A strong start to show season

We've had a busy few months of trade shows, exhibiting at both ScotPlant and Hillhead. Both events saw a record turnout of visitors.

In April, at ScotPlant, Blue Scotland proudly announced their partnership with SEMIX by showcasing the Mobile 60S4 concrete batching plant on the stand, generating significant interest over the two days. Alongside the SEMIX plant, Blue Scotland exhibited the new Premiertrak 450 from Powerscreen, the Fuchs MHL 340, and a Doppstadt Inventhor 6. Murray Plant also showcased their extensive range of world leading attachments including Rammer, Allu, Fortress, VTN, Xcentric, OilQuick, and Steelwrist.

Later in June, the sunny Hillhead show drew over 19,500 visitors across three days, marking another successful event for Blue Machinery. At our main stand, we highlighted our leading attachment brands, using both Develon and Hidromek excavators to showcase a VTN FP24 pulveriser and a Rammer 2166E breaker. Additionally, we supported several of our suppliers at their stands. Powerscreen featured the new Premiertrak 450 jaw crusher and the electric Warrior 1400XE scalping screen, along with the debut of the 1300X Maxtrak cone in the live demo area. Other suppliers present included Terex Washing Systems, MDS, Portafill, Develon, and Hidromek.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who visited us at both shows and eagerly anticipate returning to exhibit at both ScotPlant and Hillhead in 2026.

Premiertrak 450 redefines productivity

The Premiertrak 400X has long been one of the world’s best-selling jaw crushers, and Powerscreen has built upon this success with the introduction of the Premiertrak 450. In April, A&L McCrae Limited, based in Argyll, Scotland, received the first Premiertrak 450 sold in Europe.

A&L McCrae Limited, established over fifty years ago, has grown from a single owner-operator into a multifaceted civil engineering firm and quarry operator. The company offers a wide range of services, including contract crushing and screening, heavy plant hire, bulk haulage, ready mix concrete and the supply of high-quality aggregates from their hard rock and sand & gravel quarries. Renowned for reliable service and a commitment to modernising equipment, A&L McCrae ensures they meet the demands of large-scale projects across Scotland.

Previously, A&L McCrae managed with a single crushing and screening train shared between two quarries. However, the company now faces a large volume of material to process over the next five years. The growing demand necessitates dedicated trains for each site to maintain efficiency and productivity, leading to the recent purchases of a Premiertrak 450 jaw crusher and a Chieftain 1700X inclined screener.

The new Premiertrak 450 is a heavy-duty, quarry-specification jaw crusher designed for the toughest rock.

It boasts several improvements over the Premiertrak 400X, including a new hopper design built from 15mm Hardox steel, compared to the 12mm Hardox used in the PT400X. The steeper hydraulic folding hopper sides also increase the capacity to 10.3m³. You won’t find a stronger hopper anywhere else in the market.

The crushing chamber on the Premiertrak 450 has been tilted by 7° to allow better material flow, increasing potential throughput to 450tph. Calum McCrae, Managing Director at A&L McCrae, comments, “We have seen a massive increase in production since the arrival of the new crusher. The redesigned feeder and angle on the chamber have been game changers.”

The Premiertrak 450's highly efficient direct drive system results in lower fuel consumption. Calum has observed significant cost savings, noting, “This machine offers more tonnes for less fuel, with our tonnes crushed per litre rising significantly.”

Calum was first introduced to the machine at the Powerscreen World Dealer Conference in September.

"We have seen a massive increase in production since the arrival of the new crusher. The redesigned feeder and angle on the chamber have been game changers."

“Austin invited us to Italy, where we saw the machine working and immediately knew it was the right fit for us, specially designed to meet the rigorous demands of quarry operations,” he recalls.

Over the past five years, A&L McCrae has worked closely with Blue Machinery (Scotland), replacing their entire crushing and screening fleet with Powerscreen machines. In addition to this Blue Machinery has supplied A&L McCrae with a Terex Wash Plant, two SEMIX concrete batching plants, and various attachments from Murray Plant (a Blue Scotland Company). Calum adds, “We have a very strong working relationship with both the sales team and the service team at Blue Scotland, it’s probably the best backup service we get from any supplier we deal with. I See Blue Scotland as a key business partner in our growth plans in the years to come”.

The acquisition of the Premiertrak 450 marks a significant milestone for A&L McCrae Limited, demonstrating their commitment to operational excellence and efficiency. With this state-of-the-art jaw crusher, the company has significantly boosted its production capacity while reducing fuel consumption. The strong partnership with Blue Machinery (Scotland) has been instrumental in this transition, providing not only world class machinery but also unparalleled support and service.

Inventhor 6.2 goes on tour!

We recently took the brand new Doppstadt INVENTHOR 6.2 slow-speed shredder on a three week long UK roadshow. The shredder visited a total of 15 sites covering all the regions served by Blue Scotland, Blue Central and Blue Southern, to demonstrate its capabilities in processing a wide variety of waste material.

Founded by Werner Doppstadt in 1965 as a company focusing on agricultural equipment and based in Velbert, Doppstadt has evolved to become a leading partner worldwide in the field of environmental technology. The company develops, designs and produces systems and shredding equipment geared for mobile and stationary use and for handling a wide variety of materials like waste wood, household waste, commercial and industrial waste,

The tour of the UK began in Aberdeen in Scotland with EIS Waste Serviced ltd. Neil Sharp, Managing Director commented that he was delighted to have the INVENTHOR 6.2 on demo. He said they were impressed with how it handled different waste streams with ease and were also very impressed with the engineering advancements and its fuel efficiency. “Overall, a very professional demonstration of an excellent machine”.

IFAT is the largest global event for water, sewage, waste and raw materials management, where industry experts from all over the world gather to discuss innovative offers to meet global challenges.

First launched in 2018, the INVENTHOR series has since impressed customers around the world with its performance and flexibility. The launch of the INVENTHOR 6.2, now available from Blue Machinery across the UK, marks further progress in this successful product line.

“We have extended the filling area from 2.2 to 3.3 metres, increasing the hopper volume from five to eight cubic metres,” explained Dominik Niehaus. “Operators can now even move a wide wheel loader bucket down to the shredding teeth. This allows the machine to be loaded optimally and, above all, easily.”

At the heart of the new INVENTHOR 6.2 is the patented VarioDirect Drive system which copes with nearly all kinds of shredding tasks with excellent results. This unique direct drive concept variably transfers the power to the shredding shaft and thus offers completely new options for effective shredding. By doing so, the shaft speed can be flexibly adapted to different shredding tasks.

The material feed system of the INVENTHOR 6.2 ensures that the shredding process goes smoothly. It has a hopper volume of 4.5 m³. The total volume can be extended to approx. 8 m³ using removable hopper extensions. Thanks to the low loading height and a loading width of over 3.3 m, loading with wheel loader buckets is also operator-friendly.

The folding hopper can be loaded and tilted batchwise or it can be set at a suitable angle so the material automatically slides into the shredding area.

In case of overload, automatic mode is disabled in order to protect the machine from any damage. Shredding stops promptly in the event of any problems.

A wide opening comb flap guarantees good and, above all, safe access to the shredding chamber. Thanks to its intelligent hydraulics, the load sensing system adapts the volume flow of the pumps exactly to the required performance.

The system only provides as much hydraulic oil as the machine needs. This precisely metered oil flow reduces your fuel consumption considerably.

Driven by a powerful, highly efficient diesel engine which complies with the EU Stage V emission standard, the INVENTHOR 6.2 is also available with an optional electric drive 315 kW three-phase motor, allowing you to benefit from lower energy and maintenance costs. All necessary modules such as the switch cabinet and frequency converter are built into the machine so that you can connect the INVENTHOR 6.2 "plug and play" to your existing infrastructure.

2024 marks 20 years of partnership between Blue Machinery and Doppstadt. Doppstadt have been one of our core suppliers since 2004 and within the time we have managed to supply over 500 machines to the market. Doppstadt are true innovators and it’s their innovation that has kept the company at the forefront of shredding and screening technology since their inception. We look forward to bringing you more on this special partnership as we continue to celebrate throughout 2024.

Haulaway boosts recovery rates with new recycling plant

Established in 1991, Haulaway Limited has grown into a thriving third-generation family business based in Hailsham, East Sussex.

Led by owner Colin Holloway, his wife Julie, their three children—Lisa (Office Manager), Sam (Operations Manager), Cara (Head of HR) and Steve Walton (Business development Director)—the company has flourished with the support of nearly 50 dedicated staff members.

From humble beginnings with just two skip lorries, Haulaway has expanded its fleet to 21 vehicles, including skip lorries, 8-wheel

tippers, a grab lorry, and a variety of rolonof and articulated vehicles.

The company offers an array of services beyond skip hire, including tipper and grab hire, roll on roll off hire, bulk haulage, cardboard collection, trade waste disposal and a plastic recycling plant.

As Haulaway continues to grow, so does the volume of recyclable material they handle. This increase necessitated the installation of a new

recycling plant to process their Dry Mixed Recycling (DMR) stream. After an extensive tender process, Haulaway selected Blue Machinery (Southern) to install the cutting-edge recycling plant at their Polegate Distribution Facility. Blue Southern assembled some of the world’s leading manufacturers including Westeria, Tomra, BRT Hartner, and M&J to create a stateof-the-art system.

The Process

The process begins with material being fed into an M&J K210 7 Knife shredder. This functions both as a bag opener and shredder, efficiently opening bags but negating the blockages from a mixed feedstock that you get from a traditional bag-opener. The shredded material is perfectly sized at approximately 400mm for the optical sorters used later in the process.

Next, the material travels via a conveyor to the first quality control picking station where contaminants are removed before the main process. The remaining material moves on to a BRT Hartner ballistic separator, which sorts 2D materials from 3D materials and produces a 0-50mm ballistic fines. The 3D material is then passed through an overband magnet to extract ferrous metals before an eddy current system removes non-ferrous metals.

The remaining 3D material proceeds to a second manual picking station where 3D carboard and various grades of plastic are recovered. Concurrently, the 2D material from the ballistic separator is directed to the first Tomra 2800 optical sorter, which removes film from the material.

The remaining material then passes through a second Tomra optical sorter which takes the OCC leaving a mixed paper product as the drop fraction.

↑ Tomra optical sorter Click to watch

The plant has been cleverly reverse engineered meaning that optical sorters can easily be added to the 3D line in the future.

Capable of processing up to 10 tons per hour, the new plant became operational in March, and Haulaway is already seeing significant benefits. Sam Holloway, Operations Manager, commented, "The plant has been running smoothly for a few months now and has significantly increased our material recovery rates from our DMR waste stream."

Haulaway’s close working relationship with Blue Southern has stood the test of time, with the latter having supplied recycling plants and mobile machinery to the customer since the early 2000s.

Sam noted, "During the tender process, we considered various options from different suppliers. Ultimately, our trust in Blue Machinery was the deciding factor. Once we had spoken to Tom Rutherford (Projects and Applications Manager) at Blue Southern, he had sold us on the plant. His knowledge and passion for plant design and build is unmatched.”

Haulaway Limited's commitment to innovation and efficiency continues to drive their success, setting a high standard for recycling and waste management in the industry.

GBRS shifts to high-Speed for boosted efficiency

Back in 2022, we featured Growing Beds Recycling Services (GBRS) and their new Doppstadt Inventhor 9 slow-speed shredder.

However, due to evolving demands, the company has since switched to an AK 565 high-speed shredder and invested in a new Powerscreen Titan 2300 scalping screener. GBRS is a leading recycling centre located in the heart of Bedfordshire. Since 2002, their private organic waste recycling and biomass centre has prided itself on delivering the highest-quality garden waste and wood waste disposal services and recycling solutions to local authorities, organisations and individuals.

Due to an influx of green waste last year, GBRS determined that a high-speed shredder would better meet their needs. This led to the purchase of the Doppstadt AK 565, supplied by Blue Machinery (Central) Ltd. The AK 565, known for its powerful engine and high throughput, features a heavy-duty rotor with free-swinging tools that ensure consistent and reliable shredding performance. Its advanced technology offers precise control over material size, making it suitable for various recycling applications. With user-friendly controls and maintenance-friendly design, the AK 565 enhances operational efficiency and reduces downtime. This shredder is celebrated for its durability, versatility, and high productivity, making it a top choice for recycling and waste management professionals.

Tom Bliss, Operations and Sales Manager at GBRS, commented on the new AK 565, stating, “The smaller final product size on the AK 565 has helped us to decrease the size of our windrows and reduce the amount of compost oversize coming out of the static trommel system.”

In response to increased demand for their topsoil product, GBRS also invested in a Powerscreen Titan 2300 scalping screener. The Titan 2300 is designed to deliver high productivity and exceptional screening capabilities in a variety of applications, including recycling, quarrying, and mining. This versatile screener features a robust, heavy-duty design, ensuring durability and reliable performance even in the toughest environments. The Titan 2300 is equipped with a large screening area and adjustable screen angles, which provide flexibility and efficiency in material separation. GBRS has maintained a strong partnership with Blue Machinery for around 15 years. Tom Bliss remarked,

“Whether it’s parts, servicing, or an upgrade of a machine, it’s never too much for the guys at Blue. We are constantly trying to expand our business, and by leaning on our strong partnerships, like the one we have with Blue Machinery, we will achieve that.” Click to watch
