When Viera resident Gerard “Gerry” Fahey's feet hit the ground alongside those of his fellow runners, charitable donations go up. Little did Suntree resident Jill Blue-Gaines know when she launched the Bluewater Foundation with the

inaugural Color Me Healthy 5K Run/Walk last year that she would be engaging an army of runners to support various causes in line with the Bluewater mission to help children and animals but by totally separate charities centered in the Viera/Suntree area. Local runs began helping

Dependable Deliveries delighted to get the call for patriotic move BY LINDA WIGGINS

It's not the most unusual call they've answered, but it definitely was an honor. When the phone rang recently at Dependable Deliveries in Melbourne, it was a request for the kidglove moving of 28 large panels containing the names of lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and the growing list of names of military heroes who have given their lives since that day in the war on terror. “That was pretty awesome. Our guys were happy to be of service that day even though they were just doing their jobs,” said Jesse Scianno, who has owned the company for 14 years. The request came from Viera Voice sister paper Senior Life, whose Boomer Bash & Senior Expo Nov. 18 at The Avenue Viera included a Veterans Muster and patriotic exhibit area anchored by the Moving Tribute. “They did a great job,” said Tommy Anderson, president of Some Gave All Inc. in Rockledge, the charity that stewards the Moving Tribute. “We are very careful with the exhibit and we can't have just anyone handling the pieces.” The Viera-based task was not unusual because the

community is practically the headquarters for Dependable Deliveries, the crews spend so much time there. “If you think about it, that's where all the development is going on in Brevard County,” Scianno said. “We are not only moving families in. We get deliveries of furniture and everything else for interior designers. We hold it in our warehouse until they are ready for it, and then we deliver it to them.” It definitely keeps Scianno's team of six fulltime and four floating movers busy. What are some of the more unusual items he gets called on to move? Drill presses from a bowling alley, vending machines, anything and everything that might be found in a house or a shopping mall. Sometimes as many as 500 balloons. “We move whatever we can get our hands on,” Scianno said. “But yes, the guys are quicker to go on the job to move

Basic rules for golf cart use in both Viera and Suntree outside of a golf course:

• The driver must be at least 14 years of age. • The number of occupants may not exceed one per seat, and occupants must be seated. • The ordinance restricts golf carts to a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour. • Golf carts may only operate on roads that have been specifically designated for golf cart use. • Carts can be used on sidewalks adjacent to state highways only if the sidewalk is at least 8 feet wide. Carts can only cross roadways/highways if the Department of Transportation has approved the site to cross. • Safety equipment must include the following in good condition: tires, steering apparatus, front and rear reflectors, horn. • Operation is only allowed from dawn to dusk unless cart is outfitted with proper headlights, brake lights, turn signals and a windshield, to also apply during conditions of rain, smoke or fog. • The operator must obey all traffic regulations. For more details, go to flsenate.gov/Laws/ Statutes/2015/0316.212 Differences: Viera residents may use golf carts on streets in their residential sub-community only until they can access an 8-foot-wide paved path and then must use a path, per the 2014 ordinance amendment for Viera. The ordinance amendment does not apply to any other area of unincorporated Brevard County. Because Suntree requested and was classified as a “golfing community,” residents may use golf carts on any Suntreeowned street. Carts may use pedways if they are 8-feet wide or are otherwise marked for golf cart use.

Classification as 'golfing community' gives Suntree more cart privileges BY LINDA WIGGINS

The information fair is free. “Many people are under the impression that they can use their golf carts as a second vehicle and go anywhere with it. This is a misconception,” said Thomas, who worked on the recent ordinance amendment, classifying Suntree as a “golfing

While golf cart rules in the sister communities of Suntree and Viera differ, one issue is very much shared: a concern for the safety of teens who pile on more riders than a cart is designed for, exceed the speed limit and drive where carts are not permitted, especially too near traffic or pedestrians. “It's not just teens, and we'll talk about that in a minute, but we want to get the word out to parents what the rules are, and we want to make sure they inform their teens and hold them accountable. We want our children to enjoy themselves, but in the proper rules so they are safe,” Suntree resident and community leader Marvin Thomas said. VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins Residents Suntree families have long enjoyed the can visit a convenience of dropping off and picking up Suntree Master children at Suntree Elementary School.

community,” allowing golf carts on all roads in Suntree. Previously, golf cart use was only permitted to and from Suntree Country Club for the purpose of facility use. A growing number of families used golf carts to drop off and pick up their children at Suntree Elementary School. The new ordinance gives official approval to this practice, which previously

was merely overlooked. Golf carts can only cross Wickham Road at the Pinehurst Avenue light to go to or from north Suntree to south Suntree. Once Pinehurst turns into Jordan Blass Drive at the south end of the community, Suntree roads officially end at the crosswalk to Suntree Elementary School at its northwest boundary, and with it, lawful use of golf carts.

“We see kids going to the Jordan Blass McDonald's on golf carts, and adults going all the way across Wickham Road at that intersection to get to Fresh Market and all those restaurants,” Thomas said. “That is a non-criminal traffic citation and can result in a fine if Brevard County Sheriff's deputies spot you.” VV

the growing list of mutually supportive running events has expounded on the good done by charity-minded health seekers, and that's just the first quarter. “I have always loved 5K runs and I knew that each of them benefited important causes. Runners donate with their feet each time they pick an event to participate in,” Blue-Gaines said. “But what I couldn't imagine was how we could form a partnership of mutual support with other charities that could amplify tenfold what we can accomplish by engaging one another's runners on additional events.” Fahey is a perfect example of health-minded charity in action. At 73, running 5Ks is a

way to give back to the sport that gave him back his life. “Doctors told me I was going to die, and that inspired me to turn my life around, and now I encourage others to get moving,” Fahey said. “You are never too old to be in the best health possible.” The inaugural Bluewater runner was the first to sign up for this year's race. His goal is to run 2,000 5Ks. This will be No. 1,981. Do the math, and at the average $25 donation it adds up to a lot of giving, and many runners average a race per week or month. This year, Bluewater's Color Me Healthy 5K benefits the YMCA scholarship fund for children who could not otherwise afford a health club or swim membership. The second annual Color Me Healthy 5K Run/Walk at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7,

sponsored by Viera Voice, promises to be an even more motivating way to start off the year on the right foot. Runners and the public will get a free chance for the grand prize drawing of an hourlong helicopter ride for three persons over Viera/Suntree and from the St. Johns River to the beaches. The Jan. 7 event is hosted by venue sponsor Suntree Homeowners Association at its Jack Mahon Park for the start, finish and festivities. The run/walk traverses plush neighborhoods along Spyglass Hill Road.

Best-selling children's author Jaimie Engle ― writing coach for Quest and Suntree elementary schools ― and retired Suntree Elementary gifted teacher Kitt Kane will headline the Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards children's writing contest exhibit, inspiring young authors to plan their submissions for the contest, which includes art and photography. The children's awards ceremony will be April 22 at the Viera Wetlands Festival and The Charlie Awards, as they are known in conservation circles, will

be April 14 at the Heritage Isle Ballroom adjacent to the wetlands. Corbeil's widow and Viera Voice nature columnist Charlotte Corbeil will oversee the arts section, giving youth ideas for their submissions. She sponsors the cash prizes for the contest of $100, $50 and $25 in each of the many age and media categories. Award-winning nature photographer and Florida Master Naturalist Ivan Green will oversee nature photography instruction, and sign up students ages 5 to 18 for the free Feb. 18 special tour of Viera Wetlands to provide inspiration for submissions. Tigers aiming for championship seasons

BY CARL KOTALA

After making back-to-back final four appearances, the Holy Trinity boys basketball team isn’t about to lower its expectations for this season. And with a few key additions and another year in coach John Castillo’s system, the Holy Trinity girls have raised the bar for themselves as well. In other words, it should be another fun year of hoops for the Tigers. “We definitely want to get back for the third year in a row,” Holy Trinity senior forward Cory Kaplan said. “I think we can do it. We’ve just got to play as a team through the whole year, stay sound defensively.” The Tigers lost just one player from last year’s team that played for the Class 5A championship and have gotten a big addition in senior guard Tony Jenkins,

who joins a lineup that includes Kaplan, Jashaun Corbin, Tyler Forde, Tay Griffin, Seth Coleman, Brandon Schwab, Rey Idowu, Tyrel Harris, John Wills and Preston Milo. But as Holy Trinity coach Steve Henderson is quick to point out, getting back to the final four isn’t just a foregone conclusion in a competitive district and a region that now includes defending Class 3A state champion Windermere Prep. Once again, the Tigers are going to have to rely on their pressure defense creating offensive opportunities and wearing down opponents. “To get back to the final four, it’s a long road,” Henderson said. “It’s obviously a goal, but we’re just trying to stay grounded right now and get better every day. Because if we don’t, there’s no chance of it

happening.” Holy Trinity’s girls, meanwhile, are relying on a roster that features talented senior Natalia Walcott, newcomers Kaytee Castillo (junior) and Jordan Blair (freshman) and key players like senior Paris Wiechecki-Vergara, junior Kate Starkey, senior Sadie Girard and senior Mackenzie Wills. Other key players include Ashley Stevens, Jenn McChrystal, Marissa Catalano, Hannah Gunderson and Haley Forde. “Our guard play is improving and our bigs are playing very well,” John Castillo said. “I still don’t VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala think we’ve had our best Senior Sadie Girard, right, is one of the leaders on a Holy Trinity team game.” that hopes to compete for the district title this season.

Live the Intra-coastal Lifestyle!

As the Tigers showed during an early-season loss to Astronaut, cutting down on turnovers will be a big factor in Holy Trinity’s success this season. Girard said the team must also improve its defense and its rebounding in order to get where it wants to go. And as a senior, Girard would like to go out by giving the Tigers something they’ve never had before: “My goal is to win districts, of course,” she said. “We don’t even have a banner up there (on the wall). We definitely want one, and I think we can do it. We can beat all of the teams in our district if we come together and work hard.” VV

With a pair of new coaches in the fold, the Viera High boys and girls basketball teams are going through a little bit of an adjustment period. But that doesn’t mean the Hawks won’t be formidable by the end of the season. Brett Fink, who coached the Viera girls last season, has moved over to the boys program following the departure of Terry Parks. The girls will now be coached by Ray Kimball, who has 30 years of experience coaching in Michigan. “I didn’t have an opportunity to work with these kids in the summer,” Kimball said. “I came in in August and we’ve got a little transition going. I’m trying to figure them out. They’re trying to figure me out.

“We’re going to be better at the end than we were at the beginning. There’s no doubt about it. I’m very confident about that.” Senior forward Kaitlyn Jensen, already a standout in volleyball, track and softball, decided to come out for basketball and is already having a big impact on the Hawks. Sophomore Tyrese Gonzales leads a young roster that shows some promise and also includes Samantha Parish, Corrine Flojole, Jaeda Stewart, Amanda Fentress, Marchella Bodi, Caitlyn Hoffine, Sarah Smith, Vanessa Collard and Ali Shoff. The Hawks got off to a rough start, losing seven of their first eight games before reeling off victories against Hagerty, Space Coast, Merritt Island and Liberty.

Senior forward Kaitlyn Jensen is playing basketball for the first time since the eighth grade and is having a big impact on the Hawks' season.

“I think we’ll get better and better as the season goes on,” Jensen said following the Hagerty win. “We have a lot of heart and a lot of athleticism on the team, but it has to click for us.” While the Hagerty victory might have been the game to help turn the season around for the Viera girls, the Viera boys got off to a 3-1 start under Fink. Between the leadership of senior co-captains Alex Aebli and D’Travious Marshall and the new defensive intensity Fink brings to the program, the Hawks are trending up this season. “The message I bring every time I come to a team is let’s adhere to three core things — play hard, play right and play together,” Fink said. “They have met my expectations. That’s not to say we don’t have room to grow, but as far as getting out of the gates, I’m very happy.” Playing a fast pace means

Academic coaches are having a big impact at Holy Trinity

BY CARL KOTALA

Abbie Shepard isn’t struggling in math. If anything, the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy sixth grader is way ahead of the curve. That’s the beauty of the school’s Academic Coaching for Excellence (ACE) program instituted last year by Headmaster James Landi at both the upper and lower campuses. It’s not just for students who are struggling. It’s also for students who want to get ahead, learn better organizational skills, or simply make that English paper really pop. Academic coaches on both

campuses work in harmony with the teachers, providing one-on-one or small group instruction to improve the learning experience for students on all levels. “We’re all trying to get to the same place,” said Kathy Peters, Director of Junior High Academics and Advising for Holy Trinity’s Upper School. “We want our students to excel. When you can see that somebody who was really struggling feel better about themselves because of this, that’s awesome.” Holy Trinity’s Lower Campus offers an after-school math lab staffed three days a week by Michelle Sendler. All four coaches are certified teachers. “We have (academic coaches) for all topics — whatever students are in need of,” said Katie Grant, Director of Lower School Guidance. “They’re meeting with the student, they’ll communicate with the teachers and find out where that student is struggling. “It could be on a bigger scale, that they’re struggling with a few lessons, or it could be there’s just one lesson where they need that reinforcement.” Shepard is on the other end of that scale. She works with Catherine Koos, a former math teacher who is now the Head of Lower School. The sixth grader is finishing up Algebra I and will be starting Geometry — an eighth-grade level subject — in the spring.

Holy Trinity sixth-grader Abbie Shepard works with her academic coach and Head of Lower School Catherine Koos. Shepard is finishing up Algebra I and will begin studying Geometry in the spring.

“Math’s always been really easy for her, so she never really had to practice,” said Julie Shepard, Abbie’s mother. “But now, she’s having to study, work through problems and ask questions and be organized and seeing when she needs extra help.

“… Even though she now can see how math can be applied in the real world, I’m just so thankful her study skills have improved and her self-motivation has really taken off.”

Viera graduate receives national scholarship at Florida Classic game SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Viera High School 2016 graduate Alyssa Hamilton received the national ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) scholarship Nov. 19 during the Florida Classic in Orlando. Col. Edwin Escobar, professor of military science at Florida A&M University, presented the national award to the FAMU student before the halftime show as thousands of fans of both FAMU and Bethune-Cookman University watched. Parents Charles and Beverly Hamilton were able to look on from the sidelines and take photos as Hamilton received her award. As a freshman cadet, Hamilton received her award then returned to her duty station at the ROTC recruitment booth, until her replacement arrived so she could watch the game. Hamilton signed as a scholarship recipient in May of her senior year at Viera High. However, she did not receive official word on the amount of the scholarship until the event. The amount of $47,600 awarded will cover her tuition, books, room and board, and fees for FAMU’s Rattler Battalion commitment of service. Hamilton is majoring in

Viera’s Academic Team has history-making year

HOLY TRINITY

continued from page 10

Shepard’s math progression will set her up nicely for college, where she plans to study engineering and prepare for a career she has wanted since the third grade. “I want to be a patent attorney when I grow up,” Abbie Shepard said. “I just like the idea of it because it involves things I like, like engineering and robotics and it helps protect people’s ideas and inventions.” In addition to a math lab run by teacher David Bonanza, Upper School students can take advantage of an early-morning Writing Lab with Melissa Moriarty and a Science Academic Lab provided by teacher and high school dean Jessica Kelce. Other coaches include Carol Karp, Jocey Szmidt and Caroline Hatten, who helps students prepare for standardized college admittance tests. As Peters can attest, the one-on-one time the coaches spend with students is invaluable. “You can present in front of the classroom, but when you’re working with a student one-to-one, that’s how you really develop the relationship,” she said. “And especially in junior high, it’s about relationships. “That’s what our kids need. They need adults that care about them. The way I see it, the more adults you can put in a junior high student’s life that care about them in a genuine way and are willing to help them, that’s golden.” VV

BY CARL KOTALA

It’s been a historic year for the Viera High School Academic Team. After a strong regular season that qualified the Hawks for the 15-team county-wide tournament, Viera finished third overall — its best finish ever. In addition, senior Summer Jasinski finished third individually to become the first Viera High student to qualify for the AllBrevard Team. “We’ve never made it to the district competition at all, which is the top six, so it was very exciting for us,” Jasinski said. “… I’ve been on the team all four years and we’ve never done anything. We’re all seniors (except for one) and it was our last year. We really wanted to do something kind of cool. That was our only goal. We were like, ‘We’re going to make it to districts this year even if we’re just sixth.'” Viera’s Academic Team, which is led by teacher Ron Peters, consists of Jasinski, Mitchell Lewis, Graham Neustel, Nivetha Aravind (a junior), Parth Turakhia, Eric Beck, Steven Swingle and Claire Hendrick.

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Summer Jasinski made Viera High history when she became the first member of the school's Academic Team to make the All-Brevard Team. As a team, Viera had its best-ever finish of third place.

The competitions, which were held every Monday at the Brevard School District offices, consisted of five players on each team buzzing in to answer questions as you would see on a television game show.

CRUISE NIGHT

This year’s county-wide competition featured questions ranging from Art History to Physics 3 material. Not only were team scores kept, but individual scores were tallied throughout as well. Jasinski’s area of expertise came in math (she wants to study Applied Mathematics in college) and art. Other team members were strong in the areas of Science, which made for a very competitive group. “We were strong all year,” Jasinski said. “We had a really powerful team. We all work so well together.” Of course, making the sixmember All-Brevard Team was quite an honor. “That was really exciting because I think that’s a little more big of a deal because (after) districts, you really don’t go anywhere after that,” she said. “There’s no state team competition. “But the Team Brevard thing is a huge deal. We get to go to Disney (in April) for four days and compete against the whole state.” VV

From N.Y. to New Orleans … Viera band student is on a roll BY CARL KOTALA

It’s the marching band lover’s perfect trifecta. In November, Viera High senior Jacob Groppel took part in the 90th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, playing his trumpet as he marched the 2.5-mile route through the heart of New York City. This month, Groppel will join his Viera High bandmates in New Orleans, where they will perform in the Superdome during halftime of the Sugar Bowl game between Auburn and Oklahomaon Jan. 2. Two weeks later, it’s off to Tampa where Groppel will represent Viera High as a member of the All-State Jazz Band. “It’s been a good year,” Viera’s drum major and band captain said. The opportunity to play with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band came after Groppel and his mother watched the 2015 parade and she suggested he audition for the 2016 event. He sent in a video of himself playing and was one of 30 trumpet players given the chance to take

part. The band played the Justin Timberlake song, “Can’t Stop the Feeling” as it marched through the crowded streets of New York, slowing down only at the end as it prepared for its big moment — a spot on national television. “It’s on YouTube,” Groppel said. “Some of my friends took a picture of the TV and they circled who they thought was me.” The week-long stay in New York also afforded Groppel and his family a chance to check out some of the country’s most famous attractions — the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. He is the first Viera band member to play in the Thanksgiving Day parade. “We’re super proud of him,” Viera Band Director Nick Eggen said. “He’s the first to seek out this opportunity and take advantage of it. I suspect there will be some others who follow in his footsteps now that they’ve seen him do it.” And now, it’s off to The Big Easy. “It’s going to be fun,”

Groppel said. “We’re going to be on a bus all night (on Dec. 30) and arrive in New Orleans in the morning. From that point forward, we’re going to be constantly moving — sightseeing and rehearsing.” The Viera Band will take part in a parade through the streets of New Orleans on Dec. 31, where it will play the Mardis Grasthemed song “Ika, Ika.” The halftime show for the Sugar Bowl is themed “On the Town.” The band will play a medley of the songs “Dancing in the Streets” and “Uptown Funk.” Groppel will be part of 181 Viera students and 35 chaperones taking part in the trip. Students raised money for the event with the generous help of local businesses. On Jan. 13, Groppel will be part of another first for Viera. He’s the first in the school’s 11-year history to be selected to play in the All-State Jazz Band. “He’s definitely one of our shining stars here,” Eggen said. “We’re (going to be) sad to see him go, but we know he’ll go off and do nice things.” VV

VIERA VOICE courtesy of Karen Groppel

Viera High senior Jacob Groppel had the experience of a lifetime when he got to play trumpet at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in November. Groppel and the rest of the Hawks marching band will play during the halftime show at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Jan. 2.

A New Approach to Hip Replacement

Kenneth Sands, MD – First Choice Medical Group

Rediscover the life you had before hip pain If you are considering hip replacement surgery, you may be interested in an innovative technique called the Anterior (or front) Approach. The Anterior Approach for hip replacement surgery may allow you to be up on your feet and back to your active life faster than with traditional hip replacement. Thanks to a small incision made at the front of your hip joint, rather than the typical side or back incision, you may have a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, less postoperative pain, immediate stability of the hip after surgery and a lower risk for dislocation. So you can get back in the game faster. There are potential risks with any surgery and results can vary. Recovery takes time and depends on factors like activity level, weight and age. If you would like to learn more about this innovative technique, contact:

5K prize sponsor pairs teen flight classes with motivational message BY KATIE PARSONS

Wings of Grace Ministries is providing the grand prize — a one-hour helicopter tour — for this year’s Bluewater Foundation Color Me Healthy 5K Run/Walk, see cover story. The event begins with 5K registration at 7 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at Jack Mahon Park on Spyglass Hill Road in Suntree/Viera. Participants can experience piloting an aircraft courtesy of two flight simulators at the event provided by the ministry. Entry to see the exhibits is free and open to the public until 10:30 a.m. Wings of Grace targets troubled teens. Founder Dwight Bell says he has a heart for them because he used to be one. “Looking back, I did a lot of reckless things. I’m just lucky the outcome wasn’t different,” Bell said. He credits learning about Christianity and finding a love for Christ as turning his life around. After many years of success in the real estate industry, Bell decided he wanted to give back some of the business and spiritual wisdom he had gleaned through the years.

“I tried imparting all this wisdom to a group of teens, and after a few minutes, I could just see that they weren’t very interested in what I was saying,” Bell said. So he re-evaluated his approach and decided to try something a little more innovative. The result is Wings of Grace Ministries, a Christcentered flight school for teenagers. It connects local teens with a love for aviation with the ability to learn how to fly aircraft — and even obtain their pilot’s license. The program hosts 25 to 30 teenagers each year, and the classes run parallel with the school year. Along with flying lessons, both on the ground and in the air, Wings of Grace offers motivational VIERA VOICE Photo guidance for teens grounded Wings of Grace Ministries founder Dwight Bell congratulates teen Cameron Morgan recently on his first solo flight. in Christianity. Group needs fill to proceed with construction of no-kill animal sanctuary BY MIKE GAFFEY

Construction on Brevard County’s first no-kill, nocage haven for domestic animals can begin once Friends for Animals Sanctuary has its fill of fill. The nonprofit organization needs about 78,000 cubic feet of fill once land is cleared to proceed with an 11-building facility on 17 acres of land off Parrish Road in Cocoa that will become a refuge for up to 300 dogs, cats, horses, ferrets, birds and other pets rescued from local shelters and awaiting a forever home. “The problem is that it’s very hard to get the fill,” said Katherine Johnson, who founded the sanctuary in 2011. “We need 4,500 truckloads of it and there’s not a whole lot of it around right now. It’s going to cost us probably $10 a truckload, so we’re talking almost $600,000 in just fill.” Johnson said sanctuary

members hope to devise a way to reduce fill costs or the amount of fill needed for the complex, which received county approval in October of permits required for construction to begin. Members also are searching for an available builder, she added. “We’re in a huge building boom, which is very difficult for us,” Johnson said. “Everybody’s busy. Everybody’s stacked up.” Once completed, the sanctuary buildings will house domestic animals in family-group settings appropriate for each species, Johnson said. Ferrets, rabbits and guinea pigs will reside in a structure called The Hangout, while cats will live in the Kitty Cabana or the Feral Forest. Dogs will live in bungalows that allow them to live and play in comfort and safety. Stables and open range will be available for horses, cows, pigs, donkeys,

The campus will also have a veterinary clinic, scouting campgrounds and administrative offices, said Johnson, who expects to have a staff of 10 to 15 full-time employees and another 10 to 15 volunteers. “It’s really going to be an amazing piece of property,” she said. As we get older, we feel the urgency to contribute to make the world a better place. Time is of the essence and we must act, but what can we do? Last time I checked, the world was pretty big and the issues that needed to be addressed were no smaller. That realization can be overwhelming. It may leave us frozen, not knowing where to begin or what to do. But if we look around, close to us, within our world, there is a lot we can do. No action is too little. Everything we do will have an impact on the world and, as Jane Goodall says, “what you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make” every day. We are only able to control our own actions and determine our own behaviors, but we can influence and inspire others to take their own steps to eliminate bad habits or convert them into positive ones. A good example is the annual Recycling Awards created by the League of Women Voters of the Space Coast (lwv-spacecoast.org) for schools from Kindergarten to 12th grade and run in partnership with Brevard Public Schools. Using a tour to the landfill as the trigger to their thinking brain, the award aims to get students to use their sharp observation skills and wear their thinking cap to reflect about what they and their school can do to reduce waste and increase recycling rate in the county. Ambitious, right? Yes! But to change the world one must be

ambitious and also give others the chance to explore ideas, practice problem solving, and push themselves. As the award coordinator, I just wanted to see more schools participating. My hope is that groups come up with ideas for improvement that can be implemented in their school or in our county, but just the fact that we are driving them to think about the issue is already a positive deed. And those deeds may come in different shapes. This past month, I had a special gift exchange with a group of friends. At first we were going to gift each other only consumables (cookies, restaurant gift cards, movie tickets, etc.) but we ended up deciding to create our own gifts from gently-used/ recyclable materials. That was not only great fun for our group, but each group member said that they will be passing the idea on so others can do the same. That’s a little step, but a little step in the right direction. There are so many issues that need attention and need help in getting addressed, but I believe that if we change one thing in our own world to make a positive impact, that will change the environment around us and it may catch on with others. From refusing to

One person can only do so much use disposable plastic straws to installing solar panels on our roofs to replacing plants in our yard with Florida natives to investing in an electric car, all actions count and these are some that will generate positive impact and will resonate. Despite what might come in 2017, we should embrace the challenges and seek the opportunity in every difficulty. Bill Gates, for one, at the prospect of changes toward alternative energy investment and addressing climate change, took on the challenge and is starting “a fund to invest in transformative energy research and development to reduce the emissions that cause climate change. […] The fund will consider investing in electricity generation and storage, transportation, agriculture and energy-system efficiency.” (NY Times) So think of the issues that need attention, match them with your passions, and consider what kind of difference you want to make. “Believe you can, and you’re halfway there” — Theodore Roosevelt. Volunteers pack gift boxes for needy kids BY MIKE GAFFEY

About a dozen young volunteers gathered Nov. 19 at the Suntree YMCA at 6300 N. Wickham Road, Suite 114 and packed toys, school supplies and toiletries for needy children into shoeboxsized plastic containers. The 350 containers, as well as shoeboxes donated by Y members and other individuals, family members, groups and churches, will be distributed around the globe as part of Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. Children in more than 130 countries have received more than 113 million gift-filled shoeboxes and containers, thanks to the annual drive. “They go to Africa, Asia, India, South America, a lot of war-torn countries,” Suntree YMCA Operations Director Joe Rowlette said of the gift boxes. “Anywhere in need.” Members of the group God’s SQUAD gave up part of their Saturday to prepare the gift

boxes. Although they are not officially affiliated with St. Mary’s Catholic School or the church, the volunteers are current or former students of the prekindergarten-througheighth-grade school.

“It teaches these kids to give back,” Rowlette said. For more information, call the Suntree YMCA at 321-259-2929 or go to ymcacentralflorida.com/ylocations/suntree/. VV

When northside Suntree residents learned of walking trails being marked south of Wickham Road, they immediately wanted ones in their area to showcase forested, lakefront and neatly manicured vistas in the area. Marvin Thomas wanted better health for his neighbors and for youngsters to put down electronic devices and find themselves in nature. Thus, North Suntree Exercise Trail No. 1 and No. 2 were born. “We're trying to give as many amenities as possible to our residents to show them that there's more here than just having a nice place to live,” Suntree resident and community leader Thomas said. “They are great paths to stroll a baby, ride a bicycle, even drive a golf cart to get fresh air.” Residents can find out more and pick up a free trail map from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Color Me Healthy 5K Run/Walk at Jack Mahon Park, 7550 Spyglass Hill Road in Suntree. Venue sponsor Suntree Master Homeowners Association will have a booth at the tandem information fair that is free and open to the public. Both trails are marked with a painted yellow and

VIERA MEANS BUSINESS NETWORKING GROUP

Local experts guide customers to perfect cruise vacations

VIERA MEANS

BUSINESS

BY MIKE GAFFEY

Booking a dream cruise or vacation just got a lot easier in the Suntree-Viera area. In March, entrepreneurs Anthony Garofalo and Jonathan Gersh opened an Expedia CruiseShip Centers franchise at Pineda Landings shopping center, 6375 N. Wickham Road, Suite 103. And the Canadian-based, fullservice travel agency that specializes in cruises has done well so far, Garofalo said. “We had probably one of the best months we’ve ever had last month,” Garofalo said. “And we’re hoping it keeps going.” The Suntree franchise is one of more than 220 Expedia CruiseShip Centers across North America and the first in Brevard County. Its parent company is Expedia, an American company which owns and operates a group of worldwide online travel brands featuring discount pricing and special offers. Although Garofalo, Gersh and their staff of about 15 vacation consultants can book any type of vacation for customers in person, by phone or online, the franchise focuses mainly on cruises, Garofalo said. Some 70 percent of cruises are booked through travel agencies, and Garofalo said that’s likely because the process can be complex. “People don’t necessarily understand the difference between cruise lines, the difference between the ships in the cruise line,” Garofalo said. “You could be looking at 25 different cabin categories, so that’s why they want to use a travel professional.” Before they launched their Suntree franchise,

Anthony Garofalo and Jonathan Gersh are co-owners of an Expedia CruiseShip Centers franchise in Suntree.

Garofalo and Gersh amassed extensive experience in the hospitality field. Garofalo, a Long Island, N.Y. native who earned a degree in hospitality administration from Boston University, spent years working at hotels and on cruise ships. Gersh, who grew up in Queens, N.Y., spent more than a dozen years in hospitality before accepting Garafalo’s offer to move to Florida and open a franchise. “We always wanted to be in business for ourselves and we both loved cruising,” said Gersh, who earned a hospitality administration degree from the New York Institute of Technology. “All the business ideas he’s pitched me, I’ve always said no. But this is the one that I said yes to.” The pair chose Suntree because Garofalo spent time in the area years ago and because of its proximity to Port Canaveral and ports in

Fort Lauderdale and Miami, he said. “This demographic in Suntree-Viera is the right demographic for travel sales,” he added. The franchise is preparing for its busiest time of the year in January and February as cruise lines roll out their best deals and customers start making plans for summer sailings, Garofalo said. “We have that buying power of the number one brand in travel, but we’re a local business,” Garofalo said. “It’s just Jonathan and Anthony and our consultants, and that’s the great part. That’s our strength. We have the best of both worlds.” Business hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Happy New Year! St. John the Evangelist adds larger sanctuary space

NE

W

LIS

BY KATIE PARSONS

If you’ve driven down Stadium Parkway lately, you may have noticed some changes to one of Viera’s largest parishes. St. John the Evangelist Catholic Community is building a new sanctuary, and most of the steel has already been erected. When completed, the new sanctuary will have a seating capacity of 1,100. In 2007, the church moved from meeting in the nearby Government building to its current Parish Center at 5655 Stadium Parkway. The sanctuary seats 725 but was never intended as the permanent meeting place. “Around the time we wanted to launch our campaign for a new building, the economy was facing financial difficulties,” the Rev. Brad Beaupré said. The fundraising campaign finally kicked off in 2013 and this past June enough was raised to start construction on the new sanctuary. A ground-breaking ceremony took place in June, with holes dug and footings started in September. The new building is located about 40 yards from the current one and is expected to be completed in October. When the sanctuary is moved, the current one will be transitioned into a multi-purpose room used for dinners, parties, special speakers and concerts. Beaupré said that he fully expects the original sanctuary to still see plenty of activity. Up next on expansion plans will be adding more classrooms, and eventually an outdoor pavilion. Right now, there are no plans for adding a school to the church. VV St. John the Evangelist has 2,300 parish members and holds Mass every day of the week. Boy Scouts Troop 224, based at Suntree United Methodist Church, collected thousands of pounds of food Nov. 12 after dropping 2,000 bags Nov. 5 in the area for residents to fill and have ready for pickup the following Saturday. The collection by Boy Scouts troops in the Viera/Suntree area and across Brevard is a mainstay for food pantries across the county through the holidays and into the New Year.

HTEA conducts senior gift drive SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

In partnership with Aging Matters in Brevard, students at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy collected gifts for 104 homebound senior citizens and United States veterans. The gift drive was organized by seventh, eighth

and ninth grade National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) students and all Holy Trinity students were invited to participate. This marks the third year of the partnership between Aging Matters and Holy Trinity’s NJHS, and the fifth year that NJHS has collected gifts for seniors. According to Jeanne

Hakkila-Wills, vice president of mission advancement for Aging Matters in Brevard, “The holidays can be such a lonely time for a senior. The cards that Holy Trinity students and their families included with their gifts were the highlight of many of the seniors’ and veterans’ season. These seniors and

veterans are no longer able to drive. The NJHS students, who are just beginning to drive, are especially appreciative of this loss of

independence.” The gifts were delivered by volunteers from Vets Driving Vets. VV

Insects come in many forms from buggy to beautiful

The Gulf fritillary butterfly is also known as the Passion butterfly.

An insect is a small animal that displays a segmented body (head, thorax and abdomen), three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes, a pair of antennae and usually two pairs of wings (sometimes one pair or none, such as the wingless silverfish). The protective exoskeleton molts until final growth; breathing occurs through the sides. Did you know? Not all insects are bugs, but all bugs are insects. The ratio of insects to humans is estimated at 200 million to one. Let us meet a few insects. The common fruit fly is studied in genetics. Bee venom treats rheumatism. The assassin bug feeds on caterpillars and is used for biological control (insects eating pest insects), eliminating pesticides. Insects are involved in robotic research for planet exploration since they can maneuver capably on rough ground with six legs. The silkworm is actually a moth caterpillar (larva). It encloses itself in a protective cocoon constructed from nearly a mile of a continuous strand of silk. Then it pupates and becomes a moth. Unfortunately, harvesters boil the cocoon inhabitant before maturity to retrieve silk. This process is deplored by many. The cockroach (related to the termite) has higher radiation resistance than a human. Hardy, it can survive temporarily on glue from a postage stamp. Russian scientists sent a cockroach into space — the first terrestrial animal to give birth there. Obviously, this insect is appreciated more in space than in the kitchen. Termites devastate more homes than fires, floods, and tornadoes. Some devour cellulose in wood and even consume drywall and plastic — moreover, they never sleep. The enormous queen’s mission is to lay millions of eggs in a possible lifetime of 50 years. Termite nests are huge with built-in “air conditioning” — outstanding research models for cooling

buildings. The locust, usually solitary, is the swarming phase of certain species of grasshoppers. It can eat its own weight in a day. In 1875, a colossal swarm of the now-extinct Rocky Mountain species covered 198,000 square miles in midwestern states. The female mosquito (a fly) bites to obtain nutrients from blood to produce eggs. One in 1,000 females carries a disease fatal to humans, causing millions of deaths yearly. Except for being a meal for other creatures, the mosquito is worthless. Other insects are harmful — stinging wasps, bees and ants. In addition, some insects are annoying, especially when they confuse the porch light for moonlight needed to navigate. However, insects benefit humans, animals and the planet. These creatures contain vitamins, minerals and high protein. In developing countries, eating insects (entomophagy) is practiced. In addition, insects provide animal feed. Farming insects supposedly emit 10 times less greenhouse gas than farming livestock. Most essential are bees and other insects for plant pollination. Furthermore, insects recycle dead plants and animals; therefore, their droppings maintain topsoil, enabling plants to grow. And some are culinary delights, like the fried grasshopper (chapulin) in Mexico. Others give us joy as decorated live insect jewelry, such as the Mexican Maquech beetle, a Mayan tradition. Yet, the live “roach brooch” promoted ethical debate in this country. Indeed, a harmless pleasure prevails: behold the breathtaking butterfly! VV
