A letter from our founder
As the UBB team and I prepare for another holiday season, it’s always this time of year that makes me reflect on our “why”. United By Blue was built on the simple vision to be part of the solution to the epidemic of plastic ravaging our world’s blue places. For us, that looks like sustainable products that clean trash from oceans and waterways.
Thanks to your support – whether it’s the recycled backpacks you gift to your loved ones or the organic t-shirts you gift to yourself – we’ve been able to clean over 4.3 million pounds of garbage all over the world. Not to mention the plastic and chemicals we’ve prevented from ever polluting the environment to begin with by using recycled and organic materials.
Behind those big numbers is a small but mighty team that works hard to ensure United By Blue offers the best sustainable products around. We put a lot of heart into everything we make, and we find great joy in getting UBB products out into the wild. So whether it’s your first Responsible Flannel or your tenth pair of Ultimate Bison Socks (we get it), know that when you shop with us you are not only supporting our team, but also a way of doing business that is better for the planet.
Lastly, as the founder of a company and dad to three children, I understand how the holidays can be fun, overwhelming, and wasteful all at the same time – which is why we do our best to make gifting, decorating, and celebrating sustainably as easy as possible. Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift or the little touches that make your home feel like the holidays, you can find them here –and you sure as hell can bet that for every item you buy, we’ll be out there cleaning up a pound of trash.
Wishing you a happy (and clean) holiday season,
BRIAN LINTON FounderGiving (back)season

The millions of pounds of trash we’ve cleaned to date are all thanks to our Cleanups Department: the tiny team that plans and organizes all of our community, high yield, and international cleanups across the globe.
An anti-waste material mindset
From nontoxic, regenerative fibers that keep harmful pesticides out of the environment to recycled fabrics that put existing trash to good use, we do our best to minimize waste from the get go.
No dirty business
Globally-scaled, company-led cleanups We work on a slow fashion timeline to avoid waste and overproduction, and our manufacturing partners hold some of the highest certifications in social and environmental health.
clean freaks
We believe that businesses not only have the ability to be part of environmental solutions, but a moral responsibility to address them. Our third party certifications help us give back and progress forward.

As we wrap up our community cleanup season - the months where we head out across the country to meet up with customers and volunteers and help clean their local waterways – there’s so much good news to share. This year, we hosted 19 community cleanups, donated to 27 nonprofits, and collaborated with over 900 volunteers to clean nearly 20,000 pounds of trash from waterways and coastlines.
When we weren’t driving a van of cleanup supplies around the country (maybe you saw us on I-80?), we were executing high yield cleanup projects and managing international cleanups with the support of our partners, Sungai Watch and Plastic Bank – resulting in the removal of 631,902 pounds of trash this year to date. And we already have our sights on some huge projects like tire dumps in rivers, lost-at-sea fishing gear, and illegal coastline dumpsites to help us clean hundreds of thousands of pounds more by the year’s end.
2022 saw UBB’s first Climate Neutral certification, and our first formal implementation of a Supplier Code of Conduct. After 5 years of running cleanups at United By Blue, I also had my most poignant moment of my career this year: while on a cleanup targeting dumped fishing gear, we received a call about an entangled whale in the very trash we were there to remove. It was a full circle and very emotional moment for me, and I was reminded firsthand how important the work we do is.
“every year I get excited about offering sustainable alternatives to wasteful holiday consumerism”
A letter from our Director of Sustainability
As we prep for the busy holiday season, every year I get excited about offering sustainable alternatives to wasteful holiday consumerism. Our plastic-free packaging is waiting patiently for your holiday orders, and we worked hard to ensure our materials and manufacturing standards are the best they’ve ever been. It’s a whole-company effort – and something I’m so glad to be a part of.
From our team to yours, I wish you and your family a joyous and low-waste holiday season. Thank you for another great year of cleanups, sustainability, and community.
