough Power Station since 2020.
Blue Machinery have supported the project by supplying various bits of equipment along the way. In 2022 we supplied a Fortress FS-95 shear which went onto a high reach excavator and was used to process the steel on the buildings that had been brought down.
Their most recent purchase was a Rammer 9033E breaker. The hydraulic hammer, which is the largest in the Rammer range, was working on a section of the site that was previously used as an inlet/outlet for the pump house and cooling towers. This area is made up entirely of concrete and rebar, with the shallowest area being 18 inches deep. This required a breaker of substantial size to carry out the job.
Machine Operator, Dave Barlow, commented “there are two words that I would use to describe the hammer, efficient and brutal. It gets the job done.”
Xcentric XC9 is a crushing success for Belford Brothers
Based in Stoke-on-Trent, Belford Brothers Skip Hire is a family run business with over 40 years of experience, specialising in both commercial and domestic skip hire. The company were previously using a mobile crusher to crush the hardcore that had been sorted by their recycling plant. However, the crusher was becoming increasingly unreliable and was taking up too much space in the yard. With Belford Brothers having recently taken delivery of a new 13 ton excavator, Blue Machinery (Central) suggested that they use an Xcentric XC9 crusher bucket to process the material. Following the purchase of their new crusher bucket, Belford Brothers can now crush up to 30 tons per hour to keep up with the throughput of their recycling plant. The customer has also benefitted from the fast size change settings for quick and simple adjustments of the output size so that they can meet the required specifications of their buyers. Whilst the reverse crusher feature allows the operator to clear any blockage without having to get out of the cab to remove the blocked items from the bucket.

Bendall Metal Recycling keep their faith in Fuchs as they purchase yet another material handler from Blue Machinery Southern.
Set up back in 1997 by Haydn Bendall, Bendall Metal Recycling is now run by his son Rob and daughter Lucy. Operating from their premises in Lydney, Gloucestershire, the business offers a comprehensive waste management service specialising in metal recycling, purchasing all ferrous and non-ferrous grades.
The company have run Terex Fuchs
The handler is being used to load their shear baler, loading and unloading wagons and general site work, with the operators very happy with the performance and comfort of the machine. State-of-the-art engine technology paired with pioneering hydraulics make the MHL350 one of the fastest and most sensitive loading machines in its class. With an operating weight of up to
quickly and precisely. In addition to its legendary robustness, modern technology and maximum reliability are among the strengths of the machine.
Bendall Metal Recycling have been a longstanding customer for Blue ever since we added Fuchs to our product portfolio back in 2011. We look forward to continuing to work with Rob, Lucy and Bendall Metal Recycling in the future as the Fuchs
FUCHS MHL 420 Tree care handling at its best
Launched at the LIGNA exhibition back in May, the MHL 420 is the new tree care material handler from Terex Fuchs. The new machine impresses with its extreme flexibility and its separate hydraulic circuit, which allows the use of a wide range of forestry attachments. From embankment maintenance using a mulcher, to problem felling using a grab saw, the MHL 420 offers countless application possibilities.
Due to its low weight and compact design, the MHL420 is easy to transport. It is ideal for working in narrow spaces thanks to its small slewing radius. The handler can also work alongside highways and heavily trafficked roads thanks to the machine's options available for road approval.
The MHL 420 excels in tough terrain due to its powerful travel drive, forestry tyres and all-wheel steering. The undercarriage has been specifically designed for difficult and demanding use in forestry. Even at maximum reach, utmost stability is ensured due to the individually controllable extended outrigger and enlarged support plates. The unique Fuchs cab, which can be tilted by 30° and raised hydraulically in infinite stages, has a viewing height of 5.3 m and guarantees perfect visibility, even during tree felling and clearing work. The continuous front windshield, in combination with the enlarged panoramic roof window and the rear and side cameras, ensure the best allround visibility.
The telescopic stick with a maximum reach of 12.8 m provides operators with seamless grab and fell, even for hard-to-reach branches and treetops. The robust loading equipment has been particularly designed for use in tree and landscape maintenance.

Blue help to support continued growth for Macavis Building Supplies
Founded in 2018, Macavis Building Supplies is a family run independent builders merchant supplier to both trade and the public across the South East of England.
The business was set up to run alongside their existing construction company which was suffering from increasing delays from other firms delivering materials onto site. The construction business now works side by side with the building supplies business to become completely self-sufficient.
Based out of their HQ in Dover, the company have grown significantly over the last five years which has led to heavy investment in new equipment over the last 12 months. This investment included a Powerscreen Warrior 1400X screener, Rammer RPV14R pulveriser, OSA GR10 selector grab and DustQuip dust suppression system.
The Warrior 1400X is processing material brought in by the grab hire wagons to remove any concrete and create a topsoil product. The scalping screener is an upgrade from their previous smaller screener. Manging Director at Macavis Building Supplies, John Davis, comments “the new Warrior screener has allowed us to increase our throughput significantly and is also creating a much cleaner product.
We are very happy with its overall performance and low fuel consumption”. The RPV14R pulveriser is being used to process fence posts and any other concrete arriving in that contains rebar. Macavis are using their new GR10 selector grab to sort any incoming demolition and green waste. Whilst the DustQuip jet mister is being used to reduce the dust across the whole yard.
John Davis went on to discuss the company’s recent growth and how Blue Southern have helped support it - “the business has grown from strength to strength in recent years so we felt that it was the right time to pump some money back into the business to update our equipment, ensuring that we are running as efficiently as possible. We have a good relationship with David Williams and Blue Southern, the fact that we can source a lot of our equipment from a single supplier makes the purchasing process a lot more convenient. We have more exciting projects planned and we look forward to continuing to work with Blue in the future”.

Sun shines over a successful first Plantworx
Back in June we exhibited at the Plantworx Construction show as a Group for the very first time. It has been reported that approximately 14,000 visitors attended the show over the three days and we were pleased with the good turnout at another busy exhibition for Blue Machinery.
On the main stand we showcased our industry leading brands and their range of attachments which included breakers, crushing buckets, screening buckets, rippers, shears, pulverisers, grabs, quick couplers and more. We were treated to some glorious sunshine across the three days, so it seemed fitting to keep our visitors cool by setting up a Dustquip dust suppression system to spray mist over the stand!
In addition to the main stand, we also sponsored a challenge in the operator challenge zone hosted by Awesome Earthmovers. Our challenge ‘Pyramid of Tyres’ consisted of a Rammer 777E breaker which had a hook fitted to the end of the chisel. Operators had to use the 777E, which was fitted to a 14 ton excavator, to balance six tyres in the form of a pyramid. The challenge was taken on by hundreds of visiting operators and a host of social media influencers including ‘Conor the Digger Driver’ and ‘Bearded Excavation’.
You may have seen across social media that we were giving away a Rammer breaker at the show, with the winner being able to choose between a 111, 222 and 333. After receiving over 400 entries we drew the winner live on the stand during the last day of the show. Our lucky winner was Ronan Kilroe from Bethell Group who picked a Rammer 222 as his prize. A big thank you to everyone that entered!
Plantworx was our final trade show of 2023 and we now look forward to exhibiting at Scotplant and Hillhead in 2024.
