The Man Behind The Materials We sat down with Senior Apparel Designer, Brendan Rauth, to talk sustainable materials at UBB. Can you talk about the process for selecting sustainable materials at UBB? Material selection is an ever-evolving process, especially as the fashion industry moves forward in terms of sustainability. It involves a combination of reevaluating old fibers that may no longer be considered as sustainable as they once were, and exploring new sustainable options that become available. It’s a continual process, and we’re always finding new research and better resources to benchmark ourselves against.
Are there any materials that you’re particularly excited about this season? An exciting focus for this season is recycled naturals — we used a lot of recycled wool, recycled cashmere, and recycled cotton in our fall and winter line. In general, it always takes less energy and has a lower impact on the environment to reuse something rather than to start from scratch, so it’s been really exciting to leverage the evolving recycling industry and use these fibers in our apparel. Not only do they prolong the life of old textiles, they also break down more easily compared to synthetics when they do reach their end of life.
How have our materials evolved over the life of the company? We’ve certainly improved and evolved in many ways over the years, both in sustainability and our ability to better serve our customers. One example is when I started, the Bison jacket we were selling at the time was around $500. Since then, we’ve not only improved the performance and sustainability of our BisonShield™ insulation, we’ve also lowered the cost significantly. So we’re not just making products more sustainable, we’re also making them more accessible — which is something that I think is especially important. Overall, we’re always evaluating our materials and pushing for better. The place that we are now is definitely more evolved than when I first joined the company, but at the same time I’m already looking ahead and setting even higher standards for the future.
