For every product sold, United By Blue removes one pound of trash from the earth’s oceans and waterways. We’ve picked up over 1 million pounds of trash in the past seven years, and we’re far from done. Since we care quite a bit about what goes into our oceans, we craft our apparel and accessories from the most sustainable materials we can find — and make sure they’re built to last. Did we mention we do the dirty work ourselves? TAKE A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT OUR BIGGEST CLEANUP YET ON P. 18.

In an effort to ease the transition between summer and fall, we ventured up America’s eastern coast to a place where beaches and mountains meet: Acadia National Park, just short of the Canadian border in Maine. We’re yet to find a better way to break in a flannel (or earn a lobster dinner) than scaling one of Acadia’s glacierscraped granite peaks to catch a foggy sunrise over the Atlantic.

HOW TO PICK UP
ONE MILLION POUNDS OF TRASH For every product sold, United By Blue removes one pound of trash from the earth’s oceans and waterways — a mission made possible thanks to our dedicated cleanups team. Here’s an inside look at how we hit the million pound mark, starting with the story of our biggest haul yet.

T H E R E WA S N O E N D I N S I G H T. Tires sprawled across a patch of land in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, and obscured the creek that cut through it. Kelly Offner, United By Blue’s Head of Cleanups, tried to estimate just how many abandoned tires were hers to haul away. But it was like counting jellybeans in a bottomless jar. Her rough estimate: 200,000 pounds worth of rubber. She was off by more than a quarter million. The land wasn’t always this way. But decades ago, people used the space to unload unwanted car parts and other waste. It was never ideal, but it was a more accessible option than driving hours away to dispose of trash properly, or paying a fee to have it removed. Few knew the impact of abandoning trash and tires, which leach chemicals as they break down, along a creek — namely Adams Creek, a waterway that feeds into the Allegheny River, Pittsburgh’s primary water source. This illegal dumping ended years ago when the property was sold, but despite the new owner’s best efforts, most of the trash remained. Kelly stumbled across the site in late 2016 after following a tip from fellow conservation organization Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. As the head of United By Blue’s in-house Cleanups Team, Kelly is tasked with making good on our mission: Picking up a pound of trash from the earth’s oceans and waterways for every product sold. Finding a field of abandoned tires might make that goal seem a little more attainable. But taking on an illegal dumpsite is far from a small undertaking. “The cost of illegal dumping, or tossing out trash where it doesn’t belong, goes beyond the loss in property value or the taxpayer dollars used to clean these sites,” explained Kelly, who leveraged her cleanups savvy to track down expensive hauling equipment and coordinate logistics with the local government. Since Kelly joined United By Blue three years ago, she’s organized just short of one hundred cleanups and personally picked up literal tons of trash. She’s pulled a bag of hand guns out of a river, unearthed a cashed $30,000 check, and (properly) thrown out more pairs of abandoned underwear than she’d like to admit. But nothing quite like the mountain of muddy tires she found in Kittanning. After two months spent scouting the site, obtaining permissions (everything from identifying gas lines to notifying the school district bussing company), sourcing equipment and manpower, and nailing down day-of logistics, Kelly and UBB’s Cleanup Operations Assistant, Cara, arrived on the property. They were met by a gung-ho group of volunteers, including the landowner, all of whom braved
frosty December mornings and missed the last weekend of deer hunting season to lend a hand. The tires were frozen — and heavy — but the group worked diligently to load them into tractor trailers. They filled 17 trucks and three dumpsters. “Each volunteer did the work of three,” Kelly remembers, “Kittanning is a small town with industrious roots and community-first values. We’ve never had a crew quite like them.” At the end of each day, Kelly and Cara returned to the new landowner’s home, where a hot meal and warm beds were waiting. “We were treated like family,” says Kelly.
“Each volunteer did the work of three,” K E L LY O F F N E R , H E A D O F C L E A N U P S Every muddy tire made its way into a tractor trailer, which drove four hours away to be cleaned, processed, and recycled at Mahantango Enterprises Inc. in Liverpool, Pennsylvania. There, they were chipped or shredded to be repurposed as rubber mulch, playground turf, or roads. They also made a dent on the Cleanups Team tally — Kelly and Cara accidentally obliterated their original 200,000 pounds goal. The final count: 631,100 pounds of trash, including tires, scrap metal, and household trash. The Kittanning cleanup brought United By Blue’s total trash count into the 900,000 range. A few months later the team picked up their millionth pound of trash during a local Philadelphia cleanup, just miles from the United By Blue office. For perspective: Picking up 1 million pounds is the equivalent of hauling away 4.5 space shuttles. And it only took seven years, 185 cleanups, and the help of 7,649 volunteers to do it. But the problem persists. Roughly 8 million tons of trash enter our oceans each year. Even in Kittanning, there’s still work to be done: The walls of the creek need to be remediated, and the mowed over land should be restored with new trees and grass. And that doesn’t include the countless illegal dumpsites that exist across the country, particularly in areas where trash pickup is expensive, unreliable, or nonexistent. Kelly and her team have a long to-do list and a knack for picking up trash. There’s no end in sight.
