Nora McFarland's mission was to create a safe, hospitable place for children to become entrepreneurs. “Inspiration,” answered the executive director of the Brevard Children’s Business Fair when asked why she started the Brevard Children’s Business Fair. McFarland laments that children could once set up a lemonade stand, but times have since changed. The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 30 at The Avenue Viera. In its second year, the fair has doubled in size. “We have 50 businesses with 67 participants,” McFarland said. vendors and crafters and artisans. Ella Bella’s Beads will be one of the featured businesses. Run by Ella Helton, 6, of Viera, she simply stated, “we make bracelets.” “Ella started making plastic bead bracelets for her dolls and stuffed animals. It transformed into a business when my boss asked Ella if she could make her a bracelet that says “Type 1” on it because she’s diabetic,” said Lee Nessel, Ella’s mother. The bracelets have evolved from plastic bead bracelets since then. Now, they are made of stones, wood and crystals. “I’m making bracelets so I can have enough money. I want to get a dog, a cat and a chinchilla,” Ella Helton said. The McMullin sisters of Suntree also will show off

28 North Gastropub has it all for fine dining, casual atmosphere BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL Seated in the heart of The Avenue Viera, 28 North Gastropub is a new and fresh aspect for diners looking for an experience. 28 North started establishing itself at The Avenue Viera in May 2018, and opened its doors last December. The founder and CEO is Chris Conneen, who also owns Pizza Gallery & Grill, located directly adjacent to 28 North. “I love what The Viera
Company has done,” Conneen said. “I love the growth that’s happening out here, and obviously the proximity to Pizza Gallery & Grill is a no-brainer for me to manage and be right next door to our operation. The growth here is supportive of what we’re bringing from a culinary place and from a different, urban-y atmosphere. I think Viera is ready for it.” 28 North certainly brings a fresh take on traditional dining, with a plethora of unique and interesting dishes VIERA VOICE Austin Rushnell

The current menu offers items such as a charcuterie board featuring locallysourced jam, bread, meats and pâtés; a short-rib entrée of Congaree & Penn grits, aged cheddar, and gremolata; and for the traditionalist, a ‘B.A.B’ burger, made with rotating styles of ground beef. “The one comment that I am getting consistently is that ‘Viera needed this,’ or ‘Brevard needed this,’ ” Conneen said. “I’m like, ‘wow.’ It’s almost every table I go to (someone says), ‘we so needed this.’ I don’t know what it is, (whether) it’s the city-feel, or urban-feel, (or otherwise).” The chef in the kitchen is Kyle Hash, who prides himself on making chefquality food, for an incredible dining experience.

It was a chili lover’s dream at The Avenue Viera on Feb. 16 as the third annual Brevard County Professional Firefighters' Chili Cook-Off was held in the shopping center’s Central Park. Proceeds from the event, which also included a raffle, benefits both the Brevard County Firefighters Benevolent Association and Driven By Heart, a local nonprofit supporting those with breast cancer in and around the Melbourne area. There were 16 different kinds of chili, prepared mostly by Brevard County Fire Rescue personnel. There was at least one entry from the Rockledge Fire Department, according to event coordinator Christy Fleming, who indicated there were a number of different types of chili.

Jeff Kozub poses by his buffalo chicken blue cheese chili, which won the award for being the most unique chili at the third annual Brevard County Professional Firefighters' Chili Cook-Off that was held at The Avenue Viera on Feb. 16.
“There was one that I tried that it zings you right when it first gets to you and then it mellows out into a perfect-like good chili taste.” — Christy Fleming on that makes it spicier. So, some of them will send you for a loop.” Brevard County Fire Rescue Chief Mark Schollmeyer noted that there was a wide array of chili at the event as well. “This year, as opposed to the other two years, there’s a huge variety,” BCFR Chief Mark Schollmeyer said. “There’s spicy ones, there’s a lot of smoked meat chilis, some really good white chilis. So, it runs the gamut from traditional to creative.” At the end of the day,
winners in five categories were announced with Brevard County Fire Rescue firefighters taking home awards. They included: • Jeff Kozub (Most unique chili) • Chad Cawby (Best white chili) • Juan Navarez (Best red chili) • Dave Lincoln (People’s choice); and • Shayna Kirkpatrick (Overall winner) “It’s super easy. I just put it in the crockpot for like eight hours,” said Kirkpatrick, who is based out of BCFR Station 26 in Port St. John and who made Mexican chicken chili. “It’s actually something that we eat all the time at the station when we have training.” It was clear as to why Kozub won his award. “It’s buffalo chicken blue cheese chili,” Kozub said of what he prepared. “I’ve kind of been making it, developing it over the past five years. It’s pretty much a work in progress type of thing.” VV

Young Eagles soar over Brevard County with local pilots BY CHRIS BONANNO Experienced pilots helped young boys and girls to soar above Brevard County as part of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Young Eagles program. Children ages 8 to 17 took
advantage of an opportunity to fly Jan. 26 as part of the Merritt Island Airport-based EAA Chapter 724. “They’re giving the kids a flight,” said Bobbi Lasher, the EAA Chapter 724 secretary. “It’s 20 to 30 minutes. They’re explaining to the kids a little bit about what’s going on,
why the plane is flying ‘cause it’s heavier than air and answering any questions the kids have.” The program is conducted from the airport three times a year, according to Young Eagles coordinator Don White. About 165 children signed up for the event.

“We’ve been doing this for the last 26 years and we’ve flown almost 8,000 kids locally,’’ White said. “This is a national program and the national program has flown about 2.1 million kids over the last 25 years.” Among those who flew during the event on Merritt Island was Todd Leiss, who has been a pilot since 1972 and has been with the program for six years. “I love doing it. Golf carts banned at new I-95, Viera Boulevard interchange BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL As the construction for the new I-95 and Viera Boulevard interchange is finishing up, an ordinance that was established in 2016 will soon become prominent. This ordinance places a ban on all golf carts within the immediate area of the interchange, effectively preventing golf carts from crossing the east and west Viera areas via Viera Boulevard. The ordinance in question is the Board of County Commissioners Ordinance No. 2016-22, Sec. 106-73 (b) (f): “[...] Notwithstanding any other definitions of this ordinance; no portion of a street, road, multi-use sidewalk or trail within the I-95/Viera Boulevard interchange shall be designated for golf cart usage.” In the past, tickets already have been issued by local police to golf cart users. With the completion of the interchange, golf cart users attempting to illegally cross the interchange should be aware of an increased police
VIERA VOICE Adam Rushnell
Construction at the intersection of I-95 and Viera Boulevard is nearly finished. People that drive golf carts will have to learn county ordinances, which dictate where they can drive the carts. presence. Viera East Golf Club General Manager and Viera resident Tim Melloh expressed concerns about the situation. “The golf cart ban has been ongoing; it’s not anything new,” Melloh
said. “Even before they started construction (at the intersection), people have been written tickets. “At the golf course at Viera East, we have a lot of people from the west side that drive over the bridge to come here and play golf. There are (also)
a lot of people that live on the east side of that bridge that drive over. And, a lot of the kids drive to Viera High School.” According to Melloh, outside of Viera High School, there are a few hundred golf carts parked outside.
That means that many local students are going to school via an illegal intersection. “Now that they’re going to have the interchange there and now that they’re going to have cars coming on and off I-95, there’s going to be a lot more police presence there to ensure everyone navigates through there safely,” Melloh said. With the approaching expanded police presence, the community needs to be aware of local laws and ordinances. What makes this ban especially difficult, however, is the fact that there are no major golf cart-friendly routes from East Viera to West Viera. This means that golf cart users will have to either walk, drive or cycle across the I-95/ Viera Boulevard intersection in order to cross without penalty. The ordinance can be found at the Central Viera Community Association’s website at cvcaviera.com/wpcontent/uploads/2017/03/BCOrdinance-2016-22-Golf-Carts. pdf. VV

In February, Viera commuters tested out a modified version of the new diverging diamond interchange (DDI) at Viera Boulevard and Interstate 95. Although the DDI will not be fully operational until sometime in June 2019, a single lane crisscross pattern is now in use. The diverted lanes currently are operational only for the overpass portion of the future interchange. Ramps will not be completed for several months. “This is the region’s first diverging diamond interchange, where traffic crosses to the left side of the road to safely navigate through the I-95 overpass,” said Jessica Ottaviano, a communication specialist for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The diverging diamond

design provides for a more efficient flow of traffic through intersections by allowing continuous navigation. East- and westbound traffic is temporarily diverted from the right
including cart
to the left side of Viera Boulevard in a crisscross pattern. Concurrently, interstate traffic enters or exits with a slight curve. “This is expected to increase mobility and safety for drivers that are exiting and entering I-95,” said Ottaviano, “as well as relieve interchange congestion at Fiske Boulevard to the north and Wickham Road to the south.” According to studies completed by the FDOT, diverging diamond interchanges provide for increased safety since there are fewer conflicts between east- and west-bound traffic. The DDI design eliminates left-hand turns that face approaching traffic. The Wickham Road and Fiske Boulevard exits currently become very congested during peak hours, creating safety issues and adding to commute times
for drivers. With Viera’s projected population of 60,000, the new exit will be a welcome addition for current and future residents and businesses. The modified DDI gives Viera motorists a chance to adapt to the diamond configuration during the months prior to the final stages of the project. “Dates could change, but this is the way things look now,” Ottaviano said. The Viera Boulevard bridge above Interstate 95 first opened to traffic in 2007, when development in West Viera was just getting started. During the past decade, a building boom in Viera has led to more increased traffic. The state has contributed $17 million for construction, while the Viera Company has contributed $2.5 million, according to the FDOT. “The project is a

partnership between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Viera Corporation where the FDOT funded construction, and the developer covered various aspects of right of way, design and environmental study,” Ottaviano said. The Viera diverging diamond is one of two such projects in Brevard County. A DDI also is under construction at Interstate 95 and St. Johns Heritage Parkway, north of Micco Road in Palm Bay. The current estimated completion is later this year in the fall. For a simulation of the completed DDI, go to vieravoice.com. Drivers should keep in mind that any diagrams or videos provided are an estimation of the completed project and might not be an exact replica. VV
VIERA VOICE Austin Rushnell
The current adjustment phase for Viera drivers should provide for a smooth transition to the diverging diamond interchange. There might be some delays until the final phase of the DDI project is complete. The modified version of the future DDI diverts traffic into a single lane.

Hawks eager to get back into state softball chase BY CARL KOTALA They may have made program history by reaching the state final four last season, but to be honest, the Viera High School softball team had bigger plans. And this season, they’re even more motivated than ever. “We’ve made it painfully clear to them that the way last year ended was not good enough,” Hawks coach Alex Breeden said. “That’s not what our goal was. Honestly, (we have) the mentality that last year wasn’t an end and this year is just a continuation of that same goal, which is to win state. “We didn’t accomplish that last year, so it’s the same goal VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala this year. They’re really smart and they have pretty good game IQs so they pick up on stuff pretty quickly.” The Hawks went 26-2 last year, reaching the Class 7A state final four for the first time in program history before eventually losing to Niceville. Time to pick up where they left off. “It was kind of bittersweet if anything, because we want the championship so bad,” Flajole said. “I feel like we want it even more than they did before. Young baseball team building strong foundation BY CARL KOTALA Before any program can become a success story, it has to build a strong foundation first. And for the Holy Trinity baseball team, this could be that year. With three seniors and eight underclassmen, the Tigers might not be long on experience, but they believe they have the pieces in place to build for long-term success. “We are very young,” Tigers coach Tom Kelce said. “I’m looking forward to this year as a coaching year, putting a lot of (emphasis) on coaching. I think this year, showing them how to do things, like having a (good) plate appearance or a good approach at the plate … obviously, that’s going to pay off next year and the following year. “We’re going to have a strong team in a couple of years. This is our foundation that we’re building right now. I’m very excited to have some full-out coaching with the great coaches we have. Very excited.” While it’s clear the Tigers have a bright future, their present isn’t looking too bad, either. In addition to senior
outfielders Pranay Raman and Joey Mel, the Tigers recently got another new addition to the roster when senior Dru Nickson — a decorated basketball and football player — decided to come out for baseball. Nickson will initially get a chance to play shortstop while Raman and Mel are both outfielders who can also pitch. Sophomore Cole Teply should be the Tigers’ No. 1 pitcher and their No. 1 power hitter. Junior lefty Pedro Gonzalez will be the No. 2 pitcher. Other Tigers with varsity experience are infielder Cal Rethwisch and Cole Hewatt, who will take on a bigger role after playing a little outfield and doing some pitching last year. “We definitely know each other well enough to know how we play, our strengths and weaknesses,” Raman said. “We can all adjust to that. “… It’s definitely fun to see how the program has grown over the last two years. I’m definitely excited to see what we can do this year.” Mel, who transferred from Titusville to Holy Trinity for his senior year, said he has been impressed with the young talent.

Holy Trinity seniors Joey Mel, left, and Pranay Raman will lead a group of younger players that have a lot of potential this season.
While the offense will rely more on making contact than hitting home runs, the speedy Tigers will be a threat on the bases and are concentrating on playing strong defense. “I think we can make districts,” Kelce said. “I want to start building that winning
(foundation), winning one game after another. We get one, let’s get two. We get two, we get three and we’re happy. “I feel strongly that these kids want to play baseball. They’re good. They’re intelligent. We hit the ball. We play defense. We’ll be very competitive.” VV

Viera baseball has plenty of offense, depth BY CARL KOTALA On a team loaded with seven seniors, the Viera High baseball team certainly isn’t lacking for motivation this season. Take senior captains Andrew “Bammer” Brait and Connor Leary. “It’s our last year we’re going to be playing together,” Brait said. “We’ve played together since we were 11. We really want to win.” While the Hawks certainly have plenty of veteran leadership this season, they will also have a lot of depth … and a potent offense to go with it. Brait will once again be at shortstop, but Leary will miss the early part of the season recovering from an injury. In his place will likely be true freshman Edian Espinal, who already is turning heads with his defensive play. Brady Janssen, who played third base last season, could move to first base where he would share time with Liam Samuels and Bill Moser. Third base would then go to Zach Taylor or Ethan Huffman.
The outfield candidates include Aiden Davis, Joe Veltri, Luke Brown, Jake Vermeire, JT Smith and Carson Janssen. Starting at catcher will be Alan Espinal or Declan McDermott. “We’ve got to put our best nine guys out there defensively, but our priority is definitely going to be swinging the stick,” Hawks coach Bob Doty said. “We’ve got a chance to be really good offensively if we can really lengthen that lineup out.” Scoring runs likely won’t be a problem for the Hawks this season. BY CARL KOTALA If things go the way the Holy Trinity girls softball team believes they will this season, the rest of their district — and opposing pitchers — should be on notice. “I personally think we’ll be a little stronger than we were last year,” Tigers coach John Clarson said. “Maybe not in the pitching area, but offensively … I’ve got four or five girls who can hit the ball over the fence. They’re doing it now in practice, and I’ve seen them do it in travel ball games as well.” The Tigers have a nice mix of young, but experienced players along with a couple of newcomers who also could have an impact. This year’s team is not only big on power, but also on versatility. Seniors Lisa Bain and Olivia Nimmo can both catch or play in the infield. Sophomore pitcher Shea Dimmer, now in her third year on Holy Trinity’s varsity team, also can play first base. Claire Jackering also will see time at first, while Cali Perillo, Grace Rush and Bella Tomasura could all see time at second base. Slick fielding Allie Turner is back at short along with Nadia English. Both also can play third along with Perillo. The outfield has veterans Sarah Kimmerling, Anaya Lopez, Tomasura, Adiya McDougle and Jordan Blair. “I try to build versatile teams so, in the event I have injuries, I can throw

somebody in there I know has been practicing there,” Clarson said. Perillo, a seventh grader, also will pitch, while another seventh-grade newcomer — Jenna Turner — will get some time in the outfield. Bain said she liked that the Tigers have so many young, talented players because it means the team will continue to build for the future. But as the two seniors on the team, Bain and Nimmo are determined to make their last year of high school softball one to remember. “It’s going to motivate us a lot since it’s our last year as seniors,” Nimmo said. “We’re going to work hard to get further than we did last year.” Coming off a district title game appearance and a spot in the Class 5A regional

confident it can get back to the postseason once again. “Honestly, I want to make it the best season that they’ve had, and one of Holy Trinity’s best seasons so far,” Dimmer said. “I’m hoping we make it far this year, even for some of the past graduates like Talia (Douglas) and Allison (Roach).” VV

Quest Elementary, Viera High partner for mentorship program BY CARL KOTALA A new mentorship program that pairs students from Quest Elementary School and Viera High School could have a big impact on some future Hawks. The partnership between the two schools began late last month. Quest school counselor Christi Barton, who helped run a similar program while at Croton Elementary, said the program — known as Hangin’ with the Hawks — is designed to help students who might need to “build a little confidence, or they might not quite feel that they fit in.” Between 16 and 18 Quest students in fourth grade to sixth grade are expected to take part in the program, which meets once a week for 30 minutes before school begins. They can play games with their mentors, or simply
sit and talk. The idea being, of course, that it will be easier for them to open up to someone closer to their own age. “We worked with staff to select the students that we thought would benefit most from having a slightly older peer role model,” said Beth Cooper, another Quest school counselor. “The group is specifically tailored to the students who we felt could benefit most from that relationship. “… It’s a super powerful relationship. Our students don’t see them as adults.” Though the program had not yet started by press time, it already was generating a buzz around the campus of both schools. “I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from the teachers. They’re excited because they’ve never had something like that at Quest,” Barton said. “They’re very positive
and hopeful that we can spread it and grow it, help give our kids a sense of belonging.” The partnership between Quest and Viera seemed only natural given that many Quest students will eventually move on to Viera High. Barton credited Quest principal Christy Boyd with coming up with the idea for the mentorship program and Viera assistant principal and Dean of Students Theresa Benson for helping identify 18 juniors and seniors to help serve as mentors. “Theresa has a heart for elementary students,” Barton said. “Her background is in that area. I found the perfect person to (partner with). She went and advertised to juniors and seniors at Viera, met with them individually to explain how valuable being a mentor is to a young child. “She even had them fill out personality things, goals, so
we could really pair up our students with hers and get the personality traits that would be the most positive together.” While Quest teachers and administrators are excited about the potential impact of the program, Benson is equally enthusiastic about what the experience will be like for the mentors from Viera High. “The Hangin' with the Hawks Mentor Program gives our students at VHS an opportunity to give back to the community as strong, positive leaders for our future Hawks at Quest Elementary,” Benson wrote in an email. “Part of the mentors’ commitment will be to lend a supportive ear, share smiles, school experiences and help in ways so that our younger students can build confidence for success. “Our mentors were recommended by their
teachers because of the positive leadership qualities they demonstrate every day. We are excited to build these bridges and make positive connections in our school community. I am so proud to be a part of this partnership with Quest Elementary.” After going through an orientation session, Viera High senior Quez Menyfield said he was looking forward to the start of the program. “I feel like I’m giving back to the community and helping kids through a positive way of communication,” he said. “I think getting to know these kids, and knowing that I’m making a difference in their lives, is a great reward. “Our first day meeting with the kids is (Feb. 20). I’m ready to get started. I would’ve taken full advantage of this opportunity if I had it as a kid growing up so I hope that we can make a difference!”. VV

Viera students impressive at annual Brevard science fair BY CHRIS BONANNO Area high school students excelled at the Brevard Mainland Regional Science & Engineering Fair held Feb. 1 and 2 at Merritt Square Mall on Merritt Island. The fair featured 275 students, according to spokesperson Loren Kingsley. Those students, who represented a host of middle and high schools in the area, competed for place awards in different categories and were eligible to receive special awards that even included scholarship money in some cases. “We have 13 first-place winners at the junior level, which is middle school. And also 13 first-place winners at the senior level, which is high school, that all go on to state. So, 26 projects will go to state (the State Science & Engineering Fair held in
March in Lakeland) from here. And then, our senior level Best of Show in the physical sciences and Best of Show in the biological sciences. So, that’s two projects (that) will automatically go on to international (the International Science & Engineering Fair held in May in Phoenix). Viera High School had an impressive showing as all 15 students who entered the fair with projects earned at least third-place awards. Additionally, VHS students took home first-place awards in six categories, giving them the most of any school in the senior category at the fair, which consists of students in grades nine through 12. Among those who represented VHS was Tyler Audino, who earned runnerup Best of Show honors in the biological category and earned first-place in Sr. Biomedical & Health Sciences

for his project entitled “Hormone Replacement Therapy — Year 2.” “I started off because my Grandpa got diagnosed with cancer and I really wanted to focus on helping prevent cancer or treat cancer, something like that,” said Audino, who as a freshman said he’d like to continue his work on the project. Also earning a first-place award was Viera High’s Jillian Smith, also a freshman, who took the top spot in Sr. Plant Sciences entitled “Can the Indian River Lagoon Muck be Mixed Evenly with the Soil and Fertilizer in Order to Support Plant Life?” “I just saw that algae (in the Indian River Lagoon) was one of the issues, one of the very big issues that we’re having like red tide and I thought, OK, what can I do?,” Smith said. VHS students receiving secondplace awards were Siddarth Ranganath, Chase Tarrillo, Marleigh Peters, Tristan Hera and Colin Avento. Dax Haskett, Mason Harris and Alyssa Buccieri each received third-place awards. Viera High School science research teacher Elizabeth Youngs credited the work ethic of her students when discussing their success at the fair. “If a student comes
into research and isn’t self-motivated, they’re not going to do well. It’s not my project,” Youngs said. “They have to own their project. They have to be enthusiastic about it and for some reason it all falls together.” Viera High School wasn’t the only area school that had students earn awards. Viera Charter School’s Riley and Reese Renfro took second-place in Jr. Behavioral Sciences. Beyond that, Alexa Adams received a thirdplace award in Jr. Physics & Astronomy and Jason Lee took home a fourth-place award in Jr. Chemistry. VV

Viera Charter School 4th graders pledge to help classmate deal with rare disease BY ERNEST ARICO For the 125 fourth graders at the Viera Charter School, learning about a rare and incurable disease can be a terrifying experience. But when the students learned that one of their classmates suffers from the disease, the experience has a whole different meaning. Jenna Gathercole, a 9-year-old fourth grader at the school, suffers from an autoimmune disorder called alopecia. Alopecia areata, also known as spot baldness, is characterized by the sudden appearance of round or oval patches of hair loss. The patches are slick or smooth, without scaling or broken hairs. About 25 percent of children also have pitting and ridging of the nails. While there is no cure for alopecia areata, treatment can control the disease in some children. However, there also is the possibility that the person suffering from alopecia will go completely bald. According to dermatologists, a person can lose up to 100 hairs from their scalp every day. That’s normal, and in most people, those hairs can grow back. But many men and women, lose hair as they grow older. You can also lose your hair if you have certain diseases, such as thyroid problems, diabetes or lupus. If you take certain medicines or have chemotherapy treatments for cancer, you also might lose your hair. Other causes of hair loss include stress, a low protein diet, family history or poor nutrition. Doctors report that treatment for hair loss depends on the cause. In some cases, treating the

underlying cause will correct the problem. Other treatments include medicines and hair restoration. In Jenna’s case, there is no cure, only treatments that can slow down the process. “I don’t really remember when I first had it,” Jenna said. “But I’m dealing with it now. Having no hair is OK and I’m confident that it won’t get in my way or stop me from doing something I want to do.” Karen Gathercole, Jenna’s mother, said her daughter was diagnosed with the disease when she was 3 years old. “We’ve gone through three or four outbreaks since February 2018,” she explained. “The worst was in August 2018 when the loss of hair was very, very rapid.” Jenna’s dermatologist
recommended steroid treatments to slow down the hair loss. So far, some of side effects from the treatment include excessive eating and
trouble sleeping. “Luckily she hasn’t suffered any mood swings or excessive weight,” Karen said. Boys have an easier time
adjusting to the disease because they can shave their heads and wear baseball caps, Karen explained. “With girls, it’s different. It hits their self esteem.” One of Jenna’s biggest supporters is her 14-yearold sister, Ellie, a freshman at Viera High School. “She has been very protective of Jenna,” Karen said. “She keeps an eye on kids that may bully her.” One of the issues that concerns Jenna, her parents, teachers and administrators is the bullying that can come with the stigma of being different — in this case suffering from an incurable disease that changes your appearance. “A lot of people bully,” Jenna said. “It’s not OK to stand around and watch or do it yourself. Everyone has a story and sometimes they can’t control what is going on. What matters about people is what’s on the inside not on the outside. If you are

Respect proves to be the key to SRO’s job at Quest Elementary BY ERNEST ARICO

I wanted to follow my mom and was aiming for a military police career.” Unfortunately, Chamberland injured his back in a training exercise and had to leave the Marine Corps after a year of service. Back home, Chamberland decided to return to Eastern Florida State College and enroll in the school’s police academy. Following his graduation from the police academy in January 2016, he was hired three months later by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol deputy. He was stationed in the department’s West Precinct, which covers parts of Melbourne, Rockledge and Cocoa. Earlier this year, Chamberland was named Quest Elemetary School’s
If Cpl. Peter Chamberland had to pick one song that sums up his goal as school resource officer at Quest Elementary School in Viera, it would be “Respect” by the late Aretha Franklin. “I definitely learned a lot about respect from my mother and father,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for authority and civilians. I think it is very important to show each other respect.” Born in Cocoa, Chamberland was homeschooled until 2005. He then attended Brevard Community College (now Eastern Florida State College) but left before completing his studies. He decided to join the U.S. Marine Corps in 2010. “It (the military) was always something I wanted to do,” he said. “My mom

things you hear about youths and police. I want to have a positive influence on the kids here at Quest.” At Quest, Chamberland is responsible for the safety and security of 1,125 students, teachers, staff and administrators. “It’s a fantastic school,” he said. “The kids are great. There are a lot of positive things going on in the school.” Chamberland also said Quest Elementary is a very secure school. “Everyone is on the same page to make Quest a safe and secure place,” he said. “We hold meetings with faculty and staff. I’m very happy with the situation.” One of the areas that Chamberland is
concentrating on is bullying. “I definitely have to get to know the kids better,” he continued. “I need to learn from teachers who the bullies are because I want to keep kids safe from physical harm and emotional harm. That’s why respect is so important to me. You have to earn the respect from kids and then they will respect you and your job.” Although he has been at Quest Elementary for less than a month, Chamberland says he has gotten good advice and feedback from other school resource officers in the county.

New businesses seeking to ourish in fast-growing Suntree Viera BY A STIN R SHNELL
It’s always exciting to see new businesses cropping up in your area, and here in Viera there are a few new businesses looking to share their stories. First on the list is Nini’s Cuban Cuisine. If there’s one thing that South Florida does best, it’s good Cuban food, and Nini’s Cuban Cuisine is one of the best in town. Nini’s original café opened in Indialantic two years ago, and currently offers authentic Cuban food such as Cuban sandwiches, pan con lechón, fricase de pollo and milanesa de carne. “Nini was my husband’s grandmother. That was the nickname that he gave to her,” said owner Carla Morales. “He loves his grandma very much. Since he was a little boy, he was always was in her kitchen,
about our menu is that our flavors are very traditional, but presented in the (style of) today. Cuban food over the years has been very mistreated. Cuban is very complex preparation-wise, so we are very proud to say that most of our dishes are homemade. We have taken our time, and we have put so much love into our food.” Nini’s currently is hiring at its new venue in Viera,
located at 7640 North Wickham Road. For more information about Nini’s new venue in Viera, call 321-821-4928. Another new business in Viera is an in-vitro fertility clinic, IVFMD. The facility opened in December 2018 and held a ribboncutting ceremony on Feb.

isconsin-based Culver’s hopes to open at the end of May BY CHRIS BONANNO Viera will soon be home to a new Culver’s restaurant. The franchise’s facility, according to Paul Pitas, the director of public relations and communications with Culver’s, will be located at 6451 Lake Andrew Drive near the intersection with Judge Fran Jamieson Way. The Wisconsin-based eatery currently is under construction with a tentative date set for the restaurant to open at the “end of May,” according to owner Lisa Teays Walmuller. It will encompass “almost 4,500 square feet,” she added. “For people that aren’t familiar with Culver’s, we’re famous for our butterburgers and our fresh custard that’s made in the restaurant, fresh every two hours. Beyond that, we have a very extensive menu,” Walmuller said. “Your food is made fresh for you when you order it. Nothing is put on the grill ’til you order it. Nothing sits under a warmer, and it’s 100 percent beef that’s fresh, never frozen.” Walmuller also referred

Walmuller said. She added that the restaurant’s staff would be comprised of “anywhere from 70 to 80 people,” and that the hiring process for managers began in February. After spending the past 20 years working in execu-
tive-level human resources, Walmuller wanted to change career paths, she said. “I was looking for something to invest in and kind of make a career change at the same time, just something different. I was kind of looking into some possibilities, and the first thing that came to my mind to invest in was Culver’s. Because I’m from Wisconsin
— I grew up in Wisconsin.” Walmuller said that Viera stood out as she looked for places to build. “I was looking for somewhere to buy land and I came across Viera and I just fell in love with the town,” said Walmuller, who added that she will be relocating to Viera from Port St. Lucie. “It’s a quaint town, very beautiful.” VV

their wares at the fair. A fourth grader at Suntree Elementary, Ivy McMullin will host a booth called Magical Mixed Media, according to her mother im roflich. “She does string art and quilling.” “You use really thin pieces of paper and use a tool to twist them,” Ivy McMullin said. “They become spirals. You can glue them or frame them and pinch the edges into different shapes. I drew a skull and used different shapes to make it look like a sugar skull, kind of like a Day of the Dead decoration. Ivy’s older sister, Ella McMullin, a 10th grader at West Shore, will show off her wares at her booth entitled Ella’s Emporium. Ella makes knotted friendship bracelets and key chains. “In chorus last year when we weren’t doing much, we would get string and make bracelets using simple square knots,” Ella McMullin said. “We used lots of different colors, especially school colors. Some of the bracelets have beads with the school colors, too.” “There is also another bracelet that is a little more difficult to make. sing square knots, you make four on a string. You use a skinnier string so it takes more time. The pattern is diagonal and you can use more colors.” For information, go to brevardcbf.org.

Clergy from the Suntree church at 7550 North Wickham Road will administer ashes to the foreheads of the faithful who drive up from 7 until 9 a.m. and then again from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. The Melbourne Beach campus of Advent Lutheran Church will offer Ashes and a Prayer from 7 to 9 a.m. at the 1805 Oak St. location. The patient has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and chronic knee pain for years. “1 have been suffering with my knees for many years. The last two years I found I was walking less and less. The simple tasks were a burden. The pain was continuous. My husband studied about the stem cell procedure and we decided that this was what I was meant to try. Much prayers and consideration went into this decision. The results have been amazing. My mobility came as soon as the procedure was finished. I am walking without pain. My sleep is not interrupted for the first time in many years. Stem cell therapy has been the answer I was looking for! Thank you so much Dr. Kobobel!” —Delia B.

IRCC residents share opinions with Fo & Friends BY A STIN R SHNELL
VIERA VOICE Austin Rushnell
Todd Piro of Fox & Friends came to the Indian River Colony Club to discuss President Donald Trump's State of the Union address.
A Fox News correspondent recently visited the Indian River Colony Club (IRCC) in Viera. On Wednesday, Feb. 6, Todd Piro of the Fox News segment “Fox & Friends” came to Viera to discuss with local residents the State of the nion address by President Donald Trump, which aired the night before on Feb. 5. “I thought it was the best speech he’s done,” Anne Allison said. “I (particularly) like the way Trump is bringing the military back,” added Nancy Carrol. “For so many years, it’s been decimated. But, in
the last two years, it’s been given money to bring it back, to bring it back in order.” The show was a segment of “Fox & Friends” called “Breakfast with Friends,” where Fox News correspondents are sent around the country to interview local communities and discuss current affairs. During his State of the nion address, Trump spoke about various issues and plans for the nited States in the near future. These statements also included the announcement that the nited States will withdraw from the nuclear arms treaty with Russia, which was established in 1987. At the Indian River Colony
Club, however, discussions were more focused on some of the more pressing matters for Brevard County seniors. “I think the economy is very important (to Brevard),” IRCC resident Dale Bottom said. “And I really think that we do need an improved immigration program. We don’t have a big problem here because we have a wall, but there are lots of people coming into this country who shouldn’t be here. There are plenty of ways to come here legally, if they go through the process to do it.” “Fox & Friends” and “Breakfast with Friends” is broadcast at 6 a.m. daily on Fox News. VV

One thing that people often overlook when thinking about retirement and homecare, however, is what could happen to our family members when nobody is looking. On Feb. 21, the Brevard Commission on Aging along with other organizations focusing on seniors presented the 2019 Elder Abuse Awareness & Education Seminar Series. This series offered six speakers covering a wide range of topics, such as senior finances and signs of abuse in seniors. The series presented on Feb. 21 was titled Laying the Tracks. “‘Laying the Tracks’ (represents) laying the tracks into your future,” said Theresa Russel, a senior human services program specialist. “We base the seminars (on the audience) — one for general (audiences) and one for professionals. This one (was) for the general public.” The six speakers were: Dr. Visa Srinivasan, the medical director of Health

Last September, I received an email from Steve Hatchcock, the head custodian at Merritt Island High School. They were looking for bins to collect recyclables in the classrooms. The school had opted out from single-stream recycling and would be recycling only paper and cardboard on campus. Teresa Nick, an environmental science and biology teacher who sponsors the school’s Earth Club, wanted to keep collecting other recyclables and needed bins to keep everything else separate from the paper and cardboard. Those were the only items that would be going in the classroom bins per school instructions. I was able to provide her with 22 green 14-gallon bins that she could keep for as long as they are needed to be used strictly for recycling. After dropping off the bins to Hatchcock, I met with Nick. She needed signs to inform everyone of what was being collected, what was recyclable and what could be placed in the green bins. According to Charlie McMahon, the energy conservation specialist at Brevard Public Schools, school recycling dumpsters can be used for single-stream recycling as long as only acceptable items are placed in the dumpster and there is no contamination. That means that the recyclables

Nick collects can go straight into the recycling dumpster. In a meeting with MIHS Principal James Rehmer, who kindly agreed to see me without an appointment, I received the OK to work on a campaign to raise awareness about recycling. We also would concentrate on reducing campus litter and single-use plastic bottles. That was when Love Your Campus came to be. With the focus on the three Rs, we have been working with MIHS to Reduce Litter, Reuse Bottles and Recycle Better. The campaign was launched Feb. 1 and ran until March 1. Students, teachers and staff have been working together to improve in all three areas. Earth Club students have been involved in creating infomercials, hanging signs, making banners, manning the cafeteria recycle bin and collecting recyclables from the classrooms. Teachers received the signs, are recycling in their classrooms and using the signs to help identify what goes in the bin. Custodians, such as Tyrone Smith, provided the blue bin by the cafeteria and gave support during lunch. Recycle Brevard is all in
with this campaign by not only providing the green bins and signs, but also bringing a trivia game to help students recognize what can be recycled on campus. In just two weeks, there was a 63 percent increase in participation in the game. It is hoped hat intervention pays off and shows its effects in the recycle bins on campus. On Feb. 8, with help from our friend Elizabeth Baker from I Pick p Litter, 1 students joined us and Nick for a campus cleanup. We were happy to work together and remove litter from school grounds. Students do care and Nick hopes that the campaign results in “more awareness and education among young people on how to properly dispose of waste and, hopefully, promote the use of less single-use plastic.” And, she pleads for everyone to “be mindful of your daily actions; they have a direct impact on our environment.” Recycle Brevard would like to support teachers such as Nick and schools such as MIHS, which are making recycling better in Brevard. If your school is interested in our Love Your Campus campaign, please contact us. VV Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@RecycleBrevard.org.

Helping birds in harsh weather still admirable Spinning tales about feeding and sheltering wild birds. People feed and house wild birds to observe and preserve nature. Americans spend more than $3 billion yearly in feeding birds. Even in Australia, where this practice is strongly opposed by conservationists, numerous households nourish the birds. Fortunately, wild birds rarely overeat; therefore, overfeeding is not problematic. Certainly, there is controversy with this worldwide devotion to birds. Some experts affirm that wild creatures should support their own lives. If humans interfere, it will weaken their natural abilities to exist. Eventually, dependency on humans ensues. Nevertheless, offering food and shelter (preferably nesting houses with a perch) is periodically beneficial. Birds accept forage during the hardships of extreme weather, migration and the scarcity of seeds and insects in late winter and early spring. They also
European starling; backyard nesting boxes enabled the bluebird’s recovery. The song thrush in the nited ingdom now thrives because of backyard feeding. Cardinals, woodpeckers and nuthatches are some of the vulnerable species which people help in the winter. For absolute enjoyment, attract common birdhouse tenants such as purple martins, house wrens and chickadees. Feeders do entice diverse species — a welcome spectacle. However, the more birds, the more pathogens. There is less chance
welcome birdhouse shelter as opposed to taking refuge under a tree branch on the ground during frigid periods. nderstandably, the urban birds also need balanced diets and shelter. Nutriment should consist of more than crumbs in the park — moldy bread is not healthy. Masters at survival, some birds store fat during the winter day to keep warm during the night. They capably fluff their feathers to capture heat and slow their metabolism to conserve energy. Nature provides — which is what some experts try to convey. Surely, humans protect or accommodate species. In the nited States, the eastern bluebird lacked nesting cavities. One interference was competition by introduced species, such as the

— contagion is sometimes present. Bird droppings also transmit germs, many of them airborne. Still, birds rarely infect humans. Evidently, humanitarians need to consider the many consequences of caring for birds. The top priority is survival of these wild ones. ndeniably, their songs must continue, especially during the mating season. Consider the birdfeeder as a plate to be cleaned. Dispose of the debris under the feeder; it might cause sickness to ground-feeding birds or attract pests such as rats. Precaution is vital.
