Two days after being adopted by Oliver and Jeanne Downs of Suntree on Jan. 15, Jake still was wagging his tail and barking with glee. Perhaps, a little too much. Before that, the 8-year-old Yellow Labrador’s plight was sad and all too common in Florida. Jake’s best friend, a man, died two years ago. The man’s wife took care of Jake the best she could, but Jake never fully recovered from the loss of his forever buddy. Forever was too short for Jake, who gained weight and became a portly 83 pounds. The 72-year-old woman was hospitalized on Oct. 31. Jake was left alone. A neighbor came in once a day to leave some food, and a door was left open for Jake to relieve himself as needed in

His shots also expired. “A mutual friend told me that a woman at Viera Rehab (Viera Health and Rehabilitation Center) had no family and no one to visit her and help her with the dog,’’ said Kasie Hope Brautigam, who owns 2nd Mama’s Pet Sitting business. “I fixed up a plate of food on Christmas Day and we had a nice visit. I learned that she would never be able to go home. She was going from Viera Rehab to nursing care.’’ Brautigam received advice from Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida about the surrendering process. Runners follow the rainbow in colorful Emerald City 5K BY MARIA SONNENBERG Like Dorothy of Oz fame, the folks at Family Promise of Brevard know there is no place like home. The organization, dedicated to eradicating family homelessness on the Space Coast, is using its upcoming Emerald City 5K to raise both funds and awareness for the plight of displaced families. “We’re on the same path as Dorothy, because we all need help from our friends,” said Tara Pagliarini, Family Promise’s executive director. More than a thousand Brevard families currently are without permanent housing. The Emerald City 5K, now in its third year,

brings the community together in Viera to help improve the situation. Approximately 500 runners participated last year. Pagliarini thinks more will participate this year. “We hope we can reach 1,000,” she said. The afternoon race starts at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 from the Church at Viera. It is located at 9005 N. Wickham Road. Registration and packet pickup will be from 10 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Running Zone is orchestrating the race, which costs $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and younger. While running this yellow brick road might not get you to Oz, it might deliver a particularly nice

Naval Reserve as an ensign in the Navy Supply Corps, where she remained until she retired in 2013 with the rank of Commander. Morton’s job with the Supply Corps, which entailed financial and system analysis, included deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan and Cuba. She developed such severe breathing difficulties and asthma because of exposure to chemicals during deployment that she ended up at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. The hospital stay proved critical in providing direction

for the next chapter in her life, since both the attending physician and a nurse there recommended she consider a move to Florida — to Indian River Colony Club in Viera, to be precise. Morton took their advice, settling into her new home in IRCC in 2014. While walking her two beagles, Joline and Mercy, Morton kept running into her neighbor. Growing up in Vietnam, Minh Morton was so impressed with the efforts of the United States military to free her country that when her family exited their homeland to move to the State of Washington, she vowed to join the Armed Forces. “I really appreciated what they did,” she said. Morton’s spirit was willing, but her body didn’t cooperate. “I was too short to be an aviator in the Air Force and a Marine Corps recruiter told me the M-16 (automatic rifle) was bigger than I was,” said the 4-foot-11 Morton. Education always played an important part in her life, and she had earned a degree in accounting and international finance from the University of Puget Sound

in Tacoma. However, the degree didn’t help her initial efforts to join the military. “I was told the Army had no place for certified public accountants,” she said. The Office of the Inspector General, on the other hand, thought Morton’s academic training and business law skills would complement its mission. Morton accepted the position of CPA coordinator, a job that ensured that federal audits complied with all federal laws and government accounting office standards. During a business trip to Washington, she met a Navy Supply Corps captain who was so impressed by her skills that he coordinated with the Supply Corps community on Morton’s behalf. Morton finally got her wish to join the military when in 1988 she was commissioned into the U.S.

A native of Maui, Hawaii, Pokipala is about as Polynesian as one can get. His troupe includes professional artists from throughout the South Pacific. Lanikala’s has its beginnings as the first traveling Polynesian entertainment company on the Eastern Seaboard. Since 2002, the Orlandobased troupe has delighted audiences with an authentic luau experience at Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando, as well as at Universal’s Volcano Bay water theme park. Lanakila’s has performed its exotic songs and dances from the South Pacific in more than 100 countries. The Boomer Guide Expo performances will include

Be prepared to engage your inner hula dancer. “It’s a very high-energy, interactive audience experience,” Pokipala said. Thinga-ma-Jogger 5K returns to Manatee Elementary School BY CHRIS BONNANO A fun yearly tradition is set to be renewed at Manatee Elementary in Viera on Feb. 23 as the fifth annual Thinga-ma-Jogger 5K is held. The walk/run event is held as part of a celebration of the NEA Read Across America program and is held near Dr. Seuss’ birthday of March 2 each year as a celebration of his works. The race either caps off or starts a week of Dr. Seussthemed events at the school, according to Nicki Hensley, who serves as co-chair of the 5K and as a parent volunteer. This year, it will begin the festivities. “We really always have celebrated the author and his amazing use of vocabulary, poetry, humor,’’ Hensley said. “So, we thought, let's do a race around the same time that would celebrate his

The 5K itself begins at 7:30 a.m. and a free children’s run for ages 6 and younger will be held following the conclusion of the 5K. Those interested in signing up for the race can do so through the Thinga-maJogger 5K’s page at runsignup. com. The fee to register for the race through Feb. 9 is $23 for adults and $15 for children younger than 18. Those numbers increase from Feb. 10 to 22 when adults will have to pay $27 and children $20. On race day, the registration fee will

be $30 for adults and $25 for children. Hensley added that the first 650 finishers will receive a finishing medal to help celebrate the fifth anniversary of the event. Those who register by Feb. 9 also will be guaranteed a free shirt as well, organizers say. “We’re very excited about the fifth year,” Hensley said. “We can’t believe we made it this far.” In addition, the school is accepting new or “gentlyused books” to be donated as part of a book drive. Organizers said the book drive will help school libraries in need. Those books, they add, can be donated anytime at the school’s media center or on the morning of the race.VV

There’s no question Viera High wrestlers like Nathaniel Stover and John Banks are feeling much more comfortable in their second year in the sport. “I feel a lot more confident when I’m wrestling,” said Stover, who pointed out the improvement he’s made in his technique under the direction of Hawks coach Jim Gentile. Cyrus Joseph won the 5 to 7 age flight by shooting 31, while Jerimiah Smith won the 8 to 11 age flight. He also shot 31. There were 22 kids competing in the event, which took place Jan. 12. Wicker began playing golf five years ago after having a birthday party with Duran’s

Director of Instruction Justin Blazer. He then played for a few seasons in the PGA Junior League at Duran. He is now an eighth grader at Edgewood Junior/ Senior High School. He is a two-time letter winner for the Indians, who won the Cape Coast Conference and Class 1A, District 12 championships this past season. In addition to being a promising young golfer, Wicker also plays on the Viera Hawks travel baseball team. “It was a great day for junior golf in the Viera area,” Duran Head PGA Professional Matt Morrison said in a press release. “To watch the next generation of golfers have so much fun and compete at such a high level was amazing. The scores were low and it was great competition.” While it was a big day for the juniors, the adults will get their chance at some friendly competition in the future. Duran will host the first Par 3 Course Championship in March. VV

“We are thrilled to once again be bringing many of the top lady collegiate golfers in the nation to Duran Golf Club.”

It might take at least one round of 69 or better to win the Viera East Men’s Golf Association’s Club Championship this winter. Members are vying for one of 12 spots in the event. Then, out of that 12, four golfers will move on to compete in a playoff to decide the champion. The course at Viera East is in excellent shape. Look for low scores and a competitive tournament and playoff. The first Thursday of the month is reserved for an individual flighted round of golf with individual scores recorded versus team results.

Viera-Suntree Soccer Club celebrates its prestigious 10-year anniversary BY WENDY SCHEURING On Jan. 17, the VieraSuntree Soccer Club celebrated its 10-year anniversary. “Our main success is basically our club over the past 10 years,’’ said Udo Schenatsky, the founder and general manager. “We started with 93 kids in January 2009, growing to almost 400 kids in 2013. Right now, we maintain an average of 250 kids. To celebrate, the club is planning a big party in early May with music, stand-up

comedians, food and fun. “Everybody who is registered with us will get free entrance,” added Schenatsky. “It’s going to be a big celebration.” Schenatsky has maintained a soccer presence in Brevard County for 16 years. And, his experience in soccer is more extensive than that. “I was the director of soccer operations from 2004 to 2008 at the Cocoa Expo Sports Center, and I was the head goalkeeper coach for the Florida Youth Soccer Association from 2004 to

Udo Schenatsky founded the VieraSuntree Soccer Club. The native of Germany has helped soccer players in Brevard County for the past 16 years in different roles.

2009. In Germany, Schenatsky also was a semi-pro goalkeeper. He also coached at the highest youth level for Eintracht Frankfurt from 1990 to 1996. Beginning this fall, the Viera-Suntree Soccer Club will field competitive teams ranging from U12 to U18. “We are a family-oriented soccer club as we’ve always been,” Schenatsky said. “And, we are looking forward to having competitive teams in the fall.” In order to acquire its FYSA (Florida Youth Soccer Association) status for its competitive soccer teams, the Viera-Suntree Soccer Club will partner with a soccer club in Orlando. “That will give us a big opportunity to improve the soccer here in Brevard County and to compete with other major clubs here in the county,” Schenatsky said. Registration for competitive soccer teams will begin in May. The club has been practicing at the Viera East Community Association (VECA) for the past six years, where young soccer players have access to 2.5 acres for practice. “VECA has been very kind to us. They support us with everything to keep the program alive,” Schenatsky said. For information, go to vierasoccerclub.org or call 321-427-7337. VV

Evening of Elegance returns to beautiful setting SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE Save the date for Holy Trinity’s Evening of Elegance: Adventure Awaits on March 9. The picturesque outdoor setting alongside the Indian River Lagoon sets the stage for an elegant jungle-themed event under the stars. By popular demand, Evening of Elegance will once again take place on the beautiful South Tropical Trail estate of 2007 alumni parents, Ed and Cheryl Scott. Scott also is a former Holy Trinity trustee. This year, 100 percent of the funds donated to the school through sponsorship and attendance at Evening of Elegance will be used toward the purchase of a new school bus. Holy Trinity parents and cochairs, Hope Chanda and Jessica Eisenmenger Fleming (Class of 2004), along with master of ceremonies Bino Campanini have planned an adventurethemed evening featuring live music by Wonderama, delicious food and a live auction.

This is Chanda’s second year chairing Evening of Elegance. “It was a simple yes when being asked to co-chair Evening of Elegance for a second time,’’ Chanda said. “This is a small way that I can give back to Holy Trinity’s faculty, staff, students and our families.” Chanda and her husband, Joe, also have two sons, Cole and Wyatt, who are in seventh grade. Eisenmenger Fleming is Holy Trinity Class of 2004 alumna, and a Lower School parent. All three of her children attend the Lower School with plans to be Holy Trinity lifers. James Fleming is in second grade and enjoys competing for the swim team, basketball team and the math lab. Caroline Fleming is in the first grade and loves Holy Trinity cheerleading and the swim team. Evelyn Fleming is in pre-k and plans to join her siblings as an HT athlete as soon as she reaches first grade. Eisenmenger Fleming also is a dedicated volunteer serving Holy Trinity as an art docent for

multiple classes, a classroom volunteer, the Daisy Girl Scout Troop leader and a substitute teacher. When they moved back to Brevard County in 2016, Eisenmenger Fleming and her husband Michael chose to send their children to Holy Trinity because “Holy Trinity has the incredible ability to educate the whole child in an individualized, academically rigorous, arts enriched environment with an unparalleled focus on nurturing kindness and strong character in its students. We can’t imagine sending our children anywhere else.” Campanini and his wife Trish have three children. Carlo was the captain of the varsity soccer team and a Class of 2018 graduate; Luca, a Class of 2016 graduate also was captain of the varsity soccer team and is now a junior at Florida Tech; and Isabella is a graduate student at Florida Tech. Tickets are limited and last year's event was a sold-out success. For information, go to htacademy.org/eoe.VV

Newly independent Viera High robotics team gears up for competition BY CARL KOTALA The Viera High robotics team has gone independent, and that can only mean one thing for the members of this year’s Hawks Robotics group: They’re not just building a robot. They’re laying a new foundation for an entirely new program. “Being in the first year of the team is pretty exciting because you sort of get to set the legacy for the team for the future, said Ryan Buchanon, the chief engineer for this year’s team. “I think it’s exciting to be part of the first year of this team. After an offseason of fundraising and preparing for what will be an eight-week competition schedule, the Hawks are currently in the Building Season.

“We’ve got six weeks where we’ve got to build our robot, Buchanan said. “Right now, we’re working on the design process. We’re trying to use CAD software to make 3D models of what we want our robot to look like. The team is set to compete at the Orlando Regional on March 13 at the CFE Arena before heading to West Palm Beach for the South Florida Regional from March 27 to 30. If the team wins the competition or gets an award, it will get an invite to the national event which will be held from April 16 to 21 in Houston. Buchanan is one of 23 students on this year’s team. The others include: Sabrina Antoine; Alex Budko; Mikhail Budko; Asher Burrell; Joshua Carrizales; Alejondra Gonzalez-Nieves; Parker Helms; Tristan Hera;

Viera High students are in the Building Stage of putting together their robot for an eight-week competition schedule that begins next month. After previously being associated with Pink Alliance, the Hawks are now an independent team.

Zachary Knutson; Brianna Loughran; Ryan Lynch; Kyra McGowan; Michael Miniclier; Ethan Moran; Taylor Presley; Siddarth Ranganath; Kaila Rodriguez; Alex Sprunger; Isaiah Tadrous and Molly Walsh. Of the 23, Buchanan and Burrell are homeschooled. The rest are all Viera High students, whereas last year’s team consisted of students from Viera and four other schools. Previously, Viera’s robotics team had been with the NASA’s Pink Alliance. Viera High teacher David Formanek, who serves as the director and head coach of the Hawks Robotics team,

said it was time for the program to go independent. “It was mostly because there’s a growing interest in robotics at Viera High School, he said. “We just felt it was time for us to venture out on our own. With help from sponsors such as Lockheed Martin, Collins Aerospace and EMF Inc., the team and its coaches — Formanek; Roy Burrell; John “Courtney Carlson; Jeff Dohmen; Daniel Penny; Sean Whyard and Vanessa Whyard — hope making a splash at this year’s competitions will put Viera’s team on the map. “The challenge has been that we don’t have the legacy of the Pink Team, Formanek

said. “They’ve been around for 20-plus years. This is our first season. But the school’s been supportive. We’ve got a great group of kids. We’ve been meeting since September. “As coaches, we want to make sure that this robot is theirs, that it’s not the mentor’s (robot). ‌ We’re just there to guide, coach and get them to where they want to be.â€? Perfect job for Suntree’s school resource officer BY ERNEST ARICO When Cpl. Joel Hernandez was given the opportunity to be a school resource officer at Suntree Elementary School, it was a “no brainer” for him. “It was a perfect situation for me because it was part of my five-year plan to work and be able to go back to school and get my bachelor’s degree,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier.” Born in Passaic, New Jersey in 1992, Hernandez graduated from Palm Bay High School in 2011 where he excelled on the school’s varsity baseball and football teams. In October 2015, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office sponsored Hernandez to attend Eastern Florida State College’s police academy. Following his graduation from the police academy in 2016, Hernandez joined the Sheriff’s Office as a road deputy and was assigned to the department’s North Precinct, which covers Port St. John, Titusville and Mims. if you took a position with a school it was considered a setback,” Hernandez explained. “But now, Sheriff (Wayne) Ivey has been putting our best deputies in our schools to

handle any potential threat or situation.” As the school resource officer, Hernandez said his two biggest concerns are identifying potential shooters and keeping track of who comes into the school. “Most people don’t know that many of the active shooters in schools are students,” he said. “That’s why I always ask administrators to identify for me who are the bullies in school. I want to watch them and keep an eye on them. “My other big concern is keeping track of who comes into the school,” he continued. “I monitor all 10 cameras and make sure that all visitors coming into the school are wearing their yellow visiting stickers.” Since taking the position, Hernandez had a chance to evaluate the school’s security system. He saw a potential safety issue that concerned him — the school’s Assisted Walker Program. “Law enforcement thinks differently than administrators,” he explained. “I saw potential problems with

the game,” Buchanan said. To do that requires the students to work in a number of different areas, including the strategists who break down the rules and the different things that have to happen in the game while also doing scouting and data analysis.

“We help with the drive team, which basically is who controls the robot at the competitions,” said Walsh, one of the team’s strategists. “We’ve been working on several spreadsheets to help simplify things. We help with game strategy in general.”

Buchanan, who has been doing robotics for three years, has decided he wants to become a mechanical engineer. That’s just one of the many benefits the program can provide. “This program exposes kids to all kinds of different careers,” Formanek said.

the program. Too many parents and people waiting outside the gate to pick up students and walk them back to their cars.” Administrators discontinued the program. Another issue Hernandez addressed were parents picking up students after school. “We had some incidents where drivers were driving on the sidewalk to get around the traffic,” he said. “I started parking my patrol car partially on the sidewalk to prevent that.” Despite some of the safety issues, Hernandez said he’s having a great time at Suntree — especially with the kids. “When you work on the road as a road deputy, you deal with a lot of negativity,” he said. “However, here at Suntree everyone has smiles for you. They’re happy to see you. The kids feel very comfortable talking to me and being around me. I try to make it a point to talk to them in the cafeteria and on the playground. I enjoy playing basketball with them and interacting with them.”

him a new home. While reading a story on the Internet about prescription drug prices in Canada, Jeanne Downs saw Jake’s story and picture when it popped up on the free Nextdoor App. The Downs have Winnie, an estimated 7-year-old West Highland Terrier mix. She was found wandering just off State Road 528. They adopted her in May from the Brevard Humane Society in Cocoa. “It took us three months to get to the point where she wasn’t scared anymore,’’ said Jeanne Downs, 71. “Now, she’s just laid back and goofy.’’ They thought Jake would be the perfect dog to keep Winnie company. “We were going to start looking for another dog,’’ said

Oliver Downs, 73. “We hate to leave Winnie alone. We knew how friendly Labs can be. When Jeanne showed me that picture, I said, ‘let’s go for it.’ We’re just too old to get puppies and go through that again.’’ Jake walks a little slow right now, but it shouldn’t take long before the weight comes off and he’s ready for long jaunts. “He’s starting to get over his anxiety,’’ Oliver Downs said. “I got down on the bed next to him and talked to him quietly. I let him know that he’s ours.’’ Nine people showed interested in adopting Jake and more were soon to follow as people read about his plight on the Nextdoor App. Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida has several homeless dogs available for adoption. New restaurants bolster food options in Viera, east and west BY CHRIS BONANNO

There’s more positive business news for the Viera-Suntree area in addition to the opening of an Earth Fare health and wellness supermarket at 5410 Murrell Road. A new IHOP restaurant will soon be opening just east of the entrance to the Brevard Zoo. According to Janet Alexander, director of marketing and communications with IHOP, the new eatery will open in the footprint of what was formerly a Denny’s restaurant at 8201 N. Wickham Road. Alexander, in an email to the Viera Voice, added that the new establishment “will be bringing at a minimum 80 new jobs to the area.” She added that IHOP was hoping to open the restaurant in May. Beyond that, a new Culver’s restaurant is set to be constructed at 6451 Lake Andrew Drive in Viera, near the intersection with Judge Fran Jamieson Way, according to Paul Pitas, director

Per its website, Culver’s specializes in what they call “butterburgers” along with fresh frozen custard and Wisconsin cheese curds. Pitas added that the company expects the eatery to open in the late spring. While some businesses were planning to open their doors, others were closing them. The Pollo Tropical restaurant, located at The Avenue Viera, has closed. A note left on one of the doors of the building did state that “it’s never an easy decision to close a restaurant with

loyal guests like you, and we’re sorry for the inconvenience.” The note also encouraged people to visit their West Melbourne location. Additionally, the Beef O’Brady’s restaurant, also located in the same shopping center as Earth Fare at 5410 Murrell Road, was closed until further notice as of Dec. 24. A note was left on a door of the establishment indicating that the closure was due to a remodeling of the eatery. The Burger 21 restaurant, located at 7171 Lake Andrew Drive in Viera, is temporarily closed. According to a note left on the front door of the establishment, the temporary closure is due to a remodeling. VV

Novus Artem will host inaugural art show in Viera BY WENDY SCHEURING As a creator of jewelry, Melbourne resident Lissa Cordova realized that exhibiting works of art in a traditional gallery doesn’t always help artists acquire the exposure they need. Artists have a great need to develop a fan base, but few know how. Cordova created the Novus Artem International Gallery to help fill that need. “Novus Artem” means “the new art” in Latin. Novus Artem comprises traveling art shows, where patrons can meet and chat with artists and an online presence of artists and their work, including a 3D gallery. The inaugural traveling exhibit, “Art is My Favorite Lover” will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Feb. 16 in Viera at the Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce at 2261 Town Center Avenue, Suite 103. “This first art exhibit focuses on the love art imparts in all of our lives,” Cordova, the founder and executive director, wrote in an email. The paintings of four Central Florida artists will be shown. The featured artist is Jose Sanchez of Apopka. “He offers portraits in a surrealistic approach as an homage to great influencers such as Picasso and Dali,” wrote Cordova. “Raul Gomez awakens our sense of responsibility

They are very decorative and pretty.” Artist Tania Michelle started painting “vivid,

Suntree showcases cool cars and crafts

BY MARIA SONNENBERG Dick Losi’s car always makes a grand entrance into parking lots. The Suntree resident’s 1923 Model T would be cool enough as an antique, but Losi has souped it up with a 350-horsepower Chevy engine, a Mustang rear end and yards of glistening chrome.

“It’s actually a Model T-Bucket, a hot rod,” Losi said. Losi’s car will be among the drool-inspiring vehicles at the Suntree Car & Craft Show, scheduled from noon until 4 p.m. Sunday, March 10 at the Suntree Master Homeowners Association building on 7550 Spyglass Hill Road.

Losi, who is orchestrating the car portion of the event, hopes to attract 100 cars. He should have no problem since this is an inclusive show. “We hope to have everything from cars going back to the early 1900s to some late models right out of the showroom since we have no restrictions on age

or make,” he said. Any owner with a car he or she considers worthy of exhibition and competition for prizes can pre-register for $15 or pay the $20 admission fee on the day of the event. Suntree Master Homeowners’ Association also welcomes crafters, artists, business and food

Book points to ‘100 Things To Do In Orlando Before You Die’ BY JULIE STURGEON Co-authors John Brown and Jon Busdeker’s book “100 Things To Do In Orlando Before You Die” provides a bucket list of day trips for anyone in Central Florida. The book is a handy compilation of unique restaurants, recreational activities, historical sites and other singular attractions. “Central Florida is so much more than Walt Disney and theme parks,” said Busdeker, an Orlando resident. “There are a lot of neat, quirky things to do. And, my job was to go out and find them.” Busdeker, who worked at The Orlando Sentinel and WESH, is somewhat of an expert on happenings in Orlando and the Central Florida area. Based upon his exposure as a reporter, Busdeker was tasked with going out and finding new places for the book’s second edition. Eateries include a sweet factory and an oyster bar, while entertainment ranges from a hot air balloon ride to the world’s tallest swing. There are typically no long lines, crowded sidewalks and sweltering temperatures to endure at these local gems. Many of the sports and recreation activities involve water or air conditioning. There is an indoor ski and snowboard park, an indoor kart and game center, even an indoor

So, what are some of the authors’ recommendations? “My absolute favorite place is the Pinball Lounge,” Busdeker said. “These guys were pinball machine collectors from early on.” The Pinball Lounge, which features classic pinball machines from the past to the present, is in Oviedo, just north of Orlando. Attorney will share legal advice at Boomer Guide Senior Expo BY MARIA SONNENBERG

VIERA VOICE Jill Blue

Attorney William Johnson, right, chats with Sharron Fienning at his law firm in Suntree.

Growing older requires legal savvy. Life unfortunately doesn’t get simpler as the years pass. We might grow wiser as we grow older, but also grow in need of legal savvy as our financial and physical situation grows more complex. According to elder law attorney William Johnson, it’s never too young to start preparing for issues such

as estate, incapacity and long-term care planning, guardianships, probate, Medicaid and wills and trusts. “The point is to know the rules and plan accordingly,” said Johnson, a major sponsor of this year’s Aloha Brevard — Boomer Guide Senior Expo, a South Pacific themed expo. Tomorrow will be here sooner than later, and then it might be too late. “If you don’t plan ahead, you can end up in a really bad situation,” Johnson added. If anyone knows the subject of elder law, it is Johnson. The Melbourne attorney is the only one

in the county to be board certified in elder law by the Florida Bar Association. Few attorneys achieve this high level of expertise. In 2017 and 2018, he was named Member of the Year by the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar Association. He was co-winner of the distinction in 2015 and 2016. His accomplishments in the field of elder law earned him inclusion among the elite group of Florida Super Lawyers. For several years, he discussed elder law issues through his column in Florida Today. A graduate of the University of Florida College of Law, Johnson was admitted to the Florida Bar

in 1991. “Ever since I opened my office, I did estate planning,” he said. With more than 25 years of experience, Johnson has witnessed the many horror stories that can happen to folks who enter the golden years without a plan. Johnson makes it easier with a free consultation to discuss a customized course of action. “There is a lot of misinformation out there,” Johnson said. The law office of William A. Johnson is at 140 Interlachen Road, Suite B. in Melbourne. For information, call 321-426-1865 or go to floridaelderlaw.net. VV

we do things so we put this fundraiser into play,” said Survive First founder Doug Monda, who now is retired after having worked for the Cocoa Police Department. “We want to promote a healthy lifestyle. In the first responder world, it takes a lot of toll on the first responders and they tend to from the stress of the job, you know, stay at home and not take care of themselves like they used to. So, we really wanted to do the first event here to promote that healthy lifestyle and to get people out and doing something healthy.” Monda started Survive First based on his own difficult experience. “I was a SWAT guy, narcotics agent with the

police department and I retired as a narcotics agent,’’ Monda said. “About 16, 17 years, I think, and probably about 2013, I started struggling really bad with PTSD and depression. And, obviously (it) took over me at one point where I had a failed suicide attempt.’’ Monda added that Cocoa Police Department Chief Mike Cantaloupe was able to assist Monda in getting help. “When I came back, I didn’t want to have any first responders to have to go through what I went through,’’ Monda said. “So, I decided I was going to start this foundation so that when first responders needed help, that we could be able to provide them with resources. And the other thing I learned is most first responders weren’t receiving the help because

they couldn’t afford it.’’ Retired U.S. Army Col. Danny McKnight, who served as the race starter, also wants to help first responders. “The cause is what it’s all about,’’ McKnight said. “The run is, you know for the cause, but the cause is that we are losing, unfortunately, Check out the Q&L website for class schedule and events. law enforcement officers,  We are an authorized, full line retailer for Baby Lock®, first responders period. Disposing of old CRT TVs often hurts fragile environment Technology is cool and has been changing at a pace that many cannot keep up with. With an estimate of 229 million units sold in 2017, TV sales are expected to increase in 2019 due to new “jumbo-sized sets in stores along with more enhancements to display performance and increasingly sophisticated voice control,” according to Consumer Reports. This leaves consumers wondering what to do with their old box once they upgrade. Some flat screen TVs, now unwanted, can easily be recycled as e-waste. Recycle Brevard accepts those as well as other electronics through a partnership with Titusvillebased Computers Advancing Education, whose goal is to refurbish computers to donate to local nonprofit organizations, seniors, students and teachers. Whatever cannot be refurbished is recycled. But what about my darn old CRT TV? As NBC News reported in 2016, demand for new technologies led TV manufacturers to no longer produce cathode ray tubes (CRT) TVs, driving to the ground the market of used glass tubes. The alternative

the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers stopped accepting CRTs on June 1, 2016 and since then CRTs are being landfilled here, too. CRTs make their way to the landfill through waste collection haulers. In Viera, Waste Management instructs residents to place CRT TVs out with their yard waste. CRTs will be picked up for free. Recycling still is being offered by companies such as Best Buy, though. CRTs smaller than 32 inches can be recycled in their program, but they do charge $25 for the service. Even though CRTs are no longer produced, there are around five billion pounds worth of CRT TVs still in American homes, according to the Electronics Recycling Coordination Clearinghouse. They will need to be dealt with in the near future. Consumers disposing of their CRT TVs will have to decide whether to opt for convenience and place their CRTs on the curb, or take a better approach and choose to recycle them for a fee. What would you do if one of those consumers were you? Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@RecycleBrevard.org. VV

BEYOND the CURB Marcia Booth

President & Founder, Recycle Brevard

to safely dispose of those tubes, which contain on average six pounds of lead, is to recycle them. The problem is there are just a limited number of recyclers who accept CRTs. “There really isn’t a viable option for recycling CRT TVs, at least in the state of West Virginia," said James Young, the Kanawha County waste agency executive, who spoke to NBC News. Since the process of separating, storing and transporting without causing environmental contamination is expensive and, on top of that, “the value of the remaining commodities, such as copper wiring, plastic and other metals, has gone down in the past few years,” recyclers find it much harder to absorb the costs associated with CRT recycling, according to Earth911. CRT TVs started to be officially dumped into West Virginia landfills on July 1, 2016. In Brevard County,

Purple martins migrate to and from South America.

Florida migration not just a bird’s tale Spinning tales about birds, who are among are the most resilient and vital creatures. Birds are survivors. Behaviors and adaptations enable them to encounter cold climates and find nourishment. Of course, mature birds are fitter. How do birds tolerate winter venues? Some remain in breeding grounds. They forage in tree bark for seeds and insects instead of on the frozen ground. Feeders and birdhouses for roosting are advantageous. Actually, 13 male bluebirds were witnessed nestled in a single birdhouse. For some species, migration occurs. Around 1,800 of the 10,000 bird species are long-distance travelers seeking their dietary needs. Most migrating timing and control is processed at birth; environmental cues, mental maps and landmarks also provide guidance. Currently of concern are progressively shorter winters. The warmer, early springs (false springs) bring earlier arrivals; consequently, connections are disrupted for peak breeding and peak insect availability. A serious causal effect is reproductive failure. In Florida, wintering birds savor the climate. Most of the northern birds reach their destinations by early December. Several wintering locations endure: waterfowl at St. Marks in the Panhandle and at Merritt Island; warblers in the Keys; American bitterns in the sawgrass marshes

of the Everglades; and redbreasted mergansers along the coastline. Certainly, the availability of food is accommodating. Undeniably, these creatures are essential to the planet. They pollinate, disperse seeds, control pests and parasites, recycle nutrients and they might signal a threatened ecosystem (as the canary in the coal mine). Moreover, birds have inspired man to fly. Enthusiasts such as Da Vinci and the Wright brothers were avid observers of these creatures. Obviously, airplane wings are designed similar to birds. For thrust to create lift, birds flap their wings and airplanes use engines. Therefore, NASA and Boeing are studying the efficient V-shaped formation of Canada geese during migration. In the future, aligned jetliners could fly in formation like birds, saving energy by reducing drag. Likewise beneficial is the joy birds generate. It is captivating to perceive flocks of purple martins gracing the skies while migrating to and from South America. And always soothing is the brilliant blue of the indigo bunting or the iridescence of the hummingbird. VV

holding you in tight and you lean back and you know you’re safe, it’s a little bit better.” Both Grammer and Parente said they enjoyed the experience. “Amazing,” Grammer said following rappelling. “Just truly because it’s for a good

cause and the opportunity to be able to do it. It was just overall. The whole experience was wonderful.” “Me too,” added Parente. “Helping to build houses for people who can’t afford (it) themselves and it just is wonderful and amazing going over the edge.”

So, this money that’s raised here locally today is all going to go toward that 114 (thousand), which is all of our material costs.” The Viera-Suntree area was well represented among the participants, with Mike Acosta of Viera Pizza as well as Nicole Grammer and Susie Parente from the Viera REMAX team among those who were courageous in the name of charity. “I’ve never done anything like this, so I mean I would say yes, it’s definitely a little bit scary, little bit scary,” Acosta said. “The anticipation leading up to it is what’s the really scary part ’cause you’re thinking and over thinking and over thinking. But, once you get in there and you feel the harnesses and they’re
